Seven problems related to car stall have been reported for the 1999 Toyota 4Runner. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2011

The vehicle stalls, incosistently, but, on a frequent basis, at any given time, then will be fine for a long period of time. It eats batteries. I've had to replace the battery every year. A local automotive electrical specialist replaced the b+ cable from the battery to the starter, and the problem went away for a year, but, has since returned. I recently upgraded to a battery with more cranking watts, and have een improvement. However. There's the issue of the hesitation, jerking, and loss of power, when taking off after 1st start of the day, replaced plugs, and battery and did a tune - up, but, it made no difference. Very dangerous and have almost been involved in accidents multiple times, as a result, including dying while towing a trailer, smack dab in the middle of a 4-way intersection of a traffic - choked coastal highway in the middle of a popular beach resort, featuring over 200 outlet shops and malls, mid-day, on the 4th of July weekend, and a Saturday at that,, and having to contact roadside assistance 5 times, to get it going again, to get to my destination, less than 6 miles away, and having to drive on the road's shoulder the whole way, in case of another break-down,.

2 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2002

Vehicle stalls and dies on freeway almost causing wreck. Find out there is no fuel in tank even though fuel gauge reads 1/2. Toyota says TSB el010-00 addresses known defective 1999 and 2000 fuel gauges and also addresses some gauges inaccurately reading empty when 4 gallons remain, but my vehicle is a few months and miles out of warranty so toy will not pay for fix. No engine, no steering, no brakes, lots of traffic. . . .

5 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/15/1999

Vehicle stalls/quits when braking, usually between 0 and 10 mph. Started after having vehicle for 2 weeks. Dealer first visit, they could find no problems. Second visit, changed throttle body, did not solve problem. Said it was part of a group that needs new computer, that did not help either, said it may be the transmission. Problem still not solved. Toyota tech line told the local dealer it must be a fluke just give it back to the customer (me). I give a lot of credit to the local dealer service personnel, they told me this and told me it was unsafe to drive. They are working the problem and gave me a loaner car. Problem is getting worse, at first it was occasionally, but now it is still intermitent, but will occur numerous times a day, if you drive it.
