36 Power Train problem of the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 12/26/2022

My car has stopped working while driving 70 mph on the interstate in so separate occasions. Both times it has been driving fine, with fuel in the tank, and all of the sudden it shuts off and completely loses power. All of the warning lights on the dash light up and the only thing to do is to coast to the shoulder of the highway. Couldn’t start the car back up (cranked, no start). Battery is fine. Fuel level is fine. First time it happened it had to be towed. Towed to mechanic who ran diagnostics on it the next day but nothing threw a code. It started fine the next day. I’ve had certified Subaru mechanics tear this thing apart trying to figure out what causes the issue but they can’t find anything wrong. I’m scared this is going to happen again and will put me in a dangerous situation in the middle of a highway or on the side of the road. This is definitely an issue putting myself and others at risk. It seems similar to other issues Subaru Crosstreks have had in close model years to mine (20 where recalls have been issued for fuel pump malfunctions etc. Please look into this, this could cause a terrible wreck and needs to be resolved ASAP.

37 Power Train problem of the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 12/04/2022

12042022 - not sure of cause, could be multiple as all systems just shut down for seconds, the car goes dead while driving down i235 at 70mph, first the radio turns off, then the car seemed to go to lower gear rpm to zero and just shut off at a high speed, no power on anything, then about 2. 5 seconds later it restated and continued, sputtered off again then powered back off and on again as I got off the highway, many warning lights came on including the lane warning, brake light, it was very scary at such a high speed. This car now seems to have little continued incidents of the same behavior for what has seemed to be spuratic but regular fits now and I have to have dependable transportation. Very easily could have caused an accident if the traffic was heavier when the incident occured.

38 Power Train problem of the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 11/02/2022

While I was doing parallel parking, the car on its own went into involuntary, sudden, uncontrolled acceleration & hit a tree & bushes resulting into considerable body damage. Then I called Subaru national customer relations representative & I was told to go to the local Subaru dealer where I had purchased the car about four and a half years ago. The mechanic there told me that he had never heard such incident & he said that since there is no engine light on, there is nothing to scan. And he thought the car was okay. So, I am driving it very cautiously. But, I am concerned. We thought the newer such cars are safer with the high-tech computers on board but I countered this safety problem that I had never come across before.

39 Power Train problem of the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 08/30/2022

Several components' issues and scheduled to take back to Subaru dealer on 12/16/2022. Several times after parking car and getting back in, when shifting to 1st gear to take off, the car goes in reverse instead of forward. Rear backup camera sporadically works. Tire pressure light came on and won't turn off. Front end shakes when braking dealer said it was new brakes, but still happening. Front passenger seat belt locked and will not release, no one can sit in front seat. After purchasing the car, and having so many issues, checked the fluid and there was not a drop of oil on the dipstick. Nothing but problems with car from the date of purchase.

40 Power Train problem of the 2013 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 05/15/2022

Transmission failure while driving on highway caused it to suddenly stalled. On restarting engine, car kept jerking and stopping, became undrivable. Only 46,700 miles on the clock. No warning lights, no warning of any kind. Subaru issued 10 year extended warranty covering transmission on this car but should have recalled and replaced since failure is catastrophic and dangerous. I took my car to Subaru dealer and they found low transmission fluid. Instead of inspecting the seals, they blamed the problem on oil change by an independent garage, accusing them of erroneously drained out transmission fluid before the car broke down.

41 Power Train problem of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 04/14/2022

Drive train, transmission issue. Car was running, in park. I got out to pick up a flyer from yard. Car accelerated and drove through garage door, and crashed into the back wall of garage. No one has inspected the car, as it happened late yesterday. Will contact dealership today. No symptoms prior.

42 Power Train problem of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 03/14/2022

Transmission was about to fail. Car started making noise at low speeds in drive and reverse about 2-3 weeks ago, so I brought it in and mentioned the noise to the service advisor. There were no warning lights, messages on the dash indicating a problem. Confirmed by a Subaru dealer as needing to be fully replaced.

43 Power Train problem of the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 03/11/2022

This 2019 Crosstrek dangerously malfunctioned. When driving at 75 mph on the highway it went into in neutral, then it would not go in reverse, and in park it revved to 75 mph, ultimately it would not start. Based on many codes the car was indicating, the Subaru mechanic tried to replace a cable that communicates the computer to the transmission (turbine?), it did not solve the problem. It has been waiting on a new transmission for four weeks with no eta. Subaru dealer indicates the new transmission will have a 100,000-mile warranty. It appears that rather than fix this known dangerous defective transmission issue for good, there are many reports when you research online, they simply up the warranty. Someone is going to get hurt if they haven't already. Thank you for your time.

44 Power Train problem of the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 12/21/2021

Driving at night on interstate approximately 70 mph using adaptive cruise control. Suddenly engine revs higher and car slows down. Cruise control deactivates. Applying gas cause the engine to rev but car continues to slows down. Pulled to side of interstate. Infotainment system screen flashes to black then back on. Turned car off and back on again and behaved normally. Was able to continue driving with no issues. This same sequence of events also happened approximately one year ago. So this is the second occurrence. The first time I knew I had a bad O2 sensor so thought it may be related to that but the sensor has now been replaced and the same issue has reoccurred.

45 Power Train problem of the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 12/07/2021

Under light throttle, car jerks at approximately 25 mph.

46 Power Train problem of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 11/29/2021

Problem 1)had my '21 sport for 7 days. Started stalling few times when shifting from p to r while on a slight incline (dash lights up like in acc mode) after driving it for about 30 min before and then turning it off to go inside of the store, etc. After about 2-5 minutes of idling, the car engine stopped like I was in auto stop, but didn’t kick back on when I shift gears to reverse or when I applied gas. But then I hit the on/off button and engine turns over just fine. Problem 2) but today it started making a whirring sound with difficulty accelerating & quick decelerating/speed drop off upon release of gas, even when going down a big hill. It felt like resistance and pulling feeling almost? like how a car feels when it doesn’t want to shift. Also felt a little jittery the longer I drove & loud clunk shifting gears. Got louder when I would press on the gas more. It continued even after starting the car again when leaving my location. It wasn’t doing it before yesterday, and then while positioning the car for the tow truck. But the back up cam started going crazy at me like I was about to hit something??? but nothing was there. Then eyesight was “disabled, check manual” a couple times today upon starting it. But no codes thrown thrown outside of the eyesight thing. I’ve seen a transmission issues and stalling and ecu issues with the 2018 & 2019 but quite a few people on facebook and reddit similar issues in '21. Dealer found no codes and couldn't recreate it so they told me to come get it.

47 Power Train problem of the 2014 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 11/23/2021

The clutch throw out bearing and clutch needs to be replaced at 54,000 miles because of failure. This is a $2000 repair! this is a known issue, why isn’t this a recall?.

48 Power Train problem of the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 11/19/2021

I have owned this vehicle since 2018 and at random times on the highway the engine will lose power and the car will drift to a halt. No warning signs beforehand and this has happened at various stages of highway drives. Pressing the accelerator will only cause the car to slow more. After each time I have had it towed to the nearest Subaru dealership and they cannot find any issues. I have read several other complaints on here describing the issue perfectly. It seems either Subaru cannot figure out whats wrong or simply doesn't care. I have been very lucky to have gotten to safety each time this has happened but I feel serious harm can be caused by this problem. My vehicle has been inspected by several different Subaru dealerships and I get the same runaround every time. The service reps cannot find anything wrong with the engine and no codes come up when they plug it in. Subaru needs to figure this out as there is clear documentation here that this is a large problem. This has forced me to sell what otherwise would be a good car and find something else.

49 Power Train problem of the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 10/30/2021

The vehicle has experience numerous times now, and has been to the dealer for repairs regarding an unanticipated loss of all ability to accelerate or maintain speed until the vehicle is shutdown and restarted. This has caused significant stress when traveling on a fast moving freeway in the fast lane and then having to quickly get to the shoulder to "power-cycle" the vehicle. The dealer has seen the vehicle 5 times for this issue in the 10 months we have owned it, starting at 6k miles and we just got it back from 2 weeks with the dealer; today it has 9k miles. The dealer has told is that the vehicle losing all power and ability to accelerate or maintain speed is a safety feature. I feel having my wife and three children in a vehicle the significantly increases the chances for collision as very much the opposite of a safety feature. We have tried working with the dealer over the past 6 months and 3k miles, but need the help of an advocate who can influence the dealer to correct the issue before someone gets hurt or worse. The date shown below is only the first instance of many instances of power loss.

50 Power Train problem of the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 10/15/2021

The rear differential on my Subaru Crosstrek hybrid has failed twice. The first failure occurred around 12,000 miles and the second around 50,000 miles, both while maneuvering slowly in a parking lot. There were no warning lights or messages beforehand. The failure caused grinding and drivetrain resistance while turning. During the second incident, a certified Subaru dealer confirmed the rear differential had failed again. They also discovered that Subaru had issued a revised version of the differential that is no longer compatible with the original axles, requiring additional parts to complete the repair. I was informed the original design has been discontinued, suggesting Subaru was aware of an issue. This kind of drivetrain failure is a significant safety risk, especially if it were to occur at higher speeds or in traffic. The issue has now occurred twice on my vehicle under normal driving conditions, and was verified both times by a 2 Subaru dealerships in southern California. When I returned to pick up my vehicle, I was told by the service technician that another hybrid Crosstrek had just come in for the exact same failure. Additionally, a local independent Subaru performance shop mentioned they have performed three similar rear differential replacements this year. This clearly appears to be a recurring problem, potentially linked to a design flaw, and I believe it warrants further investigation.

51 Power Train problem of the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 10/08/2021

Ignition key stuck in the ignition cannot be removed from ignition after parking. This problem never occurred in previous 5 years of ownership. It happens nearly every time the car is driven, and has been reported widely on the internet by Subaru owners. In many cases, owners have not been able to remove the keys at all, and have had to call for assistance. On the advice of a repair tech, we replaced our battery, which, at 5 years old, was probably due to be replaced. This has not solved the problem.

52 Power Train problem of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 07/30/2021

I have been experiencing shuddering/jerking/hesitation in my vehicle since July. The dealership has had it in their service department several times and cannot diagnose the issue. Subaru of America was contacted and gave no resolution to repairing the vehicle. They did not inspect the vehicle, rather gathered the "data" from the dealership. The shuddering/jerking/hesitation happens from a start to stop position and is incredibly dangerous when pulling out into traffic or crossing over lanes in a left hand turn. This malfunction can cause a collision and is a huge safety concern of mine. I do not feel comfortable putting my life at risk driving this vehicle. The dealership has only tested the cvt transmission and ran "data" and cannot seem to tell me what is wrong with the vehicle, though there is clearly an issue, whether it is the cvt transmission or another component of the vehicle. I see several similar complaints on the NHTSA website for the Crosstrek dating back to 2015. I am confused as to why the manufacturer is not being held responsible for a defect that is so dangerous. Is it going to take someone getting seriously injured or a death before this is investigated? I encourage other Crosstrek owners to come forward and report similar issues you are having to NHTSA.

53 Power Train problem of the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 07/20/2021

My daughter was in process of pulling her car into the garage when it experienced sudden acceleration and crashed into the garage. My daughter was unable to stop the car as the brake system failed during the incident. She is now too terrified to drive the car. Subaru claims that the car is and has been operating as intended. The Subaru eyesight, anti-lock braking, vehicle dynamic control systems all failed during the sudden acceleration event. It's fortunate that this incident did not happen at a stoplight (intersection).

54 Power Train problem of the 2014 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 07/05/2021

Multiple alerts and codes displayed for vehicle control system mostly related to transmission system.

55 Power Train problem of the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 07/05/2021

When I put the car in park the key would turn off the car but not come out of the ignition. The only way to get the key out was to turn the car back on and try again, sometimes 5+ times. When I took the car in for repair at a Subaru dealership they said this was a constant Subaru problem and that my shifter plate guide would need to be replaced. They charged me $600 but after searching Subaru forums I found that Subaru will sometimes pay for this repair because it is a known issue with a repair bulletin number (16-112-18). I believe this is a widespread defect and Subaru should pay for all repairs, not simply the repairs of consumers who have the resources to know to call the company.

56 Power Train problem of the 2014 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 06/11/2021

On June 11, 2021, my wife and I were driving our 2014 Subaru Crosstrek (120,000 miles) from milwaukee to manitowish waters, WI. About 20 miles north of milwaukee on I-41 northbound, my wife was driving at 70 mph when suddenly we both noticed a strong lurching from the cvt transmission. This was followed a few seconds later by a complete lockup of all four wheels on our car. Fortunately this did not happen in the left lane or we would've been in a terrible accident. My wife managed to steer the skidding car onto the highway shoulder until it came to a rest. The engine was still running. The transmission was completely dead. We called a towing company to tow the car to sommers Subaru in mequon WI. They diagnosed the problem as sudden catastrophic transmission failure and told us that the 2014 Crosstrek had tons of problems with the cvt. We told the service department that we could have been seriously injured or killed had my wife not been driving in the right lane of the interstate. We paid $7,800 for a remanufactured cvt as the power train was out of warranty. I have seen one other report of catastrophic cvt failure on your website involving a 2014 Crosstrek (danbury CT). I'm sure there are others out in the world who have also suffered this, and god knows how many may have resulted in accidents with injuries or death. Perhaps they did not know to contact NHTSA with their experiences. I pray that you will initiate an investigation into this issue and force Subaru USA to issue a recall on their 2014 Crosstreks to replace the transmissions that are the source of these frightening incidents. Thank you.

57 Power Train problem of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 05/19/2021

Shuddering - cvt belt or pulley not working properly? jerking, hesitation - Crosstrek will not go when the gas pedal is pressed or hesitates or pauses for a moment after the gas pedal is engaged.

58 Power Train problem of the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 05/06/2021

I noticed that when got to accelerate from stoping that car won't go. When I hit the gas the vehicle moves only a little and if I push my foot on the acceleration peddle harder and all the way down the vehicle actually slows down. It happened this morning on city street roads not going any faster than 45mph. The only way to get it to go again is taking my foot off the gas peddle and re placing it and it then will go back to accelerate as it should when I press the gas peddle. I have gotten it looked at suburu dealership and they were unable to figure out the problem. It happened to me twice this morning. Once when turning off my street taking a right trying to accelerate to 25mph and then another when trying to accelerate after a stop light on a 45 mph road. I will be reporting it from now on every time it happens. This is very unsafe, it could easily cause an accident. Thank goodness no one was right behind at those moments when I went to accelerate.

59 Power Train problem of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

Hill descent, sway control, abs lights came on at the same time on the way to work, I was coming of an exit. I had the codes checked and nothing was showing. Over a month later, the check engine and transmission temp lights came on my to work. I immediately turned around and parked my car. Trans temp light was blinking. A few days later I had it taken to a Subaru dealership for service. I paid for a diagnostic. The result was a $1600 bill for a valve body kit, trans cover gasket, o-ring, trans body wiring harness.

62 Power Train problem of the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 03/04/2021

When crossing across traffic to get in the lane from right or left turns. There is slow and sluggish as it wants to stall or stay out in cross traffic to cause a collision!! it has happened since I purchased it from a non Subaru dealer beginning of 2021. There should be a recall as this sluggish acceleration problem can cause an accident.

65 Power Train problem of the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 10/03/2020

When I go to park and turn off the key it locks half way and won't come out. Have to reverse and pull forward sometimes several times before it will turn completely off. Subaru has a technical service date: 03/15/18 16-112-18r revised bulletin about an issue with the "shift selecter mechanism. " Subaru is aware of the persistent problem, but has not issued a recall.

67 Power Train problem of the 2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 08/10/2020

I was driving my 2015 Subaru Crosstrek. I had been on the highway for an hour. I was going about 78mph. The car suddenly started getting loud and the tachometer was revving down. It went quickly from 3 to 0 and immediately shut down. When I realized it was revving down and getting louder I began to shift towards the lanes on the right to the break down lane. My car didn't make it. It was about 3 min from when I realized something was wrong. I got stuck in the lane right next to the passing lane with 2 other lanes on the right of me to get to the breakdown lane. My car had power, my hazards were on, my radio was on, my windows opened and the car wouldn't turn on. I got my car towed to my moms and it turned on at arrival about 14 min after it shut down on me. I was able to drive it home 14 min away and then drive it 35 min to a Subaru dealer. The dealer says its the battery but it doesnt make sense to me if the car ignition wouldn't go on but lights radio and windows worked and 15 min later the car turned on and drove like nothing happened.

68 Power Train problem of the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

. I expect a full recall on this model years and relative my vehicles with this specific engine due to its obsolescence in the subsequent years. I feel as if I was sold a lemon and defective engine that will eventually become a death trap dear bloomington Subaru service manager, I want to reiterate that this is not an isolated incident limited to your facility. Over the course of this vehicle’s history, I have visited more than five different Subaru dealerships — including white bear luther Subaru, miller hill Subaru, walser Subaru, morrie’s minnetonka Subaru, and your own luther bloomington Subaru — for recurring ecm and engine-related concerns. Despite multiple ignition coil replacements, repeated ecm flashes/reprogramming, and assurances that the most recent updates would permanently resolve the issue, my Crosstrek continues to suffer from clunking, rattling, difficulties accelerating, rough idling, and even complete stalling when idling or in hot temperatures. At my most recent visit to bloomington Subaru, the ecm was not loaded with the current software, ecm c1424 and c1422 and diag trouble code p0011 code. There are 5-7 Subaru bulletins about ecm and these codes. I had this b4 2yrs ago yet the dealership won’t assist with repairs or costs associated with this defective oil control valve part as well as the defective design in the ecm / ecu and this specific engine in the 2019 Crosstrek, of which is no longer produced or manufactured. The ecm or oil control valve has since been “replaced” and swapped with other components in future generations of Subarus this is defective & mechanically related, not from wear and tear or personal usethere is a recall where the camshaft can break and the pcv too leading to complete catastrophic engine failure, which is a safety issue and expired, but despite 5 ecm flashes, 3/4 sets of ignition coils my vehicle still struggles with the same issues today, costing me $750 and months with my car in the shop, recall this engine.

69 Power Train problem of the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek
