4 Door Latch problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/18/2006

This vehicle has an automatic unlocking feature that is linked to the shift. Whenever the vehicle is placed in "park, " all 4 doors automatically unlock. The routine in the owners manual to "cancel" this feature does not work. I tried it over 20 times, and took it to the dealer and a local automotive electronics shop - it is just not possible to stop the automatic unlocking. The problem is that this is a threat to safety in many parts of the country, in many kinds of locations. The motorist cannot choose whether to unlock his/her doors, even if a threat is present. This feature makes the motorist vulnerable to car jacking, robbery and many other kinds of crimes.

5 Door Latch problem of the 2002 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/11/2005

The driver's side inside door handle has been broken for over a month. To exit my car, I have to roll down the window and open the car using the outside latch. After recently being held up in traffic because of another car becoming engulfed in flames, I realized that in the event I was involved in an accident I would not be able to exit my car quickly. I have taken it into the dealership three times for repair. The first time it was misdiagnosed. The second and thrid times I was told they were sent the wrong part. I am now waiting for a back ordered part.

7 Door Latch problem of the 1998 Toyota Avalon

The form does not cover what I need to tell you. Our 11 year old son decided to sit in the car and finish eating his breakfast while we went ahead and entered the church on Sunday. My wife pressed the lock button on the fob. My son was totally unable to get the door open when he finished his biscuit. The alarm would sound when he tried to open the locked door and he could not get out. Luckily some other people noticed what was going on and the priest made an announcement in the church and we went out and unlocked him. We all got a good laugh. I can easily see however how this could have turned into a disaster if we had left him in an abandoned parking lot at night, etc. . . No escape. There needs to be a safety release from the inside and Toyota people need to point out this possiblity.
