Subaru Impreza owners have reported 40 problems related to wheel (under the wheel category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Impreza based on all problems reported for the Impreza.
Two lug studs broke on opposite wheels from torque issues caused when rotating tires. Based on speaking with both the dealer and the tire shop, they said this is a common issue with Subaru's. Fortunately this happened while the tires were being replaced and not while driving. Had 2 of the lug studs broken on the same tire and I had not been aware, this could cause safety issues for both myself and other drivers.

Since new, maybe once a month, cruise control idiot light comes on and flashes until car is turned off. Usually no bother but one day it started braking without me and I bought the dumb base model!!! before extended warranty expires, this August, hopefully dealer will replace wheel speed sensors on rear wheels. Not sure if this will fix problem. I have asked them to check this six or seven times now. They tell me warranty may not cover it unless code is stored? hopefully they will stand behind product and fix it anyway. 2017 Impreza with 33000 miles and have done all recalls and maintenance!.

My 2015 Impreza has had its rear wheel bearings fail twice now, and now there’s still a loud noise coming from the end of my vehicle. My most recent trip to the dealer to get a bearing replaced costed me nearly $800. The kicker is, I just rolled over 65,000 on my car. There’s no reason I should be flying through bearings this fast, and have what seems like a never ending rear-end noise that seems to only be getting louder.

The rear wheel bearing hubs continuously have to be replaced due to failure. I have 110,000 miles and have replaced the same rear wheel bearing 3x since buying the vehicle new. The 1st occured withing the first 30,000 miles.
I brought my car into my family mechanic to get an inspection after I noticed severe shaking when breaking and a burnt rubber smell. They determined the left front caliper was hanging and needed to be replaced- the caliper is covered under my warranty, so I brought my car into the dealership - service department at dealership was unable to detect the issue for weeks until I gave them detailed instructions on how to find the issue, once they agreed the caliper needed to be replaced, the part was backordered until late August - I got my car back after they changed the caliper and the issue is still happening after long drives- dealership is still unalbe to detect the issue - I am being told after market brakes are the issue.

The hubcaps that were manufactured with the car and given with the car have repeatedly fallen off while driving. This is a hazard because it has almost hit other cars while driving. In the 5 years I have had this car I’ve had to replace 6 hub caps that have fallen off. When I got my tires replaced this year I was also told by the tire center that they constantly see this issue with Subarus and that the hub caps for this car frequently fall off because of the design. I have tried to tell Subaru about this issue but they don’t care. I have friends who also have Subarus who have the same issue and whenever I’m driving around I can see other Subarus missing their hubcaps so I know I’m not the only one having this issue. The approximate date I’ll enter is the most recent but this dates back to 2020.

The wheel system has some kind of squealing in it.
On or about July 17, 2020, I was traveling on an interstate at approximately 63 mph when I experienced a sudden loss of air pressure in right front tire. There was no warning and nothing on my dash indicated that pressure was low at any tire prior to the incident. I almost lost control of the vehicle, but was able to regain control of the vehicle and get to the breakdown lane. The tire lost all air pressure and the rim hit the pavement destroying the rim. The tire and rim were replaced by the dealer that day. The tire was a continental procontact TX 205/55r16 89v. Dot a3t2 wc39 2919.
The car is less then 2 years old and it has a problem braking, it makes a rubbing noise everting time it turns while braking, at higher speeds it vibrates, and also has problem shifting dealership said they had no problems with the car.
I drive approx. 145 miles a day for work; normal highway driving. I bought my car 2. 5 years ago and have just over 96,000 miles on it. In this time span I've had to replace two wheel bearings; 40,000 miles and 96,000 miles. This seems to me to be a high rate of wear on a fairly critical part.
Leased from bizzaros the car was inspected with a broken seat belt there's recalls the car keeps eating bearings and hubs the car is simply not safe and bizzaros told me nothingness is wrong with it the power train brakes and rotors and tires were filled to 69psi when got it.

Takata recall and safety recall wue90 NHTSA campaign: 19v149000 brake lamp switch. On April 4th, 2019 I called multiple dealers for this recall and the takata recall and they could not get me in until may 11th for airbag and the brake recall they do not have parts yet for it and the cars brake light is on. The last week and a half the brakes have been goofy and light illuminated which is part of the recall. Monday while driving on the highway at 55mph the rear passenger tire blew. Car has been towed because it appears part of the abs system has broke and pierced the brand new tire!.

I was driving on a decline at 10 to 15 miles per hour on a snowy evening and when I tried to break, my breaks locked up and I had absolutely no control of my automobile except for steering and made the choice to go towards the guard rail to slow my automobile down since I had no brakes. I bought my automobile 16 months ago and have had difficulties with tire lights coming on and many other issues and I do not feel safe driving this automobile.

Wheel bearing assembly failed rendering the vehicle unsafe for highway operation. When attempting the (Subaru) recommended repair the oem part was no longer available by substituted by an alternative part for this critical repair. We have retained the original part for inspection.
On March 22, 2018, my 2017 Subaru Impreza sport wagon, with approximately 10,000 miles experienced a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension components traveling at 8 miles per hour. I was proceeding through a green light making a right. 3/4 of the way thru the turn I felt a violent jarring of my car on the left side and the driver's side curtain airbag slammed the left side of my upper body neck and head. I saw that my direction of travel did not change I started to pull off to the side of the road and apply the brakes. Had no brakes. A woman pulled over and she said " no one hit you, your wheel just fell off. " police came and helped me out of my car and completed an accident report. We noticed 1/2 of my wheel was in the intersection and a police officer recovered it for me. Mitchell Subaru inspected the vehicle submitted a claim with Subaru of America (soa) stating catastrophic failure of the rear suspension components. Soa then conducted their own investigation of the incident. The soa representatives wrongly concluded that I was involved in a high speed, rear collision with another vehicle. They did not examine or remove any suspension components for further testing. Soa conclusions are completely inaccurate. The police officer is adamant that there was no other vehicle involved. Eyewitness on the scene stated that she watched the event unfold and that my wheel fell off. The adjuster from my insurance company concluded that a massive failure of the right rear wheel / suspension caused the accident, no other vehicle was involved. A factory trained Subaru technician with 20 years of experience stated that there was no damage that pointed to a collision and that the scuff marks noted by soa where caused by the rear tire slamming into the panel. Soa denies all responsibility for this devastating failure of their product.
There was a large potholes on the entrance into freeway 280 on geneva avenue, the spot was located at the merging line point. When I was driving on 19jan18, my vehicle ran directly through this potholes, and there was a huge sound from my right front wheel hitting the edge of the potholes. After I stopped my vehicle, I found out the tie that hit the hole was damage, and it will be really having a tire burst on the road if I keep driving like this. I will upload the picture of my damaged tie, that is the reason I file this complaint. Please compensate my lost because there was not my mistake. Thank you so much.
Every time it rains or is wet outside my air bag light comes on and acts as if I dont have a passenger next to me, but I do. They are sitting with seat belt on in passenger seat. But the lights on my dash say otherwise. This issue only happens when its wet out. And it shows the light on dash when im driving, not when I first start the car.
In 2014 tire pressure monitoring system light started blinking then remained illuminated. Now 2016 same problem now told one of the tire pressure monitoring system sensors is again defective but not under warranty.
Having trouble ignition turning over I have taken back to dealer several times always told my car was fine this car has recalls I wasn't aware I had to replace tire & sensor wasn't working was told it was climate related when I brought it in. . . . . . This is my second Subaru . . I'm very disappointed w this car. . . . . Now my abs, check engine, an tire gauges are blinking when I was parking I just took it to dealer a week ago. . . . I was told everything was fine.
Tire pressure light system of my vehicle is definitely defective. Dealership acknowledged defect & "reset" tire pressure sensor after I got involved in an accident on the freeway from my tire exploding from a lack of tire pressure & failure of light showing on my dashboard. After the accident, a 3rd party tire shop then properly inflated air pressure to all 4 tires which then caused the air pressure light to appear on the dash. . . This reveals that the tire pressure alert system is working in the opposite way that it is supposed to. In my case; when the tire pressure was low; I would not get an alert (this is when it should alert); but when my tire pressure was inflated to standards, the light would alert on the dash (error). This caused me to get into a car accident on the freeway and is a danger to many drivers driving & around the drivers of other affected Subarus. The 3rd party tire shop tried resetting the defected tire sensor; & was not able to reset the sensor that was not working. Subaru was able to reset the sensor. Why was Subaru able to reset, but the 3rd party could not?-possible red flag. The dealership did not order me a new tire sensor. They just "reset" the sensor when another tire company was not able to. Reset or not; the fact of the matter is that; the dealership acknowledged that the sensor was defected (or else they would not have had a need to "reset" it & give me a free maintenance service) and knows about the accident it caused me as a result. Because we know the tire sensor is defected (or else the dealership would not have had to "reset" the sensor); what's to say that it will not defect again? what is to say that they illegally just turned off the sensor light to cover up the problem when the tire sensor is still defective? why did they reinstall an acknowledged defected tire sensor as opposed to ordering me a new tire sensor?investigate pls.
Rear wheel bearings had to be replaced at 60k miles. Began noticing the noise from the failing bearings around 50k miles. Upon replacement, the bearing races were visually inspected and found to have major pitting on both the inner and outer races.

The rear wheel bearings emit a low pitch noise that increases in amplitude with speed. The noise has been getting progressively worse, to the point where at highway speeds, it is difficult to hold a conversation with anyone sitting in the back seat. I am told there is a wheel bearing recall for a different model Subaru of this same model year, but the Subaru dealership says it does not include my VIN. They estimate the repair at $850.

There is a problem with the suspension system on the Subaru Impreza. The inside of the tires will wear out prematurely and the outside of the tire will have plenty of tread on it. If the owner does not check the whole tire they will miss it and could result in a blown tire. Have heard of many Impreza owners having this problem. Talked to a service manager and they indicated that they have seen this problem also. It needs looked at before somebody get hurt or killed.
Warning light flashes for 30 seconds then stay on. Checked tire pressure. All were good.
Car unexpectedly accelerated in a remote area of a parking lot in a mall. Went over a curb, crossed a grassy area and struck a tree. Driver indicates that brakes were applied to no avail. Rear driving wheels were depressed into the ground after the car was stopped by the tree, indicating the possibility that the car was still accelerating after it was stopped by the tree.
In a crime ridden neighborhood I had a flat tire which I was unable to change. This was due to my Subaru labeled and packaged "mcgard" wheel key which cracked and became unusable. Tire sales and repair facility summoned for assistance reports they have a "bucket" full of this brand of wheel lock "keys" which cracked and became unusable. After my first mcgard wheel lock key cracked, mcgard sent me a free wheel lock "key" and said the original cracked, because someone used excessive air-wrench torque to remove lug nuts. I believe this to be untrue, because to eliminate this possibility, I personally attempted to remove the four keyed wheel locks (with my brand new wheel lock key) prior to a tire rotation at a tire sales facility. The brand new wheel lock key cracked again (after the third mcgard lug), simply by me trying to remove the keyed lugs. It should be noted Subaru lug nut torque had been approximately 62' lbs. , and it is now approximately 85' lbs. Please also see my other NHTSA complaint regarding the unusable Subaru supplied lug wrench. I believe this affects 2013 models, and very possibly model years prior to 2012.
Unable to change flat tire. The wheel-nut or lug-nut torque required by Subaru is 89ft lbs. This torque was the torque on my wheel-nuts, as verified twice by a new-tire sales facility. With Subaru's 11 1/2" wrench, most women and many men (myself included) cannot loosen these nuts. My weightlifting neighbor could not believe he could not loosen the lug-nuts with the supplied wrench. They are that tight! the owner's manual cautions not to stand on the wrench. This condition can leave someone stranded, perhaps in a dangerous area, or under dangerous conditions. Subaru should verify this problem, by having individuals try to loosen the nuts. Anyone with this vehicle (do other models also have this condition?) is advised to figure a way to remove these nuts before an emergency occurs.
Driving. Hit a bump as I was attempting to take an exit and hit a pot hole which bent my rims and depleted the air in the tires.

The rear wheel bearings on my car had to be replaced after less than 50k miles. This is not typical wear and tear, the part was defective. The car was outside the manufactures warranty period so I had to pay for the defective part repairs myself.
Ordered & purchased car 2012 began sending complaints to dealer & manufacture about the vehicle wandering over the road, brakes grabbing, tires losing air, poor transmission response, bad battery and many more. After my complaints were neglected I had to save the money to replace faulty factory yokohama avid tires @ 24k miles & purchased warrantee direct extended warranty to address complications (like starter) this car has well under 40k miles now but have had to replace the battery & the car will not stay aligned. This car always uses coolant & brake fluid, as well as a strange engine oil situation (presently different than the class action oil consumption problem). I have complained about the non-responsive transmission & poor acceleration. I'm already disabled from job-related spinal injuries & have done my darnedest to drive as safely as possible to avoid driving during rush traffic, check tire pressures & oil use so I keep my perfect driving record for insurance & health purpose. I thought that buying a new car keeps one from many purchases yet, I have spent more money on this new car than any used car. What more can I do to protect myself? with all the problems I'd like to know which files are best to send?.
1. The weakness (dimness) of the low beams is a dangerous situation. The assemblies are not dirty or oxidized; the low beam height was properly adjusted; tested the power going to each light and it showed 14 volts; bought some high power led bulbs which didn't help. I am very hesitant to spend up to $400 for new assemblies hoping that maybe it will fix the problem. I have adjusted the high beam level to the height of what the low beams were and now have to use the high beams as low beams to sufficiently see the road and now have no high beams if I need them. Subaru should be recalling and replacing these faulty assemblies immediately. 2. Wheel lugs shear off when being removed. When the lug nuts were put on, they were tightened with a torque wrench to manufacturer specifications. This is the only vehicle (out of the 13 I have owned) I have ever had this problem with. Subaru should be recalling and replacing lugs immediately with lugs of proper materials immediately.
I had to replace the right rear wheel bearing in September of 2009 with 63,455 miles, then in February, 2012 at 99,985 miles I had to replace the left rear wheel bearing, and again on July 7, 2014, I have had to replace the right rear wheel bearing again at 118,903 miles. This seems to be a rather excessive failure of Subaru's design, since I have never experienced nor to I know anyone who has experienced any type of re-occurring failures with wheel bearings on other vehicles. My husband is a retired mechanic, who after working on all types of vehicles for over 40 years, has never encountered such problems. Surely Subaru should be held accountable to it's customers to correct their problems with a re-call to modify their poor design, without making their customers continually pay for their mistakes, before someone looses a wheel, causing a major accident resulting in loss of life and property. This should not be a normal occurrence for all-wheel drive vehicles.
With my alloy wheels on two of my Subaru cars, the snow gets lodged in the break pads\rotors and it takes pumping the breaks to force the snow out before the breaks will engage. Subaru denies it is a problem. This happens every winter on both cars, but I have learned to be extra cautious coming to a stop in already wintry conditions. This year my breaks did not engage, went through a stop into a busy intersection, luckily no oncoming traffic.

Takata inflators. . . Not sure I am in the right place but we live in missouri and bought a car in tennesse and it will not pass inspection in missouri. So had a mechanical shop start fixing it and the more he got involved the more was wrong with it. Right now it will cost us over 5000 to fix and we bought it for 7000. The shop refuses to do anything about it and says it is not its responsibility. We have pictures of parts that were put on wrong which damaged other parts. They said they bought it an auction and it was not their fault. Sorry if I am in the wrong place if I am could you please send me who I should contact. There other things wrong but could only check 3 items. Thank you.
