Gear shift started smoking then caught on fire. There was a recall for 2000-2003 Saturns of the same model. The dealer stated they weren't responsible for the fire and wasn't going to pay for the damages.

2 Automatic Transmission Column Shift problem of the 1998 Saturn SL1

Failure Date: 08/24/2003

Consumer noticed upon starting vehicle park paw would not shift out of park. Dealer has been contacted. This happened on four different occasions. Consumer had to rock the vehicle, restart, pump the brakes and giggle the lever before it would release. When changing gear a scrapping sound was heard and Saturn stated it would get worse. After four times, consumer had it replaced at a cost of $#144. 09. Consumer noted Saturn would not work on his vehicle maybe because he filled a complaint for shabby work.

3 Automatic Transmission Column Shift problem of the 2002 Saturn SL1

Transmission pawl will not disengage if vehicle is parked on slightest incline even with emergency brake. This problem is becoming repetitious more frequently. Vehicle must be left in neutral with hand brake engaged. Please describe details.
