1 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/06/2023

The contact owns a 2013 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that on two separate occasions while driving at undisclosed speeds, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact stated that after several attempts of applying pressure to the brake pedal, the vehicle stopped. The contact was unsure if any warning lights were illuminated. The contact then stated that on a separate occasion, while driving at an undisclosed speed, she depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle failed to respond. The contact then stated that the after approximately thirty seconds of applying pressure to the brake pedal, the vehicle stopped. Additionally, the cruise control warning light intermittently illuminated, and the contact heard the engine revving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed but no cause for the failure was determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled for the following day. The vehicle had not yet been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.

2 Cruise Control problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/24/2021

Vehicle has had multiple documented incidents of the infotainment system crashing or going dark and being unresponsive. Today during another episode the vehicles adaptive cruise control could not be turned off. The vehicle would not come out of cruise and continued to drive at speed. Placed vehicle in neutral while on the highway to restart the engine and electrical system. The entirety of electrical controls were unresponsive. The infotainment crashing and becoming inoperable are a relatively common experience, but this is the first time we experienced loss of vehicle control.

3 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/07/2021

I was driving straight down the highway going about 50-60 mph and out of nowhere my throttle peddle failed to work. My car immediately slowed down to a crawl and I had to quickly find a safe place to pull over on a road with barely any shoulder. Luckily not many cars were on the road so I did not have to worry about a pile-up accident. The check engine light came on and stayed on while the cruise control light began to flash on and off. After turning the car off and waiting a few minutes I decided to try and drive the car again since I was in an area with no service and it was below freezing outside. The car started and I could use the throttle peddle and the car drove with no problem for about 5 miles before the same exact thing happened. Luckily someone drove by and I was able to catch a ride with them to get service and call a tow truck. This issue came out of nowhere with no prior issues to the car. This is a very dangerous issue that could result in not only an accident on the road because of the rapid speed decrease but also risks leaving people stranded like I was.

5 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/03/2020

The warning lights- brakes, tire pressure, cruise control, engine lights and traction control all come on and won't go off. Had them reset by the mechanics but a day later they came back on while I was driving down the highway for no reason. Cruise no longer works as the lights are on. A lot of people on line seem to have this problem and I think you should make Subaru issue some kind of recall to fix this problem. Thank you.

6 Cruise Control problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/19/2019

Dec 7th. Lane centering and cruise control functions on. While traveling south on I-75 in the center lane my wife moved to the left lane to pass another car. After passing the car she had to fight the steering wheel to stay in the left hand lane. After several minutes she took her hands off the wheel and the car veered sharply to the right and across the dashed white line into the center lane. As she righted herself back into the left hand lane I reached over and turned the lane centering function off. About 15 minutes later she was following a brown van. The cruise control was still on, was maintaining a speed of 68 mph and safe distance. Cruise was set at 70mph and distance at 4 bars. The van exited the interstate at which time the Outback started a hard acceleration and had reached a speed of 87 mph before I realized what was happening and turned off cruise control. Acceleration factor was set to normal, I then set it to eco Dec 19th. Cruise control on, lane centering on cruise set at 70 mph, distance at 2 bars. Passed a semi that was doing less than 70 mph. I now had a pack behind me and another pack a good ways in front of me. Moved back into the center lane where I passed the truck. Cruise started accelerating, at 77mph turned the cruise off. My foot was not on the accelerator. Cruise acceleration was still on eco mode. Speed then decreased as expected. I now have 2 instantaneous of where the cruise control accelerated the vehicle passed the set speed. I now have 1 instantaneous of where the vehicle would not stay in its lane. Note. I like my Subaru Outback very much. It is quiet, comfortable and easy to drive. However, I believe the incorrect functioning of the vehicle on the above two dates warrant documentation for further safety investigation. Neither the dealer or Subaru has yet been informed.

7 Cruise Control problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/06/2019

Tl-the contact owns a 2020 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while the cruise control was engaged without warning the contact lost control of the steering and the vehicle defted to the left. At that moment the contact managed to reagin the steering and control th vehicle. The dealer (miller hill Subaru 4710 miller trunk hwy, duluth, mn 55811(218) 722-5337 ) was contacted and schedule a diagnoses test to be performed. The vehicle was not repaired. No daignses test was done at thi time. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 600. Ck.

8 Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

9 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/12/2019

While driving the check engine, cruise control, abs, and vehicle dynamics control lights all came on. I later learned that a bad O2 sensor was the cause. It was raining and when I applied the brakes moderately firmly due to another car stopping hard in front of me, my car's brakes locked up and I slid on the wet pavement. Fortunately no accident occurred. After replacing the 02 sensor, the lights went off. Weeks later the same lights came on again due to what turned out to be a bad gas cap. When it was replaced, the lights went out. Now the other 02 sensor is intermittently going out, and it triggers the same lights. However I have been very surprised to learn that when these lights are on, those systems are disabled. It is astounding that safety is intentionally removed from a car due to a loose gas cap or bad 02 sensor.

10 Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/21/2019

Recently purchased 2019 Subaru from a similar 2017. Cruise control speed settings have changed which now require you to take your eyes off the road to watch for speed settings to change. On the 2017 and all other vehicles I have owned, to increase your speed setting by one mph, you push once and release. To increase by 5 mph, push and hold until it senses the increase. Now. . . . A quick push of the button results in a 5 mph increase while you have to hold the button and watch the dashboard indicator as it slowly increases your setting 1 mph at a time. This is dangerous since your eyes are no longer on the road but on the dash area. Everything else I own, thermostats, keyboards, tv remotes. . . . All move up or down one degreee or channel at a time unless you hold the key press longer, then you get a faster repeat. I feel that taking my eyes off the road to watch my speed selection change is akin to texting. Downright dangerous. The dealer from whom I purchased the new vehicle responds by saying. . . . "things change, get used to it". I find this situatiion unacceptable!.

11 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/30/2018

Car will suddenly go limp. With no warning or anything the car is still running but there is no throttle or throttle pedal response. You can floor the gas pedal and nothing happens. It has happens while driving down a road and all you can do is hope that you can get to the side of the road. I was driving down a country road when this last happened. I came to a turn where you either have to stop or merge to the right onto another road. As I went to accererate there was no response from the car. I looked down and the check engine light is on as well as the cruise control light is now flashing. I tried turning the car off and back on several times. I finally shut the car off for 3-5 minutes before the throttle would respond. If this happened on the a busy freeway with heavy traffic, it could be very dangerous!!.

12 Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/30/2018

I believe the problem is with the eyesight driver assist if this is associated with the cruise control. I have the car set at 3 car lengths & use cruise always. On the highway when cruise is set to 70 - with or without following another car - I will look down and I find myself going 85 miles an hour. This happens every time I drive on the highway. Other problem is the safety feature of staying in one's lane. I have never had to hold onto a steering wheel to keep control over the vehicle like I do now. It over-corrects and I have actually been thrown into another lane. This is most dangerous on the highway. I have had this problem since getting the car and have reported it and have been blown off by Subaru dealership where I bought the car as well as a local Subaru repair shop.

13 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/17/2018

Sudden unwanted forceful acceleration (suspect auto cruise control got engaged via eyesight malfunction), collision avoidance failed to engage. Back home safely from a local grocery, pulled the car slight on the driveway, stopped with foot on the brake to open the garage, about to hit the home link, must remain stopped while garage door opens because driveway slopes downward, heard engine roar with foot still on the brake, car started throttle forcefully, got bewildered, pressed hard on the brake; it did not respond, the car hit hard on the garage and brick wall, causing extensive damages. Air bags deployed, driver was senseless, both driver and passenger hurt, car is declared total. It was very hot at about 4:15 pm, air condition had been running at full force all the while during the short 15 minute drive. The driveway has a 10 ft slab with upward slope, the car stopped with front wheels at the end of the first slab. The remaining driveway is about 30 ft on a downward slope. I keep the car totally standstill while the garage is opening. The car was at a slight angle facing slightly toward the driver side corner of the garage. The car is still on my driveway: event data recorder and eyesight data recorder should have valuable diagnostic information. The impact was very forceful: a complete brick wall got displaced by almost 1 inch at one side and the displacement on the other side of the wall caused a two story load bearing brick column to crack on both sides. Garage structure and roof got damaged. This car is maintained in good condition and never have been in accident before. Called police, but they did not come. Let me know ASAP if you want diagnostic data: I am 100% sure that this is a manufacturing defect. I saw collision avoidance work in many other situation, but this time, it did not work. This is a serious public safety issue happening a lot with Subaru.

14 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/05/2017

While traveling at highway speed the gas pedal quits working and car goes into limp mode, this is where car travels at 30 mph with no control from the gas pedal, the check engine light comes on and the cruise control light flashes, the only way to reset the fuel pedal is to pull over, shut car off for 1 min. And restart pedal will work but check engine light and cruise control light will flash until error code is reset. Code is p2138 . This may fix pedal temporary but it will happen again. When pedal quits working this is very dangerous in heavy traffic. This has happened to the car at leased 20 times, have not found a permanent fix yet. Needs to be recalled and repaired.

15 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/22/2017

Driving at 55 miles per hour on hwy 213, check engine light came on, lost power(limp mode), cruise control flashing. Pulled over to side of road on hill(barely able to make safe spot). Turned out vehicle. Restarted(lights still warning), back up and forward to assure power. Decided to try to get to nearby community/auto shop. Was able to do so. Diagnosis: p2138. They performed diagnostic procedure, results inconclusive. Cycled the accelerator through numerous positions and raters with variations on position/pressure applied to pedal, and monitor lab scope. Sensor signals were precise and without errors. Owner researched online and found numerous cased of same-without resolution for many people-reoccurring with costly repairs to attempt repair. Suggested calling Subaru. Com which I did. No reassurance as to problem being fixed, just said take it to a dealer. Concerned with safety as I drive my granddaughter in car, as well as safety for myself and others. Will take it to dealer but not optimistic about a permanent fix and safety of future driving.

16 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/28/2017

My car has been experiencing episodes where it suddenly stops accelerating while I am driving. This has happening both on city streets, and on the highway. It's mostly about 5 minutes after I initially turned the car on, but not always. I will be driving normally and all of a sudden the check engine lights and cruise control lights will come on and then the car will instantly stop accelerating with no additional warning. The most recent time this has happened, my car actually sped up without me pressing on the gas pedal. The code reads p2138. After turning my car off and waiting a few minutes it drives fine (although sometimes the lights are still on). I have had a Subaru dealership check out the problem and after looking at the car for about one week they could not find the problem. The problem is that this issue appears suddenly but then goes away so that by the time I can get it over to a mechanic it is no longer an issue. This has been going on for about 4 months and I would say I've experienced the issue about 6-7 times. It is very dangerous when I am driving on the highway and the car stops accelerating.

17 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/19/2017

I was driving and without notice the cruise control shut off, because of a minor problem with the catalytic converter efficiency. Had the vehicle behind me been any closer I could have been rear ended. It turns out that Subaru has programed their vehicles to do this. Why would anyone program a car to have a sudden loss of power over such a minor issue. Recalls for "keys turning off" have happened, and the manufacturers knew about it. Subaru knows this happens and I hope there will be a recall to fix this very dangerous situation. I hope this is bought to the highest officials at NHTSA and is address properly. I hope no one gets killed before this is addressed.

18 Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/08/2016

I was pulling into a parking space when the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward with the engine revving. I slammed on the brakes preventing a collision with the care parked in the opposite parking space. The car continued to try to accelerate. I took the car out of gear and the engine roared, over revved, slowed, and over revved a second time before finely slowing down. This is the second time this has happened. Definite safety issue. Has something to do with the eyesight system/cruise control.

19 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/03/2016

While traveling on the freeway the check engine light came on, as well as a blinking cruise control light. The car would not respond topressure on the gas pedal and I was unable to accelerate. I coasted to the shoulder of the road and turned the engine off. After starting the engine again, I was able to drive off the freeway and went straight to my mechanic. The diagnosis was trouble code p2138 faulty throttle position sensor in the gas pedal leading to no acceleration. The gas pedal assembly was replaced.

20 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/14/2016

On three occasions within a two week period I was driving on city streets and the car would not accelerate when the gas pedal was depressed. On these occasions I was starting from a red light or just after I had braked for something, depressed the gas pedal and the speed did not change. The check engine light came on, the cruise control light flashed and the car went into limp mode. I limped to the side of the road and turned the engine off. On the first try to restart the car it would not turn over. After waiting and trying again the car turned over and the gas pedal would work. The check engine light and the flashing cruise control light remained on and went off after starting the car a couple/few times. I went to my mechanic to check the car and he found p2138 three times in the history. This happened once when entering a traffic circle and twice while crossing intersections, very dangerous! info on this site and a Subaru Outback forum shows this to be a problem many have experienced. I called the manufacturer.

21 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/03/2016

While driving at highway and city street speeds the check engine light comes on/the cruise control flashes and car goes limp, gas pedal stops working. A code that has shown up is p2138. Very dangerous. When I put the car in neutral the engine revs to a constant 3,000 rpm. It has happened to me on 3 occasions.

22 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/11/2016

Cruise control bug. If I decrease my speed by 3 or more mph in rapid succession, the cruise control resets to the original speed, I. E. The cruise control speed changes from 60 to 59 to 58 to 57 to 56 to 60. This seems like a dangerous bug since it causes unintended acceleration. I have a video that I can share for documentation.

23 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/08/2016

This is my second complaint to be filed. This has been an ongoing problem since 2013. My 2007 Subaru Outback loses vehicle power as the accelerator stops responding. The cruise control, traction, and check engine lights all become illuminated or flashing. This is especially common upon restarting the car after a short drive, coming to a stop, or after 5-10 minutes from a cold start. Restarting the vehicle until the vehicle will not restart and then restarting once more resets the issue for approximately 24 hours. Cleaning the connector plug to the accelerator temporarily resolves the issue anywhere form 6 months to one week. Subaru has been contacted and issued a generic response mostly dealing with air bag safety concerns. This is a very hazardous default in the vehicle which is being ignored.

24 Cruise Control problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

The Subaru eyesight system is dangerous. I've had two instances where the vehicle activated the forward-collision warning and started to break for reasons unknown to me. Once was in the middle of an intersection. Fortunately, the cars behind me were not too close to rear end me. This happened around 2 p. M. In the middle of summer with the sun behind the vehicle. I brought the vehicle in for recall work to the local Subaru dealership several months later and asked them to pull any relevant data for the two incidents. By then, the system cleared those two events. The dealer said I should purchase a video camera and run it in the car while driving to capture any false alarms in order to help them troubleshoot it as according to them the system does not capture any video/image data when it records an event. This is absolutely outrageous. Subaru has cameras in the eyesight system and flash memory to store data in - storing an image snapshot is not overly storage intensive, and yet I am supposed to invest several hundred dollars in an independent video camera to help Subaru debug their system. The dealership suggested not using eyesight on sunny days where the camera could be blinded by the sun. Hello - I live in nevada, it's sunny here over 300 days per year. This would make the eyesight system practically useless and I'll lose cruise control. How am I supposed to know when it's too sunny for the system that it will malfunction?.

25 Cruise Control problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/22/2016

The contact owns a 2016 Subaru Outback. While driving 60 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle veered to the left without warning. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,400.

26 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/05/2016

Was driving to work and stopped at a light. Light turned green and I released the brake pedal, car started faster than normal with no pressure on the gas pedal. I pressed the gas pedal repeatedly but it did not respond. I pulled over and put the car in neutral and the engine started reving high light the pedal was stuck. I tried pressing the cancel button on the cruise control, thinking that it might have gotten stuck but that didn't work so I put it in park and turned it off. Tried turning it back on once and it didn't turn over. Tried it again and it turned on, but this time the check engine light was on, and the cruise control indicator was blinking. Could have been much worse if this was on the highway and it got stuck at a high speed, or if I was trying to turn onto a busy road and couldn't accelerate.

27 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/04/2016

Throttle failure. While driving throttle completely fails. No acceleration, car will only move at automatic idle speed. Cruise control light flashes, check engine light on. Extremely dangerous -- very lucky it didn't happen in an intersection or while passing another car. Turns out to be common for this model -- and mine has only 93,000 miles. I am attaching a sample from an online complaint site. This requires a recall.

28 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

While driving car check engine light will come on and cruise control light will flash. Car goes into limp mode and the accelerator will not longer respond dropping the cars speed drastically. This can happen on any road, at any speed, and any weather condition. Temporary fix is to stop and cycle the cars power three or four times. More permanent fix is to replace the pedal assembly-accelerator at a cost of $199. Happened a few dozen times before I finally got the pedal assembly replaced. Issued started early 2016, and replaced the assembly in 2018.

29 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/01/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate as the vehicle lost power and the cruise control deactivated. The check engine warning light illuminated. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the throttle position sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 182,000. Oo.

30 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/30/2015

I was driving when suddenly my car would not go forward more than a few mph, the check engine light came on and the cruise control was flashing. Thankfully I was only doing about 30 miles an hour in town. I pulled over, turned my car off, turned it back on and it wouldn't start. I started it for a 2nd time and it started and I drove home. I took it to my Subarus only mechanic of 17 years (I'm on my 4th subie) who thought the error code of p2138 was odd. He told me to let him know if it happened again. . . . And it did a few days later so I took it back in. My mechanic called Subaru and found out this was not an uncommon problem. I've only had it back a day so I'm not sure if the problem has been fixed. I certainly hope it has as I'm terrified of the thought of this happening on the highway doing 70 mph on my way to work in horrible traffic. After getting on the internet, this long-time Subaru lover is surprised and disappointed that Subaru hasn't done a recall on this problem. This is a very dangerous issue that needs to be addressed.

31 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/15/2015

The contact owns a 2007 Subaru Outback. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle lost power. The cruise control and traction lights illuminated. The contact coasted to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted after a couple of minutes. The contact drove home and called an independent mechanic, who was unable to diagnose the failure. The failure recurred several times. The failure was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not provided. The failure mileage was 249,000.

32 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

The contact owns a 2007 Subaru Outback. While driving approximately 75 mph, the check engine and cruise control deactivation sensors illuminated before the speed suddenly decelerated to approximately 20 mph. The failure occurred on multiple occasions. After the vehicle was turned off and on, it operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 120,000.

33 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/28/2015

When driving on the highway at 75mph the engine light and cruise control light came on and the accelerator became unresponsive. After pulling over and restarting the car it worked fine. This has happened 7 times so far and after reading many posts on Outback forums it seems that this is a very common and dangerous problem that needs to be figured out by Subaru.

34 Cruise Control problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Cruise control (cc) caused what I thought at the time of the incident was unintended acceleration. Operation of cc is different from any cc I used in the past. The cc was already engaged and I was going about 40 mph on a highway. I decided to increase my speed, so I pressed the 'set +' button. After a couple of seconds when I reached 43 mph, I released the button. The car continued to accelerate to 70 mph. Luckily the highway was empty and I was able to disengage the cc. The problem is that the cc 'set +' (and 'set -') has 2 positions - pushing it half way increases your speed like a traditional cc, and pushing it all the way actually increases the set speed of your cc by 5 mph increments. Hence when I thought I was just accelerating to 43 mph, I was actually setting the cc speed to 70 mph. One of the option packages with the car adds this 5 mph increment 'feature'. The quick reference guide and the regular manual do not mention this 'feature' - it is only mentioned in one of the auxiliary manuals for the option package. I think under different circumstances that this incident could have turned out much worse than it did. The cc does not work like traditional cc, and the controls look like a traditional cc.

35 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/17/2015

I was stopped at a traffic light, when the light changed I attempted to give the car gas to begin moving and there was no power in the pedal. All the lights on the instrument panel were on and the radio was playing. I had some power and was able to move out of the flow of oncoming traffic. I parked but did not turn the car off. I turned on my hazards and tried the pedal again. Nothing! I turned the car off and restarted the engine. At this point the check engine light came on and the cruise control light began flashing. I attempted and this time there was power in the pedal. The check engine light remained on and the cruise control light is flashing. I have dropped the car off at my mechanic. This was scary with traffic bearing down on me at rush hour and no where to go initially. I am just very thankful I was not traveling at a high rate of speed when this occurred.
