36 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2018

Faulty denso alternators (re-manufactured): 1/6/17 the original alternator failed in my vehicle (after 11+ yrs) and was replaced (unbeknownst to me) with a re-manufactured denso alternator. On 1/19/18, that alternator failed, after only 1 year and 2 weeks. On 1/20/18 the service dept at the dealership replaced that failed alternator with what turned out to be a defective alternator that did not work because the bearings ceased, which the mechanic discovered immediately upon installation. After inquiring about the manufacturer and looking back at my 1/6/17 repair record, I learned that both alternators installed on 1/6/17 and 1/20/18 were denso re-manufactured alternators. I had assumed new alternators would be installed. I then requested that a brand new alternator be installed instead, which happened on 2/1/18. Both times, on 1/6/17 and 1/19/18 my vehicle had to be towed to be serviced. First time it died on a fwy off-ramp, second time it died in a parking lot. Denso's website claims "remanufactured denso alternators go through a grueling process . . . New or remanufactured, a denso alternator is a quality component. " sorry, but not true!.

37 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

I am having deep rust issues on my 4runner v8 limited frame mostly near the catalytic converter. The rust is so bad there is a big hole on both size of the frame 3inch tall 7 inch wide. I have found some loose nuts inside of the frame rails, not sure where they are from and there are a lot of broken frame parts on the frame rails. A 13year old truck shouldn't have that much rust.

38 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2017

I bought the truck a little less than a year ago, in November of 2017, from a friend. I am the third owner of the truck and know that the vehicle has always been well maintained and serviced. Weeks after purchasing the truck, exiting the highway, the brake system failed. Pedal to the floor, no pressure. I was able to coast the car to a nearby parking lot and had it towed to my mechanic. Upon inspection, my mechanic noted that the frame was severely rusted. The brake lines had failed as a result of the corrosion and rust on the undercarriage. I replaced the entire brake system at a cost of $3500. 00. A month later, the truck failed inspection due to a hole in the subframe caused by the rust. It was then that I began research and learned of the Toyota recall for every other truck except the 4runner in similar years/generation. I took the truck to burdick Toyota in cicero, new york this September to have the frame inspected. The tech report (which I can furnish on request) stated that the frame was extremely rusted, scaled and deteriorated for the age of the vehicle, but that it posed no imminent threat. I disagree with this assessment, as it has already caused one catastrophic failure. I've learned of a potential investigation and must say, I believe it to be the responsibility of the NHTSA to recall the affected 4runners of the same generation. Had the scenario been different, I or my family could have been injured or killed. I'm a teacher, and haven't the means to simply replace a vehicle I've already had to put thousands of dollars into. I bought it for the safety of my brand new baby girl. I feel it morally imperative that the NHTSA do the right thing and recall the 4runners as they have the other vehicles. Human life should always be more important than a companies bottom line. Toyota is responsible and should be held accountable. Lives are at stake.

Frame is rotting.

44 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2017

My 2005 Toyota 4runner has only 61,500 miles registered on the odometer. This vehicle has never been involved in any accidents. The chassis/frame exhibits severe corrosion. It is my belief the integrity and safety of the vehicle, its passengers and other motors are at risk as a direct result of the deteriorated chassis condition.

45 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2017

The frame is rusting through from the inside out. I have owned the truck since new and it only has 108000 miles on it. Toyota recalled the tacoma model (which shares the same frame), but for some reason they have not recalled the 4runner. If I didn't catch this now it could have collapsed and caused an accident.

46 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

Frame rust - problem is the same as what has happened to same year Toyota tacoma pickups. These vehicles should also be recalled and have the same fix applied to them as was applied to the tacoma pickup. Purchased vehicle used in October and had shop put it up on a lift 2 months later for routine maintenance. They said frame rusted and unsafe to drive.

47 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2016

I was driving the vehicle, hit a pot hole. Little bit after that, when I came to a stop and started to accelerate, the vehicle started to swirve all over the road and become uncontrollable. I was able to pull over and stop the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle, the rear component broke off from the frame due to rust. The dealer stated that the SUV will need frame replaced due to rust. The vehicle 180k miles tune up was performed at the dealer in winter 2015 and no rust was mentioned upon "complete" inspection. The vehicle is now non operation and is a total lost due to rust. Every 30k miles the vehicle was taken to the dealer for maintenance. Oil changes were performed every 5k miles with synthetic oil. The car has been garaged for since purchasing it new in 2005. It has never been on the beach. Salt is not used on our road.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2016

There is a massive amount of rust on the frame of the truck. I was at a Toyota dealer where they were replacing tacoma frames. The pile of frames they have been taking out look so much better than mine that I am amazed that 4runner are not included in the recall.

49 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2016

Extensive rusting of the frame.

50 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

The frame on my 2005 Toyota 4runner is severely rusted. I have had multiple pieces fall off my SUV, some while driving. This includes the front skid plate, transmission lines, and other small components. The frame on my SUV is coming apart. Rather large pieces are flaking off. It is plain to see where the metal is separating. I recently discovered that the front impact sensors have rusted loose of the frame and are now dangling free. This leaves my SUV susceptible to the airbags not inflating during a front-end crash. The above has been occurring over the last few years. I have opened case #1707170870 with Toyota, but they have told me that there is no remedy for my vehicle.

51 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

Bought vehicle and 1st service was notified that I have massive amounts of frame rust. Vehicle was purchased in south carolina where it rarely snows.

52 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2015

On July 31, 2015 while traveling east on I-78 near easton pennsylvania at approximately 70 mph the steering wheel in my vehicle abruptly began to shake violently. I was fearful of loosing control of my vehicle. A subsequent inspection by tri-county Toyota in royersford, PA to determine the cause of this malfunction revealed extensive rust damage to the frame of the vehicle. The dealer did not offer any remedy to correct the condition to make it safe for me to drive. Via email I contacted the executive offices of Toyota motor sales, USA. Their representative did respond to me but did not offer me any resolution to correct this hazard. She did offer me a $1,500 "loyalty" offer towards the purchase of a new Toyota. That response is not acceptable to me. This is clearly a design flaw with this vehicle that make them dangerous on the roads. There are other 4runner owners who have similar experiences with their vehicles. Additionally, other Toyota vehicles have been recalled for the same condition. My vehicle is in very good condition mechanically because I have diligently adhered to Toyota's maintenance schedule. I regularly wash it so that neither the body nor the interior show any undue signs of wear. I am merely seeking reasonable remedy to this issue that was not caused by any fault of mine.

53 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2015

Rust! frame is rusting severely. Its looks to be a matter of time before something major fails on the frame. Most recently, the heat shield above the catalytic convertor rusted off and fell from the moving vehicle. The mounting bolts had rusted to nothing allowing the heat shield to become loose and eventually fall off.

54 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

Two service center refused to worked on 4-runner because of major rust issue. This is a garaged 58,000 4-runner with parts that are falling off from the underside. Toyota claims they do not have rust problems with there 4runner.

55 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2015

Upon inspection of the frame I have found an excessive amount of rust. This concerns me in two ways, possible frame failure and loss of any value the truck may have.

56 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2015

I had my electronic sun/moon roof replaced a year or so after the warranty, because it jammed in the open position. Toyota replacement charge was $2000 +. It jammed again this spring and the "basic repair" has not worked and Toyota wants to again charge $2000 +. This is a chronic complaint about this make/model and feature and Toyota only will warrant any repair/replacement work to 1 year.

57 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2014

In miami, FL. At intersection of waterway drive and sw. 72 Ave. Made left turn under rain, (all day raining) vehicle lost control after turn. Came to a stand still and momentarily headed, accelerated towards a tree aprox. 15 feet away, vehicle crashed against tree so severely that passenger side of frame bent bad (declared total lost by state farm insurance). Air bag did not deploy. I hit head against and broke wind shield, hit steering wheel with rib cage, I was taken to south miami hospital emergency room. After two cats cans and two x-rays I was sent home to follow up wiht my primary care physician I am still in pain mainly neck an shoulders and lately my lower back. Still have trouble sleeping, etc. Cannot do house shores. Pcp forbidden any type of exercise for the time being. Please advise. I surrendered the car to state farm insurance but did not sign the title over to them yet. I was unable to drive for over a month. Thanks in advance. Please contact me.

58 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2012

Purchased 2005 Toyota 4runner in 2012 with 58k miles. Always washed undercarriage. Mechanic began patching rust on frame 2011. Its beyond repair now with 128k miles. Frame is completely dangerous.

59 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2011

On October 30, 2011, I was driving off the new london connecticut highway exit and as I was applying my foot on the brake to slow down, my vehicle would not stop, it felt that it was picking up speed instead. I pumped the breaks couple times and pressed on the petal as far as it could go to the floor. A great fear came over me and my heart started racing, my whole body stiffened, trying hard to focus, I turned my ignition key off in order for my vehicle to stop. By that time the accident occurred. I live in connecticut. I discovered that my warranty was not registered with Toyota financial service insurance. I was also informed by Toyota motor sales USA inc. That a recall on my vehicle was not corrected by the dealership before they sold it to me. The floor mat which leaned toward the accelerator pedal and interfered with the accelerator pedal arm and became temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position rather than returning to the idle position. When this matter was confronted to conicelli Toyota, they stated that they apologized for the human error in missing the recall before delivery. And in reference to the certification of the vehicle; they have found that there was a computer error between conicelli and Toyota motors on the processing of the certification information. The apology and explanation about the computer error is false because in order to register the certification of the vehicle with Toyota motors inc. , conicelli would have had to confirm the recall repair to qualify in delivering a vehicle to a buyer. A manufactory prohibits a dealership to sell a vehicle without repairing a recall. This computer error was corrected on June of 2012, after the recall repair (warranty expired on July 30, 2012. ) conicelli Toyota dealership located at 512 ridge pike, conshohocken, PA 19428, sold me a fallacious certified vehicle warranty.

62 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2008

When my Toyota had reached approx. 31,000 miles, the sunroof jammed while away from home during a rain storm. Fortunately, the car was still in warrantee, so the repair was covered. Note: I rarely used the sunroof except for visibility or for ventilation if parked outside without shelter from the sun, I used the tilt mode only, probably a max 50 times. Wind noise was objectionable while driving so the only time it was slid was testing at new and after replacement. I like the sunroof as an emergency exit, if it works? at approximately 68,000 miles (equivalent miles from new versus from the first repair to now. ) the sunroof again failed, same condition. Use had been minimal, living in cold mountain state, again, use since repair approx. 25-30 times, condition of rails would indicate any wear. I was told it would cost approx $700 for parts, $2,000 for labor. Upon contacting Toyota, they said they would pay $700 on parts but no labor ($2,000. ). They wouldn't disclose if this was an ongoing problem. Is it an ongoing problem with Toyota sun roofs? thanks, richard conway stillwater1319@gmail. Com.

63 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2005

There's excessive rusting of the chassis, axle, differential and other components under the vehicle. I'm the original owner and observed rust formation within the first year of ownership. The SUV has only 84k miles and is garaged most of the time. I have been using rust inhibitors to slow the process.
