I took my Subaru Legacy to the little rock arkansas Subaru dealership to service a recall on my fuel tank. While there the service manager refused to replace parts listed on the TSB. When I contacted Subaru they stated a new TSB was issued the day before my recall was completed not requiring those steps, that the updated TSB would not be public, would not provide any information about the new TSB and that they were closing my complaint.

Driving on interstate at 70mph & car acted as if it went into neutral. Rpm's were maintained at apx 4000. Low fuel light had just gone moments before indicating 80 miles left in tank. Car acted like it had no gas however rpm was working as I pulled on to shoulder of highway, luckily. Once pulled over & braking engine stopped. Tried restarting & engine acted like it had no gas. Was in the process of waiting for aaa when I tried restarting it. It started after about a half hour from incident, although I did not try to start it after the 1st 5 minutes or so. When it restarted low fuel gauge was still on 70 miles to empty & I was able to make it to gas station & refueled to approximately 15 gallons, 3 less than 18 gallon tank so there was approx 3 gallons in tank when this occurred. Car is working fine now but will be taking to nc Subaru to see if any codes were set, nothing was alerted on car warning lights other than low fuel warning light. I live in NJ & I am concerned this could happen again driving back & I may not be so lucky to be able to pull over on more congested highways. Searched google & there are similar incidents such as Subaru forrestor 2014 with same engine & issue where dealer could not find issue. Also Subaru issued recall for 2017 imprezza (see 33k cars recalled) with stalling issues. Car has 93k miles & other than replacing 2 batteries, one a few weeks back , it has never had an issue with anything else. I was approximately 2 miles from getting off interstates when this occurred (eg 553 of 550 miles before 30 or so miles remaining on local roads). After refueling in NJ only made two quick 5 minute stops along the way before this occurred.

After filing tank I took a drive. . . Drove abt 30 miles to do some shopping then abt 2 hours later I drove the 30 miles back home with the fuel guage not moving. . . . After several hours at home getting ready to go out for the evening I got into car. . Pressed the button and started car. . . Notice that the fuel guage was at 3/4. . . . When I parked it was above full. . . This happened several times during the month of June 2018 (purchased car new on may 26 2018) contacted dealership on July 3, 2018. . . They received it on July 7, 2018. . . . After being at the dealer for 11 weeks the car was returned to me with a new cluster (dealer was aware the a recall was in the works for a premature empty tank when low fuel light cane on). . Received car back on September 21, 2018 and on September 22, 2018 I once again experienced the same issue. . . . Drove home from dealership 21st went to work morning 22nd came home and got ready to go out. . . Got into car with again a full tank when parked and now upon ignition it was a bit over 7/8 lower. . . The dte is and has been all over the place. . . . Dealership had never driven car so that was recently done. . . . New sensors put in. . . . Took off from dealership 4-3-2019 with full tank. . . Drove abt 49 miles and decided to top off tank to test miles/fuel consumption. . . Now the guage remain in the same position as prior to adding fuel. . . Also in the same 49 miles the dte dropped from 610 to 460. . . . When I received vehicle back in September is when I started image documenting. . . . Without an accurate fuel guage it is impossible to feel safe on the road. . . . Subaru and dealership are aware of this issue with no solution. . .

After sitting in driveway for 3 days, vehicle would barely start, strong exhaust smell, rat nest on top of engine and chewed hoses and wiring. Had towed into dealership. Advised of rodent damage. Replaced: engine wiring harness, transmission harness, transmission insulation, firewall insulation, hood insulation, fuel transfer pipes, and fuel lines at engine bay. Cleaned excess debris from engine bay and fuel bay (they had to drop the fuel tank). Reassembled. Final cost, including tow charge: $4557. 42. Thankfully, insurance covered, minus our $1000. 00 deductible. Green cars, not green in the wallet.
Fuel leaking from top of gas tank. No collison. Gas smell began as check engine light lit and cruise control light started slow blink. Smell has gradually grown stronger. Smell strongest on the passenger side. Smell sometimes enters car interior.

After my dad filled his Legacy with fuel we could smell fumes from the fuel. We took it to the Subaru dealership we bought it from for them to overlook the fuel system to see where the leak was coming from. After it was looked over by the mechanic, we were told that the gas tank itself is leaking and will need to be replaced. We are not made of money, so we contacted Subaru of America and asked for them to help us with the cost. They contacted our service advisor and the next day told my dad they could not help. To us this is a serious safety issue and can not figure out why Subaru wouldn't want to help when it concerns customer safety. I know that Ford is recalling their fuel tanks for this issue, and cannot see why Subaru isn't doing the same. Between the leaking fuel tank and waiting over a month for the air bag recall, we do not feel safe driving this car. Hopefully we will be able to get this fixed and the car will become safe to drive again.
1997 Subaru Legacy gt 2. 5l engine, approx. 92k miles, engine started overheating. Car was taken to two different repair facilities and diagnosed as blown head gasket after pressure test, block test, no signs of leaking. Car had been serviced faithfully by original owner at Subaru dealerships since purchse. I found out this is a common problem from repair facilities with this model and engine but when questioned Subaru dealership they said it couldn't have happened as head gasket and cooling system are not related (?) and problem was a cracked block or cylinder. Estimated cost to replace head gasket $2450-. Estimated cost to replace engine $5700-. I had also had a problem where the fuel filler tube that connects to the gas tank from where you pur the gasoline in from the pump had rusted away and leaked fuel onto the ground. I had that replaced at approx. Cost of $400-. Again Subaru denied there was a problem when I called the dealership. These problems occurred with in six months of each other.

Almost every time I fill up with gas, when the gas pump shuts off there is a back splash of gas out of the tank. I would say anywhere from 1 to 3 ounces of gas splashes out. Depends on the pressure it's being filled at. I talked to my dealer about it and was told that is common for Subaru Legacy's.
I bought my youngest son a 1992 Subaru Legacy station wagon. I went to fill the gas tank and when I got home you could smell gas fumes very strongly and later we could see where it had leaked onto the ground. I asked my oldest son about it since he is a certified mechanic and he was telling me about a recall on that year because of how the company put in the back seat. I contacted my local Subaru dealer (kelly Cadillac) and they said it was not that year or VIN number and that they could not help me. They acted like if it was not a new vehicle then it did not matter. This is my son's only way to college every day but it worries me whether this car is safe or not.
