36 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 08/29/2020

Twice my 2020 Subaru Ascent's battery has been dead. It has been driven every day for at least 20-30 minutes. Nothing was left on, or open. There is obviously an elecrical issue draining the battery.

Battery died after three months. Charged then died completely. Towed to dealer for new battery. Had nothing to do with rail gate.

38 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 07/30/2020

My Ascent has a little over 16,000 miles on it and was purchased Feb. 2019. The battery died just sitting in my driveway after not being driven for 4 days. No lights were left on and tail gate was not open. Had to jump start it and take it to Subaru. Battery was defective. Luckily this happened at home and not 2 days later when I was supposed to be driving to the airport for a flight.

39 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 07/28/2020

I have owned this vehicle since late may 2020, and I have approximately 2,000 miles on the odometer. On 7/25/20, I started the vehicle and there was no sound at all from the audio system - radio, navigation, voice commands, etc. Were all mute. I rebooted the radio by holding down the power button until it restarted, but this did not fix the issue, despite multiple reboots. I continued to drive my vehicle each day on 7/26 and 7/27, and the audio did not come back. On 7/29/20, I planned to call the dealer to report the issue. When I went to start my vehicle, which is kept in my garage, I discovered that the battery was completely dead. As soon as I tried to start the car, the tailgate began beeping, and then the headlamps flickered randomly for approximately one minute. There is no power at all in the vehicle, and I am unable to lock/unlock the car or open the tailgate, even manually. There were no doors left open, no lights left on - the battery simply died.

40 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 07/28/2020

Parked the car. The rear liftgate would not open with fob or from dashboard. Two quick beeps but no movement. We decided to just grab our items from the inside and left. When we returned to the car about an hour later, the car would unlock but the rear liftgate still didn't work. We loaded up the car and started the car but battery was dead. After charging up the battery, all the major safety car features have been disabled and the engine light is on with many other lights showing up. The car is drivable but obviously doesn't feel right or safe. I just called Subaru to make an appointment. I explained the problem. They originally scheduled an appointment for 2 weeks later but I managed to get an appointment for next day. I'm concerned about the safety of the car especially with the number of other owners with electrical problems specifically related to the tailgate.

41 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 07/25/2020

Our car is about a year old and the car battery has now died 3 times. It started when camping when opening and shutting the lift gate for unloading. We don't keep the back end open to prevent chipmunks getting into the car for food, so it was not left open and the lights drained it. We have had to purchase jumper cables and a battery charger so we don't get stranded again in the mountains or our driveway. We took it to the dealership and they said nothing was wrong with the battery and they saw no drain on it. Maybe they will come jump our car when we need it next.

42 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 07/21/2020

The vehicle only had 6,228 miles on the odometer and the battery died. It was purchased in April 2019 and battery died in July 2020.

43 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 07/07/2020

Found my battery dead and my rear trunk door open. I had closed it and parked my car in my garage the evening of the 4th. I went to my garage today and discovered this. This is the second time this has occurred. After searching the web, I know that there is a problem with the electrical system that will cause the battery to go dead if the rear latch doesn't properly latch or the door is left open for a specified amount of time. This is very frustrating. Last time, I had to cancel a dr's appointment when I discovered it. Today, I was just going to my garage for another purpose so didn't need to drive anywhere.

44 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 06/15/2020

As my vehicle was parked on my driveways after maybe a day or two without driving it, my battery was dead. I jumped started it and it worked, but as they went by the battery kept dying. I decided to take it to the dealer. They said my battery tested bad and because the car only has 18k miles, it was still under warranty. Ok, so I went on with my day. A couple of weeks went by and the battery died again. Brand new battery. I took it back to the dealer and they tell me they couldnt do anything about it. To let it die again and tow it back to the dealer. So I did! a week after my brand new battery had tested 'good', it had to be towed back to the dealership. Today they called me stating a cell in the battery tested bad so they are going to replace it. How could that be possible? something is withdrawing charge off the battery and they cant figure it out. They are going to keep the car overnight to see if they notice any discharge from the battery. But com'on. I have gotten my transmission replaced at 5k miles, multiple tires have blown out on the highway, the fuel pump recall a couple of months ago and now this issue. Do not buy a Subaru please!!!!.

45 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 06/12/2020

Premature battery failure. Twice since purchase, the battery has failed to start the car and had to be jump started. Both times the temperatures were moderate and the car had been driven at least 20 miles before being parked.

46 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 06/08/2020

Battery has gone dead twice and had to be jumped.

47 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 06/01/2020

V1. The battery died within 6 months 4 times :first time Aug. 21. 2020 , than Dec. 03. 2021 , Dec 24. 2021 and Jan. 04. 2021 2. The stereo system is not working properly sound cutting off frequently. 3. Break problem. Before 6 months the brakes had to be replaced and are still making grinding unusual noise. Even after multiple dealer service no improvement. Actual break action not consistent and not reliable save. 4. The ac system is not functioning properly - kicks in even when in heating mode. In using the remote start the ac kicks in immediately and changing the settings will not help. 5. The eyesight system is inconsistent with the warning lights coming on when there is no problem? instead of being a safety feature it is a dangerous problem feature. Because it is not reliable makes safe driving very difficult ? and we had considered this system as a plus when deciding on Subaru Ascent. 6. Problems with trunk opening ? sometimes will not work with key or from the inside ? has to be opened manually. 7. Oil level sensor had to be replaced. 8. The VIN number was listed to have a recall ? but when checking it out it showed 0 recalls. We consider this very strange. 9. After each visit to the dealer, we are told that everything is fine ? but one or two days later the same problems show up again. 10. Bluetooth system keeps deleting phones. 11. Rpm gauge not functioning. 12. Mpg indication never changes shows always same value ? even under completely different driving conditions. I am filing this claim for may daughter [xxx] because I bought the car at the time. Also the problems are ongoing since the date listed below information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

48 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 05/11/2020

In Feb my car battery was dead in morning after sitting in garage turned off and no doors or lights on. I had it jumped and took it to the dealer and they tested battery and it was fine. The second time it happened a week later same scenario I took it in and they tested battery and said it was bad battery. So the dealer replaced it and it and it was fine. The third time now today it has happened again except this time my car was beeping at me like if the unlock key fob button had been hit but doing it every few seconds. So I went and found both key fobs and they weren't being depressed so I tried to unlock door myself with key fob and nothing happened and red light on fob blinked every time I touched it but I wouldn't hear anything happening with car so I tried to click tailgate button and nothing happened. So I then went to turn the car on and realized the battery was dead again. So we jumped it and let it run for twenty minutes and dealer wants us to take it back but they are saying they haven't heard if this issue when I search online it seems like this is a known issue.

49 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 05/09/2020

We received our new vehicle on 04/28/2020 - the vehicle sat for several days (5-7) without being used. On 05/09/2020 the battery was dead and the vehicle had to be jumped to start it. Brought the car to the service department, no defects were found in the battery or charging system.

50 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 05/04/2020

The first experienced the issue when the lift gate was left open for a while the battery died before the battery died on the lift gate was left open and we couldn't open the liftgate and the only way to get the lift gate to open was the unhook the battery then after the lift gate was left over with while the battery completely died then from then on the battery continued to not be fully charged when to Subaru they couldn't figure out the issue rep.

51 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 04/20/2020

My car failed to start after it had been sitting in my garage for 3 days. Hooked battery up to a portable jumper which read battery amps at 6. 7. Battery jumped without issue. Took car to dealer who kept the car for 4+days and the dealer could not recreate the problem. Dealer advised me to lock my car doors as that could help turn computers off and not drain battery. Another 2 months went by and my battery needed to be jumped at least 4 more times if it sat and wasn't driven for more then 3 days or if I forgot to lock it. Finally on the morning of 4/20/20 I went out to start the car and the battery was dead yet again. The car had been locked but not driven for 3 days. When hooked up to the portable charger, the amps read 3. 6. The check engine light came on and the eye sight system was turned off per instrument panel. Jumped car and took it to dealership. Dealership kept car for 4+ days and informed me that the battery was replaced as it bad. Current mileage on car is 6633.

52 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 02/03/2020

Battery is dead frequently (1-2 times per week). This occurs after leaving one or more doors open (thus the interior lights are illuminated) for only 5-10 minutes. We are constantly having to jump start the car using a portable lithium ion battery that we purchased because of this issue. This has been occurring for over a year.

53 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 02/02/2020

My 2019 Ascent was parked in garage overnight. Went out to car and found rear tailgate would not open and car would not start. Battery was dead. Jumpstarted car and drove it to the store. When I parked the car it went dead, car would not restart, and would not lock, tailgate would not open. Had to get roadside service to come out and start car. Took car to dealer and they said they could not find anything wrong but did replace the battery. Several weeks later while car was parked and locked in a store parking lot I came out and found the rear tailgate open. No one had pushed the remote to open the tailgate? today I found the car parked in the garage and the tailgate would not open, the car would not start, and the battery was dead again. I could find no reason for the battery to be dead again. The car had been driven normally around town for the last few days. It was parked in the garage. All the doors were shut and no lights had been left on. The car was purchased in June 2019 and has less than 6000 miles on it plus this is a new battery. I am concerned about driving the car and being left on the road by a dead battery or coming out and finding the rear tailgate open in a parking lot.

54 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 01/13/2020

Car was shaking while idling/ shifting hard/ studdering while trying to shift and not shifting while going up an incline. The transmission was damaged from the slack in the cvt belt and now has to be completely replaced. Also the battery died. No doors were left open and no lights were left on. No reason to have a dead battery other than a large parasitic drain while the car is off.

55 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 10/02/2019

Got into the car at home in the garage and the car would not start due to a dead battery. It was fortunate that the battery died at home. This could have been extremely stressful if this had occurred while we were out of town and not close to a Subaru dealer. After Subaru replaced the battery, it died again on April 4, 2020, also at home while the car was in the garage. At that time, the dealer simply recharged the battery and performed deep diagnostics which did not indicate any systemic electrical issue. I have attached a log of issues which point to other electrical system issues that Subaru has acknowledged are known issues but Subaru has not or will not fix the root electrical causes of these issues via a recall. This battery issue has been documented on other Subaru models in prior years. Please be aware that the file I have attached is a log of all problems I have had with the car since purchasing it. Most of them are related to the electrical system (of which the battery is part of) so focus on those too if appropriate.

56 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 08/15/2019

Battery dead 7 times (beginning fall of 2020) or drained too low to properly use vehicle causing all doors to lock (issue when stranded in non-populated area with child in car) or hatch unable to close. All items in vehicle are off. Appears to be electrical in nature and possibly related to in going Subaru power-gate hatch issues. Have also had hatch open on own stationary & low speed. Often left stranded. Hard pulsating and grind on brakes at low to moderate speed causing car to pull and feel like not going to stop in motion on curved road, highway, city street. Started within year (Aug 2020) of owning after 1st service at dealer for routine oil change. Dealer says nothing wrong at all. Subaru refuses to acknowledge issues even though other owners are experiencing same. Told by Subaru lame excuses like not driving enough, shut everything off, do not use electronics so much, etc. Car jumped 7 times so far. Took to dealer 3 times (9/29 brakes, 12/9/20 & 1/2/21 for battery and brakes) so far and dealer even had to charge battery (1/21)! unknown drain from somewhere. Every time happens have to have tail gate reprogrammed or not able to open.

57 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 08/11/2019

My battery has died on multiple occasions due to a large continuous indefinite power draw when the rear lift gate is open. The battery will die with just an hour or two of the liftgate being open. This has happened while packing the car and while camping. I bought this car because it, and Subaru in general, are advertised as good for outdoor activity. Couldn't have been more wrong. It's a serious safety concern. This could leave a family stranded in the wilderness. I've been lucky to be with people that had more reliable outdoor vehicles to provide a jump. And now I know I can't trust my car to start so I won't be using it for extended outdoor trips.

58 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 04/13/2019

After 4 months of ownership, in April 19 the battery died while at a camping trip. Fellow campers tried to boost the battery to no avail. I had limited cell support. Road side assistance came and towed the Ascent to the dealership. They found high current drawn from the awd system but said that beside a completely dead battery everything was normal. They provide the same battery type. In March 2020 the car wouldn't start. Contacted Subaru roadside assistance, jumped the car. In June 2020 white getting ready for a camping trip, after packing the car, which involve leaving the rear hatch open and door constantly opens and closed the car wouldn't start. Using a portable backup battery I was able to jump the car and go on my trip. While camping I kept the engine running while I was unloading the car. Did he same when I loaded the car back.

59 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

I attempted to start my Subaru Ascent and it would not start. I contacted Subaru's towing and they came and jumpstarted the car. The towing company informed me that Subaru's Ascent batteries are defective and that they have been forced to jump a number of them. I drove to work. The next morning, I woke to the same problem. I called Subaru's towing service, and they came out again. I took the car to the dealership and they tested the battery, but the battery did not exhibit fail codes. Subaru would not replace the battery, despite the two failures. Since this time, I've had multiple battery failures and Subaru continues to deny my request for replacement.

60 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 03/18/2019

Let the tailgate open for 4 hours and the battery died. Use the car to travel with dogs. Purpose of the car is to travel with dogs for field work. Cannot have it die or my dogs die without proper ventilation.

61 Battery Dead problem of the 2019 Subaru Ascent

Failure Date: 02/07/2019

The battery keeps dying when I have the tailgate (tg) opened for extended periods of time such as when dog training. The first time my battery died, I was the last person on the training grounds. I closed the tg and lights were flashing and beeping for a few minutes. The battery died and the tg was shut and wouldn't open. I panicked b/c I could not get my dogs out and I was alone in a vast wooded area. This is a terrible safety issue b/c if I did not have cell phone coverage that day, my dogs would've been trapped in the car without water and I would have had to walk a very long way to get help since the Subaru roadside assistance will not work without cell coverage. In Feb. , I was dog training in areas of georgia where there is no cell phone coverage. Three days in a row, my battery died. Fortunately, another member of our group jump started the car. The local dealer in tallahassee was shocked to hear that leaving the tailgate open would drain the battery. Subaru says this is how the car was designed. In addition to installing a new battery, they installed a battery disconnect switch, which I purchased to prevent my battery from dying. Every time you flip the switch to cut the battery off, all the presets go back to default and have to be reset. And now randomly all the warning lights now come on and the eyesight system fails b/c supposedly the system is sensing a drop in voltage when the battery disconnect switch is being used. It seems to me that Subaru didn't think this through given that they market to the outdoorsy type of person, dog owners and campers. They need some sort of fix to correct this safety issue to allow owners to turn off the power to the tg when needed so they are not left stranded when they are 'off the grid' as their commercials tout. .
