1 Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 02/17/2021

The steering rack motor failed causing the steering to become incredibly difficult. Turning the wheels at no or low speed takes great force and turning the wheel at faster speeds takes moderate force. The motor died mid trip, causing a very dangerous situation for myself and other motorists. The motor worked perfectly fine while driving to my destination and failed, thankfully, while I was stopped.

2 Steering Failed problem of the 2015 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 06/01/2020

Steering on the interstate highway was somewhat unfamiliar to me, it stayed in one lane but would wander more than I recalled. I assumed it was the studded snowtires (hakkepellita) and pulled over to check tire pressures. I carefully drove on to the supercharger, noticed as I bacaked into the supercharger position the steering was difficult, as if the power steering was compromised. Drove home carefully, found the electrified garage which specialized in Tesla repairs, in seabrook, nh. The Tesla was flat-bed transported to them. They reported that during the many weeks they had it, that the steering box had to be replaced. I contacted Tesla customer service of the problem, and they did not respond. As a result, I cancelled a new 2020 Model S during the summer of 2020, and bought a new Lexus instead. I was too uncomfortable with the engineering of the Tesla, and that the steering box should not fail in 7,690 miles since new. I found a service message that discussed a potential problem with the 5 power steering mounting bolts. They came to my home to replace them. I looked up the 38 page service bulletin and found several warnings in it about not taking more than one bolt out at a time. Since they had come to my home to replace the bolts, I theorized perhaps the technician did not follow the bulletin content exactly. Bulletin warned that if you remove more than 1 bolt at a time you must replace the steering box. See bulletin sb-18-32-002 r1 (and revision 2 and rev. 3) . Mine is submodel p85d (awd) and please note first version of the bulletin and revision 2, and 3rd revision are different. They reference service manual procedure 32010102 to replace the steering box on page 4 of sb 18-32-(001) see also: https://teslamotorsclub. Com/tmc/threads/power-steering-falling-apart. 100951/ where the steering box/ps failures are discussed by Tesla owners.

3 Steering Failed problem of the 2014 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 03/02/2019

It's about 8:18 on Saturday, March 2nd, drizzle. I was driving from freeway 56 west to south highway 5. After merge to 5 freeway, I felt the tires slip, then the car suddenly unintended accelerated and steering wheel failed, car whirled at high speed bump into the left side of freeway guard wall, continued to be accelerated spin crossed four lanes hit on to the right guard wall, spin another half circle then stop on emergency lane. Luckily, no other car was involved, I was not hurt at all, except that the car could not drive. By that time the car show 'stability control disabled' see picture. Sitting in my car and calling Tesla report about the accident. They told me the reason was the weather. About ten minutes later, the police came and looked at the scene of the accident. As no other car was involved, no one was injured, no public equipment was damaged, the police did not issue tickets and reports.

4 Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 03/30/2018

My steering failed at 27000 miles and 5 years. The failure occurred one week before Tesla issued a recall for this issue. The service center says that the recall covers replacing the bolts that fail and not the broken steering rack that occurs because of the failed bolts, so they think that I should pay ~$3000 to repair a known defect and obvious safety hazard. I was lucky that the failure happened when the car was stationary.

5 Steering Failed problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 02/19/2018

Here is a discussion thread in which an owner complains that his steering has failed completely: https://teslamotorsclub. Com/tmc/threads/model-s-steering-failed. 109021/ ****snip*** I was driving home tonight (2016 70d)and it sounded like I had a flat tire. Pulled over to check and tires were fine. Started driving again and all traction control and stability control errors came up on the screen and said to call a service center. I have to hold the steering to the left to get the car to go straight. When parked the right front side steering makes a grinding sound and when the steering wheel is straight the right wheel is not. Obviously there has been a mechanical failure of some kind but I'm not sure what it is. I assume I should have the car towed? anyone have a problem like this before? ***snip*** I had my wife turn the wheel in the garage and it was just grinding from the passenger side. Felt more like an issue where the rotor connects to the steering arm. I don't have a handyman bone in my body so I really have no idea *** I am reporting this problem myself even though I am not the owner because Tesla owners rarely submit reports themselves. They are discouraged from doing so by a misguided sense of loyalty to the Tesla brand and "mission". There have been many credible reports of steering and suspension failures with Teslas but very few of theses failures have actually been reported to the authorities. I believe that these failures are being covered up by Tesla and that owners are being discouraged from filing complaints. Please investigate. Concerned citizen.

6 Steering Failed problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Here is a thread on the Tesla motors club forum in which several posters provide detailed photographic evidence that the electric steering motor is falling apart due to corrosion. Https://teslamotorsclub. Com/tmc/threads/power-steering-falling-apart. 100951/ the thread starts in October 2017 and is active right up until the present time with owners describing diy repairs that will probably make the situation even more dangerous. This corroded bolts problem is identical to the problem found on Ford and other makes of cars that resulted in a massive recall. Https://Ford. Oemdtc. Com/1684/15s14-steering-gear-motor-bolt-corrosion-2013-2015-Ford-fusion-Lincoln-mkz-2015-Ford-edge-2 why in the world has there not been a recall of these Teslas? if NHTSA is not going to act then perhaps the canadian authorities will. Https://teslamotorsclub. Com/tmc/threads/power-steering-falling-apart. 100951/page-6 snip** today at 5:36 pm I just got a call from transport canada today. They would like to hear of all canadian vehicle steering rack failures for their investigation. Please call darryl malone of transport canada at 1-800-333-0510 they are especially interested in examining a failed part even if it is just a sheared bolt. Unfortunately I did not ask for the failed rack when I got mine replaced . ** many Teslas are in use on roads that are salted during the winter. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Please act immediately. Outraged citizen.
