Electronic Stability Control Problems of Subaru Crosstrek

Subaru Crosstrek owners have reported 11 electronic stability control related problems since 1996. Table 1 shows the 1 most common electronic stability control problems. The number one most common problem is related to the vehicle's electronic stability control (11 problems). For details of each of the problem category, use the links in the table.

Electronic Stability Control problem #1

I was driving the car when all the lights on dash come on. Constant jerking/bucking of the car without increasing pressure to the gas peddle. Meter rpms indicator needle is erratic moving back and forth while the engine revs. The mpg needle goes from plus to minus erratically also. At this time the car is not dependable. I have brought the car to granite Subaru 4 times for the same complaint. They say they have used the diagnostic meter to determine the problem but it still remains, now even worse. I have discussed the problem with a engineer and 2 auto mechanics who feel the problem is with the computer. I mentioned this to granite Subaru and was told that was not the problem. My plan at this time is to bring my car to autozone and have them evaluate my car. I am hoping to get a list of error codes to bring to Subaru with the hope that the 5th time will be my last. I have receipts for what has transpired so far but do not have a way to upload them and send with this report. Please send address and I will make copies and send. Thank you.

Electronic Stability Control problem #2

Check engine light, oil temp, abs light, cruise control light, traction control light and abs light turned on at 90,000 miles. Had vehicle serviced by 2 different mechanics and transmission codes still appear.

Electronic Stability Control problem #3

While driving on the highway, the engine just stopped and the entire vehicle turned off (computers and all). The cruise control was being turned off (from going about 75) because I was approaching traffic and it just turned off. Brakes still worked and I got on the shoulder. Then when trying to turn it back on, it would have very strange noise like an old fan or clunking. I would press my accelerator all the way down and it would only go 5 miles an hour. Finally after turning the car off an restarting enough times it ran normally. But then the computer was on the fritz. Flashing the high incline sign, the four wheel drive sign, and flashing all the cruise control. And the check engine light is on.

Electronic Stability Control problem #4

My battery keep draining all the time since I bought the car I have changed 3 of them. Two of the battery were still okay but I still changed them. Also, all the warning lights on the dashboard keep on and off without the check engine light. I brought the car to the dealer and they fixed the brake switch recall and I also mention the problem to them but they could not find anything wrong with the car. Few days later, I brought the car back to the dealer because the warning lights were on and off on the dashboard. They diagnosed the car and said the car need to replace the valve body transmission which I doubt that my car has problem with the transmission. I also have done some research and a lot of people who own the Subaru have that same issue. I personally used to own the Subaru brz and that car also has the problem with the battery and the dealer just replaced it for me.

Electronic Stability Control problem #5

Upon starting car in driveway found power steering sluggish and requiring great force (operative, but no apparent boost). Engine sluggisn like limp-home mode. Additionally mil, tc and other lights illuminated on dash. I took photo. I forget if it threw odb codes, but I remember that it two battery disconnect cycles, and two odb code clearing cycles, to regain normal function. I forget id any odb codes were set. Here are the conditions: daytime morning, about 11am, ambient temperature about 65 degrees. Car parked in driveway. I previously (about 30 minutes before) moved car from street to driveway. Date listed below is approximate. I will update when I check exif data on pix.

Electronic Stability Control problem #6

When starting the vehicle, the abs, hill assist, and vehicle dynamics control lights all light up and lock down the car. Will continue to drive but the next time the car is started, it may not back up or go in drive again.

Electronic Stability Control problem #7

While driving the car at 70 mph on a freeway it suddenly veered to the right. Quick action on my part kept the car from running off the road onto the shoulder. I took the car to the local Subaru dealer at the first available appointment. They inspected the car and found the on-board computer showed an indication of a steering angle sensor fault. They kept the car overnight and road tested it but because they could to duplicate the problem they made no repairs to the vehicle. At a minimum, I feel they should have replaced the steering angle sensor and asked them to do so and they refused. I consider this car unsafe to drive.

Electronic Stability Control problem #8

Power steering issues. Light illuminates on dashboard and power steering problems occur. It's only 4 years old (never driven off road) taken well care of, and there are serious problems with the electronical part of the power steering saying there is a problem and when driving it locks up making turns really hard when turning the wheel. Then our car shut off like the battery was dead for half a day and we tried one last time to start it before jumping and it started up and worked. Seems like something is wired wrong.

Electronic Stability Control problem #9

When I start my car or randomly while I am driving the warning lights for my automatic braking system, traction control, and hill assist turn on. When this happens, my gear shifter locks up and when I press the brakes the rear lights don't illuminate while these warning lights are active. I have an automatic transmission. The warning lights activate randomly, whether I'm stationary or in motions, regardless of setting.

Electronic Stability Control problem #10

While driving on the highway the check engine and traction control lights came on. I have a diagnostic code reader which sent the details to my phone dtc p1449 evap system clog detected (air filter). I called my mechanic who said it would be safe to drive home. . . While driving home in the rain I lost control of the vehicle and went off the road. Luckily no one was hurt. When I got home, my mechanic said it was a faulty purge valve which would normally be a simple fix but the issue was well known with the vehicle and was now a superseded part. The cost would quadruple because the check assembly was completely redesigned and several parts needed to be replaced. If this was such a known issue, which required a redesign of the system, why isnt it on recall!!! especially, if the computer takes away the vehicle's safety features like traction control. Come on Subaru. I expect better quality and service! NHTSA please escalate these matters.

Electronic Stability Control problem #11

On snow covered, ice covered or variable snow, ice, wet pavement surfaces the vehicle exhibits significant rear end sway. It feels as if the car is starting to oversteer without any driver input. This is generally going straight with steady or no throttle input above 30 mph on highway/freeway roads.
