The dash of my 4 runner has split all the way across the front. It's not from the sun because my car is in the garage when I'm not at work. I keep my windows cracked when I'm at work it's hot outside. It's on the front where all my gauges are not on the top. I googled the problem I have and it looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. One picture I saw looked just like mine. I took it to our locate Toyota dealership and they said they have never saw one split like it has split. I'm not the only one with this problem. If you need pictures I will send them to you. Please look into this. Thank you.
Frame is rusted out around rear control arm brackets. Numerous rust holes in frame. This vehicle is unsafe to drive in this condition and Toyota does not want to do anything about it. I have seen hundreds of the same model vehicle online with this same issue. This needs to be a recall, just like the tacoma frames. Vehicle is in excellent condition and has been well maintained. It is a shame this 4runner is unsafe to drive. Beautiful truck, unsafe frame.
Vehicle was taken to dealer for scheduled 95k mile service. I was contacted by the dealer and told that teh vehicle was "not worth working on because the entire frame is rotted and this is a safety hazard. The vehicle should not be driven". The vehicla has been well maintained and is excelent condition in all other aspects. I see many instances of this happen in other on-line sites. Toyota has recalled oother vehicles in eth same model year (2000 tundra) for a similar problem yet this one has been ignored.
I hit a pot hole traveling at 25 mph and broke the frame of my 2000 4runner. I brought the car to my mechanic and he said the frame has rusted from the inside out and is non-repairable and was very dangerous to be driving. The truck is in otherwise good condition mechanically and the body has no rust.
I was getting off 385 onto woodruff road. I needed to get over into the other lane because I was going to turn down ordhird park road and there is only one lane that allows you too. I put on my blinker and got over. Once I had gotten over this man started to honk his horn and drove up to the rear of my car and a very fast pace. He kept honking so I pulled into the shopping center right beside the kangaroo gas station. I was then about to turn onto orchird park when the white Chrysler came by and stopped in front of me and started honking and flicking me off. He finally got out of the way and so I pulled onto orchird park. He then proceeded to stick his fingers out of the window and flick me off and keep slamming on his brakes. He was and older white male. He should be taken off the road for this type of behavior. In no way did I cut him off. At all times I followed the road safety rules. The vehicle was a white Chrysler 300 with chrome all around the trim. Then man had some type of bandage on his hand. And her wore glasses.
On or about July 16, 2012 owner noticed that the vehicle dashboard had vertical cracks near the driver side and passenger side air vents. On or about 9/21/12, owner noticed a horizontal crack in the passenger side dashboard above the glove box. Vehicle has not been in any accidents and has been housed in garages at work and home.
Wife was driving vehicle on state route, heard loud noise and vehicle started shimmying side to side. She slowed down and limped vehicle home. Today raised vehicle on my lift at work and found frame rusted through where rear suspension arm mounting brackets are welded to frame. Glad no accident had occurred, as my wife, children and new sister-in-law were all passengers! otherwise love the vehicle, was intending on replacement with a sequoia, but now I am unsure if that is a good move. I have seen many tacomas come in that had frame rust in the same exact location. Wish Toyota would cover this problem in the 4runners, as we are just as loyal as the tacoma owners. Seems like a coincidence that there are many people are complaining about frame rust on the internet forums about the 4runners too. I sure hope Toyota can keep me as a loyal customer and that I can continue to promote them to my customers as I very often do. I was really seriously considering spending the $3900+ tax + my installation time, but it seems Toyota has discontinued my frame. I even double-checked with corporate Toyota. What to do now?. . . . . . . Never thought it would come to this. . . Just some help even. . .
Frame is rusted through and fails safety inspection. Manufacturer offers no reasonable recourse.
Rusted frame. . . . . Unsafe safe to drive.
Frame corrosion! only had the vehicle for a year and it's already 'pandora's box", help us out like you helped all the customers with rusted out Toyota pickups please! I'm getting killed, going to be homeless by the end of this repair!.
Pass side rear frame rusted through!.
The frame is rusting through on several places, but one particular location is the worst. This location is the weld joint between a solid steel bracket of the same size, thickness and material as the main frame. This bracket holds the sway-type bar, which attaches back to the rear axle. The weld joint between the bracket and the main frame has almost completely rusted through and is almost completely seperated from the main frame. The joint is about 8 inches long. Over about 6 inches of the weld joint, the area is rusted away and there is a 3/8-inch gap between parts. The remaining 2 inches are holding temperarily, but it is unsafe. This rusted through and failed frame has caused the 1997 Toyota 4-runner to be unsafe, undriveable and un-fixable. It is unsafe because if the frame joint rusts more and completely breaks, the vehicle will be uncontrollable.
I found a 10" long x1" wide section of frame perforated on the passenger side at the cross member. There are several other places on the passenger side that are perforated as well. The drivers side seems ok. I am now worried about the safety of this vehicle.
I have a 1999 Toyota 4runner sr5, with an immaculate body, however the frame rails have rotted out so badly that you can put your finger through the rail in some places. The frame is unsafe and a failure could result in serious personal injury or death. The most severe location of the rot in just in front of the rear leaf springs on the inside of the frame. Took it for inspection and it failed as it was unsafe to drive. Now have to take it to a welder to see if it can even be repaired. Thinking of filing a claim with the attorney general of NY state. The thing is it passed inspection at the small car business I bought it from( d and d autosales in binghamton NY-dont go there!!!!!!) and there is no way it rotted like this in less than a yr so I'm thinking they passed it just to get the sale. Havent contacted Toyota but they most likely wont do a thing for me.
The frame on my 1998 Toyota 4runner sr5 has completely rusted through on the rear and has broken in half. The vehicle is no longer safe to drive. The Toyota tacoma pickup (same model year time-frame) has the same issue and has been recalled, but the 4runner has not. The 4runner should also be recalled and a 15 year extended frame rust though warranty applied.
I was making a right hand turn into a parking spot. At the moment right before you straighten the vehicle wheel to park, the car suddenly revved up for about 1 to 2 seconds causing the vehicle to accelerate forward. The vehicle went over the curve and hit the building in front of the parking spot.
Easy to chip windshield glass. Weak windshield glass.
Purchased vehicle new and the 5 speed automatic transmission opperated smoothly. Around 9,300 miles the transmission started shifting gears harshly. The harshness is intermittent but happening more frequently. Also, while at highway speeds going downhill, the rpms bounce everywhere from 1500 rpms to 3000 rpms. Its almost as if the transmission is confused and doesn't know what gear to choose anymore. I also feel as if the brakes aren't releasing. When sitting at a red light going down hill, once I release my foot off the brake and before I accelerate, while coasting, I feel a "thud" in the rear end after about two rotations of the wheels. I drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic daily in pittsburgh and this shifting is awful - by far the worst transmission in a vehicle I have ever owned. I mentioned this issue during my last service visit at the Toyota dealership and they said a technical service bulletin had not been issued yet. This needs addressed ASAP. This can't be the way Toyota intended for this vehicle to operate - especially since it didn't always operate this way.
While driving the vehicle heard a loud noise and thump. Took vehicle home to inspect. Noticed front driver's side spring bracket was broken. Had vehicle towed to mechanic. Coil spring bracket that holds coil spring and shock in is rusted away. Coil spring is broken off the frame. Mechanic and auto body advisor stated that vehicle is un-driveable. The chassis is completely rusted away and must be replaced. The entire frame could easily crack in half if vehicle is driven. Back bumper is almost disintegrated from rust and front bumper is rusting rapidly. The tacoma and tundra have been recalled for the same problem. This vehicle only has 120,000 miles and kept in mint condition. Spoke with Toyota in California they said nothing they can do because 4runner is not on recall list. Please help me. I now have no driveable vehicle and no money to buy a new one. Toyota has to make this right.
I am writing to report a defect in the frame of my 2000 Toyota 4runner. The frame exhibits extensive rusting. The frame has holes and has separated along the bottom weld. Toyota has declared the vehicle to be unsafe to operate, yet will do nothing to compensate for or correct the problem.
The frame is rusted/corroded through in multiple places where important parts are attached. I was told by the mechanic that it is not safe to drive, however it is my only form of transportation.
My 2002 Toyota 4 runner that is in excellent body and running condition was in for a routine service and the dealer told us the frame had a hole in it and it was unsafe to drive, it was inspected by two representatives of Toyota who said that it is not a warranty issue and there are no "programs' and they would do nothing about it even thou there is a history of frame failures with Toyota's.
While traveling under cruise control at 55- 60 mph on a rural 2 lane highway in nc, I came upon a vehicle in my lane traveling at a slower rate of speed. As I approached the vehicle, I accelerated to pass. While passing I could tell that the vehicle felt like it was moving faster than the 60 - 65 mph it should have been for the amount of gas I gave it, but I was concentrating on completing the pass and did not look at the speedometer. After passing and pulling back into my lane, I depressed the brake to slow down. My vehicle slowed slightly but felt odd, like it was pulling. When I removed my foot from the brake, my vehicle began rapidly accelerating on its own, quickly getting to about 70 - 75 mph before I depressed the brake again. Again the vehicle slowed slightly but felt odd, like it was pulling. When I removed my foot from the brake, my vehicle again rapidly accelerated on its own, at which point I realized something was wrong and depressed the brake harder. The vehicle pulled harder this time and started vibrating severely. I removed my foot from the brake and the vehicle again began accelerating. I shifted to neutral and brought the car to a stop on the side of the road. Over the next ~ 20 minutes I tried ~ 4 - 5 times to crank the car. Each time the engine immediately revved such that the tachometer almost instantly hit red zone, and I cut the engine off. I called Toyota's "800" phone number, and they told me to get the car to a totota dealer. Before calling a tow truck, I tried cranking the car one more time, and that time the engine cranked normally.
Hair line crack over instrument panel on 2005 4-runner sport addition. Just appeared nothing occured to make it happen.
The evening of 8/10/11 as I was leaving work, I turned the vehicle on and a high pitched alarm-type sound started; vsc light, brake lights came on. At this point, I asked a near by supervisor to take a look at the vehicle; upon inspection he did not find anything out of place. He test drove the vehicle around a couple of parking spaces as I watched. He stopped the vehicle and asked if I had been having brake issues. He then asked me to test it to see if my brakes normally responded as they did with him. When I got into the vehicle to test drive, I also went across a few parking spaces but when I got ready to brake, the brakes totally failed. The curb of the end parking space stopped the vehicle, it came to rest and the truck was later towed to Toyota dealership. On 8/11/11, Toyota dealership called me and stated that the skid control actuator/ecu assembly needed to be replaced which would cost $3,000.
My 2004 Toyota 4/runner dash board has cracks all in the front of the right side air bag (passenger side) they continue to grow becoming deep. They appeared at one time, this very unusual, I have owned a 1993 Toyota 4/runner and the dash board never has cracks and it was always parked out side. My 2004 Toyota 4/runner is a garage kept vehicle. This is a safety violation, only cracks on the front of the dash board above the glove box where the air bag is. I called Toyota dealership and they said nothing can be done, to replace it will be about 1,000. 00. . I also sent a complaint to Toyota customer service and the field inspector will not look at my 2004 4/runner because it is out of warranty and the year. . . My 2004 Toyota is very clean and very well kepted, as stated at the dealership when they inspected it and said they never saw anything like this. This is a safety issue and Toyota field inspector will not see my truck. . . No one can tell me that this will not deploy the air bag. . . I am a Toyota customer and I am not getting customer servie. Do I need to take my Toyota 2004 4/runner to another dealership that cares. . . Or I should not buy a Toyota vehicle. I am getting the run around from the dealership and Toyota customer service.
I am reporting a frame defect on my vehicle. I have a 1997 Toyota 4runner, and while on my way home, on the date stated, I hit a pothole in the road, and, immediately started hearing a noise at the driver side of my vehicle. I took the vehicle to our local dealership, and upon inspection, the diagnosis, was that the frame had broken, and was rubbing on my gas tank, which made the vehicle unsafe to drive any further. I have done research and have found many other complaints, similar to mine, yet, the manufacturer is unwilling to do anything to solve the issue, or offer any assistance to replace the defective part. I guess as long as nobody has been killed, or ,seriously injured, the problem isn't big enough yet!!!.
A 2005 Toyota 4runner was being parked in a garage and had come almost to a complete stop when the car accelerated and ran into the wall. The brake was unable to stop the acceleration.
I own a 2000 Toyota 4runner. I have noticed my frame near the rear suspension is so severely rotted that the frame will need to be cut and re-welded or replaced all together. There are multiple holes in the box frame of the vehicle due to the construction of the frame. Water seeps in through the frame, causing it to rust from the inside out. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for routine maintenance recently and they informed me as well of the extensive rusting. I was told that this is and will be a major safety issue. The vehicle was later taken to two repair shops and they both confirmed that the failure was due to the design of frame. The rest of the 4runner is in perfect condition with no surface rust, rot or other blemishes. However, below the vehicle the frame is rusted extensively.
Removed muffler to replace, found holes in frame on the inboard side and bracket securing rearend in place rotted 1/2 way around where it secures to the frame at the weld connection , so the bracket is 1/2 disconnected from frame no outward signs showing on the truck . . . . . There are no rust spots or rot showing on the body at all . . . . Small rust stains showing on the rear bumper only . . . . I have digital pictures of problem and have filed a complaint with Toyota their response was "it's out of warranty".
2006 Toyota 4runner. I was quoted $1,500 for a time cover oil leak repair in lakeland, FL. There was a TSB issued 2007 (eg049-07). Apparently, most of the charge is for labor, the replacement part is not expensive. I understand the avalon has the same problem. This repair cost is astronomical, especially considering that it's a commonly known problem in Toyotas - possibly from poor design. I don't think the consumer should have to absorb the cost of this repair. Hopefully, something is being done to help the consumer.
The frame of the vehicle is rusting out I have one or two holes in my frame and I see that is a safety problem. I work for a Toyota dealership and we replacing alot of tacoma frames due to rust. The 4runner frame is the same as the tacoma so I dont see why 4runner frames are not involved in the recall. Thanks.
I was coming into dewitt arkansas on highway165 on 12/13/09 at about 12:30pm with my cruise control on at about 60 mph. I tapped the brake to disengage the cruise control and slowed down to make a right hand turn into an exxon Mini mart. My 2006 Toyota 4runner suddenly accelerated as I attempted to stop near the front door. As I applied pressure to the brakes I heard the anti lock brakes clicking and suddenly the 4runner lunged forward striking a large pole that was in front of me. The rear wheels were spinning wildly and the back end was bouncing up and down. The 4runner was bouncing to the side and I slammed the shift lever into park. The power to the back wheels stopped. I sat back and took my foot off the brake pedal, then I noticed that the engine was still running wide open throttle. I reached up and turned the key off. I looked at the floor mat and it was in its normal location with no contact with the gas pedal. The two hooks were attached holding the floor mat in place. There was no way it could have been involved. Two employees came out and asked if I was okay. I told them I was okay, but scared to death. I told them I had heard about Toyotas having a sudden acceleration problem, but I never thought I would be involved in one. I had to walk around a while to calm down. I got the employees names and phone numbers in case I needed them. I went back outside and started the 4runner up again and it ran normal. I drove it to my dad's and left it there. I called the Toyota dealer the next day and had them come pick it up. The dealer had a local technician check it out. They said they could find nothing wrong and said I should come and get it. I told them that was unacceptable. They had a regional specialized field technician evaluate it. He said that there was no safety hazard with my 4runner. The dealer wants me to come and get the vehicle. Nothing has been fixed or repaired.
Driving into a parking garage in my Toyota 4runner I was pressing on the the brake as I was pulling into a space when all of a sudden my car lurched forward and slammed into the wall. I thought I had been hit from behind, but that was not the case. Within the week I was pulling into my sister's driveway, pressing on the brakes, and I felt a little jump from my car.
Approx 3 years ago, I noticed a small crack in the dash on the passanger side, I thought maybe someone did something and did not tell me. Since that time, my dash has increased in the amount and length of the cracks. One crack is about 24-28 inches long and others are about 2 inches and longer. I looked on the internet and found many complaints about the same issue. My 4runner is garage kept and I have not done anything to my dash that would create they cracks. What can happen if the passanger airbag is deployed in an accident? can this cause flying pieces of the dash board to be in your face when the airbag hits causing possible facial damage?.
I had a 2006 Toyota 4 runner, limited. The brake system never was right and that is why we got rid of the car. At a light, car would continue to inch forward. I complained to the dealer several times and when it lurched forward when stopped in a school zone this past spring, we immediately got rid of it, since the dealer kept telling me nothing was wrong.
My Toyota 4runner , 2005 was speeding and I couldn't control to stop it. Finally I managed to steer and hit the median of the highway and it stoppped. There was a damage to my car and and injury. I contacted Toyota about the accident but they are not fully cooperating to inspect and fix my car.
2003 4- runner I recently sold my 4-runner but want to report an incident that caused my car to crash into the side of my house causing considerable front-end damage to the car. I was maneuvering the car into its usual parking space, as I had done several hundred times before, when with my foot on the brake, the car surged forward into the side of the house. I did not report this issue at the time of the accident, but recent events have raised questions in my mind and I now believe that an acceleration issue may have been the cause of my accident. The 4-runner is not included in the recall involving floor mats or Toyota's more recent spate of braking recalls. Please advise.
Purchased pre-owned 4 runner ?certified? from russel Toyota 12/07 with approx 21k miles. Complained of unusual brake performance immediately but was told the vehicle was ?performing to factory specs? brake performance issues including aggressive stopping, stiff pedal, loss of pressure, and random ?anti-skid system? responses nearly caused a few accidents. On 3/14, approx 23k miles, complete brake failure, no pressure, accident avoided and coasted vehicle to a stop, pressure did not return. 4runner towed to dealer, master cylinder was ?internally leaking? and replaced. Symptoms continue and vehicle is completely unsafe. Numerous attempts have failed to re-produce the intermittent problem at the dealer and therefore the dealer keeps saying there is nothing wrong. Vehicle is unsafe and Toyota unwilling to help and referred us to ncds dispute resolution program or told us we can file a suit. This vehicle is unsafe and should be replaced. Breaks continue to fail/malfunction approximately 1 time per week. Dealer always says no problems found.
2007 Toyota 4 runner with bad ground clearance. Consumer states that the vehicle scrapes the ground. Toyota reps and service reps keep telling her that ground clearance is measured different ways. The consumer stated she wanted a vehicle with high ground clearance. The dealer told her the vehicle had 9. 1 inches of ground clearance, but later the consumer discovered that wasn't true.
Tl- the contact owns a 2000 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the vehicle could not be started. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the failure could not be replicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 142,130 and the current mileage 144,133. Kmj.
1. Flat tire, needed to get spare out from under vehicle. 2. Brand new spare tire had never been taken down, new spare tire has branding marking on the sidewall of the tire, from the heat under the vehicle and where it is attached to has compromised the safty of the tire. 3. Went to Toyota dealer and they said there was nothing they could do.
When the vehicle is slowing down to a stop it randomly lurches forward as if a vehicle is rear-ending mine. The frequency is 3-5 times in a 10 day period.
: the contact stated while driving 60 mph on normal road conditions, the surf board strapped to the luggage rack flew off. The contact noticed the rear cross bar detached from the rack side rails. No warning signals were observed. The dealership and the manufacturer did not accept responsibility because the front cross bar moved towards the rear hitting the rear cross bar forcing its detachment. The cross bars were adjusted to the side bars by thumb screws. The contact expressed concern because the board could hit another vehicle with fatal consequences. The contact was also convinced the thumb screws were not safe to strap any load on the luggage rack.
Not until I read the article on yahoo (inside washington missed signs in Toyotas recalls) did I realize I do have a problem with my 2006 Toyota 4runner. My 4runner constantly lurches foward as I have my foot on the brake in a stopped postion. I always thought it was just the way the truck was made since it was my first Toyota. Now I realize what the problem is. But how do I get it fixed? I do not see the 4runners as having the recall on them.
