31 problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1998 Toyota Camry. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Abs, traction lights went on and off.
Sudden accelleration of car. Brakes would not stop vehicle. Had to put car in "park" to stop vehicle. Engine continued to rev as if gas pedal pushed to floor. Dealer can't find anything wrong.
When braking the car make's a loud plane noise and a clicking noise.
While driving stepped on brake pedal while approaching a stop sign and brakes made noise, like grinding metal to metal. Dealer had said that problem was from manufacturer where rotors were built too closely to vehicle body.
While driving 30 mph vehicle accelerated. Consumer applied brakes but did not slow vehicle down. Consumer then shifted to neutral, rpms finally went down and engine stopped revving.
Travelling the freeway, I needed to slow the vehicle but when I started to move my right foot, something held it in place. I lifted my right foot and proceeded to depress the brake pedal but the pedal would not move. I two-footed the brake pedal and heard something crack afterwhich the pedal started to move and I rgained the use of my brakes. An examination revealed a plastic duct wedged between the brake pedal and the floor board. The duct was part of the ventilation system which had fallen off and wedged between the brake pedal and the floor board.
While parking with foot on the brakes . When consumer eased off the brakes vehicle took off.
Brakes are not working.
While driving vehicle at any speed consumer could step on the brake pedal to stop or to slowdown vehicle, but the brakes won't work, and make noise l grinding metal to metal noise.
While parking vehicle took off about a mile per hour, crashing into a wall. Consumer stepped on the brakes, but they did not work, also air bags did not deploy.
Steering colunm pulls to right and vibrates at 70mph fumes from engine go through vents into car cause headaches and upset stomach. Brakes squeak when stopping lound noise.
The brakes on my 1998 Toyota Camry wore out at 15000 miles. The service writer at the service dealer told me that the 1997 and 1998 Camry have a design defect that causes more pressure to be applied to the front brakes than to the back brakes, causing the front brakes to wear out prematurely. My power steering pump developed a leak before it was replaced by the servicing dealer at 19000 miles, causing the vehicle to have steering and control problems.
While driving, the anti-lock braking system malfunctioned without warning, as a result, the engine continued to run without the key in the ignition for five hours. Please provide additional information.

Vehicle ex. Periencing problem with column shift;whenever shifting into drive a click sounds came from the column. Also when applying brakes, and pedal returned to position, a popping sound could be heard, and pedal would be loose. Condition appeared to get worse after vehicle had been sitting still four five days or more. Manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that someone would contact him back,but no words ( mfr. Complaint #199909280711). Asking NHTSA help in this matter.
Anti-lock brake actuator was replaced by the autobody shop which repaired the accident damage.
When applying the brakes, the pedal is soft. The brakes make a lot of noise, and take too long to stop the vehicle. This happens on any type of road surface during normal braking. Dealer is aware of the problem. A brake kit has been ordered to correct the problem.

Took car to dealer in April complaining of hearing noise in front and back and brakes squeaking and had it was actually the brake pedal squeaking. They did an oil change and replaced brakes. After that it is extremely rough ride with vibrations. Sounds like a peace of crap. This car is only 5000 miles new and also after oil change it has never run the same. Cannot accelerate very good. Very very rough drive.
When applying the brake pedal it feels very soft and goes to the floor as if it is not going to stop, and then it suddenly goes into anti-lock brake mode. Dealer has been contacted.
