In my own words, I have a 2008 Toyota 4runner 4x4 with only 27,000 original miles and the chassis is completely rusted thru, with huge big holes on the chassis. Toyota used some very cheap metal and didn't spray any chassis pretection from rust. The rear driver side shock mount rusted completely that the shock fell off while I was driving, now there is no mount for the shock now. I almost lost control on a curve that was a little bumpy, as I passed the curve my 4runner felt like the back kept sliding, I felt like it was almost about to flip over. There are recalls for all other Toyota SUV but not for Toyota 4runner what's the difference if they used the same metal to make the chassis. My chassis is even more rusted on the front passenger side where the air conditioner has a small drip rubber tube where the air conditioner drops any ac condensation. I don't feel safe driving my 2008 4runner but it only has less than 27,000 original miles. . . Can you. Relive that. I even have pictures and videos to prove it. Smh and I really like my 4runner.

Put the vehicle in h4 mode (4 wheel drive). In a stop position, turn all the way right, or all the way left if you prefer. Accelerate, push on gas pedal. Problem: 1) the car moves in a clunking motion. 2) feels like you are driving with emergency brakes on - but no brakes is on. 3) smells very bad tire burnt smell. 4) if Toyota doesn't fix this problem, its gonna cost more money to fix whatever it causes - gear shaft, ect. . Gets grind or damage. Brought it to the dealership and their mechanics says you can't use 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. What? its a 4 runner! you can drive 4 wheel when you want too. Besides, the problem exist on wet pavement or snow conditions too. How are we suppose to get out of our drive way if this feature doesn't work during snow conditions. Or when you use it, it damages your car - as described above. Dealership mechanic tried this on the new 2017 4 runners that they have there and it has same problem. My 2016 4 runner only has 300 miles. Just bought it two weeks ago 2/17/2017. Bad testing. . This has to be fix. Please recall and make it right. Thanks also - I own a 2004 4runner and it works fine in this senario - doesn't have this problem. But my new 2016 has this problem. Again - bad testing. Please recall and fix this problem Toyota. Thank you.

Vehicle shakes "violently" upon putting brakes while driving at or above 60 mph. I took my vehicle in to Toyota several times for this same problem and they keep telling me it's a brake pad/rotor problem. The first time I took this in to Toyota my vehicle had maybe 28,000 miles, I took it in today 3/20/17 and it has 35,000 and they said the same thing so I took it to a brake repair shop and explained what Toyota had said, the employee and actual owner of the shop told me "I would love to take your money however it will not fix the problem because your brakes and rotors are perfect. That is actually what the another shop employee told me when I took it in back in 2016. I am hoping if anyone else out there has this same problem they will find a solution before something terrible happens to anyone.

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota 4runner. While backing into the driveway, the contact heard a thumping noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact exited the vehicle and discovered the driver side front wheel was detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

I'm an owner of a 2003 4runner and have researched the issues involving the paint on the wheels pealing. I have found that it is an issue with several, if not all wheels that Toyota uses on their 4 runners and other trucks. Why does Toyota continue to sell and use a wheel when they know it is defective, and why aren't they correcting the problem by issuing refunds, or repair services? the defect leads to the wheel being corroded and eventually compromises the integrity of the wheel's strength. The safety of the wheel is a big concern of mine, especially since the problem continues to get worse. Sincerely, ritch shepherd.
Purchased a replacement front wheel hub a bearing from a seller on ebay. The component is advertised and labeled as koyo, the name on the original bearing. After a month the part failed. Learned then that the part is a counterfeit. The same counterfeit item is for sale by several sellers on ebay. This is a critical part and failure could cause severe vehicle damage and an accident endangering lives of passengers in the vehicle and other highway users. Reported to ebay but the items are still being sold.

I do not know if the stopping problem is the brakes, tires, both, or something else. At one point I got new tires and the stopping problem still occurred. My family has been in 3 accidents with other cars and many more incidents by the car itself. When braking in rain/snow/ice and even slight damp roads the car skids forward. We have to keep extra distance in front of now compared to other cars we drive. Also during acceleration on rwd from a stoplight even during dry conditions sometimes the rear tires spin out/burn out/ have no traction.

Frame and under parts are rusted.
Vehicle purchased used July 2011 w/ 45k miles. In may 2012 at 55k had brakes repaired, all 4 wheels new rotors pads and hardware. In 2014 noticed brake fluid leaking from caliper and discoloring wheels. Dealer service verified front calipers frozen (guide pins and pads rusted in place as well as caliper pistons). This appears to be a design flaw as the caliper does not incorporate any protective boot for the guide pins or any interface between the pad shoe and the caliper body. The caliper body and guide pin appear to be easily oxidized, a fact that Toyota attributes to "environmental conditions". Apparently Toyota designs for the mildest conditions rather than the harshest. Oddly, it is only the front caliper with this design: the rear caliper incorporates a more modern design with a boot for the guide bolt.

While daughter was driving on highway. The left front lower ball joint failed causing the wheel assembly to come off the car frame. Speed was the posted 55 mph. No other traffic, thank goodness. Was able to pull off the road for assistance. This is a stupid design. A major component if it fails should not cause this type of catastrophic failure. It dangerous and Toyota should warn the consumer of this stupid design.
Perpetual rear brake failure due to leaking rear axle grease seals which throw grease onto rear brake shoes. Soaking them and rendering them useless and innefective. Causing unsafe braking. According to Toyota dealer, and sears auto service in dover, delaware. , repairs similar to this are being performed on similar vintage Toyota four runner models on a weekly basis. The average repair cost is over $1000,. This appears to be a vehicle manufacturers defect not a standard maintenance issue and could result in injuries or death. I had no brake power in a number of emergency situations, in others my braking distance increased dramatically, in a few cases, I've had the repairs done but the problem has returned,.
My dash is cracked from drivers side to passenger side and it appears to be kind of melting. When I am driving over 50mph and my back window is down it makes an horrible noise but the dealership says its fine not.
My 4 runner shakes while on freeway going passed speed limit of 50mph it feels like I can tip over if going to fast. Some of the electrical things work then not work. It is mostly the shaking back and forth. I have to hold firmly to get it under control somewhat. People notice it when driving behind me. I am scared for my children and I.

Oem standard tires are 225/75r15 on Toyota steel wheels. Oem factory option tires are w/31x10. 5 on Toyota brand aluminum wheels. The factory official sticker shows the option tires as factory-installed. The driver door pillar sticker shows the factory-installed tire as 225/75r15. The pillar sticker is wrong due to defect in the manufacturing process. In reliance on the pillar sticker, a tire technician installed replacement tires based on the standard size. The standard tire is significantly smaller in diameter than the factory option tire. Safety issues: 1) speedometer error ~10%, causing mismatch to posted limit and foreseeable tailgating and other adverse behaviors by surrounding drivers; 2) degraded stability on high-center of gravity SUV due to mismatch between factory option spare tire and replacement tires based on erroneous pillar sticker.
This vehicle has accumulated a scary amount of rust on the underbody. I took it to a local Toyota dealership and they told me it probably wasn't safe to have my kids riding in this vehicle becuase of the amount of rust on the suspension.
While driving today the steering became unstable, erratic, and the car lurched out of my lane into oncoming traffic. A new noise appeared to be coming from rear left tire. When I safely pulled over and inspected vehicle I noted the frame was severely rusted and that the forward welded mount for the lower suspension arm had fractured along the factory weld and was dangling down. This car has never been wrecked. It has been inspected and passed PA state inspections yearly since 2002.

I purchased four (4) new bf goodrich radial long trail t/a size p265/65r17 110t m&s for my 2004 Toyota 4runner in 08/2011. I had approx 10,000 miles on the new tires. Tires are now dry rotted/cracked on the size wall, all around the wheel/frame (on all 4 tires).
Rear axle seals leaking gear oil from rear differential into rear brake drum housing covering brake shoes, drums, and braking components in gear oil. Loss of gear oil in rear differential can cause differential failure as well as failure in rear braking. A notorious issue with 3rd generation Toyota 4runners due to poor engineering of rear axle seals and retainers, therefore failing to properly seal components. Seals begin to leak again soon after; even when repaired, due to poor mating of seal and retainer on axle within the axle housing.
2000 Toyota 4runner has major frame issues that could break at anytime and cause an accident! these frames rust out without the owners knowing. These are family vehicles that are driven for many years and Toyota has had issues with other frames on different models but same year vehicles. Toyota has had numerous complaints on these frames and has never recalled these models. For the safety of my family and others please look into this matter!.
I took my vehicle to the Toyota dealership for the 5,000 mile routine maintenance. While I was there two of the studs on the rear driver's side broke. Because I had recently had new tires on my vehicle the dealership blamed the place who put the tires on. I have gone to the same tire place for over twenty years. When he put the new tires on, he broke one stud but replaced it at his cost. He did warn me that there were other studs that did not look right and that he could see others breaking in the future. This place has changed the tires at least 4 times on this vehicle and are very careful about their work. It is not a chain were employees are constantly changing and their experience may be limited. All of the broken studs were on the same wheel. I researched this issue with Toyota studs online and found numerous postings by individuals who have experienced the same problem. I realize you can find both sides of any issue online but it is obvious that there is a defect with this Toyota part and they do not want to own up to it. I have had chevy blazers and a Nissan pathfinder prior to this and have never had this problem. My concern is that this is going to happen again, possibly causing the wheel to come off when I am driving on the road. I have talked with the dealership as well as Toyota headquarters and they refuse to do anything about this matter. I realized when I pursued this matter that they most likely would not do anything for me but I feel there is a safety issue here and that maybe if enough people take the effort to file a complaint something will eventually get done before something tragic occurs.

While driving on the nys thruway in the vicinity of harriman, NY, the steering began to wander, and the vehicle felt unsafe to drive. I was able to drive a short distance to an auto repair shop, which inspected the 4runner and found extreme rust damage to the undercarriage frame such that it should not be driven again, and could only be scrapped. They observed that the right rear wheel was close to breaking off, which would have resulted in a serious accident where we could possibly have been killed. We were shocked that such a dangerous rust condition could develop in a Toyota 4runner that was only 12 years old, was built and intended for heavy duty use, and had been maintained in strict accordance with the owner's manual. This vehicle had never been driven off-road. We notified Toyota by telephone and letter of this occurrence, and were informed that there had been no recall of this model, and that there was nothing that they would do. A search of the internet showed many reports of similar occurrences for this year and model. We strongly believe that a safety recall needs to be considered.
Frame is rusted badly poor breaking system I had to replace the lines that keeps my Toyota stabilized. I put so much money into my 2004 Toyota 4 runner limited. Now the rust has taken over on sides and under radiator. Transmission lines now leaking badly rust has been an on going problem but when I had it inspecited mechanic brought me out in the garage to show me.
Frame is rusted out around rear control arm brackets. Numerous rust holes in frame. This vehicle is unsafe to drive in this condition and Toyota does not want to do anything about it. I have seen hundreds of the same model vehicle online with this same issue. This needs to be a recall, just like the tacoma frames. Vehicle is in excellent condition and has been well maintained. It is a shame this 4runner is unsafe to drive. Beautiful truck, unsafe frame.
There is corrosion in the frame and drive-train components. There is pitting, rusting throughout the frame undercarriage and the suspension and differential components. This barely 4yr old vehicle is a southern vehicle. Regardless, this corrosion is a safety issue in any vehicle let alone in a 4runner with a service inception date of 11/30/2008 with 19k miles. This is totally irresponsible of the manufacturer and they claim it is not covered by warranty. Yes, it (should be) covered by warranty and more importantly it is manufacturer's liability to correct safety/quality issue.
Vehicle was being parked alongside the curb when it suddenly jumped the curb, the sidewalk onto the uphill grassy landscape, hit and severed a tree, and almost crashed the house inches away, then bounced back to the street- all in about 3 seconds. The tires spun violently and left a thick residue of rubber and thick smoke throughout. The brake was hard and stuck , as I managed to put the stick to neutral and then to park. I was truly shocked and shaken that I could have hurt or killed myself or others. This is the second time this happened- the first in July 22, 2009 when the same acceleration happened when I was moving the vehicle into the garage, surged in about 2 secs. Crashing into the storage and the garage walls. Reference: Toyota claim no. [xxx] (2009) and no. [xxx] (2012). In both cases Toyota disowned any responsibility. While Toyota assures me of the safety of the vehicle, I cannot in my right mind continue to drive this vehicle nor pass it on to somebody else except to return it to Toyota. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
On this vehicle's very first tire rotation, at a reputable tire shop, three lug studs broke off. If you run a net search, you will see a number of similar reports where Toyota 2010 and newer (5th generation) 4runners have lug stud problems--including at early mileage.
I took my vehicle in to the dealer for it's 30,000 mile scheduled maintenance even though it was a couple of thousand miles shy of the required service. They rotated the tires along with the other scheduled services. Shortly afterwards (less than 2 weeks) I noticed that it shimmied on the highway, something it had never done previously. I took the vehicle back to the dealer, dunning Toyota of ann arbor, where they performed another $50. 00 worth of work and I was told that it should be better now, but my tires were cupped so it wouldn't run totally smooth again unless I purchased new tires. I was told that the tire cupping was most likely the result of it being off balance for a while which makes no sense to me since the dealer was the only one that had ever touched it. These tires are supposed to have a life of 50k miles. Be it poor service or poor tires, I'm truly disappointed. I was always under the impression that michelin tires were highly rated. Now I'm not impressed by either the brand name nor dunning.
I own a 2005 toyots 4runner which is rusting on the chassis and rear end housing Toyota tell me that there no recall om the 4 runner or tundra but seqouia is recalled there mus be a complaint filed some where we cannot wait for somebody to die as a result the rear end falling out or front end break away you must check into that just check online for all the complaints.

The contact owns a 1999 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph,the front end of the vehicle and the front passenger side wheel detached from the vehicle. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a ditch and was towed to an independent mechanic but a diagnostic test was not performed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 121,000 and the current mileage was 137,000.
I brought my 4runner in to a reputable tire store for a routine tire rotation. The technician snapped a lug stud. I then had to take the truck to a separate automotive repair shop to have the stud replaced. I attributed the incident to a poorly trained technician. Recently, I brought the truck in for another tire rotation. Again, the technician broke a lug stud. The manager insisted that they always use a torque stick set to factory specifications and that there was no technician error. He also said that the shop had seen this problem with other Toyota trucks of this vintage. I then took the truck to the dealer and, not surprisingly, they said the tire shop was at fault. They said all studs should be evaluated. In doing so they noted that 8 studs were damaged and should be replaced for a total cost over $400. 00. They refused to acknowledge any culpability, said the damage was not warrantable, and I paid the full price for replacement. Looking on the internet I have found multiple complaints about lug studs breaking on 2010-2012 4runners and tacomas. . Read more...
