Service Brakes problems |
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the car exhibited a noise from the drivers side (lh) rear brake caliper, car was brought into Tesla for repair and it was determined that "technician notes: technician inspected and verified excessive noise from the driver's side rear brake when applied, as reported by the customer. The noise was caused by a loose brake caliper on the left rear side. The technician replaced the left rear brake caliper and performed a brake fluid bleed/flush to resolve the issue. After the repair, the technician confirmed that the brake noise was no longer present. " Tesla service. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? brake caliper coming loose reduces brake performance and could lead to catastrophic failure and accident. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes, see above. Tesla service center "resolved" the issue by replacing the caliper. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no inspection, beyond Tesla service noted above. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no warning lights, just a clicking sound from the caliper, sounded loose.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while idle waiting for their garage to open, the vehicle began to move forward. The contact attempted to apply the brakes however the brakes failed and the vehicle accelerated forward at a higher speed. The vehicle crashed into their other garage causing the other vehicle to crash into the laundry room inside the home. The Tesla's air bag deployed. The vehicle was towed and deemed totaled. The contact received injury to their neck, knee, and hands. Medical attention was needed. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was 45,417.
While driving at approximately 25 mph on a local street in seattle, wa, my Tesla suddenly engaged the brakes without any apparent reason. The vehicle was not in autopilot or full self-driving mode, and my foot was actively pressing the accelerator pedal at the time. The braking was abrupt and forceful, causing a sudden deceleration. The weather was clear with good lighting. There were no obstacles, vehicles, or road hazards in my path that could have triggered the braking. The unexpected stop was shocking and could have led to a rear-end collision, as there were vehicles behind me.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while at a stop, the brakes were depressed when suddenly the steering wheel ceased to function, and the vehicle started to move forward independently, causing the driver to veer to the right hand side to avoid crashing into a home garage. The contact tried to get back into the street however, the vehicle kept moving forward independently as the contact kept depressing on the brake, causing the contact to crash into a second pole and the vehicle came into a stop. The vehicle was damaged by the fender upon the first impact and was damaged on the front passenger side upon the second impact however, the vehicle was not destroyed. The air bags did not deploy. The contact and his wife suffered from whiplash however, no injuries and no medical assistance were needed. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed from the place of the accident to the contact's home. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 10,100.
While driving in town and pulling into a parking spot, my Tesla slammed on the brakes so hard it was like we struck something. The car was not in fsd or any assistive driving mode unless Tesla changed it without our knowledge. There were no warning or anything before the car slammed on the brakes. I reported the incident to Tesla and they never responded.
When driving home and try to make a left turn, the steering doesn't work and car suddenly speed up even though try to brake, the whole car is out of control, and the car hit my neighbor, and it's extremely dangerous! thank god that no one is hurt. Police came and did a report but didn't say anything about Tesla. After that, I checked the alert history, nothing special, the only alert is remind me that window cleaner is running low. I tried to contact Tesla but failed, no one answer the phone call, no where to report. Everything is too bad.
Safety issue with Tesla's auto pilot braking without cause in the middle of freeway. Many times accidents were about to happen when I intervened and press onto the gas pedal. It seems like there are other complaints and not sure why NHTSA is not doing about it? is Tesla that powerful that government does not want to disturb anything?.
Phantom braking occurred when the adaptive cruise was engaged when a truck entered the road from the right side. The car abruptly slowed when the truck crossed my lane although there was no eminent danger. The car behind us nearly collided with us due to the sudden braking incident. This is the third sudden braking incident; however, the others were related to a bridge or overpass.
Unwanted lane assistance in Tesla Model Y made the car swerve to side. When I tried correcting it, the steering got hard to control and whole car swirled 360 degrees and hit shoulder rail. Brakes didn’t slow the car.
Tail light assemblies on vehicle develop moisture inside of them when it rains. Tesla claims that this is normal and refuses to service the part. The concern is that the electronics inside the light assembly will be damaged by the moisture. This places the burden on the consumer to frequently test and inspect the tail light for an impending failure of the light which may inadvertently occur during driving and result in an accident. In certain instances the amount of moisture that may develop unbeknown to the driver while operating the vehicle, may decrease the light transmission through the light assembly, rendering the function of the tail light to fall out of NHTSA mandated standards for light transmission for the fixture.
Since purchasing the car, I've had issues with the driver's side floor mat sliding and/or flapping. By sliding I mean it slides to the right and then interferes with the braking. By flapping, I mean the left separate portion/flap of the drivers side mat just randomly bends over - again causing interference with braking. I've tried to correct this issue multiple times by repositioning the floor mats. There is no way to secure the mats. I also added this concern to a pre-existing service request as it is quite annoying; however, I was told to just purchase new mats - even though my vehicle is under warranty.
"phantom breaking" issue. When the vehicle is placed in cruise control the vehicle just randomly slams on the breaks; this typically happens when on the freeway/highway at speeds of 55 mph or greater. My wife and I have experienced this extremely dangerous issue from day 1 of taking possession of our Tesla over a year ago. I've reported it to Tesla and also spoken to the repair technicians that work on the Tesla vehicles. They're aware of the issue and haven't done anything to help or even offered to fix the issue. The technicians advised me that they are fully aware of the issue, and Tesla has no fix at this time. This is totally unacceptable and extremely dangerous. We've nearly gotten into a couple of major accidents because of this uncorrected issue.
I was driving at 64 mph utilizing the adaptive cruise control and autosteer (beta). I was in the first of a two lane divided highway with no vehicles within 1000 feet in front of me and several cars passing me on my left. Fortunately, I had both hands on the wheel at the 10 and 2 positions and have good arm strength. Suddenly, abruptly and violently the car took over the steering and braking swerving to the left about a foot or so then applying the brakes hard while simultaneously turning the front wheels about 65 degrees to the right. I believe another vehicle without the Tesla's low center of gravity would surly have rolled over. I was now heading across the breakdown lane towards the guardrail. With great effort I took over control of the steering just 1-2 feet from the guardrail pulling hard left and pressing down on the accelerator (to release the brakes) causing a second roll over feeling. I then turned right to straighten the car out and continued down the highway in the same lane without contacting any objects. I felt the violent nature of the swerving in my lower back and left arm. The car did not want to release the steering to me. I have no evidence other than the experience of my wife and me. I was coming off a white concrete bridge deck with a slight left curve without any lane markings. At the moment of the incident the bridge deck was covered with a large area of black tar. I believe these two factors caused the car to go into some kind of avoidance maneuver. I also believe a lesser capable driver may have been killed.
On November 12, 2023, approximately 3pm, my family and I were traveling eastbound on miramar road, near camino santa fe road, san diego, when we experienced an immediate and sudden braking of our vehicle (2022 Tesla, Model Y), for no apparent reason. There were no warning lights or symptoms that would have exhibited any kind of problem with the vehicle. This sudden braking caused my wife, the driver, to panic and swerve. We were traveling at the posted road speed of about 50mph. Fortunately, there was no traffic and no other vehicles in the vicinity or there might have been an accident. We have not yet reported this incident to Tesla, the police, or anyone else. I am conducting my initial research. Coincidentally, my daughter just experienced a similar incident this morning in her 2017 Tesla, model 3. She will file her own report. After hearing of the problem happening to my daughter I decided we need to file immediate reports and contact Tesla today.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while his wife was parking the vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop as needed. The contact stated that the vehicle collided with a wall and was stopped by a curb. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was diagnosed by the manufacturer and the contact was informed that the accelerator had been depressed inadvertently; however, the contact was adamant that it was brake pedal that was depressed at the time of the failure. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 10,444.
While driving at night with the cruise control on, the emergency braking system engaged. It appeared that the road surface went from dark to a lighter color.
Many occurrences of phantom braking have occurred since I purchased the vehicle several months ago. I was driving on I-5 in California with the cruise control set at 70mph, then changed lanes from left lane to right lane with about 5-6 car links from the semi truck to the rear in the right lane. The emergency braking feature engaged with no vehicles in front of me in either lane for at least 500 yards. The semi truck locked up its breaks to avoid rear ending me. I applied the accelerator as quickly as possible and when I did the semi was approximately 3 feet from crashing into the rear of my vehicle.
While traveling at highway speeds from colorado to texas and from texas back to colorado my car continuously slammed on the brakes without warning while the autopilot(cruise control) was engaged. There was no visible evidence or object in common for each event. What made this dangerous is any untied objects in the car would shift forward and the vehicles behind me would have to slam on their brakes as well. On a few occasions it changed lanes with no cars in front of me.
This issue is pretty scary and I'm still shocked after a couple of hrs. Luckily no damage was caused but I couldn't stop thinking what will happen if I were on the highway. I was waiting for the red light, fully stopped, and waiting to get onto the highway. However, after 2-3 seconds, the car started to move. I was surprised, shocked and trying to stop the car in the meantime. However, the brake stops working and it seems to be very tight and I couldn't step on it to make it stop. Then I was able to turn right into a gas station(very lucky, no car on the right lane) and then I was able to switch to "p" to fully stop the car. I then called the Tesla road assistance and my car was towed and they're checking the issue now. Wanted to log this since this could be very very very dangerous!.
When traveling on cruise control the car will suddenly break in the middle of the road even though there are no vehicles, pedestrians, or threats.
Car randomly braking at highway speeds making it dangerous for vehicles traveling behind us. Will randomly brake on a clear day - no hazardous weather or road constructions. Car will have no warning prior to aggressive braking causing confusion and anxiety to the driver and passenger(s). We thought braking was because of rolling hills but it seems to also do it on flat roads.
On April 28th I was driving to work as usual in my Tesla Model Y , and I am on a local road driving around 40-45 miles speed. I was always maintaining enough stopping distance and on one of the local road, a driver before me stopped abruptly because of garbage trash can came and hit her car. I braked immediately and expected Tesla will stop before only but seems Tesla did not brake till last second and I ended up pulling to the right most side to avoid collision and I ended up hitting pole to save hitting any humans to the best of my ability to save lives. My biggest concern is why Tesla emergency brake did not apply for forward collision? what went wrong? as far as I remember I put the brakes and it did not stop. If this happened on highway on higher speeds, my life would have costed along with others. Can we get this investigated with Tesla? I reached out to them no one cares to respond. . Read more...
I feel Tesla is building cars with non-standard parts and structural issues. 1. I bought a new car and started hearing brakes noises from 6000 miles where as previous car brakes rotors were good till 70k miles. 2. Within 9000 miles, driver side door, a pillar, b pillar, rear seats, display panel has to be either insulated or replaced. I am not sure how this effects car value or vehicle integrity going forward.
Car making sudden braking moves while on trip using cruise control. I tried several different lanes and actions but braking persisted and cruise control discontinued. No damage or injury. Tesla has known phantom braking problem braking. We were at risk to be rear ended. I will contact Tesla next.
My 2022 Tesla Model Y suddenly stopped on the road with a message on the screen saying “pullover safely vehicle shutting down”, but the car stopped immediately and would not move. Another error came up saying “rear motor disabled”. The sudden stopping was very dangerous, and it could have been life threatening had it been on a highway. Luckily for us, I was just pulling the car back from our driveway, but more than half of my car was on the road when the car stopped suddenly with the error message. I can’t imagine what could have happened had I been on a highway with or without auto pilot. We are all very disturbed by this experience as the car just suddenly stopped. Tesla is not safe on the road with this problem. Battery was at 235miles left and the car is in great condition otherwise having driven only 8k miles. Car had to be towed to the service center, but next Tesla service appointment shows almost a month later.
On March 23rd and most recently the car while on cruise control with no cars infront of me emergency (phantom breaking).
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 45-50 mph, a vehicle at a 28 ft. Distance from of him slammed on the brakes. The contact then depressed the brake pedal but the vehicle failed to respond and crashed into the rear of the other occupied vehicle. The forward collision sensor warning light then illuminated. The air bags did not deploy. There was no injuries sustained. There was no police report filed. The contact was able to continue driving. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 32,000.
I was driving my Tesla Model Y on 02-26-2022 with my wife in the passenger seat. We were on our way to pick up our son and his two friends from the movie theater in Lincoln square north, bellevue square, washington. As we entered the Lincoln square parking garage approximately around 6 30pm and turned into the narrow passage leading down to the several floors of parking lots at approximately 5 miles an hour, the Tesla on its own, and to my alarm and surprise suddenly picked up tremendous speed and went careening down the parking driveway and slammed to a stop into the concrete boundary of the pillar on parking level p2. The distance travelled from start to finish was to the best of my very rough guesstimate 60ft to 70 ft. My repeated attempts at slamming the brakes did not stop the car. The airbags deployed. •with the impact the car was completely totaled •the front right wheel broke free and hit the rear fender of a car parked in the parking garage in p2. - no one in the parking garage was impacted my wife was in great pain and very shaken. She was helped out of the car by a good samaritan. Lincoln square security reached us almost immediately. We called 911 and the fire brigade and police came to the accident site within minutes. The police inspected the vehicle and filed a case report. Post the accident, I took my wife to the er. She was badly bruised with the impact of the air bags and seat belt restraint. We continue to get treated to manage the pain and the bruising. The experience was a horrific one and my wife has been badly impacted …it will take time for her to begin driving again. We have not been contacted by Tesla regarding this accident as of March 9, 2023.
“phantom braking” episode: while driving on a two lane freeway using Tesla branded autopilot (not full self drive) the car automatically and suddenly braked, reducing speed approximately from 70 mph to below 50 mph before manual intervention. This happened with no car in front or behind and while approaching a car in the lane to the right while also approaching an overpass. I also noticed there was a patch of uneven colored pavement beneath the overpass. One passenger in the front seat was thrust into her seatbelt in the event.
I was driving on the freeway going 70 mph with adaptive cruise control enabled, and on two occasions the car braked quite strongly even though there were no cars in front of me. The first time it may have been because the freeway led into a curve, and the second time the car was headed into a tunnel.
While driving on the freeway into a tunnel during bright conditions while on autopilot, the car unexpectedly braked heavily on a straight road, even though there were no debris or vehicles in front. Had to take immediate action since cars were driving around me. Similar event occurred when driving at night, luckily no cars were around me. During rain, automatic wipers did not activate. Required 2 actions to deploy wipers: pressing button on the turn-signal stock, then finding the menu on the screen to set wiper speed while driving in dangerous conditions. Another option is to use the voice command, however at times it takes 2-4 attempts to activate.
Seat belts are hitting the door and seat. Model y car seat belts are not installed properly. As per Tesla regenerative braking supposed stop the car but car is rolling. As per Tesla tech regenerative doesn’t work until the battery is heated up. They never provided this to customers and this could result in accidents for people who rely on regenerative braking.
It was snowing and I was driving down a hill going at least 5 miles an hour because there where at 10 cars in front of me. When I went to break the car, the breaks didn’t work and I slid the hill hitting to vehicles. The breaks would skip and wouldn’t lock.
Driving down road going about 46-50 mph at about 6:45pm tonight and the car suddenly slammed on brakes. Brakes locked, but thank goodness car behind me wasnt following close. My head/neck was jerked hard enough to cause headache and terrible soreness. I am very shaken. Came home and told my husband, took ibuprofen for my headache. He googled the problem, found this website. We are very concerned, since we own 2 Teslas and it seems people have the same complaints on both models we own.
While driving at freeway speeds, a vehicle cut me off. In order to avoid a collision, I pressed the brake pedal causing all brakes to lock up and the vehicle skidded. I felt the vehicle starting to hydroplane sideways over the dry surface and I heard the screech of the tires. I released the brake pedal, I felt the tires regain traction and I corrected the direction of travel. It was apparent that the abs system did not function as intended. I contacted Tesla service and they sent me a message stating that my vehicle needs to be repaired. I am still waiting for the estimate so I do not have specifics as to what needs to be repaired, but since they are having me take the vehicle to their shop, it appears that it can not be repaired over the air. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure.
I was driving on I-70 in colorado, heading westbound. I had the vehicle in basic "cruise control" speed mode. No autosteer or anything like that. Our of the blue, the car jammed on the brakes on its own, as if it was about to hit something. However, there were no vehicles in the area. It was a significant reduction in speed. Probably from 65-35. Luckily, there wasn't anybody behind me. It was scary, to say the least. There were no warnings prior to the episode. I believe that this is referred to as "phantom brakes". Thank you!.
The contact stated he was an employee at the Tesla factory and while driving a 2022 Tesla Model Y the tires slid on the water-saturated floors. The vehicle ended up crashing into the metal trim of the wall and the wall itself. The contact was unable to stop, as well as, the cameras and sensors software called Tesla vision had failed to display and detect the surroundings near the vehicle to avoid a crash. The airbags did not deploy due to the vehicle not being calibrated at that time. The left side of the vehicle and wall had damage. The contact received neck, upper back, front waist area, and calf injuries. Medical attention was received. A police report was not filed however a report with the company had been filed. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. There was no mileage being recorded on the vehicle at this time due to it not being calibrated.
Car was at freeway speed (~70mph) and on cruise control, and out of nowhere the brakes were applied by themselves very abruptly. I was almost rear ended on the freeway as a result.
Unexpected braking. This occurred several times on a long trip. Each time we we're on a bridge or other structure close to the roadway.
While adaptive cruise control, braking occurs unexpectedly. Might be related to hills, seems somewhat repeatable. Scares the snot out of you when you are doing 80 miles per hour on autopilot/cruise control and your car just stars braking.
Driving on the interstate going 85 in autopilot with no other cars around and the car slammed on the brakes. Nothing in the road.
Phantom breaking happened 5 times interstate 8 car slowed braked from 84mi to 55 mi no worning. Nothing on road close to car. Clear highway.
While driving west on i70 today phantom braking has occurred at least 5 times. This has happened when using adaptive cruise control and autopilot. Not safe!!.
Model y slamming on break for no particular reason when hazardous lights are on. Luckily no car was behind me.
Our Tesla was phantom braking on the highway on a recent trip to a neighboring state. The braking was unpredictable, sudden and aggressive. This happened when we used cruise control. Each time it happened, I was in the passenger seat and thrown forward. We quickly realized this could cause a fatal collision. We began limiting the use of cruise control to long stretches of highway when no other vehicles were behind us. This happened both on the way to our destination and on the way back home.
I was driving on a stretch of I-15 in utah using the traffic aware cruise control when the car suddenly applied the brakes by itself. I was traveling at approximately 80mph when this happened. Scared me half to death. I wasn't sure what happened and thought it was just an anomaly. Later I was using the auto pilot traffic aware cruise control feature and the same thing happened. That's when I figured out it was an issue with the cruise control/auto pilot. When I was stopped, I looked up that this is a frequent issue with the Tesla Model Y, known as phantom braking. No one at Tesla mentioned this issue as I went through the purchase process, or when I picked up the car in Dec. 2021. I wasn't aware of that before and feel like I could have been in a serious accident. I felt lucky that I wasn't.
Tesla does not provide power to the aux pin on the standard 7 pin connector for towing. This means that the vehicle will not keep a 12v battery on a trailer charged up at all times. In case of a breakaway situation, there will be no power to the brakes and thus the trailer will not stop safely. Tesla changed to a 16v battery and has refused to step down the voltage for towing purposes. This is extremely dangerous when they advertise the Model Y and x as towing up to 3500 and 5000 lbs respectively and do not advertise the fact (outside the manual, where it must be inferred) that there is no power on the aux pin. The 7 pin connector is a standard and Tesla is not adhering to it.
I have experienced "phantom braking" with this vehicle from the time I received it in Feb '22. There have been over 20 incidents. I do not feel safe using the cruise control in traffic or when any car is following me. It could very easily cause an accident. When cruise control is on, it will randomly apply emergency braking. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of vehicle following me is at risk because the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly applies emergency braking. I have not tried to address the issue with Tesla. There are never any warnings that this may happen. This is very unsafe and with the number of vehicles with this known issue, I hope the NHTSA applies pressure to Tesla to fix the problem ASAP. I do not feel safe using the cruise control and likewise it is not a safe situation for others on the road to have these vehicles driving with this issue.
Alert was coming randomly while driving the car about several safety systems being disabled automatically without any audible notifications. Alert clears up after the car is locked for several minutes. Below is the alert message. . Automatic emergency braking disabled automatic vehicle hold disabled traction control disabled stability control disabled cruise control disabled this makes the car suddenly unsafe to drive if you are not paying attention to the screen. I have been on the road driving car at 60-70mph several times when this happened. This can turn in to an accident. I provided the information and created a service appointment at Tesla which took a month before they can get me a scheduled appointment. Tesla fixed the issue with below note after further review. "a loose connection in the area of the steering gear was causing severe communication problems between the stability controller and the autopilot computer. " resolution date: 11/18/2022 report date: 9/5/2022.
While on a cross country road trip, our 2022 Tesla Model Y has repeatedly slammed on the brakes at highway speeds with nothing in front of us. Most times have been cresting hills, but one time it was on straight road with, fortunately, no other cars near us.
In addition to the car only achieving 65% of its actual miles range claimed the cars operating system will freeze while driving (once every 3 days on average), forcing the driver to reboot the car while driving (hold both scroll wheel buttons on steering wheel). This takes away the ability to read the speedometer, to use indicators and basically all of the functions of the car. The rear view camera display also fails about 10% of the time which I have recorded. The car will also slam on the brakes while on the highway, driving in the rain on autopilot to allow a merging dhl van into my lane instead of switching to the left lane as advised by dot/dmv and I recorded this on dashcam yesterday coming back from nasa. It is a daily issue that passengers in my uber cannot buckle their seatbelts because the buckle is too low into the seat for them to easily find, in some cases passengers get disgruntled and I am forced to park and wait until they can buckle themselves sometimes taking over 5 minutes. The driver assistance features do not always work and also alert me and my passengers when it is unnecessary making it seem more like a gamble than a safety feature; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes when it shouldn't. The false claims and inconsistencies are unlike any other vehicle I've ever driven. Tesla is a criminal enterprise acting purely in self interest and preservation to maximize profits and must be held accountable and to the standards of all other vehicles in the USA driving on our roads. I am appauled at the way Tesla has silenced me (blocked emails and blocked my ability to schedule service) and accused me of trying to cheat on my wife with the non-existent female Tesla employees on my bbb complaint which the bbb closed out claiming they solved it when Tesla didn't address a single complaint, just attacked my character publicly also known as slander. Also 250kw superchargers only charge at 50kw after preconditioning without other cars chargingfu.
Multiple episodes of phantom braking when the car is in cruise control and autopilot. There can be a completely open road and it happens. Doesn’t seem to be any reason. We’ve been trying to pay attention if there are shadows, construction barrels, bridges, etc that it could be detecting, but it’s never the same. It is very dangerous and needs to be fixed.
08/27/22 3:37 pm while driving on i25 north to wheatland wy at 80 mph the adaptive cruise control slammed on the brakes. The weather was sunny, there were no other cars within sight in front of the Tesla or to the rear and the pavement was dry. Thinking there must be something that hit a sensor I resumed the journey. The same braking malfunction occurred two more times so I pulled into a rest area and searched to find automatic emergency braking and turned off that feature. Once more I drove with the adaptive cruise control. It did it again. Had there been a semi or other heavy vehicle behind me there would have been a likely fatal crash. The telsa braked so hard I thought the airbags would deploy. This is a very serious safety issue that must be immediately addressed. I returned home and within the week sold the Model Y.
The autopilot and automatic emergency braking systems implemented in 2021 and 2022 model 3 and Model Y vehicles are defective in that they can engage randomly when no safety hazard is present. This issue has been dubbed “phantom braking”.
Driving on a highway, after passing a semi I changed to the right lane. I had traffic aware cruise control on. With no one in front of me, the car suddenly braked. I had to step on the accelerator to avoid being rear-ended by the semi. This is 3rd "phantom braking" event in past 2 weeks.
While driving from austin texas to san deigo cal. Had on at least a dozen occasions sharp braking while vehicle was in cruise control. Most of these sharp braking incidents occurred in very light traffic, sometimes no traffic on the interstate hwy. Our speed would drop as much as 20 mph in an instant.
When I drive my Tesla Model Y in autopilot, I have noticed phantom braking atleast 5 times. That too when driving at 70mph it drastically reduces the speed like a sudden break. I have reported the issue to representatives but did not get any satisfactory reply.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? experienced phantom braking, especially during dry weather with sun, where there are the mirage of water shimmering across the road. This happen too often when mirage are present. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? it get to the point I would rather disable its safety feature and drive manually. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? none. Note the driver is deaf, so they are also poor in visible warning compared to audio warning.
We are on a cross country trip on open highway and it randomly applies the breaks hard at times for no apparent reason.
I took delivery of a Tesla y in February 2022. About a half dozen times since, I've been driving on the highway using cruise control/auto pilot and the car will randomly slam on it's brakes, so hard that loose objects in the car are flying to the front. There was no warning prior or any of these incidents. Thankfully I have not had cars directly behind me when this occurred. . . If there had been someone behind me they would have absolutely hit me. I have not yet contacted Tesla.
Hello, my name is [xxx] and I had the 2022 Tesla Model Y performance. I had an accident on [xxx]. Car just took control itself, we hit the tree. It was in a residential area, it happened so fast that I could not react to prevent it. After we hit the tree, the car caught fire, it was a nightmare for me, I had my best friend with me at the time of the accident in the front passenger seat. Both of us were unconscious, by the time I got awake, the car was in flames, my friend was still unconscious but then he got awake after I tried with the local neighbor to pull him out from the car. Unfortunately my friend passed away after an accident in 5 hours. I had autosteer assistance on my car as a subscription. Plus my car had a problem with the side cameras, from time to time it was giving me errors - door pillar error message. Cops were trying to get information from the car, but according to Tesla representative my car was out of network from June 30, 2022. And I never got any notifications that my car is out of network. I have a case against me vs state of new jersey, the prosecutor's office charged me with vehicle manslaughter, at the time of accident I gave a statement to the police officer, in December 12, 2023 it was nationwide recall on Tesla cars, and this recall it was exactly for the same problem what I described to the police officer at the time of accident, so my problem is, I can't retrieve any information from Tesla regarding what happened at the time of accident, due to Tesla had my car out of network for 25 days prior. I can't prove my innocence because of that I'm facing serious charges right now. My complain is about my car being out of Tesla network for 25 days, without proper notification on the app or email, while my car was operated everyday on the daily basis. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Phantom braking — the car brakes for no reason in navigate on autopilot as well as adaptive cruise control. The phantom braking is particularly extreme on i80 through nevada and us rte 95 through oregon, which is a two-lane road.
2022 Tesla was in auto-pilot mode, not fsd. Phantom breaking occured on July 6 in sacramento on business 80, two incidents about 20 minutes apart. First incident, vehicle suddently slowed from about 65 to 30. Second incident, vehicle suddently slowed from about 65 to 10 (almost stopped) where we almost rearended. The driver was extremely angry as evidenced when he changed lanes to pass us (can't blame him), as Tesla began to reaccelerate. I have heard of phantom breaking incidents, but twice in one short trip where the second had the potential for a serious accident would indicate to me that Tesla needs to take action. I hope you relay this to them.
While driving my Tesla Model Y sudden braking happened numerous times. During the last event a large semi-trailer truck was extremely close to my rear bumper felt as if I was going to be rear ended and the semi was beeping the horn thinking I was placing the brakes. This is very concerning to me. This is a safety concern due to system malfunction.
My 2022 Tesla y brakes suddenly when I am not expecting it to. This has happened many times on the freeway in traffic at high speed and often with large trucks behind me. I am concerned that I will get rear-ended by a much larger vehicle. This unexpected sudden braking has also occurred in city traffic. My car does not have full auto pilot- it has the standard driver assist that can't be removed from the car. I have tried to get help from my local Tesla dealer but the service dept has been unwilling and uninterested in providing any service for this issue.
I was traveling on the highway in indiana between bloomington and indianapolis. I started to experience the car braking for no apparent reason. As I continued on my trip and reached a top speed of 75 mph, the car suddenly and without warning slammed on the brakes! it took me a minute to react and regain control of the car. I absolutely would have been rear-ended if anyone had been nearby or possibly caused a chain reaction accident. I am extremely lucky and now very remiss about purchasing this car. I luckily had a passenger who looked up what was happening. We turned off the emergency braking for the remainder of the trip but it is not something you can turn off permanently. You have to turn it off every single time you start a new trip. I wanted this incident reported so Tesla is forced to deal with this issue immediately.
The car was delivered to me today. It has 15 miles on the odometer. The brakes do not work. I almost crashed into a home. Extreme safety concern. The next device appointment is July 20th. I will wait for them to diagnose the issue. Very concern this auto manufacturer is delivering faulty brand new products to consumers.
The car system been keep crash cause it screen frozen and while crash it will no speed display no ac no warning no back up camera and important after lifting gas pedal the car will not reduce speed as before and I almost crash the car. Been report the problem to Tesla since early July and the keep cancel my appointment said it need wait for updates but can’t provide the date. I requested get the loaner while they can’t solve the problem but they denied and cancel my service appointment . It dangerous to drive and very unpredictable when the system crash while driving. While driving expect the car will reduce speed but it not and no speed will display will cause over speed limit. The the pre collision system will not work at all and the system crash every few minutes and screen will shut off it self. While system crash will need triple amount of force the press on brake pedal to stop the car when it on high speed it impossible to respond to stop at short distance.
When I was on a road trip I had my 2022 Tesla Model Y in autopilot and with out warning it gave myself and my passengers whip lash because it brakes for no reason. On the course of my road-trip it happened more times than we could count. One horrific time was when a white Cadillac escalade was tailgating me the Tesla threw on the brakes heavily and almost caused the car behind me to hit me. This is very dangerous and the other driver started threatening me and my family harm. I need Tesla to fix this issue with a great sense of urgency. This is extremely dangerous and in my case we were lucky to not sustain any physical harm or death but the chance was and is still great if they do not fix this issue with autopilot braking randomly not for just myself and my family but countless of other Tesla owners that are affected by this scary unsafe issue.
Driving with adaptive cruise on and car will brake suddenly.
I was pulling out of the garage and I heard disturbing sound coming from the bottom it sounds like something is breaking. I thought I drove over something like water bottle but a lot louder. So I stopped halfway through the garage and looked under, nothing visible looked around each tire nothing, checked the monitor screen no warning, nothing, so I thought maybe the sound is not coming from the car and I decided to continue, pulling out and made it to the drive way and still a lot of noise sounds like big crack sound. I parked and checked the tires nothing. Looked under the front bumper, it looks like something is a little out of shape but it wasn’t clear. Then I realized I can’t drive like this so I started to drive forward the noise was very loud, barely made it to the original parking spot then I got out of the vehicle, checked again and a lot of stuffs hanging near front wheels, looks like something is wrong with the suspension, the car has only 2000 miles on it. The worst part is that there is not a single warning sign on that big screen which supposed to show if something is not in order. If it wasn’t for the unpleasant noise, my 7 month pregnant wife would have been driving in the middle of a freeway in less than 5 minutes. I am still shaking from how close we were to be a real danger to ourselves and to other drivers on the roads. We got lucky that it happened right before we get to the roads. I want a full safety and defects inspections on the 2022 Model Y.
Driving on an empty highway at 75mph. Brakes engaged and alarm sounded. Slowed to 55. We almost hit the dashboard. Then car stopped braking and drove fine. Happened twice in two trips.
Phantom braking. I was on auto pilot on the freeway traveling at 75 mph. All of a sudden the car did an automatic hard brake and the car started to veer toward the center divider. The car only had 64 miles and was brand new. This was the first time I had used autopilot and had been on the freeway. There was a truck on my right and it was a 2 lane freeway. Nobody has inspected the car.
We rented this vehicle for 2 days, in which we experienced phantom braking thrice. It was seemingly the forward collision detection. The first time was after a car had fully crossed the highway at a reasonable distance ahead of us. The second time was when it detected cyclists along the shoulder, with no danger of collision. The third time was as we approached a sharp turn in the highway, where a semi-truck was parked/stationary on the shoulder mid-turn. In each of these instances there was no need to slow the vehicle, but the car suddenly braked almost to a complete stop. Cars around and behind us were surprised and we were forced to swerve. It is unclear if the brake lights engage during these sudden phantom braking incidents.
"phantom braking" has been an issue in which it randomly brakes while using cruise control. We have been on flat, wide open roads with no cars or visible obstacles in front of us. We are concern as we have an infant and it jerks everyone forward when it happens. We are on high alert especially when someone is behind us because it might cause an accident. This must be immediately corrected by Tesla.
We were driving on interstate. We had cruise control engaged but had accelerated to pass a vehicle. The car rapidly braked with no warning, to at least 10 miles lower than our cruise control speed. There were no warnings associated with this rapid braking and there were no risk factors around us at all. This is fortunate, as if someone had been close behind us an accident could have very easily happened. -- this has happened once before, while driving on interstate. Very startling and inexplicable. -- both times have hit the accelerator to get back to a speed appropriate to flow of traffic.
While driving on the freeway at around 4pm my Tesla broke hard on the freeway without me asking it to. The hard braking incident occurred while using autopilot on the freeway.
I have encountered several "phantom" braking events while driving my Tesla y in auto-pilot mode, all on the freeway or highway. This most recent event occurred while returning from las vegas. In each case, something dark across the road triggered the event. In two cases it was dark asphalt strips that were perpendicular to the highway. In the other case, it was a dark shadow of a bridge across the highway. I assume the car's auto-pilot system thought these things were solid objects and therefore braked. I captured each phantom braking event on the car's built-in camera and am enclosing the screen captures.
My car, while in autopilot, panic brakes for no reason. We took a trip cross country and this happened at least 20 times at highway speeds. I had to have my foot over the accelerator to be ready to overtake the panic braking when it happened. . Read more...
Experienced sudden braking at 79mph on interstate highway while using auto pilot.
Autopilot phantom braking while using cruise control, adaptive speed control. Occurred 9 times on a single drive. Often with no other cars, or anything in sight - in death valley to be specific. Instant breaking would occur, sometimes drastic, at times might have brought car to a complete stop if I'd not taken over control. We are now very reluctant to even use cruise control. This occurs with either adaptive speed control or enhanced auto-pilot. Fsd is not enabled.
On a recent road trip we used cruise control for the first time and had multiple incidents of phantom braking. These were sudden application of brakes completely at random and repeated for no apparent reason. . We haven't used cruise control since due to the possible danger of getting rear ended. Apparently this has been reported for a year or more and currently is being nvestigated. We have had no word from Tesla warning us about this issue.
Car set at 75 mph cruise control, brakes unnecessary with no obstructions or danger, and reduces speed to 45 mph while having adaptive cruise control active. Tesla response = this is a beta feature. Read your manual. This is incredibly dangerous and a rear end collision waiting to happen. I feel like this is reckless and to just blame it on being beta is borderline criminal.
On April 15, 2022, I experienced two incidents of sudden braking while in cruise control on a round-trip four-hour drive in my Tesla Model Y. I was driving at between 60 and 65 miles an hour on a four-lane road. Between the incidents, I reached my destination and the car was parked for several hours. In each case, there was no car in front of me in my lane, and in one case, as I remember, there were no cars in front of me anywhere near. The car slowed suddenly by 10 to 15 miles an hour, as if I had taken my foot off the accelerator. I applied pressure to the accelerator to return to cruising speed. In each case, the road was dry and the sky was largely cloudless. There was no warning. I bought the car new in January 2022. I have not had the car inspected since the incident. I did investigate on the internet and learned that there have been many other such incidents with the Tesla y and 3 models. I understand that the ntsb has an open investigation on the subject. The problem is very serious. Fortunately, there was no one traveling close behind me, or the sudden slowdown might have caused the following car to crash into me.
When operating my vehicle in adaptive cruise control or autopilot, my Model Y has continuously had incidents where it randomly slams on the brakes as if it’s attempting to avoid an obstacle. To my frustration, there is nothing in the road and I am slammed back in my seat. What I fear the most is that a vehicle following behind me could potentially rear end me due to this braking issue. I just took a 450 mile road trip, and this incident happened a dozen times along the way. I read online and this appears to be a trend with Tesla and I want to make sure this “phantom braking” issue is reported.
When driving on a two lane highway today, I had 3 episodes of the car applying the brakes to suddenly decrease speed when a vehicle was in the oncoming lane. I also had another event of emergency braking when a car was crossing the highway on a perpendicular road far ahead of my car. When I reached that road, the car had already safely crossed. Cruise control is unusable on the Tesla because of these events.
This car indiscriminately applies the brakes in a very aggressive manner on all manner of roads including multiple lane divided highways. It will regularly slow from 75 mph to under 50 mph while driving on interstate highways for no reason whatsoever. I have come close to being rear ended at least 5 times and on a recent trip to arizona and back. One incident nearly caused a multiple car accident. This is an unacceptable fault and is very very dangerous. Tesla needs to be forced to address this problem immediately. My car does this all the time. If you want to come drive it just say the word.
My car has problems with uncommanded slowdowns while cruise control and/or autopilot are active. The vehicle will slow down suddenly in any number of predictable and unpredictable situations. The extent of the slowdown is variable as well. It can range from a slight “hiccup” in the speed, which is simply unpleasant, to a significant, rapid decrease. (like, more than 10mph, very quickly. ) this can occur at various times of day, though I don’t drive much at night (it has happened then as well). Driving on any two lane road with a vehicle following at any time is risky and in my opinion hazardous. Particularly if the vehicle following is even remotely close. If the following vehicle isn’t paying attention and the car decides to brake for whatever reason (and apparently there are lots) that’s a collision waiting to happen. I have refused to use my car’s cruise control system since shortly after I got the car due to this issue. I try it every once in a while to see if it’s any better, but it hasn’t made it more than 5 miles before another event. Not only is it a terrible experience for passengers, it’s unpleasant to have to keep my foot above the accelerator pedal to react to the stupid braking the car will do. Some of the predictable things that cause braking can include, not limited to - oncoming vehicles on a 2-lane (especially trucks, and almost everything bigger than an f150), many larger mailboxes, and in some parts of my commute - simply nothing at all. I don’t know what the car sees, but it brakes. Less predictable are the times it will brake for shadows. Can’t use cruise control when there’s trees shadowing the road. It is absurd. No vehicle this day and age should risk causing an accident because of random shadows!! to be clear, I’ve never had a problem in a divided highway. Everywhere else, though, forget it.
While using adaptive cruise control on the highway, the car applied the brakes on its own. There were no cars in front of us, nor on the side of us. We were very lucky there was no one behind us or we would have been rear-ended. We went from 70 mph to 65 mph in a matter of an instant. I was able to apply the gas to stop the braking. There were no warnings or messages ahead of the incident.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle it was later discovered that the front hood lid had erroneously opened. The contact indicated that the failure had occurred on multiple occasions. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. Also, the contact stated that the regenerative braking system had malfunctioned causing the braking distances to be extended while attempting to stop the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not determined. The failure mileage was 6,000.
Random, sudden braking while in cruise control (auto pilot mode). There is no object or other vehicle in the way when this happens. It has happened many times starting in December 2021 in a brand new vehicle and happened most recently 3 days ago. Every time it happens it is scary. Very disturbing and renders cruise control unusable. No word from Tesla that this is fixable or even a priority. Please make telsa address this serious safety hazard before someone is hurt or killed. Thank you.
While driving at highway speeds the vehicle will brake suddenly. This has happened more than eight times in a single 100 mile trip. Potential for crash at high speeds and very unnerving for the driver and passengers.
I experienced two incidents of phantom braking while making a round trip from reno nevada to sacramento California on interstate 80 on March 3, 2022. The first incident (approx. 10:15 am) occurred west bound and west of donner summit. My speed was approximately 70 mph traveling in the right lane. Several big rig trucks were parked on the shoulder. There were no cars directly in front of me and one car slightly ahead in the left lane. Autopilot was engaged. Suddenly the car braked violently and reduced speed to under 40 mph. I retained control and continued driving. In the second incident (approx. 1:30 pm) my wife was driving east on I 80 (with autopilot engaged) at approximately 70 mph. As she attempted to change lanes to allow a car to pass to our left, emergency braking again was violently engaged. The car behind us had to take very quick evasive action to avoid a collision. A high speed collision was extremely narrowly avoided. There were no vehicles for hundreds of yards ahead of us nor any parked along the highway and no obstacles on the highway. At the spot where the braking occurred the highway began to slope upward, possibly creating the illusion of an obstacle. .
I was driving my 2022 Tesla Model Y south on I-95 near the intersection with I-10, going approximately 65 miles per hour in the middle of a clear day. I did not have cruise control, autopilot, anything on-- just driving normal. No warning indicators. All software updates were up to date. I was in the far right lane and, at that section of the road, there is a large distance between the oncoming traffic headed north. There were no oncoming cars anyhow. And the car just suddenly slammed on the breaks. I didn't go into a skid but it was enough to jerk my body forward to where my torso hit the steering wheel. I pressed down on the acceleration as fast as I could. If there would have been a car or truck behind me, I would have been really hurt, especially if there would have been passengers in the back. I was shaking. If anything remotely like that happens again, I will sell the car that same day.
When in traffic aware cruise control the car would brake suddenly for no apparent reason. I’m not sure whether it is available for inspection upon request. Sudden unexplained braking could be a safety hazard if it occurs when a vehicle is travelling behind. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service station. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were not any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This problem occurred at least 6 times when travelling on the highway between lake charles, la and san antonio, TX on 2/27/2022 and 24 times when travelling on the highway between san antonio, TX and las cruces, nm on 2/28/2022. We observed that the frequency of these sudden unexplained braking occurrences increases when the light is filtered through partly sunny/partly cloudy skies. In bright cloudless conditions or in overcast conditions the unexplained braking does not happen. On 3/1/2022 the day after we had 24 occurrences we drove from las cruces, nm to scottsdale, az in bright cloudless conditions and we didn’t experience any sudden braking.
In late February we were driving up California state highway 5 at approximately 70-75 miles per hour. There were no cars within half a mile, and we had turned on adaptive cruise control. Suddenly, there was a strong brake applied for no apparent reason, which was very disturbing for the entire family. We have never turned on adaptive cruise control since. This appears to be an instance of "phantom breaking" according to our online research.
The vehicle will brake while utilizing the autosteer and cruise control features. I do not have the advanced autopilot feature enabled on my vehicle. The vehicle will brake suddenly at highway speeds requiring me to take control of the vehicle immediately. This is concerning and may result in an rear end collision.
Application of emergency braking without warning when tacc cruise control system engaged. Yes, vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle was driven yesterday for its 1st longer mileage trip since purchase in February, 66 miles on two lane highway and interstate. When the Tesla tacc system (cruise control) was engaged the braking system abruptly applied with no warning and without reason. This occurred approximately 6 times during the drive and only while cruise control was active. Two instances appeared to have been caused by on coming vehicles in opposing direction in the other lane. One at lower speed, 25 mph, a bus in the opposite lane. Our vehicle applied the brakes hard enough that the car almost came to a complete stop. There was no vehicle directly behind but if there were we would likely have been hit. The 2nd was an oncoming semi truck on a two lane highway at approx 65 mph. Our vehicle again with no warning slammed on the brakes. At this speed we felt some difficulty gaining control of the vehicle. Again, no vehicles were directly behind so we avoided another possible collision. The remaining 4 instances presented no possible reasons for application of the brakes. Each time this occurred without warning. This drive sees relatively low traffic levels thankfully, as this issue would likely cause collision with following vehicles not being able to stop fast enough from random hard braking at highway speeds. Our regular driving occurs on more traffic filled roads. Due to this issue the system cannot be used as an accident would be eminent. Vehicle has not yet been inspected by the dealer or independent service center. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. No warning lights or messages occur prior to this failure.
Today I was driving to work using the adaptive cruise control and the car applied brakes for no valid reason, this sudden deceleration could have caused an accident.
At highway speeds using adaptive cruise or autopilot, vehicle suddenly brakes and veers towards the shoulder of the road. This occurs when a large vehicle such as a bus or semi is approaching from the opposite direction. Emergency break came close to causing a rear end collision today 2/17/22. Contacted Tesla service for investigation and repair.
I purchased the vehicle on 2/12/2022. In the first six days of ownership, the vehicle suddenly braked on two occasions while using cruise control.
While traveling on i81, at dusk, on 2/16/2022, the car automatically, with no apparent reason, momentarily applied the brakes, causing the car to veer sharply to the left - this occurred twice on a 20 mile trip - once while passing a semi, once while driving under an overpass - autopilot was with ‘distance speed control’ on - car is new with less than 300 miles (purchased on 2/11) - because to this, I consider the car to be unsafe to drive with autopilot ‘on’.
When in auto pilot mode, the car would suddenly brake for no apparent reason. I was afraid I would get hit from behind. I reported this to the local Tesla dealer. He acknowledged others have had the same problem. There is nothing they could do now.
Phantom breaking happens consistently when cruise control is engaged. The phantom breaking happens every day and multiple times a day. Whether it be on a multi lane freeway or a two lane highway, serious breaking occurs and often can be quite dangerous when cars are following behind our vehicle.
Car phantom braked when in a 2 lane highway when there was an approaching car in the opposite lane. No danger of the other car colliding but Tesla braked for no reason. Happened multiple times while using autopilot.
Phantom braking while using autopilot (cruise control), my Tesla Model Y without warning slows the car from the speed limit (60mpg) down to half the speed or less. This usually occurs when the is a large approaching vehicle (semi or box truck) or when going around corners with a solid background (trees or large rocks). I assume this is because the car believes a collision is imminent and is trying to avoid it. Once the vehicle is past the car continues as if nothing occurred. The first time this happened was very scary and I ad no idea why it happened. Now I keep my foot resting above the gas pedal which keeps the car from severe braking action if you depress pedal right away. I mostly do not use cruise control on two lanes roads with lots of traffic for safety reasons, especially if there's someone following too close. My last trip of 60+ miles this probably occurred half a dozen times until I turned it off.
Multiple occurrences of phantom braking phenomenon with cruise control engaged. Happened while driving into setting sun or at night. The car seemed to confuse shinny spots in the road (ice patches and tar repairs particularly at the crest of a hill or bridge) as a vehicle and apply the brakes. The braking was usually very aggressive and in one case almost resulted in a high speed rear end. Adjusting control parameters as available form the software did not have any effect. Have not had the car inspected at this point. No warning was given by the system but you can see a phantom image appear on the virtual display during the episode.
I was driving with the autopilot engaged and the car unexpectedly slammed on the brakes. This happen 2 more times and I disengaged the autopilot and did not turn it back on.
Multiple occasions while using autopilot on 2 lane roads when semi trucks are coming in the opposite direction the Tesla will brake hard saying impending accident when the semi is staying in its lane …. It happens about 80 percent of the time. It’s so bad I will not use this feature till it’s fixed as it’s dangerous.
Phantom braking.
The vehicle control system intermittently commands hard braking at highway speed when there are no obstacles or vehicles nearby. This sometimes happens repeatedly over a period of several minutes and sometimes doesn't happen for weeks at a time. The braking and deceleration is so rapid as to result in difficulty controlling the car and potential hazard to cars following behind. After repeated "bug reports" to Tesla, nothing has changed. They issue a software update with a new game, but don't fix the hazardous problems.
The car brakes are applied when a truck traveling in opposite lane drives by when the cruise control is engaged. This has also occurred when there was discoloration on the road surface in my travel lane. Fortunately, no auto was following my vehicle or there would have been an accident.
My Tesla has been braking for no reason. This weekend we took a road trip to sun valley. Once in a while when cresting a hill my car would go into hard braking. It would also do this when a semi or larger vehicle was coming in the opposite direction on a two lane road. The lane departure system would also become disabled for no apparent reason. The wipers are the worst. They have no concept of automatic, there will be no rain and they will start wiping on high. And sometimes when there is rain they won't even wipe, I have to operate them manually. This is very distracting and makes hard to focus on the road.
The car is experiencing phantom braking. The vehicle incorrectly detects objects and brakes vigorously dropping speed really quickly. If traffic is following we could easily get rear ended. This happened over 10 times in a 100mile journey.
Adaptive cruise control was unusable without consistent phantom breaking issues. Brand new car driving home a few hours I encountered phantom breaking on 2 lane and 4 lane highways during the night and during the day. It was so consistent that I basically could not use the cruise control at all as it was unsafe to have the car randomly break when at highway speeds with nothing in front of me and vehicle behind me. There is no way to turn off and leave off the adaptive part that effects the breaking and simply use a set speed cruise control.
When on auto pilot or even simple cruise control the car often forcibly brakes for no apparent reason. It will sometimes brake when another vehicle is in the other lane or for no reason at all. I have asked the service center about the issue and they claim they have never heard of the problem. This is a very dangerous problem as it could cause a vehicle behind me to rear end me and cause damage or injury. It is terrifying when it happens.
Model y exhibits "phantom braking" when adaptive cruise control is engaged. This happens every time a large truck is passing in the opposite lane on a two lane road. If another driver is behind our vehicle, they may not be able to stop to avoid a crash. Corrective action is to turn off adaptive cruise control or step on accelerator to override the braking. In addition, the car will also perform "phantom braking" when there is no discernible issue, with no traffic in front of our vehicle or sometimes on a left turn when there is a guard rail on the right.
While traveling east and west on I-8 between san diego and phoenix the 2022 Tesla Model Y would suddenly brake. We could not reliably reproduce when or how the vehicle braked. On some occasions, we were near other vehicles. On other occasions there were no other vehicles or obstacles on or near the car. Others at risk. On the highway the vehicle rapidly decelerated and if there would have been a car behind us, there would have been an accident. After the first two incidents, we kept our foot on the gas pedal to accelerate if we felt a rapid deceleration. Reproducing the problem. We rarely drive the car, and have not had the problem in city driving. We tried to reproduce the problem during that trip, but we're unsuccessful. We have not taken the vehicle to Tesla. Inspection. The vehicle is not been inspected by an insurance company or Tesla. Warnings. We did not see any warning lights or alerts concerning the problem. After the first two incidents, we paid attention to the screen to see if any warnings appeared to help us identify the problem.
The cruise control system malfunctioned during the very first highway use (within several weeks after receiving the vehicle). While driving at a high speed on the open highway, the car would break hard for no clear reason, even when I was not following closely behind any other car. The nearest car in my lane was least 20 car lengths ahead, if at all. This experience was quite traumatizing to both me and my wife, and made us feel unsafe on the highway. Luckily, I follow the speed limits in our state, which reduces the likelihood of a rear-end collision (all others drive at least 10 mph faster than the limit and zip past me). However, this "phantom braking" (as others have dubbed it) is very hard and sudden, often dropping the car down from 70 to 50 mph in seconds, without warning. When I contacted Tesla via the app, they texted me to reset the cameras (do a hard reboot). There has been no follow-up by them. I do not think that this has fixed it, but have not given it a full test on a long trip. I wonder if this has something to do with the removal of the radar guidance system by the manufacturer, as this system was discontinued immediately before my Tesla was built. This experience has been so disturbing that we are seriously considering selling the Tesla and buying another brand of ev. It made our initial 200 mile trip in the car one of the worst driving experiences that I have had in decades. I had to hold the steering wheel with an iron grip out of fear for when the car would next capriciously decide to jam on the brakes. Needless to say, I was physically exhausted and emotionally drained by the time that we reached our destination. To specifically address your questions: the car is available for inspection; it put my and my wife's safety at risk; the "dealer" has not specifically confirmed the problem; nobody has inspected the vehicle; there was no warning prior to the problems.
While on auto pilot, phantom braking at high speeds on highway with no cars nearby. No warning on the monitor when this happens. Long wait at the service center for appointment but this issue has been communicated to Tesla. Car resumes the cruise speed almost immediately after phantom braking. Also communicated to Tesla is that the wipers do not always automatically come on with moisture on windshield when set in auto mode.
