Service Brakes Problems of Smart Fortwo

The contact owns a 2009 Smart Fortwo. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly lost motive power. The vehicle was turned off, the contact waited, and then restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle operated as needed. The failure had occurred several times while driving. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to brake immediately and drifted to the left. The brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard for the vehicle to come to a stop. The abs warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the abs was faulty and retrieved diagnostic trouble codes: 1314 and c1443. The contact stated that the front brake pads were replaced by the dealer, and the rear brake pads were replaced by a certified mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired for the failure to accelerate, and the failure persisted. The vehicle was purchased on July 17, 2025, and the seller kept the repair issues with the vehicle from the contact and failed to provide information on the previous repairs. The contact stated that the failure recurred after retrieving the vehicle. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 74,254.

We were driving in greensboro nc this afternoon on the way to my husbands birthday dinner when off of bridford? parkway our 2008 Smart car passion for two started malfunctioning all lights flashing on instrument panel & brakes quit & another motorist drove up beside us with window down screaming get out your car is on fire!!! we managed to stop on side of road at woods & jumped out car was on fire looked like under back tires and engine in back! we grabbed what we could save & ran. 911 was called & fire and police came. 2 witnesses also to event we have photos & videos. Our car burned all the way down to frame! total loss! we could have died because we couldnt see the fire behind us under car & if not for the man we may have blown up!!.

Three weeks after got the car from carmax check engine light went on and the after a smell of burning oil every time after driving somewhere. Cruise control failure about a month and half after getting the car, spring shocks in bad condition. Front windshield replaced looks like by the writing on the upper corner driver side (pieces of glass found on the car). Cargo cover missing and no mats.

Tl- the contact owned a 2016 Mercedes Benz Smart Fortwo. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph and uncertain if whether he depressed the gas or the brake pedal; the vehicle accelerated off the road and hit a tree. The airbags deployed upon impact. The contact sustained minor bruising at a result of the accident but did not seek medical treatment. A police report was not filed. The vehicle and was totaled and remained at the scene of accident. The dealer nor the manufacturer nor the dealer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be towed from the scene of the accident. The possible failure mileage was 50,000. Jo.

The brakes are slipping bad. They have been slipping since I bought the vehicle in 2016. The gas tank is leaking and has leaked into the cab of the car. The gas tank has been replaced 3 times.

On steep uphills and when you have come to a stop because of a red light or a stop sign, the engine seems to be too weak to push the transmission forward and actually the car my roll back and brakes go in a lock mode which creates a big safety issue.

The "brake malf" light went on as I was driving down hill, coming home from work. I pulled to a side street. The break would work if you pressed really hard. I had the car towed to the Smart dealership. The dealership informed me that water leaked from underneath the passenger seat and corroded the fuse box connected to the breaks. I asked how water could get there he said from a spill. I informed him that nothing has spilled on that side and asked if it could be from the rain or leaking windshield wiper fluid. He said the rain can't get in unless the car window or door is open and that the windshield wiper fluid is somewhere else. There was no spill on the passenger side so I am not sure how the fuse box got corroded. Even if there was a spill, how can a spill inside your own car cause the breaks to malfunction!?? they need to fix this design flaw!!!! having your brakes not work is a deadly situation for any driver to be in.

The car just shuts off at anytime whiledriving in d your just a sitting duck cant use gear to unlock trammission so it could be moved out of way of on comming traffic, theres no warning the cars is in the shop now, this has happen to other Smart Fortwo owners, its a death trap wating to happen needs to be fixed before more people lose there life, look at gm . 54cent could have saved many lose lives. Please help the public,,.

Stopped at a red light behind other car. Vehicle rolled forward while foot was on brake into other stopped vehicle.

I was leaving for work in my Smart Fortwo 451 on a snowy morning. My driveway is rather steep, and while slowly going down the hill the car began to slide. I applied the brakes and began slowing to a stop but was still sliding. I pumped the brake pedal and was still in control of the car when my foot slipped off the brake pedal and became wedged between it and the accelerator. I tried frantically to pull it out but it was stuck fast, and the car was accelerating (due to gravity) down the driveway. I finally was able to pull my foot out of my shoe and depress the brake, but by then I was already off the driveway and headed down the side of the hill. Luckily, I was able to stop before any damage was done, but this could have been a very serious problem had it occurred in traffic. After stopping I still had some difficulty removing my shoe from between the gas and brake pedals. I am a male with size 12 shoes.

I have a 2009 Smart for two passion model on 7/21 I went to go into a parking place at a small shopping area and the brakes slowed me down but would not allow me to come to a complete stop. I was going very slow but could not stop thus I hit the window of a furniture store. It broke the window and the only damage to my car wee cuts in the plastic from the falling glass as it took them 2 hours to pick it up. The police filed a report, no one was injured, the air bags did not deploy, and I went such a short distance I did not have time to think about putting on the emergency brake. There was no warning that I am aware of. All I remember is pushing the brake pedal all the way to the floor and it would not stop. There are factory floor mats in the car and I have many pictures. It has been at the dealer since the accident and they said they cannot find anything wrong. Smart is suppose to send a representative to see it. I really have little faith in this dealership and you can never reach anyone to talk to all you get are voicemails and no call back. Finally got through on wed 7/28 when they said they found nothing wrong. It is still at Smart of trevose (PA).

On my 2008 Smart car passion at 36,585 miles the clutch plate and actuator became defective after only three months of driving. I repaired this issue and at 81,000 miles the same issue on the same part became defective. I put on high miles do to the nature of my business which is a courier company. I am worried for the safety of my drivers. I have expressed this issue to the Smart dealership as well as the national reps. They have no interest in exploring that this could be a major defect with their car. Brakes are a issue I take very seriously since the amount of driving my employees do. Updated 03/15/10.
