40 Wheel problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/25/2018

I have always wanted a 3. 6l and this is my first 3. 6l 6 cylinder 2018 Subaru Outback! am disappointed with few problems: the front seating is not comfortable and not supportive at all, especial in hard turns the seats will not hold you in place, the seat bed is to short and does not support long legs if you are over 5 feet tall. For some reason this is my 3rd Subaru 2nd Outback that has wheel alignment problem right out of the box!!! I always seem to be pulling the steering-wheel/vehicle to the right and my steering is always on a 15-20 degree off and if I don't steer and pull to the right the vehicle drifts way to the left lane and this dangers and a major problem. Also while driving on highways with speed over 60 the vehicle vibrates I took it in for 4 tire wheel balancing and I hope this will fix the problem, mind you this is a new car. 2018 Outback has a problem while driving on highways and speeds over 60 the vehicle drifts or sways dangerously left and right out of control as if something is pushing or pushing the vehicle left and right, I don't know if the highway vibration with speeds exceeding 60 is associated with the sway or its a wheel balancing problem. Previously owned Subaru's 2011 Outback, 2011 legacy, 2014 Outback, 2018 Outback with only 290 miles on the vehicle with a full gas tank I drove it till it displayed and the gas light is on that I only have 40 miles to go before running out of gas so I drove it to be precise another 12 miles then stated that I only have 30 miles to empty and parked it while I went to work , 6 hours later to go home and the vehicle will not start, unfortunately I ran out of gas! I don't know if this was a glitch or its going to be a problem but I will keep my eyes on it.

42 Wheel problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/31/2018

Driver side front wheel/suspension is making rattling noise while driving at any speed. The noise is worse when hitting uneven surfaces on the road (like a repair spot or transition from concrete to asphalt) . The front-end sounds loose, and there is a slight vibration when driving at higher speeds. We have taken our car into the dealer multiple times and they say all is ok and the noise is as intended by the manufacturer. We do not feel safe in the car.

43 Wheel problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/10/2017

I was required to replace the third wheel bearing under warrantee (right rear wheel) on my car at 61359 miles on 10october2017. The first bearing (left rear wheel) was replaced on 15january2016 and the second bearing (left front wheel) was replaced on 29 July after 35270 elapsed miles. Despite complaining to Subaru ntn'l hqtrs requesting that all remaining bearings be replaced after the second bearing failed it was apparently decided that the remaining bearing be replaced only after failing rather than acting proactively. My understanding is that wheel bearings should more or less last the life of the car and not experience the high failure rate that my car has shown. A friend of my also owns a 2015 Outback and has experienced similar problems with his car having to replace both rear wheel bearings. There should be a manufacturer's product recall issued to all Subaru Outback owners to address this product failure after considering the high rate of failure for these bearings experienced by my friend and me. No accident or injuries occurred during these instances noted for both vehicles.

44 Wheel problem of the 2014 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/28/2016

I have had several instances where when driving in snow on interstate the snow gets packed in the wheels it causes severe problems steering. On more than one instance I have had to pull off the road and find a car wash to clean the snow in order to be able to drive safely. Front end vibrates so much I had to reduce speed to below 45 mph and to pull off the road. I have asked Subaru through their national support hotline how to solve the problem. Their response was that they had never heard this complaint and did not have a solution. I asked that they email their response so I would have it in writing. They said they would do that but no response was ever received. I did confirm they had my correct email address and have received survey followups using my email address but nothing from the support center. Purchasing repacement steel wheels can resolve the problem but they are expensive ( $400 to $1000) depending on wheel type. The local dealer offered the solutions of spraying pam inside the wheel well, buying after market wheel covers ( none exist per my research), or dealer replacing the wheels at cost of $1200 which may include tires, not sure. Local dealer also offered to hose out my wheels if I brought it in which would require driving the vehicle with the problem which is unsafe. When I asked about towing they pointed out the vehicle is out of warranty, 39,000 miles. I pointed out that it had happened prior to warranty running out and had been prevviously reported with no solution provided. I live in a snowy area and having to pull off the road each time this issue occurs is unsafe. My concern is that Subaru doesn't want to acknowledge the problem formally and that the safety of the owners should be considered.

45 Wheel problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

The contact owns a 2017 Subaru Outback. When rotating or replacing tires, the tire pressure transponders on the wheels must be removed and placed in their original positions or re-flashed at the Subaru dealer since 2015. If not, they would not be in compliance with new york and would fail inspection. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The contact had not experienced a failure.

46 Wheel problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/30/2016

Lug studs break off when removing to change tire. I had a flat and 1 stud broke off. I was left driving with only 4 studs. This has now happened on 2 of the four wheels. When inquiring with the dealer I was told this is a known problem. They actually suggested selling me more repair studs than I needed as they were sure more would break off.

47 Wheel problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/23/2016

I was pulling into a parking space and put on the brake. Vehicle didn't respond to braking and kept going, over the, curb, across the median and hit 5 parked cars before it stopped.

48 Wheel problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/08/2016

Purchased my 2011 Subaru new and have always keep the upkeep. About a year ago my tierod in the front went bad and ruined my tires so had to get new tires. Then it started stalling all the time, and no one seemed to why. Once at an intersection which I was almost hit. Then had to change the timing belt, but knew this when I bought it. Then the muffler rusted and now I will have to change the head gaskets. I purchased this car because everyone said it would last forever. Well I guess it will if you keep fixing everything that is wrong with it. This is my first and last Subaru I will ever buy. Had better luck with my old Dodge caravan.

49 Wheel problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/18/2016

While driving on the leftist lane (four-lane in total) of a busy highway, I suddenly felt that my car lost balance and ran toward/along the guardrail in the middle of highway, which slowed my car in several seconds and saved my life. Later I found that my left front wheel was totally gone (not only the tire, but also the whole wheel system). See my photos taken on the scene. It was a clear day with great visibility and there were many cars on the highway. The road was dry, straight and smooth, with only guardrails in the middle of highway and no concrete dividends. There was nothing on the road that I can hit first before the wheel came off. The airbag was not on. I did nothing wrong (no citation and ticket). This is a brand new car I bought just 20 days ago. How could a brand new car lose one wheel while driving within 20 days of purchase? this might indicate a mechanical problem or a defect with the car. Of course, Subaru denied nothing wrong with the car. For a terrible accident like this, I could have been killed. A thorough investigation will help to save lives.

50 Wheel problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/17/2015

Bridgestone dueler h/p sport as 225/60r18 100h m&s d97wbz. These are very dangerous tires that came with brand new Subaru. Terrible ice/snow traction. Should be better quality on awd car. Had to buy new michelins with 55 miles on car.

51 Wheel problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/26/2015

At 36,573 miles 5/26/15 had to replace left rear wheel bearing, at 79,176 miles 12/16/15 had to replace right rear wheel bearing, at 94,957 miles 4/1/16 had to replace left rear wheel bearing. Car becomes unsafe to drive when wheel bearing is failing.

52 Wheel problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/04/2014

Subaru Outback began to exhibit "ghost walking" while driving straight during a winter storm. Rear end attempted to race the front end, and could not regain control. This "ghost walking" is well discussed in the online form at Subaruoutback. Org. Car eventually made it to the edge of the road where it then proceeded to roll 3 times. The experience was not the normally sliding on ice. The rear end seemed to have a mind of its own.

53 Wheel problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/13/2013

Contipro contact 225/60r17 tires were mounted as replacements 11/17/13. Tires were rotated and maintained by dealer on a regular basis. Primarily highway/city driving. I have not hit any fod or potholes - there has been no unusual trauma to the tires. After 13 months, 18k miles, the left front tire's inner sidewall suffered a catastrophic failure. Continental refused to pro-rate or make any adjustment for the premature demise of this tire. Because the car is awd, I was forced to purchase 4 new tires. I believe there is a manufacturing defect in this brand/model of tire. Luckily, I was only driving 25 mph when the tire failed. I have now researched and discovered that there are multiple reports of this type of tire failure for contipro contact 225/60r17. One report indicates that continental replaced the tire under warranty at 18 mos, however, it appears that continental is aware of a manufacturing defect and has now limited the warranty period to 12 mos. They have apparently continued to experience problems with the inner sidewall failure because the tire is no longer offered. I believe this tire should be recalled in the interest of consumer safety.

56 Wheel problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/04/2013

Your mandate for the use of tpms is another example of government good intentions resulting in little benefit and unnecessary cost to consumers. I want to run winter tires on our Subaru and planned to purchase the tires on wheels equipped with tpms sensors. However, the only way to re-set the sensors is to take the car to the Subaru dealer and pay $90 in the fall when the winter set goes on and to pay another $90 in the spring when the all-season tire go back on the car. The winter tires are expected to add a significant margin of safety in snow/ice conditions. The annual cost of re-setting the tpms sensor will likely keep me from running winter tires. What is the benefit of having a tpms system that cannot be easily re-set by the vehicle owner?.

57 Wheel problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

Front wheel bearings failed. Initially, the noise happened around 30-40 mph. Then the noise (grinding/rotational) got progressively louder and started happening even at low speeds (under 20 mph). Eventually, the noise was accompanied by vibrations/shuddering when the broken bearing supported the load of the car on every rotation of the wheel.

58 Wheel problem of the 2008 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/16/2013

Vehicle started making humming noise from rear end which got progressively worse. Brought it into the dealer who told me the rear bearings were bad. I was told they weren't covered since my warrantty had expired. Early failure of wheel bearings is apparently a known issue with Subaru and should be covered under a recall.

59 Wheel problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/19/2013

My 2011 Subaru Outback came with oe contiprocontact p225/60r17. This is a tire of continental that has an 80000 mile warranty. These tires on my car wore down to the tire replacement indicator at 36750 miles. . I call continental and was told that oe tires on new cars are for defect only, not mileage. I feel this is a total ripoff on the part of continental tires and a total misrepresentation of matter. When the retail tire has the 80k warranty. I feel continental should reimburse me the pro rated amount on the $724 spent on the exact replacement tires I purchased.

60 Wheel problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/09/2013

While driving on snow covered roads with three people and ski equipment in the vehicle, I experienced dangerous, abnormal handling. This phenomenon has been reported by many other 2005-2009 Subaru Outback owners, and is believed to be caused by a design flaw in the vehicles suspension system. Specifically, the Outbacks appear to have a chassis tuning issue where the rear suspension oscillates in such a way to cause rear-steer. When this occurs road feel and handling confidence are completely lost. Please investigate this dangerous design flaw and see that it is properly addressed by the vehicle manufacturer.

61 Wheel problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/12/2012

When I make a hard right turn, such as pulling out into the near lane or parking, my front passenger tire comes in contact with my fender well - specifically the body molding and violently. When measuring my hub (center) to hub (center), the passenger side of the car is a full . 5 inch closer than the driver side. You can also measure the distance between the front tire to fender well and see that the passenger side is closer to the back of the fender well than the driver side. I notified west houston Subaru in late Dec. 2012 of the problem so they checked the alignment & measured the aforementioned hub/tire/fender distances. They acknowledged a discrepancy between the driver and passenger side; said they would contact Subaru of America (soa) and follow up. . . Unfortunately I had to contact them back. . . Then it was suggested I contact soa myself so I did on January 8, 2013. . Read more...

62 Wheel problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/19/2012

Repeated severe shimming of car when dirt or mud gets in wheel wells. In winter any slush or snow on the wheels causes a control problem. Car and steering wheel shake severely. Once inside of wheels are pressure washed problem disappears, only to reappear when dirt again gets into the wheels. Discussion with the dealer indicated that this is a common problem especially in winter. Internet search indicates this also is a common problem especially in the 2011 Subaru Outback's. This is a design flaw in the design of the wheels which pick up debris on a large flat ledge. I feel this is a safety issue as control of vehicle is compromised when you have severe shaking.

63 Wheel problem of the 2008 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

I purchased the 2008 Outback 2. 5 limited used with 32k miles. At 41k miles the right front wheel bearing went out. Was making a very loud rubbing noise when turning and on the highway. The bearing was replaced under powertrain warranty. Yesterday I was informed that my left front bearing has gone out, now at 80k miles (all highway mileage). Now it is out of warranty. The 2 shops I spoke to regarding the issue stated this is actually very common on these Subaru models and they generate quite a bit of business. Subaru needs to provide a TSB and fix the issue as they have spec'd faulty wheel bearings.

64 Wheel problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/05/2012

When driving on the highway the vehicle exhibits very poor straight line stability. Vehicle wanders within the lane and requires excessive steering wheel correction to maintain straight direction. Vehicle 500 miles on it (350 driven by owner) but is now sitting in driveway for fear of personal safety if emergency maneuver is necessary on the highway.

65 Wheel problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/18/2012

I have a Subaru because I live off the paved road and it is an off-road car. Two problems: 1) if driving in snow, snow packs into the wheel well and prevents front wheels turning properly. I carry a weedout, other people I have talked to carry ice picks and trowels for getting the snow out. This has happened to me since Dec 2010, whenever driving in wet snow. I heard it discussed on car talk, so I know it is a common complaint. 2) manual transmission linkage is now exposed on the underside of the 2011. The car gets stuck in one gear and will not shift. Happened in 2nd and 4th. I got it to the dealer and they removed sticks and gravel from the linkage. They said they had many 2011 manual transmission subies in that week with sticks and gravel in the linkage due to the bad weather. I could not go up hills or start from a stop when it was stuck in 4th. I could not drive over 20mph when stuck in 2nd. I could not reverse either way. This is not safe, especially when driving in snow and traffic in the mountains. I asked the dealer if they could put on something to cover and protect the linkage and they said no, ever since Subaru went to 6 forward gears the linkage is exposed and they cannot add anything to cover it. I think the 6 forward gear manual transmission Outbacks should be recalled, and they should go back to 5 gears forward and properly cover up the linkage.

66 Wheel problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/15/2012

2011 Subaru Outback. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle shaking while driving due to snow and ice build-up in the tires. The dealer washed the underside of the car in hot water, to melt the ice which resolved the problem.

67 Wheel problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

The contact owns a 2011 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the wheels were defective. The wheels accumulated snow and caused the vehicle to vibrate out of control. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on several occasions, but the dealer could not remedy the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the failure was an engineering defect that could not be corrected. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 24,000. The VIN information was not available.

68 Wheel problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/13/2011

Vehicle vibration - after about 8k miles a vibration started in the seat and steering. Tires were rebalanced using a road force balancing machine. . Then the vibration would come and go even at set speeds. . But would get worse going around turns at highway speeds. Dealership did a "fix" which didn't change anything. No matter the loaded in the car 5 people in the car or empty vibration comes and go. They say the issue was fixed in 2012 models had a loaner while car was in for the 2 day fix. . Same vibration issue as I had. The only good thing about this fix. . My rear tires are wearing better then that they were before it. . . The outside of my tires were wearing funny even when the alignment was within spec.

69 Wheel problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

The front end of the car shakes on smooth roads (recently repaved road) and it tends to persist whether you are accelerating or decelerating. Previously took car in for the dealership to look at this issue and they stated it was a wheel balance issue. They rotated my wheels, stated they balanced the wheels and also stated that I needed new tires even though there is plenty of wear left on the tires. The issue never went away on the shaking front end of my car and continues to be an issue today. ## VIN passed ## 2010 Subaru Outback 3. 6r ##.

70 Wheel problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/05/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Subaru Outback. The contact was driving 55 mph when the lug nuts detached from the vehicle. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 02v235000 (wheels) but was not included in the recall. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the failure was repaired. Neither the dealer nor manufacturer was contacted in regards to the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000 and the current mileage was 155,000. The VIN was unavailable.
