1 Tailgate problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/05/2019

Yesterday 9/5/19 the tailgate strut on our 2015 Subaru forrester suddenly failed causing the rear gate which was open to abruptly fall onto my spouse's head while she was unloading groceries. The metal bolt with the round ball that fits into the end of the strut cracked off and appeared rusted at the edges. This appears to be the same/similar issue as NHTSA recall no. 08v-135 for the Subaru impreza. As far as I know there has not been a recall for this on the 2015 forrester for this issue. I will bring the vehicle to a Subaru dealer to have them inspect it. My wife has not seen a doctor for this (yet) but her head still hurts the next day and she was dizzy afterwards.

2 Tailgate problem of the 2014 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/21/2019

I walked behind the vehicle that was parked on side of the street, and pressed the button that activates the powered tailgate and causes it to open. As the tailgate was opening, the left tailgate gas lift support broke off from the tailgate. When the tailgate reached its maximum height, it slammed down in an unrestrained manner. Now whenever I try to use the automatic tailgate, it opens to the maximum height, then abruptly and without warning slams down with great force, with a potential to injure someone.

3 Tailgate problem of the 2014 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 05/23/2017

Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Subaru Forester xt. The contact stated that their friend was driving the vehicle. The contact's friend came to a stop. The contact's friend placed the vehicle in park. The vehicle went into reverse. The vehicle rolled over the contact's friends foot, crashed into a tree and damaged the tailgate. Their was nobody in the vehicle so no distraction. Their air bags did deploy. The contact was not in the vehicle. So they were not injured. However, the contact's friend suffered an injured foot. They did seek medical attention. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. So their was no other medical attention needed. No police report was made. The vehicle was taken to lake forest Subaru 23663 rockfield blvd, lake forest, CA 92630 (949) 837-3500 where the vehicle was diagnosed. The test read no damage. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 41,000. Jw.

4 Tailgate problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

On March 1, 2017 I was stopped at an intersection. After proceeding straight through the intersection and reaching a speed of approximately 10-15 mph I heard an alert in my car, and simultaneously heard cars behind me sounding their horns. I quickly looked up into the rear view mirror and saw that the tailgate of my car had opened without warning while I was in motion, causing my dog to fall out of the back. This occurred after traveling for approximately 6-8 miles without ever receiving a dashboard alert that the tailgate was open. There have been electronic issues with the car since I purchased it new. Sometimes the car won't recognize the key fob and the doors won't unlock, or the car won't start and I get an alert that there is no key detected (when it is in the cup holder mere inches from the push-button ignition start. ) twice the fasten seat belt alert has lighted and chimed, when the driver has the seat-belt fastened and there are no other passengers in the car. Oftentimes the tailgate won't open with the key fob or by utilizing the outside button - on this particular day it took me several minutes of fussing with all the controls before I could get the tailgate to open at all. This was the first time the tailgate opened on its own. The only other thing that I recall about what happened that day is that as I was going through the intersection my right front wheel dipped into a pothole with a significant jarring.

5 Tailgate problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

The tailgate on my 2016 Forester is so low when opened that I hit my head on it every time I reach into the car. I am 6 feet tall. Other people have the same experience with my tailgate. I had an earlier model Forester where this was not an issue. The Subaru dealers I complained to said that the hinges were designed so that a longer shock absorber or other after-market fix was not available and the problem could not be fixed until the model design was changed. This is dangerous!!.
