This is a recurring problem with my vehicle. I was driving on the highway, when suddenly my dashboard lights up. I'm going 70 mph, and my emergency brake light is flashing for no reason. It's was not on when I started the car, just suddenly started flashing 5 minutes into my trip. The check engine light also came on. I pulled over as soon as I could and tried reset my e brake. It would not turn off no matter what I did. Once in park on the side of the road, my car would not move. That's when I had to call for roadside assistance to tow my car home. My mechanic used a scanner tool to diagnose the problem, and they described that it was an electrical issue. This has happened previously, about a year beforehand. I was almost home from work when my brake light came on at 50 mph. Turns out the e brake had engaged without it being touched, and the light didn't come on until so much damage had been done. My breaks had completely blown out and had to be replaced. Not only was this a very unexpected and expensive fix, but also put me and others in an extremely dangerous situation. If my beaks suddenly lock on me or go out in the middle of traffic again, somebody could get seriously injured or even killed. Please, I really don't want to go through this again. I need my car to work.

11/21/2020 at oil temp light, brake light, and vehicle dynamics control lights come on while driving after around 30 minutes on a major route (not highway) after already being "fixed" by a dealership. At the end of August I brought the car to the dealer because all 3 lights had come on after I had arrived near my place of work. I had driven for 35 minutes on the highway and cruising local streets for a spot when they came on. When I first got back to my vehicle after work (I had parked and was waiting until end of day to deal with it) and turned on my car - no lights. I was nearly home when all 3 came back on (35 mintues of highway driving). Took to dealer that weekend where they replaced engine air filter, cabin air filter, cvt- valve body and brake light switch for $1934. 97 on 9/21 the lights came back on after driving for around 20 minutes on a 2 lane route. Dealer had the car for 1 week and all they could find / do was change a brake light bulb.

Flashing brake light and ebrake is not engaging. I checked to see if there is a stuck drum brake by jacking up and rotating both rear rotors. Both rotors move freely. I checked online and there was recall on 2012 models but not on mine (2012 Outback, 3. 6 limited. It is driving okay but I am afraid to take it on highways. Last year brake lining thickness on all four tires were 7mm (Subaru dealership) and I only drove a maximum of 10000 miles. Is it possible that other users face the same problem and there is an issue with ebrake system too.

On multiple occasions, while driving on city streets and freeways, without any warning, I have no brakes. No brake light or check engine light (cel) on the dash. The brake pedal went all the way to the firewall. The car eventually stopped without incident; a very stressful and absolutely terrifying moment. Shortly thereafter, brakes are normal. Then, it happens again a couple of weeks later. In total, it has happened seven times. I contacted my local Subaru dealer and explained my concerns. The service writer initially responded that he had never heard of such a problem and didn't know what to do (the condition cannot be recreated; it just happens unexpectedly and without warning). I asked if he would inquire with other service writers to see if they were aware of such an issue. Ironically, another customer's car was there at that very time, with the same complaint/problem being diagnosed. After diagnostics; it was recommended the master cylinder be replaced. I had them replace it with oem part 26401aj001 as well as doing a brake system flush and filling with new brake fluid. This was in November 2019. Since then, the problem has occurred three more times (most recently, two days ago). I recently discovered there was a recall on 2012 Outback master cylinders due to the same problem as described above. Why isn't this recall broader and related to all cars with these identical (same part number) master cylinders? do people have to die before bad brake systems are repaired? I've researched and collectively found numerous others that are having the same issue. I question the credibility of dealership service writers when they say they have never heard of this problem. I have loved my Subaru; however, my vehicle needs to stop when my brakes are applied-every time; not with the fear of; is today going to be the day of failure yet again?.

While traveling straight on i70 , 10 miles east of colby, KS at 75 mph, the electronic parking brake engaged causing the car to slow down and swerve. The brake light on the dash started flashing on the dash along with the check engine light and swerve light. I stopped the car and consulted the manual which indicated not to drive the car. The car had to be towed to a mechanic in colby. The mechanic was unable to fix the problem and the car was towed to denver Subaru dealer, where it is now.
Took it home from dealer and the electronic parking brake would not turn on. The brake light was also blinking. A couple days later, on the way to dealer, I stopped at a gas station and turned on the electric parking brake. It worked this time, but when I got in the car to drive, the electric parking brake wouldn't turn off. I was stuck. There was no way to move it. I was blocking the gas pump for about an hour waiting for a two truck. Tow truck driver had difficulty loading vehicle and taking off vehicle because the parking brake was on and it was an awd meaning none of the wheels can move.
Was driving south on I-5 near orland, CA on 12/26/18 when my Outback began shaking and attempting to "brake" (I was doing between 65 - 70 mph). I looked down and the parking brake signal was illuminated. (I had not engaged the brake. ) I was able to pull to the side of the road. I disengaged the brake and resumed. It happened again. I pulled off the road and called my Subaru dealership, carlsen Subaru, redwood city, CA. I disengaged the brake -- but the brake kept trying to re-engage. I could drive but only have consistently and constantly making sure the brake was not engaged. The brake light would flash on and off periodically. I immediately took the car into the dealership on 12/27/18. As suspected, the dealership diagnosed the problem as the parking brake module. The charge was $185 for diagnosis and another estimated $1,250 for the repair. (see attached diagnostic/estimate) one of the service technicians gave me the national Subaru customer service number -- I called and alerted them. They are investigating. However, later that evening I discovered Subaru has recalled 27,000 2010-2014 Outbacks & legacys with failing parking brakes. The Subaru recall is offering replacement or extended warranty provisions depending on whether the car is manual or automatic transmission (with affected VIN numbers). (recall began in oct 2018. I have received no notification. ) the national Subaru representative made no mention of the current recall to me. I went to the dealership again this morning (12/28/18)--got a copy of the diagnosis/estimate. The service technicians do not see the recall in their system with my VIN number. This appears to be a similar issue to others reported in the recall -- Subaru should look carefully at other vehicles within those same year/model ranges. I feel the car may be dangerous to drive.
Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at 10-15 mph approximately a mile from resident. There was an abnormal burning odor in the vehicle. Additionally, there was smoke emerging from the hood and into the vehicle. The gear shifter was stuck and failed to engage into first gear. The emergency brake warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer muller Subaru 1350 park Ave w, highland park, IL 60035 (888) 285-8152 where diagnosed that the clutch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact declined to pay for the $1800. 00 fee. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number 1-373-484-69104 however no further assistance was provided. The contact stated that NHTSA campaign number 18v626000 (parking brake) was not received. The failure mileage was 83,000. Ap.
Brake warning light flashes about every second or third time you start car. St austin flashing.
Electric parking brake defective. Nothing happens when pushing in the button or pulling. The brake light continues to flash. This feature no longer works, and appears to also effect the hill holder as this no longer works either. Isn't safe to put onto a jack while changing a tire with this function not working as it will roll off the jack.
The green light illuminated and would not unlock . I was driving on a city street and the red brake light came on. After an attempt to release the green light it came off on its ow. The same thing has occurred, both the red and green light are on and not going off.
Tl the contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. While driving 35 to 40 mph and attempting to slow down, the brake pedal became soft and stuck to the floorboard. The contact was able to come to a complete stop by depressing the brake pedal lightly. The contact also mentioned that when attempting to engage the emergency brake, it only emitted a beeping sound and failed to engage. The vehicle was taken to european car sales and service (201 west cloverland drive, ironwood, michigan 49938, (906) 932-5720) where it was diagnosed that the brake lines were rusted and the rear and front brake junctions were corroded. The manufacturer provided the contact with case number 1-35365382991. The manufacturer stated that the brake failure repair ended in March of 2009. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 148,000.
I took my car in for airbag recall, the brake light indicator flashes on/off on dash, intermittent. Service dept could not replicate at first, discovered electronic parking brake component faulty. Parking brake could engage while car is in drive or fail on hill. Charging me 1100 for repair, says its not under warranty or recall. This is same defect/recall on 2015 model Outback. Dealer says no recall for 2013 model outbcak. I dispute this.
The first of 4 incidents occurred on state highway 509 when traveling with my 12 year old granddaughter in the passenger seat. At the speed limit of 60 mph in the right lane, the parking brake applied itself without being touched. The car shuttered violently as it turned to the right heading for the shoulder and slowed the car to 35-40mph before I saw the brake light on the dash and was able to turn off the parking brake switch located on the center console. 2nd time going 35mph on a local street when the same thing happened without warning. 3rd time on the same highway as 1st incident but at 55mph and by myself. 4th time this happened was right after I picked up the car from the shop where they tried to repair the problem and were unable to fix it. I was on the freeway onramp to highway 509 starting to merge on a bridge when for no reason the brake applied itself. Again the dealer shop was unable to repair the car and I picked it up and took it to another Subaru dealer. The paperwork states that the car is not to be driven home or long distances. This Subaru Outback is a very severe safety risk if I keep on driving it.

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while the driver was driving a company vehicle at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to stop while all the warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to fitzgerald Subaru dealership located at 11407 rockville pike, rockville, MD 20852 (301) 230-9000 where it was diagnosed that the right and left side knock sensor and the right brake light needed to replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission body and harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the repair failed to correct the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 73,763. Aw.
The rear 3rd high brake light leaks every time it rains. This happens both when the car is stationary or moving. It has been doing this every time that it rains for about the last 6 months. I have seen numerous complaints on forums for the same problem.
I recently had my Outback towed because my car wouldn't shift out of park. 1st I check the neutral safety switch, good to go no problem. Then move on to my fuses, okay great. Investigate some more to find out the wiring on the Outback has some defaults, I look more into it and it seems it's not just me with the problem. My car is old and carries a lot of miles, keep in mind this car is made for that, but people seem to have the same problem as me with lower miles. The cars liftgate wire harness is a huge weakness on this car. I really hope you guys will look more into this and recall it. I love my suby and have grew up in it and now have the honor of owning it. We still have many more years of driving together so please look into this so I can keep her as long as possible. Temp fix it to remove brake #4 harness and unplug to keep from blowing and smoking. Keep in mind only leaves me with 3 brake lights. (the one unplugged is the one on the hatchback right side) this is very unsafe to not had stable wiring in the brake lights, my car was smoking. I currently do have a 30 fuse in that seems to be able to hold better.

While driving at low speed on local roads the parking brake lights starts flashing, the transmission oil temperature light went on and there was a high pitched squealing sound. We could not get the brake light to go off by pulling the brake release lever. It cleared itself the next day. The dealer couldn't reproduce the problem but found a brake switch failure. There were also 2 software updates that were related to the brake and transmission safety and operation. We were charged for all 3 even though it should have been a safety recall.
My e-brake has not been working for the past year. The red brake light comes on at random times when parked and in motion and I cannot engage the e-brake. Subaru is saying that I need to replace the entire electronic brake mechanism for a cost of $1,000. 00 - this for a 2014 car.

Driving on highway, approximately 55 mph. Brake warning light came on, brakes applied, brake pedal went to floor. Vehicle pulled off road into parking lot. Vehicle towed to Subaru dealer. Vehicle inspected, dealer states rear brake line separated from coupling, due to rust and corrosion. Dealer further states there are no replacement brake lines available anywhere in north America, nor do dealers have any inventory. D3aler is forced to craft brake line to return vehicle to service.
On 3/22/15 while approaching a stop sign the electric parking brake locked on at 10 mph. After pulling off to the side of the road and releasing and applying the parking brake several times it finally released while the check engine and flashing brake light remained on. After shutting the vehicle off for 10 minutes the system reset to normal. The system remained normal until arriving at a Subaru dealer on 3/24/15 when the same problem occurred. The dealer took control, identified and replaced a relay and several sensors. The car performed normal until 4/1/15 when the same problem occurred while traveling 25 mph. After stopping and releasing and applying the parking brake several times the system reset but the check engine, brake and cruise control lights remained steady or flashing. After letting the vehicle set for a period of time the system reset itself. Another appointment has been made at the dealer for 4/6/15. The concern is that if the parking brake locks at high speed or in heavy traffic it could cause a serious accident.
2011 Subaru Outback. Consumer received vehicle repairs and would like reimbursement. The consumer stated the left rear wheel brake had a locked caliper, damaged rotor and a missing brake pad. The consumer stated the brake warning light never illuminated on the dashboard.
I was driving on the freeway when my check engine light, abs brake light, traction control (all wheel drive) light and cruise control lights began flashing all at once. I called the dealership immediately and was told that all the lights flash because most drivers ignore just the check engine light. At the dealer the next day I was told the same thing with the addition of the facts that the abs brake system and the traction control systems were actually disabled during this incident. During the conversation it was said that to correct the problem, a "reflash " of the computer system was needed and that this was a known problem on some Outbacks. I asked why there was no recall if the problem was known and was told they just fixed the problem when it happened. This seems to me to be a significant safety problem since if the problem occurred while the driver was on ice or snow or wet road , vehicle stability would be compromised. I think Subaru should at least be made to recall the suspected vehicles and fix the problem even though it is something that may not happen to all vehicles.
Subaru Outback 2005: the wire harness to the rear tailgate failed and shorted out the brake lights and reverse lights, creating a safety hazard while driving.

This is the second incident where the electric parking brake light indicates the brake has been set & not released. The car was towed into dealership yesterday (5/22/2014) for same reason. Dealer stated they spoke with Subaru & were unable to find any reason for the fault. They stated computer indicated the brakes were not engaged but that this same system does disable the electronic stability control when this fault occurs. We are very concerned the vehicle is safe to drive despite the assurances of the service manager ( alex) that the vehicle is safe (no worries). The instrument light on the panel also flashes "check engine light at the same time light flashes indicating parking brake has been set & not released.
While traveling at 70 mph on I-65 the car suddenly slowed down, the check engine and brake lights began blinking. And as we pulled into the emergency lane the car came to a complete stop, the brakes having seized. The car was started again but could not move. The check engine and brake light kept blinking. After about an hour, the brakes unlocked and the car was able to be towed to the Subaru dealer in nashville. The service dept. Technician performed a diagnostic test. While the test showed that a "braking event" had occurred, there was no indication of a current problem. The technician drove the car 50 miles with a monitor, but everything worked fine. We did not want to drive this car anymore since the problem could not be detected, and bought a new Outback to drive home. Needless to say, if our car had stopped in a middle or left lane of the expressway, with large truck traffic going 70 mph. , a terrible accident most likely would have occurred.
Made a turn and was halfway down the block going approximately 15 mph when the engine suddenly shut off. The instrument gauge lit up with all sorts of annunciators. I was able to pull over to a safe location and park. The following annunciators were flashing; at oil temp, cruise control indicator, and the brake light. The following annunciators were lit solid; check engine warning light /malfunction indicator light and the vehicle dynamics control warning light. Turned off vehicle. Waited. Turned engine on and the annunciators were still present and the instrument gauge remained unchanged.
While driving with cruise control engaged, suddenly the cruise control disengaged, the brake warning light and the abs warning light came on. The required repair was only the forward oxygen sensor, a non-emergency repair. Yet cruise control and abs were disabled, abs being an important safety feature. I was told Subaru has purposely programed the car this way. Not only was I unable to make a decision as to the critical nature of the actual repair but had an important safety feature disabled unnecessarily.
