1 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2024 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 11/10/2025

When driving below 5 mph—forward or reverse—with the rear passenger door fully open, the only alert is a small “door ajar” icon on the dash. This icon is the same drawing, whether the door is completely open or semi-latched, so the driver has no way to know the extent of the hazard. Without an additional warning, an fully open door can strike pedestrians, poles, garage, or other vehicles, and any passenger seated beside it is needlessly exposed to injury.

2 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 09/14/2025

When crossing a bridge at 40 mph with wide open lanes and shoulders the vehicle on cruise control suddenly braked aggressively and came to a full stop in the middle of a state highway bridge. Conditions were daylight, headed towards sun, no shadows on bridge. The road surface was smooth asphalt. There were shoulders as wide as the active lanes. There was no warning and very little time for a driver reaction. This type of vehicle behavior will most certainly cause rear end collisions.

4 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 08/13/2024

Transmission failure, chugging while driving on the road then slowed down in middle of the intersection, won’t accelerate which is a unsafe situation. It says “check engine”, “break, “eyesight disabled”, “at oil temp” and “transmission”. The speed was stuck to 20mph and engine eas loud. Smelled like something was burning too.

5 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 08/12/2024

I was driving along with no traffic in front of me and no oncoming traffic when the automatic braking system engaged with no vehicles in front of me, this was at 7:42 am on Monday August 12, 2024. This was not the first time it had done this, but the first time I had the time and no traffic anywhere around to confuse the system. My concern is that if another car was following too closely they would have hit me since there was no reason for the emergency breaking system to engage.

6 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 08/06/2024

The driver was driving into a parking lot preparing to park, when the vehicle accelerated and started going forward at a higher speed. The vehicle struck a parked vehicle, then travelled across the parking lot, over curbs, a grass median, landscaping, and struck a rock building at a high rate of speed, causing a partial collapse of the wall. The vehicle is available for inspection through the insurance company. No analysis of data was done and nothing was inspected. There were no symptoms of the problem beforehand. The vehicle has automatic emergency braking, but it evidently didn't operate. It is unknown if this was caused by driver error in accelerating and never braking.

7 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 02/23/2024

On Friday evening, February 23, 2024 , I pulled onto my driveway and came to a complete stop before driving into the garage . I reached up and hit the garage door remote. When the door began to go up I took my foot off the brake. Instead of creeping up the driveway the car took off like a proverbial "bat out of hell" it was as if I had pushed the accelerator compltely down. To the floor board. The brakes had no effect. I smashed through the garage door,. The car jumped a six inch concrete step up, obliterated the garage cabinets and pushed the contents of the cabinets and garage wall into our family room. The car came to a rest just outside our family room. My son opened the door to the garage and yelled out to me "are you okay" because the engine was still racing he said "get your foot off the accelerator' my reply was I don't have my foot n the accelerator". I then tuned the ignition off and the ordeal was over. . It appears that the engine continued to recieve fuel irregardless of the position of the accelerator. , the automatic braking system failed miserably and the the forward collision warning was malfunctioning. I am waiting for the insurance company to remove the car from the garage and do a structural assessment. . Because there may be serious structual damage I want the insurance company to remove the vehicle less the second floor collapses onto the garage. My son was on the couch just seconds before the wall "exploded". The couch was moved eight feet across the room. If a piece of debris came through the windsield I also might have been injured. The potential for serious injury to others in another set of ircumstances also scares me. The malfunction came without warning. The damages will be in the tens of thousands of dollars. I am blessed that no one was injured or killed.

8 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 06/15/2023

I was driving slowly through a parking lot. I found a spot to park my car and noticed that there was a curb painted bright yellow so I knew I could not pull through. I started to turn into the parking spot with my foot on the brake when all of a sudden my car was speeding towards the curb and a tree. My foot was on the brake but the car did not stop nor did the forward collision feature work and the air bag did not deploy. The accident has been reported to both my insurance and the auto maker. The car will be inspected tomorrow.

10 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 05/02/2023

Subaru eyesight will turn off randomly while driving or while parked (turn the vehicle off, unlock the door, sit for a minute or two and when restarting the vehicle, eyesight indicator is orange - off. Example - getting fuel at a full service gas station. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection. Our safety is put at risk. Once eyesight is off it will not reset/restart, so you are driving without the number one Subaru safety feature. We can reproduce the error. The dealer just looked at the codes and said it was normal operation. We reported the error to Subaru customer care and we have a case number. Subaru customer care is going to contact the dealer. There is a small red "I" indicator light in the dash that will light up after eyesight fails. There are no warnings of the failure. We understand rain, snow and fog will impact eyesight. We had a 2020 Subaru that eyesight only shutdown when expected (heavy rain, snow, fog) and would restart once we were in the clear, but now we are told that sunlight and windshield condensation affects eyesight's functionality. We were also told by customer care that the cameras where changed on the 2023 Ascent model.

13 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 11/29/2020

I was in an accident 11/29 at 9:45pm where I hit a cow. I was driving 55 on a straight highway that I'm very familiar with. The cow was standing in the entire lane of travel and I was able to veer into the other lane slightly and took the impact on the right side where I did not have any passengers. The Subaru was totaled and I'm now having severe whiplash symptoms. I am reporting this as the airbags did not deploy and everyone who has seen the vehicle says they think they should have. Additionally, I do not remember my collision alerts beeping nor the Subaru braking for me which have worked in the past. I only remember hitting the cow and then being completely stopped where we had the impact.

14 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 04/08/2019

I leased a 2019 Subaru Ascent (VIN: [xxx] ), which is equipped with the eyesight driver-assist system. In the spring of 2019, while driving in a parking lot at night with low visibility and snow, the vehicle struck a pole. Despite the imminent collision, the eyesight system failed to engage pre-collision braking or provide any audible/visual warning to alert me of the obstacle. The system did not disengage or indicate it was unavailable due to weather; it simply failed to function, resulting in a collision. Following this incident, I immediately contacted Subaru of America to report the failure. At that time, Subaru representatives denied any defect existed and stated the system was not at fault. I have recently learned that this vehicle is part of the [xxx], et al. V. Subaru of America, inc. Class action 9[xxx]), which addresses defects in the pre-collision braking and lane keep assist systems. Crucially, I was never notified of this class action or the associated defect by Subaru. I received no mail, email, or other communication alerting me to this safety risk or my eligibility for repair/reimbursement. I only discovered this information via a third-party news source after the settlement claim deadline of September 27, 2025, had passed. Upon contacting the settlement administrator and Subaru of America in January 2026, I was told that because the administrative deadline has passed, no remedy is available. Subaru is effectively refusing to address a known safety defect on a confirmed affected VIN solely due to a missed deadline that I was never informed of. I am filing this complaint to document the failure of the eyesight system and Subaru’s failure to properly notify lessees/owners of known safety defects. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
