1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2024

Over the 10 years I have owned this car, it has failed to start about a dozen times. 1/2 the time I am at home and 1/2 the time I am away from home. Sometimes if you wait a few hours it will then start, often times it has to get towed to the dealer. Upon arrival at the dealership, it usually starts. The Toyota dealership has been unable to correctly diagnose the problem. As such, I spend money on repairs that do not actually fix it. The latest "diagnosis" is that the steering lock actuator motor needs to be replaced. Cost about $900. There is no guarantee that replacing this part will fix the problem. Calls to Toyota corporation go unreturned. I call them, log a case, the case is closed without a response. Rinse and repeat. Has happened three times already. Clearly they do not care. This is a very serious problem. Below is just the latest incident that happened on 10/15/2024.

2 Equipment problem

Shudder while driving and shifts hard.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2024

Hello, I just bought this used Camry from its original owner on 6/10/24. There is a recall for the 2012-2014 Camrys for a transmission shudder that could occur while accelerating, especially under light loads between 25-50 mph. The issue is caused by a combination of a faulty torque converter and a software glitch in the engine control module (ecm). The original owner did not have it fixed. Thus, the problem still exists. This is a safety hazard and I contacted Toyota north America who told me that they can't do anything. However, to fix the problem that Toyota issued the recall themselves, Toyota dealers need to replace to the torque converter and update the ecm software. I am reaching out to the NHTSA because this is a safety hazard and I hope you are able to help me with this. Thank you.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2024

Tire pressure monitoring system - light flashes on-off and then remains illuminated. Toyota dealer wants $1,200 to replace all sensors. I do not have the ability to pay this. Dealer suggests that I just ignore or cover up. This system is a safety system as marketed by the manufacturer. I feel uncomfortable driving over mountainous routes without it. My tire dealer tells me that this is a constant problem with Toyota's.

Transmission shudder when driving.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2023

I own a 2014 Toyota Camry there is a known issue with the 2012-2014 Toyota Camry models for the torque converters failing. In December of 2023 I noticed my vehicle not changing gears as smoothly as it normally does so I took my vehicle to my local Toyota dealership and was told that I needed by torque converter replaced and it would be $2800. Upon my research I found out that this is a known issue for this make and model and Toyota had a warranty enhancement program for this to be fixed but it ended in 2022. I was never informed of this program and if this is a known issues and they can verify that I haven't had this repaired before then my vehicle should be fixed at the expense of Toyota. I paid the $2800 because I was told not replacing it could cause transmission problems down the road. I called Toyota and sent them proof of ownership, proof of payment for the repair and they refuse to reimburse me in any way. Can someone please look into this for me?.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2022

The radio/navigation system in my vehicle malfunctioned during a self starting update. My screen now stays in reboot mode. The problem is, the screen stays at full brightness whenever the car is on at night I can’t see very well to drive. The other night I was coming home with me and my kids in the car and I hit the ditch trying to turn because the screen was so bright it impaired my vision. The screen never goes off as long as the car is running and there is way to adjust the brightness.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2022

The touch screen needed to pair a bluetooth device for hands free usage does not work. It is not responsive to touch in any way, preventing users from pairing devices. From the looks of online forums, this is a pervasive problem for this make/model. If handsfree use is required in my state, this malfunction should be covered by warranty / Toyota recall. The entire device is inoperable.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2022

Excellent.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

Car has been vibrating anytime it goes above 40-45 mph. Mechanic recommended to change the cv axle which I did and I still have same problem. On highways it shakes so much that sometimes it feels like I may loose control of my steering wheel. There's a knocking sound while going on bumps and speed breakers. Check engine light came twice and it was reset by saying its false positive.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2021

My vehicle’s radio buttons/screen no longer function along with the buttons on my steering wheel. This creates a problem as I use the hand free option on many occasions. It’s come to my attention I am not the only person this has happened to.

12 Equipment problem

Deley shift.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2021

Transmission issue delay shifting. . . From reverse to drive.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2021

I own a 2014 Toyota Camry with 163,000 miles. For years, I’ve experienced a noticeable shudder and vibration around 40–50 mph, which I now understand is a common defect related to the torque converter and addressed in a Toyota-issued TSB (t-sb-0168-14). I was never notified of this bulletin, despite having my car serviced regularly. Toyota and its dealers consistently failed to inform me of this issue, and now that I’m just over the mileage cap, they are refusing to assist. I feel deceived and upsold on unnecessary repairs when a known, more affordable fix existed. This is an unethical practice and a known problem that needs further federal investigation.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2021

I was hung up upon by a representative of service advocacy illedgely at manufacturers headquarters when advocating problems with manufacturers representatives on phone and /or in person about vehicle and/or maintenance , warranty concerns from 11/30 to approximately 2. 00pm, in general. Terms by its staffabroad and here and future world wide. But not including more issues with vehicle and/or treatment of representatives of vehicle. The question response to answer under "note" is unknown. Total disatisfaction with manufacturer and worldwide dealerships. These and possibly more incidents happened prior to 11/31/20.

16 Equipment problem

Drivers seat where the controls are located covering plastic broke and not able to snap back in place. Also notice this on my mothers 2015 Camry as well.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2020

I attempted to stop my vehicle at the end of a driveway when I saw fast approaching cross traffic. My engine began racing and my brakes failed, carrying my vehicle about 20 feet into the intersection as I helplessly pressed down on the brake pedal. Fast approaching vehicles barely missed me. I barely escaped violent death.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2020

I have a 2014 Toyota Camry a while ago the actuator of the driver's door began to fail but now there are 2 more doors that do not work and I have 3 of the 4 doors that do not work.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2020

Iphone 11 will not sync with bluetooth in Camry. Apple and Toyota blame each other but it has worked perfectly on my previous iphones. Creates serious safety issue due to no handsfree availability.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2020

The touchscreen on the audio head unit does not function properly. I cannot pair a phone with the car's audio system because the on-screen buttons are unresponsive. This is a safety issue. I cannot use hands-free calling because I cannot pair a phone with the audio system. I started noticing issues with the touchscreen in 2018, but I was able to work around the issue. In 2020, however, I can no longer pair mobile devices to the audio system. Toyota is aware of this issue. It is widespread among several vehicle models from 2012-2014.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2019

I was driving southbound on us highway 141in wisconsin, just north of the lineville rd exit. I was going the speed limit approx. 70 mph. The temp. Was in the 60s and the sky was overcast with no precip. There was little traffic and I was on a flat stretch of road with no vehicles directly in front or behind. There was no construction and/or road equipment in sight. I had not driven under any structures. Suddenly my sunroof exploded above my head. The sunroof was closed and the interior screen was pulled shut. I did not see any objects or animals, only glass flying in the rearview mirror. It was a terrifying sound, like a shotgun blast. I pulled off at the nearest exit in a towing area and saw that there was a big hole in the glass and shards of shattered glass on top of the interior screen, which had been pulled shut. I called 911 and explained what happened. Two brown county wis. Officers came and looked at the damage and assessed there had not been any kind of gun shot. The officers documented the call. I was forced to drive holding the inside screen with one hand holding it shut, so it would not blow open, for approximately 40 miles to meet my husband and switch cars. I felt very unsafe and was shaken, as I had never experienced anything like this before. I have read, online, that there have been many other similar incidents and I believe it is a Toyota manufacturing defect and safety issue. I called Toyota and reported the incident but they said my car did not qualify for any current "programs" and it was my responsibility to repair. Fortunately I was not cut by glass, but was badly shaken to the point of feeling nauseated for hours afterwards.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2019

The touchscreen has completely gone out and you can no longer use touch to access car settings - therefore not being able to change key features on the car. A couple examples would be automatically locking and unlocking the car, and dimming screen brightness for safer driving at night. The screen has gradually gone out over time and officially quit October 2019.

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2019

My car gets stuck at 40 mph when pressing on gas I have been taking it back and forth to dealer since I purchased it and they can find nothing wrong.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

I originally bought a vehicle from carbone Subaru of troy NY on 11/27 2018. (complaint originally submitted December, 2019). The car was a lemon. I finally got a replacement vehicle (with clean carfax) on 12/31/18. On 8/30/19, car was totaled due amount of mold found everywhere in the car, icluding roof and spare tire in trunk. I called carbone Subaru several times and was ignored. I finally got ahold of melinda @ lithia motor group hq in oregon. I was told she would call me back within a week. Over 3 weeks later and several attempts I got ahold of her. I explained to her I complained about the horrific odor in the car to my salesperson and to a mechanic, and was given an air freshener. I was told that I bought the car in winter, and water is a summer problem, and they would only help me if I bought a 3rd car from them. I now have to follow up with a pulmonary specialist for the next several years to check for mold related health problems. It has also cost $150 in doctor CO-pays so far, $500 in insurance deductible, $1,500 for down payment and expenses for having to buy another car after 8 months of owning the 2014 Camry. I have several pictures of the mold found in Camry, the complete loss statement by insurance, the $20,000+ estimate to remediate the mold, and medical documentation.

25 Equipment problem

2014 Toyota Camry. Consumer writes in regards to dissatisfaction with the voice recognition function. The consumer stated the voice recognition function does not register the correct name when making a phone call.

26 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2019

The front door locks no longer operate by remote. This is not a remote problem since my rear door locks do respond. I believe the front door lock actuators have failed on both the driver and passenger sides. The repairs for this will cost hundreds of dollars. There is currently a class action lawsuit in California. I think this is a wide spread problem.

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2019

While car was going 30-35mph, I had to slow down due to traffic. Letting go of the accelerator was fine, but when I pressed the accelerator again, car stalled under low rpm for 2-3 seconds. This happened back in may and it was just sometimes. But now it's been happening everyday on low speeds and low rpm. Idling is fine, car is always in operating temperature when stalling happens (so I know this is not related to cold engine). I called Toyota and they're not sure what could cause it.

Vehicle have no engine check light. But hesitates n vibrates between 2 and 3 gear.

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2018

Start to have the following problem on 12/20/2018 get up to 20 mph hard shift and then up to 40 mph has a vibration and then after between 45 and 55 mph it drive normal. Noticeable hesitation when accelerating and shifting occurs between 30-32 mph. Hesitate to accelerate between 2nd and 3rd gear when taking off, it mostly happen when the engine is first starting out from stop, afterward it fine gears shifts correctly and the idle control guage is normal between gears. I took the car to the local Toyota dealer on 01/03/2019, the technician took the car for drive test and he said its a torque converter problem. They changed the torque converter part; on 1/05/2019 I went to the dealer to pick up the car and after driving for few minutes, I noticed the same problem. I retook the car to the Toyota dealer for the same problem, and the same technician took for the test drive, and this time he said it has internal delay on second gear. I am not sure what's the problem, but they advised I need to change the transmission. After doing some research I found the following online. "cars equipped with an automatic transmission might experience a hesitation when accelerating. Revised software for the on board computer is available which may correct this problem. Software revisions are commonly most helpful on newer vehicles. Once the mileage builds up a worn component could cause similar problems. Whenever major transmission work in performed, the transmission software should be updated as necessary". I am taking my car on 01/07/2019 to update the software and see if that can fix the problem.

31 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2018

Got into accident, my front bumper was damaged bad but none of my airbags deployed.

32 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2018

Replaced the torque converter before 57,000. According the the service ad visor this was a problem that Toyota knew about and never issue a recall. My car VIN was on a list. I was driving on a highway at 60 miles and notice the odometer won't move. It won't accelerate over 60 mph. The dealer change the torque converter but still having problems. The dealer won't give me a copy of the repair.

33 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

My sunroof exploding out of nowhere on the highway while I was going 75 mph and I there was no car in front of me I was on the left lane but there was a semi on the right line 6 car lengths in front of me.

34 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

When driving the left wheel vibrates around 20-40mph, especially in rainy weather and bearing to the left. While accelerating to merge on highway lots of non stop vibration from left wheel.

35 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2018

For almost a year now, I have been smelling a mildew odor coming from my vents. I vacuumed the interior carpets with baking soda and sprayed the vents with lysol. I checked under the hood and under the car for any leakage. Nothing. I also changed my cabin air filter again. No positive results. My last option was to google Toyota odor complaints and bingo, other complaints about this issue. This certainly is a problem that Toyota should address and repair, without cost to the car owner.
