2018 4runner trd off road premium. 24733miles (at the time this review is written) started to feel like it accelerate but with out doing it. (very few not that pronouce) took it to dealer on April 2020 around (14900miles). They did a recall check and said they found nothing and thay my truck was fine. March 2021 it happen again but now it was doing it very strongly. Truck started to stall dashboard lights started to appear 4wd indicator flashes rapidly charging system warning low engine oil pressure check engine multi-terrain flashes continuesly trac off light eco light took it to the dealer they told me they will check the problem. Call them to see if they happen to know what was going on and they told me that the were working on it doing the recall service (again). Next day they call me and said they did the recall (which there is not remedy available at this time 3-8-21) and the transmission was the problem and that I need to pay to get it fix it because they found metal debris on it. Went there right away they explained to me what they said it looks to be the problem. Fast forward they call me again and said problem was different (getting other party involved). The 3rd party went in to check the problem they said it was to be told a very different history saying they found gear oil inside transmission and they were sure (not because any testing) but because it looks and smells like it (when the oil they showed me at firs was burned oil) very different from what they told me before and now the truck transfer case was on the problem as well. All I know is transmission seems to be the problem and now a practicly new truck has to get a new transmission.

Won't engage in four wheel drive 4 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive indicator light kept flashing along with the wheel stabilizer indicator. Driving in snow, steering became very unstable. Vehicle has extended warranty which dealer seems to refuse to honor. Staten island Toyota service claims someone emptied fluid from transfer case. . No one has done work on car and no oil leakage ever evident in my driveway. . Car was in driveway for several days before moving that evening. Rarely driven in 4h position for gas purposes, and 99. 9% of the time the car is driven on paved roadways. Seems the dealer isn't willing to honor the extended warranty on the vehicle and has managed to right up the service call to cover Toyota's butt. They now want an additional $500. To drop transfer case. I am not feeling very trusting of the service center since. I have paid $200 already to diagnosis the problem. I would think they dropped the case already to diagnose the problem. Now staten island Toyota service center wants $500 from me to drop the transfer case for Toyota headquarters so maybe they can what ?? possibly null and void warranty. They are requesting $4,000 to do the job. I have taken it to a private independent mechanic I trust. This vehicle isn't abused im a 62 year old women who bought the car because I have a dog and needed cargo space.

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota 4 runner. The contact was driving 55 mph when the transfer case imploded and spewed out from under the vehicle, damaging the driveline. The vehicle was then towed to a local mechanic shop. The mechanic replaced the vehicle with a used transfer case and driveline at a cost of $1,374. The manufacturer was contacted and a case was filed. No other assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 152,664.

I have a 2004 Toyota 4runner sports edition. I always hear rattling noise when I am driving 40 mph. Recently, I took my car to Toyota to have this issue serviced. They said it was the transfer case. I was going drive it out of state with my wife for our anniversary, but they recommended I not to drive it. They replaced the transfer case. It was going to cost me over $1300, but luckily I had purchased an extended warranty. I have heard about power train problems with this model of Toyota that led to it being recalled. Another problem is when I come to a stop I hear a clunking noise. When I mentioned this issue, Toyota said its the 4wheel drive, but I wasn't using the 4w drive when this issue occurred for me. Even now its still a problem. Please advise on what I should do before something goes wrong.
I experienced a significant oil leak at the transfer case. It was determined the "o" ring on the transfer case actuator motor assembly was defective and caused the leak. The new "o" ring cost $10, but labor was $900.
I have a 2004 limited 4runner Toyota, all wheel drive, with v8. After about 20 thousand miles, my vehicle began making a very loud noise when coming to a stop, while simultaneously surging forward like I was rear ended. This noise also has a distinct metallic sound and jarring vibration each and every time. If the brake is not presses firmly, the car will lounge forward. This noise and "clanking" also occurs when lifting my foot off of the brake when the car was stopped and not in neutral. I first reported this problem to Toyota about a year ago and they said that it was a lubrication and maintenance issue. The tried to charge me 500 dollars for a four-wheel drive service. When I protested that this was not in the manual, they admitted that they lubricated the propeller shaft and that they wouldn't charge this time. Toyota invoice # w55722. Well, that eliminated about 90 percent of the problem, but the "clank" came back in about a month. I have recently read that all limited edition 4runners from 03-06 have this clanking problem, in addition to the Lexus GX-470, that shares the same driveshaft. However, Lexus is fixing the problem while Toyota is playing stupid and saying that it is normal. . Read more...
