Two problems related to automatic transmission column shift have been reported for the 2002 Saturn SL1. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Gear shift started smoking then caught on fire. There was a recall for 2000-2003 Saturns of the same model. The dealer stated they weren't responsible for the fire and wasn't going to pay for the damages.
Transmission pawl will not disengage if vehicle is parked on slightest incline even with emergency brake. This problem is becoming repetitious more frequently. Vehicle must be left in neutral with hand brake engaged. Please describe details.
