1 Steering problem of the 2021 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/01/2025

Driving on the garden state parkway in NJ on August 1st at approximately 1pm my car just stopped in traffic and steering locked up and all lights came on dashboard along with a constant beeping sound-I was in the middle of a four lane highway traveling south-I could not get out of my car and feared someone would hit me as I was a "sitting duck" while cars were swerving around me-my only saving grace was that my flashers worked after I turned them on-I called roadside assistance as I was starting to panic and was told they could not help me as I was on a private road-I saw a helicopter overhead and at the same time a police office weaving in and out of traffic behind me to slow and stop the traffic-he then proceeded to push my car off the road with his car to the shoulder and called a tow truck-car was towed to nearest Subaru dealer where they performed a diagnostic test and found nothing wrong with my car!! how could that be?? I was then charged for the test and the tow-have called Subaru customer care several times but they say they cannot help me because the test result showed nothing-please help me as I no longer have peace of mind driving this vehicle and I am a single woman in my 70's who needs to drive long distances several times a month- there were no previous warnings in my car it just stopped.

3 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/11/2025

I would like to bring your attention to an issue I recently had experienced concerning my 2018 Subaru Forester that I had purchased new in June of 2018, and to date has only 48,518 miles. A steering rattle sound/vibration had developed while driving at normal speeds on paved roadways. I made an appointment with my local Subaru dealer to have the condition checked out. After a test drive and inspection by the technician, it was determined that both front transverse bushings needed to be replaced, and a wheel alignment performed following the repair. I have done some research and discovered that Subaru had changed the inferior material of the cushion portion of the front transverse bushing due to premature failure of the component (reference: Subaru TSB 05-63-18r). It is negligent for Subaru not to inform the consumers knowing that a potential safety issue existed in the steering system of the vehicle. I believe the Subaru corporation should have initiated a recall of the effected vehicles and replace the defective components, at no cost to the consumer, in order to restore the safety and drivability of the vehicle.

4 Steering problem of the 2021 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/10/2025

While driving on I-17 southbound near mile marker 311 at approximately 75 mph, I experienced a sudden and dangerous malfunction of the lane keep assist (auto-steer) system in a 2021 Subaru Forester. The feature was active at the time and unexpectedly veered the vehicle sharply toward the concrete wall on the left shoulder of the highway. I attempted to regain control, but due to the abrupt nature of the malfunction, I overcorrected and collided with the wall on the rear driver side. There were no vehicles in the immediate vicinity, or this could have resulted in a multi-vehicle collision at high speed. I hit my head during the impact but did not require emergency medical services at the scene. Road conditions were dry and clear, with no visible debris or extreme weather factors. There were no warning lights or error messages from the vehicle prior to or during the incident. The auto-steer system did not disengage on its own before veering off course. This was the first time driving this particular vehicle, which was a company car, and I immediately reported the incident to my employer. The damage was reported and the vehicle is seemingly available for inspection. At the time of this report, the issue has not yet been formally diagnosed by a dealer or service technician. The failure of this driver-assist feature significantly endangered my safety and potentially the safety of others had there been nearby traffic. I am filing this report so the issue can be investigated, and similar malfunctions prevented in the future.

5 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/15/2025

1. The car's steering could be malfunctioning . The car is available for inspection upon request. 2. The steering wheel occasionally and without warning suddenly feels loose and "disconnected" from its ability to steer the car -- until I turn the steering wheel about a quarter to a half an inch and the steering feels normal again. I worry the issue (which so far has not interfered with steering the car) may worsen and possibly become hazardous. 3. I took the car to my regular licensed mechanic who did not experience the issue when he drove it. Nevertheless, the issue reported here exists as my wife and I have each experienced it. 4. The steering has not been inspected by Subaru, the police, insurance reps or others, other than my regular mechanic who has found no issues with the steering. 5. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the issue first occurring except for the replacement of a tie rod by my regular mechanic, which may be coincidental. 6. This issue has existed since at least last February with no worsening of the condition. My regular mechanic has assured me there is no danger as he has checked the mechanical aspects of the steering (linkages, tie rods, etc. ).

6 Steering problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/25/2025

After a recent regular tire rotation and balance, my vehicle steering felt shakier than normal. Had rotation and balance checked again, but problem continued. Thought an alignment might rectify the problem but was informed this was not needed. Went to my regular mechanic and did notice the steering vibration. Found that it had to do with the forward bushings, and provided me a copy of a service bulletin issued by Subaru dated 6/20/18, #05-63-18r addressing this item, and also provided me with a video and picture of the problem to provide to Subaru repair. Since the Subaru dealer that I went to was not interested in repairing with the information provided, went back to my mechanic and had the work done. No more vibrating steering wheel.

7 Steering problem of the 2025 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/22/2025

Bought 2025 Subaru Forester in January 2025. Within 300 miles of driving brought it back to place I bought it, complained about constant vibraton in sterring wheel at high speeds around 55 - 65 mph. They said the wheels were out of balance, they re balanced them and the problem was resolved, but it wasn't. I brought it back to them at 600 miles they looked it over and took it for a ride they said they did not feel the wheel vibration. I said how could you not feel it. I brought it back a 3rd time at 800 miles. They took it for a ride with me in passanger seat . Even as I told them I could feel it in armrest they still said they did not feel it. I opened a case with Subaru of America advocates. They advised me to take it to a different dealer which I did. The second dealer acknowledge the wheel vibration at high speeds. They had my SUV for about 10 days they tried several different brands of tires . They same result happended . Then they said one brand of tires the vibration was less but it is not less it is about the same. They are trying to get me some new tires but I don't think it is the tires. The supension has been looked over by both Subaru dealers. They say it is safe to drive. But it still vibrates it is not just road noise. I just want the vehicle fixed properly.

8 Steering problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/21/2025

The vehicle dynamics control safety system malfunctioned and forced me to drive straight on a curved banked overpass into the concrete barrier.

9 Steering problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/06/2025

Power steering failed. On January 6th 2025, night time with cold weather conditions, leaving a parking lot the power steering stopped working. Vehicle was very difficult to steer. Nearly all dash light came on. Took vehicle to dealership, they found the power steering control module at fault. Module was replaced with updated part number 34710sg102 per TSB# -04-24-18.

10 Steering problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/02/2025

My Forester just totally shuts down sometimes from the auto start feature in traffic or intersections . Errors come up . The wheel locks and I must put the car in park , turn it off and turn it back on. Very scary and very dangerous.

11 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/03/2024

- steering and suspension were affected. The car is available for inspection upon request. - my safety and the safety of others were affected by the fact that the car was shaking rather intensely while driving at highway speeds. I was worried a steering failure could occur. - my licensed mechanic diagnosed the problem as a right front lower control arm assembly problem with torn bushing. (please see attached. ) he replaced the assembly. Shortly thereafter, the steering wheel would feel occasionally loose and move on its own. The mechanic then did an alignment which did not help. The steering issue that came about after the control arm assembly was replaced is the subject of a complaint I filed with you yesterday: 11683647 - the problem being reported here has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative or others. - there were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. - interestingly, the failure of the control arm assembly occurred at 51012 miles, right after the warranty ran out. My wife and I are seniors and we drive with care. Under the circumstances, this component of the car should have lasted much longer than it did. Now we worry the left side assembly may fail, especially since we have a loose steering problem that I reported yesterday.

12 Steering problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/29/2024

The horn stopped working. Upon inspection at the Subaru dealership they confirmed that the steering wheel roll connector had an open circuit. After researching this, I found it can also affect the air bag. When I asked the dealership if the airbag could be effected, they said yes and couldn’t confirm or deny if it would or wouldn’t work. The passenger airbag also stopped working around the same time, so that was concerning.

13 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/05/2024

Starting up the car in the morning after a long day stuck in traffic (over 100 degree f weather), moved about 5 feet then the eyesight system stopped working, rear braking stopped, and power steering gave out - the car started and the engine ran normally. The car was abandoned as unsafe until diagnostics could be performed and a different car was used to get around . That evening the car started up fine, also the next morning to reproduce conditions. Tested the battery, which showed "good" (93% charge/40%healthy). I suspect that, in the morning the a/c, headlights, radio, backup lights, etc. . . Put a large draw on the electrical system resulting in a system wide shutdown of adaptive features - however loss of power steering is insane and can easily result in death if it happens while driving especially while making a turn if the driver is not prepared/strong enough to force it. The linking of non-critical system to help the driver to an essential system is just asking for trouble.

14 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/14/2024

Lca lower control arm front bushing on right and left front for 2018 Subaru Forester is a known issue with every Forester. Mine had only 55k miles when the right front started shaking and now the left is doing so and I am only at 60k miles!!.

15 Steering problem of the 2021 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/09/2024

The automatic shut off feature causes the car to lose all power. No power at all in the middle of traffic and I can't even use hazard lights to warn anyone. When at a stop the auto shut off turns off the car and when I take my foot off the brake it completely dies. It has happened 5 times in the last 3 days. Very dangerous. Imagine this happening on the freeway during rush hour. It's a miracle if no one has been killed. I saw countless posts from others on different forums. I have only owned this car for a week and half, taking it to the dealer today. This needs to be a recall paid for by Subaru, it is unacceptable.

18 Steering problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/18/2023

On 11/18/2023, as soon as I started the vehicle, put it in reverse and let off the brake to back down the driveway, the car made a loud unfamiliar noise (like bzzzzzt) and suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated on its own. Nothing worked, brakes, automatic gear shift, gas pedal, and steering were all disengaged. It was terrifying to me and I was worried about anyone or anything behind me. At the street corner the car turned somehow (I was trying to steer, but the vehicle was jostling wildly and the steering, brakes didn't work at all), ran over a high curb, knocked over a street sign, and took out the neighbor’s sprinkler system, and then came to a stop, dead!.

19 Steering problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/10/2023

I was on cruise control, and it randomly decided to go 81 mph instead of 50 mph I set it to, it did not respond when I tried to turn off the cruise control, and I ended up crashing into a semi, I survived but my [xxx] daughter died. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

20 Steering problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/16/2023

For the last few weeks on several occasions the ignition key remained stuck after parking and shutting off the engine. I was eventually able to release the key but was in a bit of a panic. I believe this should be a recall as I have read about this happening to many Subaru owners.

21 Steering problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/16/2023

The bushings on both sides of the lower control arm were confirmed broken at Subaru dealership and replaced. This made the steering wobble over 55 mph. It was very dangerous because I could have lost steering control. There was no warning. My car only has 54,000 miles. I believe 2 weeks after the replacement of the entire lower control arm and both bushings the problem is starting again. Lots of other people have reported this problem and Subaru of America offers you money to help have it fixed if you call them.

22 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/18/2023

While driving steering wheel freezes and driver is not able to control steering. Engine quits .

23 Steering problem of the 2007 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/16/2023

Started getting a vibration I thought was a tire problem. It would only show up after 30 minutes or so of driving. It happened several times while trying to have the tire store figure it out. On Friday 15 Sep 2023 we drove at highway speeds to dayton and back. Noticed it occur twice. The next morning we were a few miles from home checking out a dog boarding place. We went to leave and heard a loud pop. The lower right control arm broke. If it had happed the previous day it could have been fatal! this vehicle has been almost exclusively service by busam Subaru at all recommended short intervals, 3,750miles. The recall for this was performed by busam on1/31/2012. They always state they have performed a complete inspection and what needs attention. I am now having service done locally since all of their latest services have been dismal at best. I have counted on them to keep me, my family, and my Forester safe. Very disappointing considering how this could have turned out.

24 Steering problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/10/2023

The horn stopped working in the vehicle. This is a known issue with many Subarus. The horn is essential for safety reasons due to this the vehicle cannot pass a safety inspection. The culprit of this issue is the electrical coil spring component in the steering wheel behind the air bag. The component has multiple connections going to it including an airbag connection. In the event of accident it is not guaranteed that the spring coil component would deliver the signal for the air bag to deploy. This component is defective in many Subarus and is a very costly repair due to all the electrical and safety components connected to cloak spring. This component has been an issue in previous Subaru models but has not been extended to newer models that clearly have the same issue. Please see document attached.

25 Steering problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/06/2023

Vehicle accelerated from a stop sign at high speed and brakes were pushed down all the way with no respond the steering wheels was stiff and the vehicle continued at high speed on its own crashing curbs side walk vegetation along the way until final crash at a tree. Not warning lamps messages and air bag did not deploy. Car engine remained on at time of crash until manually turned off. Safety of driver & passenger and others near by were at very high risk. Head on collision with other vehicles and homes could have happened. Insurance adjuster inspected and determined it is a "total lose" but did not gave reason for incident. Police report was done and suggested to follow up with dealership. Emailed about this incident to Subaru dealership. Unknown if any additional inspection was done.

26 Steering problem of the 2011 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/20/2023

I bought my vehicle new from oakland Subaru. From the beginning I had to add about a quart of oil every month and a half to two months. I thought this was normal. When my vehicle had approximately 73,800miles, I went to fremont Subaru for a regular motor oil change. I was asked about the oil consumption. After I reported how much oil I had been replacing on a regular basis, they asked me to return after 1,200 miles to see how much oil my car had consumed. They found out that my vehicle had oil leaks and the engine had to be replaced at 75,000 miles. Subaru paid for the service to be done. Today I took my vehicle to fremont Subaru for a regular motor oil change which I usually do. My vehicle currently has 134,605 miles. The service representative, devon devlugt, informed me that my vehicle is unsafe to operate due to several oil leaks from the engine. The engine has less than 60,000 miles since it was replaced. This is the second time my vehicle becomes inoperable due to engine oil leaks. Fremont Subaru dealership will repair the engine for $4,687. Kelly blue book estimates my vehicle to be worth $4,700. Subaru must be held accountable for the vehicles they sell to consumers. My vehicle has had this problem since I bought it. There have been enough vehicles presenting this problem that Subaru paid for my vehicle’s engine to be replaced. Please hold Subaru responsible for engine failures/malfunctions.

Additionally, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the rear brake lights failed to illuminate while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the brake light switch under NHTSA campaign number: 19v149000 (exterior lighting). The failure mileage was 19,000.

28 Steering problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 05/14/2023

Steering rattle sound / steering wheel vibration this is a potential safety issue especially when driving free way at 60 or 65k mph. I would like to request if the lower control arm bushing can be part of a recall for Subaru Forester. Please see attached service bulletin.

29 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 04/11/2023

When the vehicle is driven 60 mph or greater, the front end/steering starts to vibrate and rattle.

30 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/10/2023

Steering wheel locking intermittently, without warning. White car symbol appears between lanes, followed by green car symbol as the wheel locks. Took the car to liberty Subaru, my dealer, emerson, NJ. First two times garage unable to replicate the problem, no repairs done. Third time this happened to me, the car started rocking from side to side on the road as the wheel remained locked, terrifying. I called the dealer, they told me to turn off the safety system (lane assist) which I did. Back to the same garage, same outcome. Could not replicate the problem. 4th time this happened to me, I had not reset the lane assist and the same warning symbols appeared as the wheel locked. Back to garage, told me they were not going to give me a loaner car as they cannot replicate the problem. Reported to Subaru of America, no response to first email. Second email acknowledged receipt and gave me a case number: case#?230306-0200125. Car remains at liberty Subaru, it is dangerous to drive. I will end up in an accident as I cannot control the car when the wheel is locked, and I will endanger others on the road at the same time. Dates are approx, occurred 4 different days over two weeks approx. Speed ranged from 41 miles per hour to 60 miles per hour when it occurred,.

32 Steering problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/05/2023

The vehicle is a 2015 Subaru Forester. At that time, the car had 47800 miles on it. I started to sense a shaking or vibration on the steering wheel, especially at highway speeds. I took it to a local Subaru dealer and the dealer technician found the lower control arm bushings to be work/torn. I have been driving for over 40 years and have never had to have the bushings replaced in any of my (Toyota) cars, especially at 47800 miles. I bought the car new. I live in the city and do not do any off road driving. I bought the car because of the eyesight safety system. I didn't realize Subaru's quality was not at the same level as Toyota. According to j. D. Power, "the bushings prevent metal-to-metal contact (friction) hence safeguarding the metal joints. " and "driving around with worn-out bushings can pose a threat to the driver and other road users. Worn-out bushings may also cause damage to the vehicle when its components snap. . Read more...

33 Steering problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/04/2022

Started the car and began to back out of driveway when power steering warning light came on and power steering was loss as soon as I began turning the wheel. Total loss of power steering. If this were to happen at highway speeds, unexpectedly, a major life threatening collision could occur. The odds of a probable coolision would be pretty high for even an experienced driver.

34 Steering problem of the 2006 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/18/2022

Front control arm failed on car. Which snapped the front axle and sway bar link on right side. Found out it was a known issue that was taken care of by dealer. Waiting to see if they will cover repairs.

35 Steering problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester
