1 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2024

The contact owns a 2012 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that there was an abnormal whining sound coming from the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics and the contact was informed that there was a defective gasket on the transfer case and the transmission needed to be replaced. The transmission was replaced. The contact stated that while a relative was seated in the front passenger’s seat, the passenger’s side air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic where a code reader determined that there was a defect with the front passenger’s side air bag sensor. A dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was made to have the vehicle serviced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

2 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2023

Over the past three months, the front driver and passenger airbag lights have been on in my 2012 Subaru Impreza while driving. Documented videos attached were on 01/11/23, 01/20/23, and 04/04/23. It has happened at least 6 times and possibly more. I contacted Subaru after it happened and took it to the local Subaru dealer, who advised me to bring the car in when the airbag light was on, as at my 1/17/23 visit, they could not figure out the cause of the airbag light. On 4/4/23, while driving on the expressway, the airbag light came on, and as advised, I drove it straight to the local dealership. Code b1650 was pulled off the airbag system, which I am told could be 3 different reasons. On 4/10/23, I contacted Subaru customer advocacy and said the local dealer's solutions were unacceptable and to wait and see. Again on 4/12/23, while my daughter was driving on the expressway with my son in the passenger seat, the airbag lights on again for both the passenger and driver. As I told Subaru on 4/10/23, this Subaru Impreza is unsafe to drive, and the airbags would not deploy in the case of an accident with both airbag lights on. This is a very dangerous situation that could end up with some very dire consequences. The ods system was previously replaced under NHTSA #15v419000, but it appears that the recall part may also be defective. The passenger seat has not been altered or wet to cause malfunctions. It is a defect in the Subaru airbag system.

3 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2022

I just bought this car. I looked recall history. I saw that one of the recalls for this car was faulty (ods)occupants detection system and the record showed that it is fixed. However, I just found out today that ods system is still faulty.

4 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2022

The airbag warning light has been lit within the dashboard. The front passenger seat airbag is faulty and is not able to correctly sense when a passenger is within the seat or not, which disables the airbags. This can be deadly to the passenger if in an accident. The issue seems to be in the ods passenger seat mat that determines when the airbag is active or not. If moisture is able to get within the mat, then it can short the circuit and cause airbags to not deploy. My car was "supposed" to already been fixed with the issue in 2015 on the recall #wqt55, NHTSA campaign 15v419000, but I don't believe the underlying issue was fixed correctly or the same part has failed again. Looking further into recalls, the exact same issue is happening again with Subarus with #wra-24 and NHTSA campaign 24v227. The dealer has asked me to pay over $1700 on to replace this part. Subaru America should fully cover the cost of any passenger ods issue especially when there have already been two recalls with the exact same issue.

5 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

Passenger airbag system intermittently remains off when passenger is seated in front passenger seat. Sometimes it appears to operate normally, but about half the time the passenger airbag indicates off when it should be on. Vehicle motion does not seem to matter, wet conditions does not seem to matter either. Unknown whether this is a passenger detection malfunction or a passenger airbag malfunction.

6 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2020

Front passenger ods malfunctions exactly per the description listed in recall #wqt-55 under safety campaign 15v419000 and had made previous attempts to have it addressed for at least 2 years now through Subaru. However my vehicle was manufactured just outside of the manufacturing date range of the recall. Took vehicle to dealership to address other outstanding recall items and asked to have issue diagnosed for the ods. Technicians found code b1650, which matches one of the dtcs of the recall. Called Subaru corporate again to request the malfunction be addressed and they could not cover the cost of the repair of the ods as the vehicle does not fall under the manufacturing date range. A copy of the Subaru recall has been attached with this message for reference.

7 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2020

I very rarely detail my vehicle. Only once when I bought it in 2013 and again recently. Both times, the seats were still wet from the detailing process when I picked it up. Both times, while someone was sitting in the passenger seat while it was still slightly wet, the dashboard lights showed that the passenger airbag was not on. It didn't matter if the car was moving or stationary. Once the seat dried, the airbag appeared to function normally. My husband took the attached picture while I was sitting in the passenger seat.

8 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2019

When driving with a passenger the air bag for the passenger will not turn on and dashboard lights will come on.

9 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2019

Passenger airbag turns off while there is a passenger in the car. I have had it checked at john howard Subaru in morgantown, wv. They were unable to find an issue. It has happened at least three times to me as a passenger in the car. I have attached two pictures of the lights while I was in the passenger seat. I wasn't wetthe invoice from the service appointment to have it checked is attached as well. The last occurrence of this was July 14, 2019. Thanks.

10 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2019

Manufacturer recall numbertkc19 - NHTSA recall number19v009000. Various Subaru dealerships are booked through October '19, and January '20 in the MA area. This is forcing people to drive with defective vehicles for far to long. The only information I could get out of the phone reps was that they are limited to how many of these recalls they can perform a day. There should be no limits. It's unsafe for the wait time to be 6 to 9 months to get the repair fixed.

11 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2018

Occupant detection sustem on passenger side malfunction, does not always recognize passenger. Sometime s it stops working in middle of trip. Happens sporadically, but is becoming more frequent and does not always resolve with restarting car. Has to do with capacitance detection, but so far Subaru dealers I contact act like it's not an issue though earlier model apparently has recall for exact issue. And no the passenger isn't wet. Has been occurring for over a year and we have pulled over and restarted car, but on recent trip it was much worse. And shouldn't be happening anyway!.

12 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2018

There is a safety issue with the occupant detection system. When there is a passenger in the front right seat the airbag sign will say passenger airbag off. This will happen when the car is moving or stationary.

13 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2018

Passenger and driver's air bags will show disabled whenever an electronic device is present on the person in the seat. Occurs in all conditions. Does not enable after removing electronic device from person.

14 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2017

Passenger airbag occupant detection system (ods) turns airbag off with adult in the front passenger seat. Adult passenger had seat upright, everything dry. No devices plugged in. We had been driving for 5 hours when light came on saying passenger airbag off. Stopped for gas, turned car off and back to normal for only 5 minutes. Now light is on as if no passenger in seat when in fact there is an adult there.

15 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2017

Passenger airbag will sometimes deactivate while a passenger is seated in it. I feel very unsafe driving with a deactivated passenger airbag. This happens seemingly at random, but while driving. It has occurred many times. It can be resolved by pulling over and restarting the car usually.

16 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2016

My fiancé sat in the driver seat, I in the passenger seat. We started the car after we both were sitting down. I had his phone charging in the center console and my phone was in the house. My srs light came on and the pass. Air bag was turned off. Codes b1660, b16fo, and b1650 were saved. When I brought it to the dealership they told me a wet passenger, a cell phone in a pocket, or even a lap top that was turned off in a bag could cause the occupant classification system to malfunction due to it being static electric based due to the seat heaters. I had a seat recall completed in Nov 2015 and the dealership refuses to state that this could be related to the recall. Service campaign wqt55 NHTSA campaign 15v419000. It is unacceptable to think that having a cell phone while a passenger in a safety rated car could cause a malfunction in the air bag system.

17 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2016

Subaru had a recall on the odc (occupant detection system) NHTSA 15v419000 for cars produced from 4/2011 through 2/2012. My car was produced in mid March 2012 - and experienced the exact same problem as the recalled vehicles. The odc would be deactivated if a passenger was in the car and we had a charger plugged in the power outlet. This is a serious issue. It is being fixed, but it is a $1,200 charge, for what I believe should be part of the recall. Thanks for your time and help.

18 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2015

This vehicle is currently under recall for a defective front passenger airbag system. I have been told that all the parts to fix the problem are, "on back order". I explained that I am uncomfortable driving the car with this problem, since the recall clearly states that the airbag may not inflate upon collision. I asked for a loaner car until the problem was fixed and was told, "there is nothing we can do, you can contact Subaru of America". I have been given no time estimate as to when the parts will be available.

19 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2015

Today (October 9, 2015), I received an email from [xxx], warranty administrator, team Mazda Subaru, in caldwell, idaho 208-455-0322 [xxx], telling me that the part to fix Subaru recall campaign wqt-55, NHTSA recall no. 15v-419, August 2015 for my 2012 Subaru Impreza, [xxx] was going to be returned if I did not bring my vehicle in shortly. Soon after I received the safety recall notice in the mail, I called team Mazda Subaru service department to schedule an appointment, telling them exactly what the appointment was for. An appointment was made for 2 pm on September 1, 2015. I arrived at the service center and gave the adviser a copy of the recall notice at 1:50 pm on September 1, 2015. He told me that it would be an hour or more wait. I showed him in the letter that it should take no more than 25 minutes. The adviser seemed to be completely unaware or informed of the recall, but said that he would have it done sooner than previously mentioned. At 2:50 pm I left the dealership with the recall defect not repaired because the part needed was not available. He asked if I wanted him to call me when the part arrived and I said, ?please!? today, more than one month later, I get the email described above. The recall notice states that I should contact you immediately if I believe the Subaru retailer has failed or is unable to remedy my vehicle within a reasonable amount of time. I do not consider more than one month a reasonable amount of time. The recall notice also says that I should immediately contact the dealer to make an appointment, which implies that the part is available. I do not understand why an appointment would be made to repair my car if the part was not in stock. Furthermore, why did I have to wait an hour to find out the repair could not be accomplished? sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

20 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2015

I received recall information and made an appointment with a local dealer for correction of the defective automotive part. Weeks later I received a phone call from the dealer that they had run out of parts and would reschedule by calling me when the defective part was back in stock. I then received an email, dated 9/9/2015, from the dealer bill rapp Subaru, syracuse, NY, that the appointment had been cancelled but no indication regarding the recall or in writing the they would call me when the part was back in stock. Please advise.

21 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2015

Passenger airbag turns off with adult in passenger seat weighing 260 lbs.

22 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2015

My front passenger seat doesn't register the passenger and disables the airbag.

23 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2015

While driving on the highway at about 65 mph, the alerts indicating the front passenger airbag system was off lit up on the dashboard and central console in our 2012 Subaru Impreza. My husband was in the passenger seat, and we had been driving continuously for over an hour already when this happened. When we left to return home later that day, the alerts were off when I turned the car on. However, after about an hour and a half of driving on the highway with my husband in the passenger seat, the alerts indicating the front passenger airbag system was off lit up again.

24 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2014

To whom it may concern: I have a 2012 Subaru Impreza prez, and am concerned that my airbag may fail on impact. When will the recall make it to the dealerships so they may be able to service my, my family members and friends cars to make them safe with fear-free driving! the country would appreciate your departments response to our valid concern for safety, as I'm sure all of the humans working in this department are concerned for themselves, their families and friends. Thank you for your valuable time and effort to remedy this most important concern the united states population has.

25 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2014

At any speed, while carrying a passenger, the passenger airbag on light will turn to the off position. Passenger airbag is disabled while passenger is in vehicle at any given speed randomly. Could potentially cause severe injury/death in an accident. I have owned multiple 2012+ Imprezas with this exact issue.

26 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2014

Vehicle passenger airbag disabled light illuminates when a cellular device is placed in the proximity of the passenger seatbelt buckle. Also a cellular device placed on the seat with no occupant engages the OCS to register that someone is sitting in the seat. Spoke with Subaru dealer regarding the issue, and was told everything is ok, and there is no fix for the complaint.

27 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

Please read this:. . Read more...

28 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

I sideswiped a parked car and the momentum caused my car to flip over and land on its roof. Have not heard from the adjuster but it is obvious the car is "totaled". Writing to you to let you know that I also wrote to Subaru to advise them that I think that the airbags should have deployed but none of them did. The accident occurred in union, n. J.

29 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2013

Passenger airbag randomly turns off when passenger is in the car. Took to a dealer and they couldn't repeat. Was told it was probably just a weight issue. If the airbag doesn't go off with a passenger there it could be fatal.

30 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2012

The first time this happened, I was driving along a suburban road with a passenger. The passenger airbag was on for the first ~20 minutes of the trip, then randomly turned off. I pulled over, turned off the car, then turned it back on. The passenger airbag went on again, but then went back off after a few minutes of driving. This airbag issue has happened sporadically since then, both on highways and city/suburban roads, and after 15 minutes-2 hours of driving. All passengers have been over 130 pounds and have been sitting up straight.

31 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2012

My Subaru is equipped with a passenger airbag monitor. When someone is sitting in the passenger seat, the light should indicate the airbag is on. When a passenger is sitting in the front seat of my Impreza, the airbag consistently turns off. I called Subaru the first time it happened. They told me there was a recall. When I took it into the dealership to be fixed, they said there was no recall and they could not duplicate the problem. I took it in a second time with the same response. I am now out of warranty and the passenger airbag turns off about 75% of the time someone is sitting in the seat.

32 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Finally, after 3 years of Subaru stonewalling to admitting to a problem with the passenger airbag, NHTSA intervention resulted in recall wqt55. I received the recall notice earlier this week. However, none of the Subaru dealers in the san francisco bay area that I contacted had the necessary replacement part and said it back ordered with no estimated delivery date available. I believe Subaru has consistently acted in bad faith since the problem was brought to their attention and is continuing to do so. I strongly encourage the NHTSA to fine Subaru the maximum amount for delaying and now misleading vehicle owners on a recall that misrepresents their ability to fix the problem since the replacement part is unavailable. Subaru is knowingly acting in bad faith. I have been enduring this safety issue for more than three years by avoiding using the passenger seat whenever feasible. It's not right that Subaru continues to get away with their behavior. Please take action. Thank you.

33 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

The contact owns a 2012 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that the air big light sporadically illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 3,000.

34 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2012

The passanger airbag is in off position with person sitting in seat. Happens occasionally. Dealership claims that "it shows no eros when the test it".

35 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2012

The airbags in this vehicle turn off while driving (driver and passenger side dashboard icons indicate airbags are turned off). Vehicle must be stopped and restarted for the airbags to turn back on. There seems to be a relationship to electronic interference - passenger use of iphone or ipad may be involved - but it has happened with no passenger as well. This happened 5 times in one day recently while driving at high altitude (pikes peak, CO). Probably related: the seat belt alarm has gone off when iphone is placed on empty passenger seat while driving.
