I was driving north on highland avenue, just after 7 am, Thursday, July 11, when suddenly the vehicle lost acceleration, the rpms went low, and the vehicle died. No warning lights or indications of a problem before the event. This left me stranded between 35th and 31st street during the busy rush hour period. Unable to restart. Tow into the dealer. Fuel pump failure was determined to be the cause. This was alarming from a safety standpoint because without warning the vehicle stopped operating, leaving me stuck in rush hour traffic having to signal approaching drivers to avoid my stalled car. It would have been worse if the event happened in the middle of a busy intersection. What's more, with a little over 63000 miles on the vehicle, the pump failure occurred long before the vehicles expected operational life. I view this pump failure incident as a serious Subaru product manufacturing defect capable of endangering the lives of drivers, passengers and fellow travelers on our streets and highways.
I was driving on the interstate going 75 mph, passing another vehicle, when the car rapidly lost speed and revved to 5500 rpm. The vehicle continued to lose speed and would not respond when I pressed down on the accelerator. I had to quickly pull to the left shoulder. Luckily, the car behind me was paying attention and was able to slow down and not hit us. I turned the car off and luckily the vehicle did restart. My fuel light had just turned on minutes before this but I still had 60 miles to go before empty. I was planning on exiting to refuel before this happened. I still do not know what caused this to occur. I left a message with the dealership and I am awaiting a return phone call to have the vehicle assessed.
