Parking Brake Problems of Toyota 4Runner

Toyota rav4 2010 - on stop and go traffic I was going about 5 mph and I looked down for a second and rear ended another car. Before I hit the car I slammed on my brakes and based on my many years of driving experience (12+) I believe the car should have stopped but it did not. The incident was very minor. My car has a few scratches that may go away with just soap and water. The other car did not have any damage. I did have neck pain all week and I still have it on and off. After the incident I tried, on safe conditions, to go up to 20 mph and brake suddenly and noticed that the car looses braking power as you do this. The brakes full power is felt mid press (as they are half way down) but as they are pressed all the way in they loose power. I had noticed a loud sound when I used my hand brake after putting the car in park. The car also moves about an inch or two after I put the car in park and depress the brake pedal. I called the dealer about the hand brake issue and they said it was normal as the gear was going into place. I didn't think to much of it but after my car crash incident I think that there may be a problem with the brakes.

Vehicle parked in driveway (running) with transmission in park and the emergency brake fully engaged. Vehicle rolled out of driveway, across street, over curb, and down a steep ravine hitting a tree. Broached local dealer concerning any safety issues or vehicle problems and they indicated none had been reported to them or your website and questioned circumstances as reported. Customer paid for all damages and repairs.

The emergency bake on my Toyota 4runner-2005 do not hold . The vehicle can be driven foward or in reverse with the emergency brakes on. Mileage on the vehicle is 33,000. Miles. The dealer on several occasions was requested to fix the brakes to no avail. I was told that that the way they are & live with them.

I love my 1998 Toyota 4-runner sr5 - but I hate the expense of the braking system. In the 5 years that I have owned my vehicle I have had to completely replace the entire braking system pads, rotors, drums, cables etc four times. It is never just the pads. Every single time I've taken it in for a brake inspection - they always need to machine the rotors. And, no it is not my driving ability. Each time I have had to pay for this very expensive repair (400-600) the mechanics always say the same thing - "we see this all the time on these 4wd 4-runners - they just don't design the braking systems properly for this type of truck". Twice I have run off the road in order to avoid hitting someone in front of me because of complete failure, once while only going 20 mph. Toyota tacoma's appear to not have this type of problem - I think after thousands of dollars in brake system repairs and two very near accidents - someone at Toyota should evaluate this braking system and either offer an alternative or offer a warning to potential buyers.
