Subaru Tribeca owners have reported 3 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle had been on the highway for about 20 minutes when the transmission temperature light and other warning lights came on. Pulled off the highway and checked transmission fluid level and temp, all were normal. Pulled away and the engine reved up then banged into gear. Drove normally for several miles. The warning lights went off. Drove the next day and for several days with no incidence. Occurred again when on the highway the next week. On the Subaru owners forum found several other owners with similar problems. They stated that the Subaru dealers called it a known issue with the 5eat transmission. The vehicle only has 59,000 miles. Dealer solution is a $2000 valve body. Drives normally for short distances and at slower speeds. When the problem occurs no power is transmitted to the wheels. Unsafe situation.

While driving we smelt something burning, I pulled over to inspect under the car and saw smoke coming from there. I went under and saw that there was liquid covering the catalytic converter, I wiped down as much as I could and drove to my mechanic. He put the car on the lift and we traced to where to liquid was coming from. It went to the front left axle boot, it was ruptured causing grease to be thrown on the hot catalytic converter causing the smoke. This could have evolved into a fire if I had not immediately stopped driving and wiped down the converter. We had to change the complete axle and boot assembly.

While driving this car it constantly loses acceleration. It will have no power then lurch forward and rev. It idles, lurches, and then has no acceleration. I have also replaced the sway bar bearings twice in this car as well as 2 oxygen sensors, and catalytic converter. The deal still cant fix the problem even with the service codes. This car is a danger and a safety issue.
