Tesla Model S owners have reported 128 problems related to wiper (under the visibility category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Tesla Model S based on all problems reported for the Model S.
Went to back into charger and back up camera still showed photo from where car was parked at home before I started my trip. I noticed a car behind me in mirror but picture showed no cars (and wrong location).

Wiper motor linkage on these vehicles break, leaving only the driver side wiper functional.
I brought in the car to be parked as part of NHTSA recall no. 21v-035. The "fix" provided has led to my center console in the Model S to shutdown completely. I contacted Tesla to inform them that their fix as part of the recall has actually led to more problems.
Bubbles first appeared in the dashboard / instrument control panel display on the driver side on 3/25. The bubbles have been moving around over time and at some points while I've been driving (unable to take a photo), have travelled to the speedometer blocking my visibility of current speed.

Driving down the road on a 25 degree day. I turned on the front defroster and the entire windshield cracked across the entire windshield. I've heard of other Tesla owners having the same problem. Cheap untested glass. All Teslas need new glass. Two weeks later I was driving on a 20 degree day, turned on the rear defrost and the entire rear glass cracked. Zero chance that either of these problems were cause by external issues. Both occured on sunny days with no other traffic anywhere near me. Purely poor material and poor engineering and/or inadequate testing.

Tesla has released new firmware 11 software, version 2021. 44. 25. 2, for the master computer screen which is what controls all the software controlled functions of the vehicle. During the update, which was not communicated in advance of the update, Tesla did a complete user interface change & redesign. This materially changed how the vehicle functions from a usability standpoint and a safety standpoint. With the said user interface update and change (again, complete redesign), Tesla changed locations of "buttons" to activate functions required for safety. One major change (among too many to be able to list in a safety complaint) was window defroster/defogger, to keep windows clear of fog & frost. Tesla has moved buttons and options which were directly accessible with a single touch and no menu changes, and has moved said changes into sub-menu's. Doing this now requires the driver to take their eyes off the road, and at least one hand off the wheel for an extended length of time to navigate sub-menu's to find the placement of the button to activate defrosters. Instead of a fraction of a second glance to hit the button, now requires 2-5 seconds of looking to find it. Same goes for heat/ac controls. Further, the redesign materially changes the functionality of the vehicles menus, and completely changes the functionality of every and all options under the menu's. Again, Tesla did this with no prior notification that such a change would be taking place. Further, Tesla service will not reverse the software changes. Tesla, with this update, has focused more on a stupid "holiday light show", and providing more games to the driver. I do not want a stupid light show or games. I want my vehicle to operate how it was advertised in a usability manor that does not decrease safety.
Wiper motor failing.
The vehicle was not experiencing display or review view camera display issues but was out of caution serviced nuder manufacturer recall number sb2121001 (NHTSA recall number 21v035) for no charge. The vehicle is not under warranty. There was no charge for the initial "repair". When the vehicle was returned, the rear view camera did not function (black screen and/or serious flicker when video was partially displayed). Also bubbles were introduced into the front display panel. On questioning the repair, I was strongly encouraged by technician and then by manager to get an updated "infotainment with an upgraded mcu" (which is unclear but perhaps a superset of the vcm and display components that are under recall), for a cost of $2000 and $500 for it to include fm radio (that I already have and always worked fine). The manager offered a deal for $1000 + $500 to include fm radio. An appointment was set up and the estimate for approval was $1500 for "infotainment upgrade" and $500 for "radio upgrade", and $120 taxes for a total of $2120. 00 I will cancel the upgrade and inquire again if the recall work is able to return the vehicle in working order without it needing a $2000 upgrade to resolve an issue related to loss of viability and backup camera (cited under the recall) and to charge me $500 for an fm radio I already have that works fine.

The contact owns a 2014 Tesla Model S. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 21v035000 (back over prevention, visibility, exterior lighting) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The vehicle was taken to Tesla (5544 okeechobee blvd, west palm beach, FL 33417) where it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Purchased a used Tesla, today (on 2nd day) driving on local street, it was raining a bit, turned on wipers, didn't work, pulled over and attepmted few more times, no luck. Tesla attempted to address the issue remotely through basic troubleshooting but no luck. When wipers were turned on, it was pulling downward instead of going up. They ended up towing car, currently in service center.
The emmc failure of Tesla Model S/x manufactured from 2012 to mid 2018 has forced Tesla to issue a recall to replace the aforementioned emmc chip. A failure in that chip means the ac controls stop working, as well as some lightning signals and the rear camera. I experienced the failure before Tesla issued a recall, when my vehicle had ~29000mi. Since the vehicle was not safe to drive, I did the repair myself: I bought an emmc chip, I took out the tegra daughterboard from the vehicle and brought it to an specialized electronics shop, they replaced the emmc chip and I copied the contents of the old memory chip into the new one. Once Tesla offered the recall, they also offered a reimbursement for those who had paid out-of-pocket for this repair through an online form. I filled the online form, uploading invoices for the emmc chip and the electronics repair shop work, but they denied my reimbursement. Because of that, I feel that Tesla has not honored the recall in my case.
My 2016 Tesla (manufactured in 01/2017, mileage of 60,400) had the issues with the instrument screen blackout several times. Each time, I lost control of the touch screen, which caused the loss of rear camera view, ac, light and drive control, etc. , especially the fogged up on windshield. This is a dangerous issue. I sent my car to Tesla service center (tsc) in matthews, nc on 1/16/21 and they refused to repair my emmc as my car's instrument screen could restart up and was not completely dead. Andy at tsc told me that I'd have to wait for my car to die completely and touch screen becomes dead and cannot be restarted in order for them to service it under the extended warrantee. Ironically, I picked up my car from tsc this past weekend and on my driving home on highway I-85 south outside charlotte, nc, I lost my touch screen again (see attached pictures). It is outrageous for Tesla to ignore this problem. By asking owners to experience a complete touch screen failure before warrantee services can be activated, Tesla is committing serious crimes by putting drivers in danger!.
Backing up mcu fail backup camera failed almost back on a kid ran behind my car while I was looking down at a disabled screen. Driving to Tesla service department main screen failed due to computer car crippled to minimal safety control. Car now in service Tesla require me to pay $1500 for new mcu2 instead of recalling and replace the defective mcu.
I am sure you are aware of this problem which was just announced for recall - central mcu unit causes black screen which stops majority of car functions to operate. However - here is a new twist! my unit was replaced 2 weeks ago and within 48 hours the problems ongoing black screen problems re-appeared twice (please, see attached image). Brought back the vehicle to Tesla repair center and after a week Tesla's response - "we reset errors and you are all set". These original mcu1 units are flawed and are a danger to drivers because problems can happen any time - while you are driving, backing-up, parking or charging. These issues cannot be rectified on the road and are a total hazard. Replacing one dead mcu1 with another one is simply delaying the inevitable. Tesla is aware of the fundamental design problems which is why they not only introduced a more stable mcu2 but also have been very proactively pushing customers to purchase it.
The heater and defroster stopped working in this cold weather as we were driving home with my sons. They were freezing and cold. I was not able to see clearly rather very foggy windshield due to non-working cabin heater and defroster. This issue had happened to many many Tesla owners, infact Model S like mine and even the brand new Tesla model 3 and model y with just less than 10o miles. This clearly is a huge negligence on the part of Tesla not wanting to fix the issue. However, now right after getting the control touch screen issue addressed, the same day Tesla told me the car is ready and that I can pick it up. This was very negligent on Tesla augorahills service center part. The heater was not working once I started driving the car back home. Tesla should have under safety protocol fixed the very important safety tool such as the climate control and never should have released the car to me to drive last night 12/28/2020. Once I picked up the car and driving back home with my sons we were very cold, to notice the heater is not working/operable. This became more challenging once the visibility was hindered with fogging effect and the same night it was raining here in augorahills area CA and in santa clarita area CA. In many cases where the folks online have discovered the circuit board for the heater core itself which is called the ptc is not properly sealed which allows in moisture and shorts circuits the DC-DC control junction box which holds 3 - fuses. One fuse for a/c , another fuse for heater, third fuse for battery heater. Please please investigate this issue. Tesla tells me the fuses blow in the DC-DC converter causing this. They are aware.
I have been reaching out to Tesla service center repeatedly regarding the emmc unit failure where it has gone completely blank and turns off during my drive several times. I lose all air control, bluetooth, rearview camera, and everything that the main mcu unit controls. I have had this happen when it was very cold outside during the night when I lost visibility due to the fogging inside and no defogging control available. I contacted the service center immediately on December 22, 2020 and made an appointment, which they diagnosed via logs on their end and never agreed to physically diagnose my car in person. They keep claiming that this is an issue that will be addressed in a future firmware upgrade, for which they do not know the timeline at all since the engineers are still working on it, and that this is not a hardware issue. I detailed all the issues I was having where either my screen would freeze up or go black and turn off completely and gave them exact dates/timestamps. Each time they saw there was an error and verified that the logs showed an issue but that this was still not a hardware issue and I have to just put up with this until the firmware upgrade is rolled out. This was their justification for not replacing my unit under the warranty adjustment program, and now I don't see my VIN in the recall database either. I am frustrated and expressed to them several times that I am honestly scared driving the car. I have logged all the messaging conversation with them as proof, and I have videos, pictures showing the failures as they occurred. I have had to pull over several times when these issues occurred to reboot the system before I feel safe to drive again, or I have had to sit in park when I start my car and wait until I reboot before I can start driving.
The multi-media screen when blank and would not reboot in Dec. 2020. It had gone blank before many times over the years (more than I think most cars) but always I was able to reboot the car/computer. I had complained a couple of times at the service center going back a few years and got advice to reboot. Lately it had been happening quite frequently. This time it would not work. I called Tesla and the rep asked if the turn signals worked and I confirmed that they did not. He indicated that this was a safety issue and I should not drive the car and schedule a repair ASAP. Meanwhile, I had already received a notice in the mail of a volunary repair that telsa would do if the screen went out and woudl not rebooot. I was able to get an earlier appointment than the 2 week one that was offered by going into the Tesla service center (as they had advised I could try to do). I was later told that they would not voluntarily repair this for me and I would have to pay. It took them a number of days to get back to me on this. Tesla service center rep and manager indicated that even though the end result of my issue was the same -- no screen, no rear back up camera, no turn signals, no defrost presumably -- my issue was caused by a defective audio chip for the display and not the defective multi-media chip. I had the same safety issues but they required that I pay out of pocket fo the repair. They explained that Tesla had figure out a less expensive way to swap out the mulit media chip but for the audio chip it required a full replacement of the panel or something and that cost them more. I asked about who can I escalate this to and was told I woudl hae to write the legal department. I wrote the legal department on March 12, 2021 to request a refund. They have still not written me back or even acknowledged my letter. Since I wrote my letter to Tesla, my undestanding is that NHTSA has required Tesla to issue a recall to repair a blank screen chip issue.
Touchscreen went blank and would not start up. Has to drive without climate control, defrosting and backup camera for 45 minutes.
Tesla upgraded the infotainment system on my car and as a result the screen's view of the backup camera is now extremely dark when used at night. My wife narrowly avoided hitting a tree the first night. The upgraded system's backup camera is almost useless now and a real safety hazard as one can no-longer see the road or any obstacles when reversing at night. Previously, it was a very well performing system. Tesla has not firm timeline to rectify this issue.

Touch screen will blank, show unusual characters, not respond, exhibit pixillation, stop rear vision camera from displaying, not play radio or music properly and/or intermittantly, and present navigation information improperly. Media computer was replaced last year, but new computer still has those same and other problems. Happens with vehicle in motion, city and highway, randomly. Evidence indicates this may be related to a memory storage hardware chip inside the media computer, being of too little total capacity. Or related to internet signal from manufacture being unreliable, week, intermittent, or defective.
The contact owns a 2016 Tesla Model S. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, the instrument panel inadvertently turned blank and the defroster became inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated he was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that they could not repair the vehicle; however, the vehicle memory was reset. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer who informed the contact that they could not assist and advised him to depress an unknown button on the instrument panel to record the time of occurrence whenever the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred shortly after receiving the recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 21v035000 (back over prevention, visibility, exterior lighting). The contact stated he had not been contacted by the dealer for the recall repair as advised in the recall notification he received. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
The only manual for operation of my car is on screen. The car computer will not load the screen for the manual so we have been unable to access any safety or operation manuals for months. I again took my car to Tesla service this week and the service department said they have no fix. There is no other operation manual and to wait for a firmware update they may help but they are not sure. They refused to replace the mcu. My car is still under full warranty. We suspect the issues with loading the manual is related to failure of the touchscreen/mcu. We have had increasing episodes of our screen going dark requiring us to pull over and not drive until computer reboots. We are unable to use our back up camera when the screen is black. The map features loads very slowly. This is a complex car and we need to be able to look up information regarding safe operation.
On November 23rd 2020 I took my Model S ([xxx]) to Tesla service center lancaster, PA for the Tesla warranty adjustment program which was announced on November 9th and related to malfunctioning touchscreen due to a malfunctioning emmc. This is the result of the service visit; 1) Tesla lancaster, PA service center told me my vehicle is not in the warranty parameters (the Tesla warranty adjustment program stated 8years/100k miles. My car has less than 100k miles and initial delivery was November 24th 2012 - so Tesla lancaster, PA was wrong about this as service date was November 23rd, 2020) 2) Tesla lancaster, PA service center stated "the vehicle is not equipped with the emmc" (a 2012 Model S has to have some type of memory device in it - I would expect it to be an emmc of some sort. The November "warranty adjustment program" stated no-cost repairs for malfunctioning emmc but lancaster, PA service center did not repair my car. ) so in short when I took my car in for November warranty adjustment program related to screen going blank intermittently Tesla would not fix it. My screen is still blank intermittently because Tesla would not repair it and now with the February 2021 NHTSA recall 21v035 released I would like this screen issue fixed properly and permanently. Regardless of what emmc or memory device is in the car the NHTSA safety concerns still apply (unavailability of the rearview camera display, defrost/defog control settings for purposes of ensuring visibility, and exterior turn signal lighting may increase the risk of a crash). I am requesting the mcu be replaced with mcu v2 free of charge because Tesla stated my 2012 Model S does not have the 8gb emmc and because of safety concerns with the current state of the mcu. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Date noted below was the most recent of multiple occurrences. This has happened now at least 6 times beginning in October 2020. While driving, the 17" display in the center of the dash suddenly goes blank. At this point, access to the backup (rear-facing) camera is unavailable.
The main control unit central screen froze and I could not get the car to function for about 7-8 mins. During this time, all major functions of climate control, rear view camera, and the car itself was non-functional. Even when the car functions, there are many times when the computer starts to go slow. Sometimes causing the touch screen to get unresponsive during driving the car. And a few times, the touch screen has even gone dark and non-functional while driving the car. History before this latest incident: note that this has happened many times in the past 1. 5 years. I took the car several times to the Tesla service shop and they used to just tell me to reboot the computer and they managed to reset the computer a couple of times while in warranty. Finally at one point after the warranty expired, the computer completely died earlier this year and Tesla service advised that I need to get the computer mcu replaced at my own expense of about $1200. I did that. Now after about 6 months of the new replaced mcu, the problem has started happening again, just like it happened about 1. 5 years ago. Computer slowing down and now two times, freezing up. I am frustrated at how easily this computer keeps getting into problems and causes potentially safety issues when the computer may go dark while driving or trying to back out of the garage or parking lot without visibility from the rear view camera when it happens. And I'm afraid that this new computer mcu may be on its way again for completely dying a second time in the same year. I am attaching the photo of the state of the car from today's incident (1:15pm 11/16/2020 pacific time). I hope you would investigate this closely since in the past Tesla has been telling me that this is normal wear and tear and I can't accept that this kind of thing is anywhere close to normal behavior for a critical part of the car.
The main/center screen blacks out on my Tesla, which is where all the car controls and back-up camera is viewed. Even when it doesn't completely black out, the back up camera doesn't function as it just stays frozen a lot of the time. Outside of the backup camera issues, all other functions, like turning on or off headlights is also impacted. At other times it seems like it impacts charging the car, which can leave me dead if I cannot charge. Other functions have also been impacted like turning air conditioning and navigation, however not necessarily safety issues. These issues have happened while sitting in my garage trying to leave, charging my car at a Tesla charging station, driving down the freeway or streets. I estimate they have been happening since about 60k miles and have progressively gotten worse.
My Tesla is experiencing the mcu problems outlined in NHTSA ea20-003 from 13 Jan 21 and prior. While in motion, on city streets and highways, and regardless of speed, my vehicle's mcu will spontaneously and at random intervals freeze. This results in loss of heat/cooling, front and rear defrosters, infotainment/gps, adas safety features and convenience, all cameras including backup camera, and turn signal audio indicators. The only resolution is to stop my vehicle, issue a reboot command, and wait up to 10 minutes for systems to restore. Tesla initially denied the issue, but then under Tesla's 9 Nov 2020 "warranty adjustment program" replaced the mcu daughterboard. The replacement did not resolve the issue. Tesla now states the mcu is operating normally but acknowledges that a fix is required in software that will, at an indeterminate time, become available and that until such a fix is released, system reboots should be performed as needed. The mcu continues to freeze while driving with the same symptoms as before the daughterboard replacement. The recommended solution to reboot cannot be performed while driving but must be performed immediately to restore safety functionality. Tesla has offered a $2,500 mcu replacement/upgrade that promises to eliminate the issue since the newer mcu has more storage and an intel atom cpu instead of a slower nvidia cpu. Tesla refuses to replace the existing mcu with a similar part in the meantime, despite initially acknowledging an issue and attempting a fix by replacing the daughterboard, and erasing the system due to possible "corruption" twice.
Central screen (media control unit - mcu) continues to shut down and restart which causes loss of air bag, climate (including DE-fogging), rear camera as well as media controls/gps. Tesla repair indicates that it is a defect that can only be fixed by upgrading to their new mcu2 at a large cost. Replacing with same system will not fix issue. This restarting/rebooting occurs when driving and when idle with no warning. Tesla claims it does not affect driving but it completely shuts down ability to charge, use climate control(including window clearing) and safety controls like airbags. This happens approximately 1x daily when driving car starting after Tesla installed something related to full self driving option.
The car has a defect mcu. All safety feature of the car has been disabled. I can not control climate control. I have lost my rear view camera. I can not make any changes to any setting to my car. I cannot turn off my car and my car is constantly on. I have to pull fuses to shut off certain aspects of my car or my battery will have significant drain while parked. I have brought my car into the a Tesla service center to have the issue repaired. They do not have the parts and keep delaying the repair. The defective mcu is a know issue, I am surprised Tesla will not replace the unit with a non defective unit and will only replace it with refurbished parts. Also, for a know defect that affects the safety of the car, why wont Tesla keep an ample stockpile of boards to repair the issue. All they are doing is pushing the issue further down the link without any intention to properly fix the defective mcu.
My vehicle has the issue with the emmc chip being too small to handle all the logging Tesla was doing and now it's starting to fail. When it completely fails I won't be able to defog the windshield, the heat and ac won't work, the turn signals won't work and I won't be able to charge the vehicle. I got an email from Tesla saying my car doesn't qualify car the warranty adjustment program due to miles but it's within the years. This needs to be a recall regardless of miles. Tesla doubling the amount of logging caused excessive wear on the emmc. The failure is a safety issue.
The media control unit (mcu) in my 2013 Tesla Model S stopped working when I rebooted the car while stationary (commonly needed to restore lost functionality), apparently due to a failure of the embedded multi-media card (emmc) memory. As part of this failure, the turn signals did not work when I later went to drive the car, the passenger airbag defaulted to 'off' (pic attached), and the hvac system (including the windshield defroster) defaulted to an unknown setting and could not be controlled (neither by the dead mcu nor the smartphone application), though the car was otherwise still driveable. Apparently, the oem emmc had limited re-write capability and a relatively high re-write frequency; when it failed, it not only created driving safety hazards, but also cost more than $1,000 to repair what was probably an inexpensive part (under $10) for the oem.
Tesla Model S center touchscreen and associated assistance &infortainment features have become unstable and perform correctly only intermittently. Would have checked more boxes above in terms of systems affected but only allowed 3. Backup camera slow to come up (when working). System shutdowns and reboots occur while driving and parked. Backup camera, climate control, defogging systems, head light control, vehicle lock/unlock, turn signal indicator noice, and all driver assistance such as automatic breaking, adaptive cruise control, navigation etc are affected when this occurs. Variety of errors with entire touchscreen system including lack of response to voice commands, phone connections and audio controls occur nearly every day whether connected to wifi, lte, driving or stationary. Audio system will sometimes change volume when these errors occur or will be unavailable to change to a safer volume. Issues have been occurring for the past year at least but have become much worse over time. Have repeatedly brought up these concerns with manufacturer who states system is performing according to manufacturer standards and/or "known firmware issue". These issues absolutely affect driving safety.
For many months, my Tesla's computer would reboot or just shut down while I was driving. That would stop the defroster, the ability to back up, and multiple driving issue. Tesla suuggestec that I replace the chip and the screen, I paid$2500. They refuse to pay for it despite a recall on the specific issue. It is well documented with tesls.
Mcu shuts down while going down the road. You lose defrost and other major factors that effect safety. Cannot name a particular day but Tesla has this information. I text the tech on 09/03/2020 he told me it is a common problem. If it happens in winter, I will wreck if I cannot see.
