Saturn SL2 owners have reported 13 problems related to engine exhaust system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Excessive oil consumption - epa problem
at 75,000 miles our 2001 Sl2 began to consume oil at an alarming rate. 1 qt in less than 150 miles. This is less that one quart per fuel stop. No oil is dripping and the engine is dry of oil. There are thousands of such cases posted on numerous web sites. All with the same symptoms starting at between 60,000 and 80,000 miles. It seems that gm used low tension oil rings and they stick easily allowing the oil to burn in the cylinder. A temporary fix can be obtained by removing the spark plugs and filling each cylinder with car cleaner. A soaking of several hours will stop the oil usage for about 3000 miles then it will start again. This is also an epa problem as the oil is going out the exhaust. The response from Saturn is this falls in the realm of normal oil usage.

Vehicle was taken to the dealer for a routine inspection, and mechanic determined that the resonator cracked, and needed to be replaced. This was the second time the resonator cracked. The consumer wanted the resonator welded but the dealer suggested a new resonator because they were redesigned and completely different from the old ones. The consumer believes that if the manufacturer realized there was a flaw with the resonators that they should have been recalled.

I replaced my brakes and rotors today. The mechanic wanted to show me the mess that they were. I looked at them and he pointed out how unusually destroyed the inside pads are. He said he rarely sees anything that bad. The horn works when it wants to. The key gets stuck in the ignition and some days I really have to work hard to get it out or get the steering wheel to release so I can turn the key. Also the exhaust system is just hanging on before the rust overruns it.

After a long distance drive and stopping at local store for a moment vehicle would hesitate while consumer was traveling at about 45mph. Then, when pulling into a parking lot vehicle started smoking, releasing very thick vapor. Also, smoke was coming from exhaust, and vapors was from inside of vehicle. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.

After both my children at different times told me that I had an exhaust leak because I am experiencing incresased exhaust noise (I had it checked), I ran across an article in "highways" magazine (good sam club) that stated there was a recall for the 2000-2003 Saturn l-series. I own a 1999 Saturn l-series and it is showing all the signs of the same problem described in the recall NHTSA campaign id number 03v231000. The car has been sluggish and very hard to start along with the increased exhaust noise. This model/year Saturn should be included in the recall. . . There is a problem with it also! when I took the car to the service dealer in March, 2001, they said it was the battery and they installed a new one but it did not improve the performance of the car. It continues to be a problem and it is getting worse.
