Sunroof exploded for no reason comments:?my son was driving on freeway in durham north carolina last night, our 2015 Subaru Crosstrek xv touring’s sunroof just exploded for no reason at 7pm in 8/7/2025.
Pressing the horn button on the steering wheel does not sound the horn. However, pushing the “lock” or “panic” button on the key fob still makes the horn beep. So the horn itself works, but pressing on the steering wheel does absolutely nothing. Other buttons on the steering column still work (cruise control, radio controls, etc). Only pressing the horn button doesn’t work thus making me unable to alert other drivers of my presence if they are drifting toward me. This has not been evaluated by a mechanic or dealer yet as I do not have the money to do so. However, a simple search on reddit will show you that many others are experiencing this with their Subaru Crosstreks. There were no symptoms or issues that led to this. It simply stopped working one day. And I am not someone who hits their horn very often so this is not an overuse issue. Once the horn button stopped working on the steering wheel, it has not worked since. I have not had the ability to alert drivers with my horn for over a month.
Intermittently, when I go to shut off the engine, I can not remove my key from the ignition. If I put the car back into park a few times, it seems to release the key. This does not happen often, but it has occurred a few times in the past few months.
While in motion at approximately 65mph on the highway hood latch failed and hood flew up and smashed into windshield, shattering glass all over and pushing windshield in towards driver. Front windshield view was completely obstructed and driver was unable to safely pull to shoulder. Vehicle sustained significant damage to hood, hood hinges, windshield and fenders. Subaru has history of lawsuits and recalls regarding failed hood latch. Police report is available.
I am having issues with trying to remove key from ignition. It won't let me turn all the way from acc to remove the key. I've tried turning the steering wheel, restart ignition and try turning all the way off again and still stuck. I had to start and put car in reverse, then pull foward and was able to turn key completely to the off position and was able to remove key. It seems to be getting worse. I have contacted Subaru of America and reported the problem to them as well.
Car involved in accident 10/2020( remember this was during the covid “shut down”) was rear ended … tried to get car fixed. Insurance only wanted to do “cosmetics” nothing underlying ( mechanical… the car started to show signs of the damage …running lights stopped working on rear end only. Breaks started to cease up…. I was afraid to drive this way… the “eyesight” prevented my vehicle from hitting truck in front of me ( during the accident on 10/2020). I have since had breaks worked on, I have replace light bulbs, I have had turn signal arm replaced, according to Subaru can will not start now. They keep coming up with more for me to pay for and my vehicle is still not running?!? it had always started before going into the shop (even after sitting in a personal garage for over a year) accident deemed american family insurance insured fault. I have been charged with “at fault”. I was not at fault and have proof from am fam insurance indicating they accept 100percent fault. Car currently at ramsey Subaru. According to them will not start.
Driving on the freeway for 1. 5 hrs when car just went limp. Accelerator wouldn't work, started to pull over, car came to stop and it was dead, except for electrical. Tried to restart for over an hour and although it cranked, it would not turn over. Again all electrical was fully functional. After having it towed, the next day it started right up and no warning lights are on on the dash at all. Vehicle is serviced as scheduled, and only has 47,000. After researching forum I have found it is somewhat a popular thing but dealeerships cannot replicate the problem, yet in keeps recurring to owners. Seems to be a factory issue or some sort of faulty part that is cutting the fuel process. When you are stuck on the side of the freeway in the dark, it is extremely dangerous and just hope no other car happens to swerve and hit you. This is a safety issue that should be investigated because it sounds like a popular occurrence with the vehicle.
At times we are not able to remove the key from the ignition switch when the vehicle is in park. We looked around the internet and found that Subaru had released a service bulletin regarding this. Bulletin number 16-112-18r addresses the issue that we are having with our Crosstrek. People are saying online that they are spending $400+ to get this problem fixed. Why isn't Subaru doing a recall on this if lot of cars are having this issue? the price to get this fixed is a lot considering the car is not that old and this is not a wear and tear issue. It is a design flaw and the manufacturer should be addressing it.
Transmission will not engage when car is in park. Unable to completely turn off vehicle or remove key from ignition.
After putting my car in park, my key will not come out of the ignition. I have to reverse and drive up again and then park again, in order for my key to then finally come out. I'm nervous that won't work for long. I've seen many complaints about this exact same issue and yet Subaru hasn't issued a recall. Hoping we won't be responsible for the cost to repair what is obviously a manufacturer issue! Subaru please investigate!!.
In July, this year (2019), the key began sticking in the ignition switch. Gradually worsened over a period of 2 week to the point that it could not be removed from the ignition switch at all. Bob moore dealership fixed the issue costing me over $500. 00. During the past week the same ignition switch problem has began to occur again.
The key gets stuck in the ignition and the power stays on. I was told to move the steering wheel slightly and try again, this does nothing, the car is completely locked up. Turning off and re-starting does not work. This happened only a few times last month, now its almost everyday.
2015 Subaru xv Crosstrek limited with auto climate controls after sitting for 3 days I started vehicle and had no hvac control, vehicles has 80,000 miles. I disconnected the battery after driving 80 miles hoping the computer glitched and would reset the controls, still no control of hvac system.
Experiencing trouble removing ignition key, and getting worse over time. I must start the vehicle a few times, place it in reverse then return to park. Then I am able to remove the ignition key. The vehicle only has 66000 miles. This is certainly not normal wear and tear.
When starting the vehicle, the abs, hill assist, and vehicle dynamics control lights all light up and lock down the car. Will continue to drive but the next time the car is started, it may not back up or go in drive again.
Car stalled and died while driving on freeway traveling 75mph. Felt like the transmission shifted into a low gear and the rpm's revved. Car immediately lost power and fortunately I was able to safely move to freeway shoulder. Car would not start and had to be towed but all electrical still functioned. I was low on gas but not out. I was on freeway at 11:30pm just outside detroit when this occurred. Ridiculously unsafe. Vehicle is currently at dealer and will be looked at 8/14/2018. Incident 8/9/2018. Exact same symptoms happened to the same vehicle 6 months ago. Car died on freeway traveling 75mph, rpm's revved, got safely to shoulder. Vehicle towed. Car started next morning and no error codes found. Even more compelling, the engine died 3 other times while driving at least 45mph, same sensation of engine going into lower gear, rpm's increased to 5000+, car dies, electrical works. Car was able to restart after 10-15 minutes of rest. These 3 incidents are not documented because I was not towed and did not take the vehicle in for service. I wish I had. I am reporting for the most recent incident of 8/9/2018. (I feel like I'm shouting with all caps. I am shouting because this needs to be fixed!).
Rear view mirror fell off the windshield in 2018 leaving a large area of broken glass I made contact with the dealership and was advised that I would have to contact my insurance company. I had the windshield replaced. It fell off as I was driving and was adjusting the mirror.
I was pulling into a parking space and the car took off like a rocket!. I heard the engine roaring it jumped the curb, sped about 15 feet through the grass, I slammed on the brakes, just missed a tree, and the car stopped.
Since I bought this 2015 Crosstrek in 2015 there have been multiple times where I have pulled out and the vehicle pauses. Like there is no power or it is taking a breath. No matter the pressure on the accelerator it does not go. Then like a gasp it starts to pick up speed. Does not shut off but zero power. It happens regardless the weather, length of time car has been running. It has caused me a narrow miss before because I could not get into my lane. I was pulling into traffic from a slow speed most times. Once it happened while in traffic driving.
