Saturn SL2 owners have reported 11 problems related to front seat belt retractor (under the seat belt category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The front side passenger seat/shoulder belt system would not retract or release on my 1997 Saturn 4-door sedan. I was told by the dealer that the retractor had "frozen" & I needed a whole new seat belt replacement. Although there has been a recall of the '97 Saturn seat belts for retractor doing the same thing in the 2 dr coupe model; I was told my model was not covered in the recall. The car has never been in a major accident and rarely does the passenger front seat have an occupant. The seat belt will be replaced as we need it to ensure safety of passengers as well as comply with the IL state law.

Driver's side seat belt retractor failed.
I purchased a 1998 Saturn Sl2 in April of 2002 and discovered after purchase that it had a defective seat belt retractor. When the vehicle was taken to a local Saturn dealership I was told that even though this is a very common problem on this model I would be charged for the repair. The dealership was also unable to find the exact part number and wanted to make the repair from a similar but not identical 1996 model. The dealership told me that Saturn does not take responsibility for defective safety items such as the retractor because so many of their vehicles have this problem and it has not been officially recalled.

Driver's seat belt lower retractor froze w/ seat belt in retracted position, rendering seat belt inoperable. Retractor is not in a location servicable by the owner, and is currently stuck fast for no apparant reason. Cost of repair not yet known. Car is a very low milage vehicle, formerly owned by an elderly man. Car had 10,200 miles on it in sept. 2000 when purchased directly from estate. Problem first appeared on 3/9/01 after I've driven the car about 9000 miles.
Vehicle rear ended while at a complete stop. Drivers' side seat back let go, and seat belt released, causing driver to be thrown forward and backwards. This was a low impact collision, and no injury would have occurred if seat and belt had held up during collision.

Cosco model 02-452 wal, manufacturing date unknown. When the booster seat was installed using the vehicle seat belts, the seat belt did not retract. The belt was stuck. The cause was unknown. The shoulder belt would go into the belt positioner to buckle the child tight, but if the child moved, the seat belt shoulder moved and remained loose, which caused the shoulder belt to not retract.
Front passenger's seat belt will not retract. Dealer has been notified.
