1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2021

I was driving my 2006 Toyota Camry on a level residential road at 35 mph and stopped at a red light. Upon turning left, the car unexpectedly accelerated at a high speed. I stepped on the brakes but the car did not stop nor slow. I was driving towards a very busy intersection. I tried to shift the gear to park, but the car was still running out of control. I turned left onto a side street in order to avoid the intersection. I was going too fast and jumped the curb, crashed into a Toyota tundra truck parked on the driveway, and ricocheted into the retaining wall of the neighboring property. I was wearing my set belt, the airbag deployed and hit my chest. There were long tire marks on the street and a witness reported the squealing sound of brakes. Paramedics and police arrived immediately. My blood pressure was checked and I was advised to go to the er. In the hospital, I was checked for reflexes, stroke and heart problems and got a x-ray of my chest. Everything was ok and I was sent home after 5 hours, although my chest was severely bruised and painful for about 2 weeks. It took me a month to drive again. I kept thinking about what caused the accident. I am certain that mine was a case of sudden unintended acceleration. While there were over 7 million Toyota cars subject to unintended acceleration recalls from 2005-2012, my 2006 Toyota Camry was not included in these recalls.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2021

The "vsc" continues to come on which in turn causes the ck engine light to come on. There needs to be a recall on this issue. I have been researching it, and finding it a problem for so so many customers.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

On Friday, October 4th (2019) I was waiting in line at a red light (on state street at the intersection with haywood road in asheville, north carolina). Suddenly my Toyota 2006 lurched forward and banged into the car ahead of me. I stomped on the brake. The car stopped, then jumped forward again and banged the car ahead of me again. My husband, sitting in the passenger seat, threw the gear shift into park and our car stopped. As I was just waiting in line at the light when the car spontaneously surged forward, we feel this was a case of Toyota sudden unexpected acceleration. our insurer has appraised the damage to car at just below $3000. We no longer consider this car safe to drive. Our insurer did not require a police report. There were no personal injuries, so police were not called.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2019

On Sunday, April 7th, I was traveling westbound on the southern state parkway at exactly fifty-five mph and exited at exit 17n. The exit ramp there is sloped uphill and parallels taylor road. There is a stop sign at the end of that ramp at hempstead avenue. Just as I was coming to the end of that ramp at very slow speed and almost to that sign, the engine suddenly sped up with extreme acceleration and the car lurched forward. I slammed my foot onto the brake pedal which kept the car from moving further forward and then before I could do anything else, the phenomenon ended and the engine returned to its normal idling speed of approximately 700 rpm on the dashboard tachometer. I drove home and parked the car in my driveway. The following morning, Monday April 8th, I made an appointment for that day to bring the car to a Toyota dealer. As I was preparing for that, I started the car and everything seemed normal. I put it into reverse in order to back out when the engine again suddenly sped up to extreme acceleration. Again, I slammed my foot onto the brake pedal and this time I put the gear shift into park which kept the car from moving further. The tachometer needle was rotated clockwise and well up into the "red" zone which begins at 6000 rpm. In a moment or so, the phenomenon again ended and the engine again returned to its normal idling speed.

Fails to accelerate when the pedal is pressed or revs to quickly when the pedal is pressed-see rk. Found electronic throttle control fault. There is no throttle movement until the accelerator pedal is pressed approximately 1/3 to 1/2 way to the floor. Then the vehicle lurches due to rapid throttle opening to 1/3-1/2. There are no stored diagnostic codes. The vehicle is not going into fail safe mode as it should. With any throttle or accelerator pedal malfunction. The vehicle never entered fail safe mode even after repeated malfunctions. The vehicle is unsafe to drive.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2018

Car was placed in reverse while stopped to parallel park along curb with steering wheel turned slightly to the right. Car accelerator went full throttle with very little driver input. Driver hard pressed the brake to stop, skids marks of rear tires confirm, car kept accelerating, driver turned to avoid a parked vehicle causing the car to aggressively slide sideways up and over the curb while still accelerating. Driver slapped the shifter into neutral and straightened the wheel. The car straightened out and the momentum carried it forward (rather than reverse from the unintended j turn) colliding into a house. Car mileage approximately 71,000. No floor mats in floorboard, no other debris. Air bags did not deploy. No injuries. First reported incident of accelerator (speed control) malfunction.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2014

Vehicle referenced left target, stoughton,MA, parking lot at 12:10pm-11-11-14 (with 7yr old grandson car seated behind driver & driver was in seatbelt). When existing lot, another car backed out of parking space and hit rt, back end of ref car. Driver of ref vehicle looked behind at vehicle that struck her and, as she turned forward & barely stepped on gas to move away from vehicle that hit her, there was a loud clicking noise, tires started spinning and car took off accelerating w/o control of brakes, shift or steering. Ref vehicle hit curb, accelerated up hill from parking lot and went airborne, crashed down into guardrail at approx 45-50mph and airbags did not deploy. Driver is sure ref vehicle would have continued traveling forward if not for guardrail! driver of vehicle (and grandson) were taken in ambulance to hospital and in triage all day. Driver suffered head and eye injuries and hematomas from neck down. Grandson reported slight back pain and was released. Thankfully, neither of ref vehicle's occupants were maimed or died. After much research, found there are 2006 Toyota Camrys with etc issues. Again, no control of any aspect of car - could not put in neutral, gear shift just "floated" over all gears when trying to use! would like for NHTSA to inspect gas pedal for "whiskers" or other problems that led to this. As driver of this vehicle, I can honestly state that I have a great driving record and I am not prone to "driver error" putting foot on gas pedal instead of brake (and accelerating to that distance) and there was no carpet for pedal to stick under. Checked Toyota dealership where my mom purchased this car (she passed prior to this). They informed me that there were no recalls for this VIN#. Makes me wonder about airbag deployment as well. None of this should have happened! any feedback from you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

I have a 2006 Toyota solara, sle, 6 cyl. Eng. , automatic, sunroof. I was driving into a parking space at the mall, slowing down with my foot on the brake. As I pushed on the brake to park, it went to the floor, and my engine surged loudly, hitting the parked car in front of me about 9-12 feet out of it's space. I frantically turned my steering wheel to my left, jumped a curb, went through a few bushes and hit a tree which stopped my car. I turned my key off, placed it in park and threw my keys on to the passenger seat. This car caused the crash. I have never felt anything so strange as I could not stop this car with the brake. It happened in only about 4 seconds. I had the car towed to the dealer, as I didn't want to drive it. I feel it is unsafe to drive until it is fixed by Toyota. I have never had any trouble with my car except some hesitation in moving fast into traffic. Toyota sent an inspector to the dealership to check out the car on 8/17/10. I called to see what the results were and they sent a message by a secretary that nothing was abnormal and it was safe to drive. This car is not safe. I will not allow my insurance to pay for the physical damage until Toyota fixes the brake/acceleration problem. I am lucky that I, or someone else didn't get killed or hurt. Next time it could be different. This crash was not my fault! if all the other cars had these problems, why do they feel the solara isn't included? maybe, this is the first of many solara's. I am disappointed that Toyota doesn't respond to customer's better. All they have to do is fix it and it's over. I'm not so confident in any of their products as of now. I didn't realize so many people have the same story, they all can't be lying! thank you for letting me send in this complaint. I'm sure I will have a fight on my hands.

26 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

Hesitation problem in 2006 Toyota Camry. Happens frequently. Failure to be able to accelerate in these situations can result in a rear or side collision from oncoming vehicles, especially during a merge. It happens when backing off on the gas pedal, such as when the car is about to make a turn onto another street, or when gaining on slower traffic on the highway. The rpm go way down as the car slows (by backing off the gas pedal - no brakes applied) to deal with the situation. Once the turn is completed, or the traffic in front starts to pull ahead again, the car does not respond to applying the accelerator. It can take from a half second to two full seconds before the car "recognizes" that it is being told to speed up - for it to give more rpm and to pick the right gear to do it in. It seems to be trying to make up its mind which gear to use before it adds enough rpm to accelerate. It's like the rpm went down so low when backing off the gas pedal that the car doesn't know what to do when it's told to get back to work. When it finally responds, the engine usually kicks down one or two gears and starts racing to catch up - like the driver has floored it, without having floored it. The dealership has said they couldn't recreate the problem. Toyota denies the problem exists. Yet it happens every day. I believe both are covering up a problem.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2010

I was driving my car under my carport. When touched the accelerator to slowly enter the carport, the car accelerated on its own. It jump and took off. I tried to put the car in park and it kept going. I feared it would keep going across my yard, so I prepared to jump out by opening the door and sticking my leg out. The open door hit a support pole on my carport and my leg was injured. Luckily my final attempt to brake stopped the vehicle.

33 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

I was pulling slowly into a parking space in front of an office building. When I gently applied the brake, the car suddenly zoomed forward and struck the front of the building, shattering a large glass window and its frame and area around it. This stopped the car. I put it into reverse and backed into the parking space. The air bag did not inflate. Fortunately, the occupant of that office had just left. Otherwise she would have been hit by flying glass. I had never before had trouble of this kind with this Toyota. The damage was repaired, but I sold the car to the auto body shop.

35 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2010

I have Toyota Camry -2006 model which was bought new in Feb 2006. It has approx 32,000 miles on it mostly driven by myself, 37 year man as of today and my wife(31 years) also drives sometimes since last two years. Last Sunday 01/31/2010 my wife , myself and my two sons were inside car and my wife was driving this car and was stopping car in drive way. We were almost stopped and suddenly it accelerated and my wife was screaming that it is not stopping even she almost standing on brakes. Meantime it hit closed garage door and went inside garage with high speed. Right mirror went inside the garage wall and finally its car front hit base of gas-water heater and car stopped. Windshield was fully damaged, upper hood was bended, right mirror was broken and front of car was also hit but airbag did not pop up because right side mirror could have reduced speed before front hit gas-water heater. Big tragedy was avoided because water heater was gas based and it was on. Also right side both doors were touched to wall so cannot be opened. My two sons 2 years and 8 years were inside care and left side back door had child lock so only door can be opened was driver side which my wife was driving and she was scared to death with this incident. Luckily fire did not start and we all were able to come out safely. I called local Toyota dealer twice and he refused to listen me saying this car 2006 Camry is not part of Toyota recall and if you have to report this incident call Toyota's corporate number. I call Toyota number twice and they also mentioned that this model is not part of recall. I clearly told them that I wanted to report this incident so other people will know that something could happen with this model car also. At the sametime I called my auto insurance company and they advised me to tow car to repair facility. As of now repair is in progress and I am expecting to get car by end of next week. I would like NHTSA to investigate this type of incident.
