36 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2019

When I change gears from p( parking) in to d(drive) it take around 2 seconds to start the car driving I think that is bad for transmission, another problem is with taching screen it doesn't work properly many times especially when I'm driving in r(rearverse) and the gear lights in dashboard do not turn on . Thanks.

37 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2018

We were driving our 2015 Subaru Outback at about 55mph on us20, the temperature was in the mid 30's, in east oregon when our sunroof spontaneously exploded. There were no other vehicles around and there was no impact from foreign objects. There was a loud, distracting, bang followed by a cloud of shattered glass coming from the back of the car. The sunroof cover was closed and the tempered glass fragments collected in the well and rattled around for the remaining 3 1/2 hours of our journey.

38 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2018

Exhaust system issue. Exhaust mainfold leak at catalyst converter. For our Outback we noticed a significant levels of exhaust fumes in passenger cabin. They were no indication of failure of exhaust system or catalyst converter on the car. But we are getting some much fumes smell when we stopped at the traffic signal or parking lot. It all most made us sick. Luckily I got it checked at the service center and they find the leak. This is potentially a very risky thing for people who don't notice the smell might get slow poisoned with carbon monoxide or other elements in exhaust fumes. There may be direct injury from this issue but as I said I was almost got sick because of fumes. For people with pzev vehicle, the exhaust system is covered under warranty. Please bring this issue with manufacturing. For people out there if you notice a loud exhaust note at start of your vehicle or small rattling noise when we you accelerate after a complete stop, it might be your exhaust system, please get it checked as soon as possible. Ps attached is the diagnosis report from dealer service center be safe out there !! thank you.

39 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2018

The pipes that connect to manifold to muffler need to be replaced after 50,000 miles. Subaru said this is not covered under warrant, because it is not the manifold.

40 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

Please read upload documents. My 2015 Subaru Outback began showing signs of excessive oil consumption in the summer 2018. Apparently this was a known problem with Subaru and class action lawsuit was filed against Subaru for models made prior to 2015. My vehicle failed a oil consumption test in the fall of 2018. I was told by white bear Subaru if the vehicle failed an oil consumption test Subaru of America would pay to have a new short block installed due to this ongoing engine defect. However, Subaru of America refused to pay the full amount to have a new short block installed as even though my car was make in 2014 it is technically a 2015 that the class action lawsuit only protected consumers of models prior to 2015. Also, in the fall of 2018 the interior of this vehicle began to have a exhaust smell and was making me feel sick. They determined that part of the exhaust system was broken but told me not to have it fixed before the new short block was installed and the exhaust system would just become clogged with the oil the car was burning. I went ahead had had the repair done anyway as the exhaust air was terrible.

41 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2018

While parking the car at an open parking lot in shopping center at low speed (<5mph) the engine surged suddenly and the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably. It required tremendous pressure on brake to eventually override the engine.

42 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2018

I was on a major highway coming to stop for a traffic light. All of a sudden the car accelerated. I pressed harder on the brake but it wouldn't stop. Finally I put the car in neutral and tapped on the gas pedal and the engine tuned down. I purchased the car used in 2017 from Honda north. In butler PA. After about 6 months the incident happened. This has been going on since then and has only gotten worse. This past month it has been happening at least twice a week. Lrecently I almost a small child and his mom pulling out of a parking spot. I have grand children that I take with me daily and I am scared what will happen if they are in the car with me when this happens. Does someone have to die before you pays attention to this on going problem. I expect to hear from someone soon before this car accelerates and kills someone.

43 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2018

The sunroof on the vehicle exploded randomly. Causing glass to go everywhere all over the car while on the freeway.

44 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2017

Pulling into a parking space, stopping when vehicle accelerated at high speed jumped curb an hit a tree, happened in a couple seconds. ## VIN passed ## Subaru Outback 2015 ##.

45 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2017

Unexpected acceleration after parking, jump curb into tree, causing $7,000 in damage. Air bags did not deploy, both myself and passenger hit knees on dash, even with our seat belts still on. Had other computer issues earlier that day, back up sensors didn't work while backing car right behind mine. Car has now been at Subaru for a month, waiting for engineers results after their inspection 2/14/2018.

46 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2017

This concerns a 2015 Subaru Outback limited 6 cylinder. At approx 21,000 mi I was slowing to speed to park in a public parking space on a city street and the Outback sudden acceleration. The Outback hit a city metal post/sign, jumped the curb and collided with a building and damaging a store front with great force. The airbags did not deploy and the automatic collision prevention failed to work. Once before the car had an acceleration surge while driving a public city street at low speed but did not hit anything. Prior to the accident I've also experienced slight hesitation in acceleration when I first accelerate from a stationary position and probably unrelated, the gear shift often gets stuck in park and I have to use force the gear shift to reverse. Having trouble with turning neck from side to side and need to see doctor for evaluation so, not sure if this is considered injury?.

47 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2017

Voice activated navigation system. The voice activated navigation system is extremely unreliable. This could lead to an accident while driving. I.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2017

I have an intermittent issue with sliding the driver's window, it goes up and rapidly goes down, it looks like it doesn't fit to the upper frame, it is especially inconvenient while raining. That problem appears while driving or parking.

49 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2017

Right rear passger window blew out and shattered while driving down highway.

50 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2017

While driving on highway with the sunroof closed, the sunroof glass shattered sending most of the glass out of the car, but some landed on the driver, passenger, and center armrest. There were no other vehicles within a mile of it. We were wearing sunglasses which protected our eyes. The cause was and still remains unknown.

51 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

Srvd system keeping getting disabled from no reason, randomly.

52 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2016

Subaru rear vehicle detection (srvd) system has failed after owning car for 16 months. The 2015 Outback has very bad blind spots and presents a very unsafe condition while operating the vehicle in traffic with this system inoperative.

53 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2016

I was forced to replace a 2nd failed wheel bearing (left front wheel) on my 2015 Subaru Outback 4cyl. Limited after 35270 miles today 29july2016. The first failed wheel bearing to be replaced occurred on 15january2016 involving the left rear wheel. In both cases abnormal noise levels while driving from the respective involved corners of the car lead me contact to dealer to confirm suspicions of potential wheel bearing failure in the making. Both bearings were replaced under warrantee conditions and I am for the most part satisfied with the repairs performed. However, having two bearings fail that normally could be expected to last the life of the car leads me to conclude that there is a batch of defective bearings produced for Subaru that may also be found on other cars assembled approximately the same time my car was made in December 2014 at Subaru's indiana assembly plant. I feel this is worth a further investigation by your organization as most consumers probably don't have a clue what a failing wheel bearing sounds like and more likely have no idea how potentially dangerous it is to ignore to warning signs to their detriment. The Subaru dealer to contact regarding my specific car is metric auto sales, inc. , 1767 east jericho turnpike, huntington, NY 11743 (631) 499-6777.

54 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2016

After 2 years of ownership on my brand new Subaru Outback 2015, I have noticed a loud squeaky sound coming from the engine when I start my car after it rained/snowed. The sound would go away after a few minutes, however, it didn't seem normal. I took the car to the dealership to have it checked out. The dealership told me that nothing is wrong and it is perfectly fine. However, the squeaky noise still occurs after rain/snow. It seems to me that water is leaking into a belt when it's not suppose to and it is causing the noise when the engine is started. Subaru needs to look into this issue because this problem only happens after it rains/snows and cannot be replicated when the car is brought to the dealership. Therefore, it is hard to have this issue fixed.

55 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

Lines have appeared across my navigation screen. Lines make the screen almost impossible to read the screen especially in strong light due to the glare. The back up camera view is also impeded by the lines and the glare. The dealer tells me that this is normal as it is part of the touch screen. These lines were not on the screen for the first year I had the vehicle. The dealer will not address the issue even though the car is still under warranty. The lines appear at all times (when the vehicle is moving or stopped).

56 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

Sunroof exlosion. On February 1, 2016 my wife was driving to work at about 8:00 am rush hour and while in the moving line entering the eastward us i69 at the texas hwy 6 south entrance in sugar land texas, at an average speed between 5-10 mpg the sunroof of our 2016 Subaru 3. 6r with 11305 miles exploded and shattered into hundreds of small pieces that collected on the sunlight protective screen. After I talked to my wife and verified that she had received no damage from the incident I called the gillman southwest houston Subaru dealership where we bought the car on may 30 2015 and made a service appointment for the next day. During the service check-in on February 2, 2016 together with the gillman service consultant we looked as thoroughly as it was possible through the glass debris to try to find any foreign object that might have caused the damaged but we did not find anything. I very specifically requested that when the sunroof was taken out of the car for replacement that they perform another search since it would be easier to do the search with the sunroof assembly out on the floor. When the car was repaired and returned the gillman representative confirmed that they had done another search but failed to find any foreign object on the glass debris. Because the dealership did not have a sunroof on stock I left the car on the dealership until February 5, 2016 when the car was returned. During the checkout I was informed that the repairs were not covered under the car warranty because it was assumed that a foreign object had caused the damage and I was charged $666. 34 the December 2017 edition of consumer reports made me realize that this is a potential safety issue that should be reported.

57 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2016

Shortly after purchasing our vehicle, a pebble hit the windshield causing a chip in drivers side. Chip was repaired by our dealership, but was in line of vision. Was excepting this repair, but thought the windshield material was too soft or brittle for this small repair, now have a broken windshield from chip on left side, needs replacing.

58 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2015

I previously wrote to you back in mid-sept. 2021. It was a problem with battery drainage on my Outback and the fact that many other Subaru owners were having the same problem. #[xxx] was the case # that I was assigned. I have never heard from anyone at the NHTSA I don't want to repeat everything that I previously stated. I would appreciate a response as enough time has elapsed. Thank you. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

59 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2015

The power lift tailgate does not open routinely in cold weather. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees fahrenheit, the power lift tailgate may not open or lock properly until the car has achieved a stable interior cabin temperature of 70 degrees fahrenheit or higher. This problem started in October of 2015, not long after the vehicle had eyesight system recall service. The problem is most likely to occur when the vehicle has been not been running or has been parked for several hours during cold weather. I have called and have spoken with at least three different Subaru dealership service departments about the problem and all claim to be unaware of the problem, except in October (2016) one service manager did state he believed a bulletin about the problem could be forthcoming.

60 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2015

On sept. 27th, 2015, the liftgate opened on its own. Many times the lights ,one at a time, over the mirror, will turn on and be hot to the touch when I get into the car after being out of car for hours or over night. The liftgate is a recurring problem,as are the lights. Also, the bluetooth tells me I am calling myself frequently. Electrical problems?? once the liftgate opened while the car was in motion. I have notes on dates & times.

61 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2015

Interior rear view mirror broke off the mounting with glass attached to the mounting. Their was no forceful movement or adjustment being applied to the mirror at the time, it just came down. Distracting my driving.

62 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2015

Navigation system screen has serious glare during daylight hours. Almost drove off road into a ditch yesterday, while trying to see screen. No one else on road. System virtually useless. Also severe glare on driver-side mirror from car interior, makes it hard to see vehicles on left. Subaru could fix this problem with designing a pre-cut anti-glare screen cover or simply replacing the navigation system screen with a new anti-glare plastic one. Someone will eventually get hurt or killed.

63 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2015

I was getting gas at a station. When I was finished pumping gas I entered the car, started it, put it in reverse, braked, put it in drive, it rolled backwards, put on the brake, it continued to roll backwards, gave it some gas since it was still in drive, car jumped forward almost hitting car parked in front of me, my foot was still on brake and in drive while I tried to keep it from rolling backwards. Tried to manipulate brake and gas to stop rolling backwards. Eventually I swerved around parked car in front of me without hitting it. This has happened 4 times since I purchased new car. I went to 2 Subaru dealerships and they said that is normal.

64 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2015

Passenger side blind spot indicator is intermittent (perhaps 50%). It does not always indicate that an object is in it's view when it actually is. If you depend upon this device to make lane changes, you could have a collision. It fails while moving at any speed above about 5-10 mph and weather does not seem to be a factor. I have had it in to the dealer 3 times and he is unable to fix it even after replacing both blind spot sensors. This problem started when the vehicle was brand new and continues to date. The dealer gave me a 2016 loaner model when working on my car and it had the exact same problem.

65 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2015

2015 Subaru Outback 2. 5i limited - Monday 6 July 2015 - while driving, the check engine light, collision prevention off light, line warning off light, and x-mode light messages displayed. I had not disengaged the collision prevention or line warning lights and had not engaged the x-mode feature. There was no message indicating no brake lights. Made appointment for Thursday morning 9 July. Based on service advisor's advice that it was ok to drive the car until I brought it in, I drove the car for two days with no brake lights. (discovered this when my wife followed me to the dealer. ) there should be a message to alert the driver brake lights are not operable. After service appointment Thursday (flashed computer to clear codes), noticed the vehicle was sluggish. While driving at 60 mph Friday afternoon 10 July sluggishness continued to increase, gear shifting became erratic, then the collision prevention off light and line warning off light messages displayed - but no check engine light. Shortly thereafter the vehicle totally failed to maintain speed or accelerate. Coasted off the exit ramp and called for a tow truck. Do not know whether brake lights were operable while this was occurring. I am aware there is a recall wqs-54 on the eye-sight system (which we showed the dealer service advisor). Having no way to know if brake lights are operable is a severe safety hazard. I have not received any notification from Subaru regarding this recall.

66 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2015

Navigation screen reflects sunlight so you can't see important information. Map shows zigzag pattern. Tried changing contrast, didn't help. This is a constant problem when on the highway. Dealership said the new Subaru navigation screen is fine,I don't need a new car!.

67 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2015

We stopped to have lunch and 30 minutes later the car battery as dead or so it seemed as it wouldn't turn over. We had to call highway safety to come and he jumped it off. We got ome an hour later and then we went to our son's house for another hour and when we tried to start it again it was dead. Our son sorta rocked the car from side to side and then it would crank. On our wy home we stopped at the grocery store and got milk and then it was dead again. A man jumped it off again. Next day as we were taking the car to our Subaru dealer it started right up. Still we took it on in to our midland, TX dealer and they could find nothing wrong! we are elderly 87 and 83 and can't take much more of this kind of trouble. (nothing is wrong) we sat 3 hours in the sun on sat as we waited for road side service. Please help.

68 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2015

We recently purchased a new 2015 Subaru 3. 6 r Outback (currently less than 600 miles) and the srvd (blind spot & rear cross traffic detection) system keeps malfunctioning. This happens when the vehicle is started and does not go away when driving. A small yellow " I " icon displays in the instrument cluster but is easy to overlook since there is no audible warning. The system starts working again if the car is stopped, and the engine is turned off and on - until of course the next random failure. This is a case of a "false negative" error, because the the side blind-spot mirrors indicate that the sides are clear to pass, when they may be not. It would have been preferable with a "false positive" error, namely the side blind-spot mirrors indicate that the sides are not clear to pass even if they are! what is truly alarming is that the dealer was not able to replicate the problem codes even after keeping the car overnight for further test drives. Since my family has come to rely on this safety system it is potentially a very serious hazard. I hope Subaru takes this matter seriously and (unlike Toyota) alerts all their customers immediately before it is too late, and comes up with a fix ASAP.

69 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2015

After just picking up my new 2015 Subaru Outback and driving in bright sunlight, I realized there is a hazardous condition related to the car's infotainment center. The area surrounding the display screen is an extremely glossy black mirror-like reflective surface. While driving, the sun reflects off of this surface into the eyes of the driver. This intensity is enough to cause eye pain, as well as distract the driver. Now when driving on a sunny day, rather than keeping both hands on the wheel, I need to use my right hand to shield my eyes from this distracting reflected glare. I attempted to purchase an anti-glare shield, but they only cover the display area (which actually is not reflective). I need to cover the reflective perimeter trim area. Subaru needs to provide an anti-glare shield that covers the entire infotainment center.

70 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2015

4 month old 2015 Subaru Outback: moonroof exploded, from the inside out, while on interstate; weather was clear and about 60degree day around 2:30pm est; nothing hit the car, sunroof exploded, very loudly, up then the shattered glass went everywhere inside the car and over me, as well as over the top of the car, leaving scratches and dents, requiring body shop work to the outside. The cloth cover was open; the driver side window had just been rolled up; had been on the road for about 10mins before it occurred, after having been parked in uncovered parking lot for several hours; was merging onto the interstate; I can supply pictures if needed. Also, this same car has a seal gap issue in the triangular window on the front passenger side window. An initial resealing done weeks after delivery of the car did not stay sealed. Subaru has issued a 'kit' now to fix the seal problem of the triangular window, which I am currently on a wait list for.
