I currently have 2000 miles on a 2013 Toyota 4 runner sr5 (purchased new). In the first 30 days of city and freeway driving, it averaged 14. 5 mpg to 15. 6 mpg. In the following months (3. 5 total), it averaged 15. 4 to an occasional 16. 6 mpg. A far cry from the claimed "17 city, 19 combined, 22 hwy). A Toyota mechanic tested the vehicle (10 miles) and claimed the vehicle's average is 19. 5 mpg per their computer. . . Is Toyota misrepresenting the fuel consumption of the 4 runner? if so, should 4 runners owners be compensated?.

Fuel gauge is inaccurate, gives misleading information, may be too much or too little fuel remaining. This leads to frequent, unnecessary, gas stations stops.

2000 Toyota 4runner fuel gauge not working. Toyota has issued a bulletin and basically redesigned the parts for a faulty system and expects the consumers to pay for their engineering problems. I don't think it's fair to have consumers pay 800 to 900 dollars as quoted from my dealer for a design flaw for Toyota.
I purchased a 1999 Toyota 4runner 2 years ago after driving it off the lot we notcied within a week that the fuel gauage was not working. They explained that had they knew it was broken, how wouldnt you, they would not have been able to sell it for that price. I paid for the fix and was reassured that this would solve the problem. Well, starting about 1 month ago I am now having the same problem. I contacted Toyota goodwill and they told me it was only covered under initial warranty. I have read several forums and columns on this issue and the problem does not occurr within the first 36 k miles so alot of good that does. I am still waiting to see if management reviews my case, but I doubt anything will get done unless I continue to call back. I would think that Toyota would want to extend some goodwill considering this is not the first time it has happened to me. The safety issue is relevant considering there is no real way to exactly track your miles and becoming stranded on the side of the highway or late at night is certainly not a good thing to have to experience.

I have a 1999 Toyota 4-runner and the fuel gauge has stopped working. It began by showing a quantity of fuel when it really did not have any fuel. This caused me to run out of fuel and almost have a major accident. It now may read full, zero, 1/2 etc. You cannot depend on the accuracy. I contacted dealer who told me they knew it was a Toyota defect but that the vehicle was out of warranty and they would do nothing about it but tell me to bring it in and they would fix it for between $500 - $1000!!! Toyota has even issued a service bulletin TSB # el 010-00 to address the problem but not offer repairing the problem. This is a dangerous situation for those unaware and could result in death or serious injury.
While exiting highway a 2007 Toyota 4runner exhibited sudden unwanted acceleration malfunction and was stopped by applying brakes with full force. The vehicle shuddered and returned to normal idle, then it was driven to a safe location and transported to Toyota dealer. The vehicle was checked out and no defect was found, this vehicle is not on any current recall list. It appears to have an unknown etc problem which may be placing many Toyota a serious risk.

I have a 2004 Toyota 4 runner limited. Gas pedal went to the floor, 0800 hrs, 1/26/2010. With engine roaring, I had to firmly put on brake and hit the pedal several times, before it released. I almost went thru an intersection. Took to Toyota dealer same week. They said it has an electronic gas pedal. Operates on a motor. I filed a complaint with Toyota.

#1 starter stuck twice-even removed key and engine kept cranking. #2 fuel guage reaes full when empty and vise versa. #3 p0171 engine code keeps throwing #4 brakes fade when applied hard. Have replaced pads and rotors and still fade.
My gas gauge has failed like many others I have read about on the internet. Seems to be a serious problem which has caused many wrecks.
My daughter was driving home from school, approximately a 3 mile drive, her 1999 4 runner began jerking and then the engine died. She was able to restart it and drive for several hundred yards when it did the same thing. This time the car would not restart. My wife went to pick her up and she was able to restart the car again and drive approximately the same distance when it died again, this time the car would not restart. I had to have it towed and its currently at a repair station waiting to be diagnosed. I've heard there is a service bulletin regarding a fuel pickup tube/sensor problem but I haven't been able to find it. Why hasn't Toyota had a recall yet?.
I recently purchased a new 2006 Toyota 4 runner. I have had nothing but motor transmission, electrical failures. I have only had my vehicle for 1 month and anything and every thing has gone wrong. I even had to give my daughter cpr on the side of the road due to carbon monoxide inhalation. She went into respiratory failure do to this she has severe asthma.

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 30-35 mph, the contact noticed a chemical odor. If the windows were open, the smell seemed stronger. The contact stated that because of the smell, he had to take medication. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer six times but the failure could not be remedied. The contact was advised to change the type of fuel he did but the odor was still present. The contact called the manufacturer who also stated that he to change the fuel type. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 6 and the current mileage was 48,200. Updated 02/02/11.
I purchased a brand new sports edition 2003 4 runner in July of 2003. There is a sulfur smell emanating from the vehicle at all times. When I complained to Toyota I was told the odor was caused by the gas I use. I have never had this problem before and Toyota just washes their hands of it. I was given a paper which purports to be a technical service bulletin. It states: Feb 24 2003 - some owners of Toyota vehicles may experience a sulfur like or rotten egg odor from the exhaust system. Sulfur is a natural component of crude oil from which gasoline is refined and the amount of sulfur can be decreased through the refining process. The amount of sulfur in fuel sold in California is regulated; however, gasoline sold in other states can have a higher sulfur content. Sulfur content also varies considerably between gasoline brands and locations. Applicable vehicles all models repair procedure : a sulfur odor emitted from the vehicles tailpipe does not necessarily indicate there is an issue with the vehicles running condition but is most likely directly related to the fuel. If vehicles is exhibiting an excessive sulfur odor the following checks should be performed if the mil light is on check for dtc's and repair as necessary information trouble is found after performing the above check recommend the customer try a different source of fuel. Replacement of oxygen sensors, air/fuel ratio sensors or catalytic converters will not reduce the odor and therefore not be considered for warranty (sounds like a cop-out to me) Toyota should look for a solution.
Consumer received recall 03v146000. Called the dealer to arrange an appointment for repairs. Dealer stated we didn't have that part yet and we didn't know anything about that recall.
2003 4 runner. . . . . 12,000 miles, running on amaco sliver gas, still smells as rotten as ever. . . Been through hell with the scott clark Toyota in charlotte and gaston (north carolina). . . . . They are all liars!!!! saying it's the first they ever heard of such a thing. . . . . Filed reports and contacted owners. . Called everyone. . . Even those jerks couldn't mail me lemon law papers etc. I will never own another Toyota automobile. . . Something should be done, a class lawsuit with enough people may get something accomplished or at least my $39,000 back. The smell of sulpher stinks so bad that it's to hard to even sale the piece of junk.
1999 4 runner sr5. My complaint is that I have hard starting, intermittent (poor, rough) idle and some time not idle. At high elevation, I have extremely poor gas mileage. I have had several dealer services investigate the problem. Dealers were not able to isolate problem. How I dealt with it over the years. Never used the vehicle other than at sea level and pump throttle when idle was not able to be retained.
Erratic fuel gauge, danger of running out of fuel on a dangerous situation.
I don't know what the clunking is still. The gas smell is ellusive. Tail lights = frustrating!!!.
