1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2023

We (my wife and I) were driving our vehicle Sunday November 5th 2023 in the morning and experienced a serious issue. While on the highway, the car was stuck with the gas petal in the down position (we did not realize this until after we were able to successfully power down the car) and continued to accelerate in an uncontrolled manner. We were fortunate that our breaks were able to stop the car, and we navigated it to the shoulder of the highway. We then put the car in park, all while the engine was full throttled. We powered down the car and removed the keys. We waited a few moments and tried to power the car again - the engine however remained full throttled. We turned the vehicle off once again and then realized the gas petal was stuck in the down position. We were able to manually get the petal unstuck at this time. We have not driven the vehicle since this incident and consider it too dangerous to do so. Since this incident, we have looked up any potential recalls for this issue and have not found any. To answer the questions above: the gas petal/acceleration malfunctioned. The safety of everyone in the vehicle and other drivers on the road were at significant risk. The vehicle has not been driven since, and the issue has not been reproduced. No recalls were found for this VIN. The vehicle has not been inspected since the incident, but otherwise has passed inspection in our state. There were no warning lamps or messages on the vehicle before or after the incident. We believe the manufacturer is responsible for addressing the issue, even though there is not a recall for this particular problem. This is a known issue by the manufacturer, as they have released many recalls for similar models/years and have even created a video on youtube to instruct drivers how to address this issue, if it happens, while driving.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2021

The brake & abs lights started coming on although there was no apparent problem. Then, when those lights illuminate on the instrument panel, the speedometer & tachometer stop working. Often, the needles will bounce or they will just set at zero. This can occur at any speed & on all road conditions. This does not affect cruise control in anyway. I can set & stop the cruise control at any time. Eventually, it starts working again but it is totally random. Now, the air conditioning stops working when the abs & brake lights are on. The high beam instrument panel lights are also affected. The headlights work but the instrument panel does not always reflect this or it shows that high beams are on when they are not & vice versa. My mechanic could not identify the source of the problem. My research shows that the abs module is defective & the problem occurs in 2007-2009 Camrys. Apparently, this problem can be bypassed by disengaging the abs module, but obviously, that creates other issues. I have video of this activity but I am unable to upload it here.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Toyota Camry. While driving approximately 55 mph on the highway, the vehicle accelerated on its own at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that there was engine failure due to NHTSA campaign numbers: 10v017000 (vehicle speed control) and 09v388000 (vehicle speed control). The previous owner did not have the recall repairs performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to Toyota world of newton (66 hampton house rd, newton, NJ 07860, (973) 383-0200) and both recall repairs were performed. The vehicle was still at the dealer until the manufacturer determined if they would authorize the engine assembly replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. 9 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

We have an intermittent reoccurring issue when vehicle us driven before full warm-up (10 minutes or longer). The issue is when accelerating from a zero rpm (stop light) scenario, the vehicles rpms go up high, but the the car moves very slowly. As if it's not in sync with the gas pedal when being pressed. Transmission failure has been tested and not noted. Due to the intermittent nature of the problem, we have taken drastic measures, such as installing a remote start to bring vehicle to temperature before driving. This could be extremely dangerous if the cut out of the acceleration happens when merging onto a highway or causing rear impact to unsuspecting drivers. Car has been inspected at local dealer, where they were not able to replicate the issue, but I want this documented shall any accident ever occur due to speed control failure.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2013

I have a Toyota Camry 2009. My car went through the recall services, Toyota had for the acceleration problems through one of their dealers. However, on 02/08/2013, I was involved in an accident, wherein I felt this problem myself. On a busy road I may have been driving between 35-40 mph, when all of a sudden, when I applied brakes, my car wouldn't stop but accelerated to maybe double the speed and hit the car in front of me. It appeared as if there are no brakes in the car. The impact was so severe, that I am still nervous and shaken up with the incident. The person driving the car I hit, thought I was speeding. But it definitely was the acceleration problem. This problem has not yet resolved and could lead to many more accidents. I have reported this problem to Toyota dealership and on their suggestion to the Toyota customer experience team. I was extremely lucky, that there were no physical injuries in the accident, but it could have been fatal.

26 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2011

On December 4, 2011, with my wife and returning from a visit to our children, I was driving our 2009 Camry east from brooklyn in the left lane about a mile onto the jackie robinson parkway at about 4:30 p. M. , visibility very good and road dry. Traffic was heavy but moving about 35-40 m. P. H. When it slowed a little in front of me I put on the brake-- but the car speeded up. I repeated the braking and the car speeded up even more. These two attempted braking occurred in about 5 seconds. I saw we would crash into the car ahead. I tried to steer mainly into the space between that car and the one in the right lane so as to minimize damage to them, but the car in front of me went a little faster. Our car, having hit the right-lane car in its left rear, went past that car and into the opened-up space and the shoulder, and into an about three-plus-foot concrete retaining wall, hitting it at an angle with the right front of our car, which mounted the wall on our right-hand wheels and came to a stop there. Air bags had not deployed but tensioned seatbelts hit us hard in the chests. We managed to get my door open and get out. The car was totaled, with about 12,000 miles on it, always carefully maintained. I would add that when Toyota recalled the car in 2010 I brought it in for the adjustments and was interested to learn from the mechanic at the dealership that the adjustments would take awhile because they required modifications to the car's computer. Also, I as well as my wife have been driving, each of us for nearly 50 years, with exemplary records, and neither of us has ever pressed the gas pedal when we meant to step on the brakes. We are writing to you in the hope that still other Toyota customers will not have to suffer the upset that we still feel, or of course worse. (I sent this to you via pdf earlier today. ).

28 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

On the morning of oct 22 '10 , I was on my way to work when suddenly my 2009 Toyota Camry accelerated, I tried applying the brakes, however to no avail. . I tried to steer the car out of the way due to it was a busy intersection . . It finally came to a stop when it crashed head on into a vehicle ( after crashing into 2 more on the way), the airbags never deployed, also note that I had taking it a few months back for the recall; I was bruised , however the mental scars which are the worse, cannot be seen, constantly thinking of what could have been, I'm reporting this incident because even though I would never want anyone to go thru what I went thru, unfortunately it will continue to happen if nothing is done about it, I am urging the NHTSA and any other entities that have the power, to keep the roads & the public safe, this is an urgent matter and hopefully something drastic can be done before we lose more lives.

32 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2010

I was pulling into a restaurant parking lot and had found a handicapped space for my wife. The car was slowly inching forward with my foot on the brake controlling its forward motion. Suddenly it lurched forward, over a curb and into a handicap sign support pole, which in turn bent forward and knocked a cast stone statue against a painted panel attached to the restaurant wall. I was pushing down on the brake the entire time.

34 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2010

While stopped at a traffic light, the engine of my 2009 Toyota Camry raced uncontrollably. While keeping the car braked, I shifted first to neutral and then to park, during which time the engine simply continued to accelerate further. Once in park, I turned off the ignition and everything shut off. After this, I was able to get the car to the dealer (champion Toyota, philadelphia, PA), which performed the recall repairs (gas pedal and computer reprogram) immediately.

35 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2010

My 2009 Toyota Camry. Until today, I thought this might be a big hoax, but it happened today at 2:55 pm on my way to work. My car accelerated without warning. I fortunately was only traveling on a side road for a brief moment and was able to hit the brakes and shift into neutral and then stop the car. About 2 weeks ago I had the "recall" correction completed. Never had an issue prior to this "correction".
