Automatic Emergency Braking problems of the 2018 Toyota Camry

When I am driving on a 4 lane hwy and I am in the left lane and a car in the right lane stops on the side of me my car stops also by itself . This is very dangerous . Someone can rear end me and cause a major accident. This is putting me and possibly someone else’s life in danger. I took it to team Toyota in baton rouge. One technician drove it and it did it for him. They performed software updates. Test drove it several times and said it did not do it for them. Paid over $800. On my way home it did it again, complete stop on its own when a car next to me stopped. Took the car back to team Toyota the next morning. They did test drive and it did it several times with them. Team Toyota still has my car waiting on a regional field tech to come look at my car. While operating the vehicle, the automatic transmission failed to respond and jerked the vehicle at low speed upshifting from 1st to 2nd gear initially. After engaging 2nd gear, vehicle demonstrated loss of power while in motion until system provide engine light warning and other safety messages which had been disabled such as automatic braking system disabled as well as lane departure warning disabled. The vehicle began to limit drivable speed during highway operation which prompt exiting to service or frontage road at which point when the vehicle came to a complete stop, the vehicle would not advance or reverse and was towed from road to a safe location.

Shifted the operating car from park to drive when the car suddenly and unexpectedly took off even though I was not touching the accelerator. The car accelerated across the street and slammed into a parked car. The airbags did not deploy which would indicate a low-speed but the pre-collision system did not stop the car which would indicate higher- speed. My car was written off as a complete loss by my insurance carrier and the damage to the parked car that was hit was extensive.

Multiple issues with radar sensors- disable parking assist, lane assist and rear traffic sensors due to constant malfunctioning - battery has been replaced twice within the past 6 months - vacuum pump for automatic break assist replaced April 2024 - automatic brake assist failed while on vacation and car had to be driven without assisted breaks from new orleans to jackson ms for repair - car can only be driven in sport mode otherwise there is concerning jerking and rough gear change and acceleration lag, this issue has been addressed since the date of purchase but no serious concerns expressed by maintenance professionals. Car has been having major issues now since approximately mid to latejuly 2024 more issues began - rough, fluxuating idle while parked and while driving - battery replaced, air filter replaced, spark plugs replaced, O2 sensors (both) replaced, throttle body replaced, idle air control sensor replaced; all just over the course of 4 months- car sputters and rattles after getting gas - has died after being gassed up 3 separate times since August 2024- maf sensor was the last part considered the potential culprit- order replacement and installed, check engine light immediately came on after installation po607 ecm- removed new maf sensor and reinstalled old one- code was able to be cleared- waiting on another replacement maf sensor- too many codes have been thrown too list here but all parts have been replaced to "fix" the issues without success. Car stalls at redlights and stop signed. Sputters and idles erratically after filling with gas. Idle fluctuates when in park. Car has been well maintained and is my daily driver. I have 3 children and have been stranded at gas stations twice with [xxx] in generally unsafe locations during evening hours since August. The vacuum brake pump assembly malfunctioned and I had the vehicle taken to the dealer that did the original recall for the vacuum brake pump assembly and they inspected the vehicle and told me that was the issue along with the nipple inside the pump had broken off and fell down into the engine and had damaged the cam shaft. Exactly what the recall states. Yes the vehicle can and has been inspected its at the dealer still and has been since 06/12/2024 when this occurred. The safety of my wife and daughter and any other people in any vehicle in front of mine due to the brakes got extremely hard to push and the vehicle would not stop properly. Almost plowed into a Jeep wrangler that was in front of her when trying to pull into the grocery store. Yes the dealer butler Toyota the service manager thomas is the person I have been directly dealing with and he has tryed to contact Toyota to get an answer and they wont give an answer. He has even contacted his southwest Toyota service contact and they have tryed to get some info for me but no answers. The vehicle has been inspected by the service manager and a technician from butler Toyota and thats where all my service and the recall was done. There was no warning or messages before this but when the pump went out and the brakes would not stop the car there is a message in the info center now that this occurred. My wife and daughter was on there way home from dance and was stopping by the grocery store when she went to stop she couldnt almost rammed the back of a Jeep in front of her. She pulled into the parking lot turned the car off and called me. When I arrived about 15 minutes later there was I thought brake fluid all under the car. I then had another person ask if I needed help and I asked him would he help me push the car just about a foot or so backwards to see what was leaking. When I put my finger in it it was motor oil. I immediately told my wife that it was not drivable and took the vehicle to butler Toyota.

I have notice for the past year when I’m driving the car around the city around 15-30mph the emergency auto braking system alarm sounds and shows on my dash board when I have nobody in front of me luckily the car doesn’t brake at all but is not normal for it to do that it just happens randomly maybe this year alone it happen 5 times. Nobody safety was put at risk the car doesn’t brake or anything but it just sounds the alarm to brake, like 100% of the time is a low speeds. I haven’t taken it to the dealer, and I have no warning lights nothing at all is just random.

Pulling into parking stall in front of a store at a slow speed and my Camry hybrid unexpectedly accelerated and lurched forward. I could not stop the car and the car hit the building at the end of the parking stall.

I am writing this letter because, on August 1, 2023, my wife, and I, were involved in an accident with our 2018 Toyota Camry, which may have been due to sudden unintended acceleration, a defect which affected Camry owners for over 10 years, and is still happening. Most of these accidents occurred when the driver was pulling slowly into a parking space and their car suddenly accelerated strongly and couldn’t be stopped by hitting the brakes. The car only stopped when it hit a solid object. This often resulted in serious injuries, even death. On August 1, my wife was driving the Camry (I was in the front passenger seat) and she was in the process of slowly pulling into a parking space at parkside town commons in cary, with her foot on the brake. Without warning, the car suddenly accelerated and she was unable to stop it by hard braking. The car jumped the curb in front of it and climbed a landscaped incline, only stopping when it crashed into a wrought iron fence in front if it. There were no vehicle warning messages prior to the accident. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the Camry had over $6,000 in damages and the fence was bent badly where the car hit it. We called the cary police and a police report was made. No tickets were issued by the cary police. Our Toyota dealer referred us to a higher level Toyota office that deals with special vehicle problems, which we called. We reported the accident, they said it would be reviewed. We have had no response from thetoyota higher level office since. Though the damage was repaired, we are very worried that if our Camry has a sudden unintended acceleration defect, we could suffer another such accident anytime. It is very critical to have our vehicle inspected for such a flaw, whether in electronics, the throttle, brakes, or anything else. As this problem is an important safety issue, we feel the need to have it checked out. Would appreciate your assistance.

2018 Camry xse brakes go on while on drive pressing on the break would be a struggle when driving padal on the brake were stiff hard to step on even after dealership provided the service for the recall vehicle still had issues automatic emergency go on for no reason while backing up the vehicle sensors are detecting human or item that are not there. Screen on vehicle marks see dealership for maintance. 2 days after it was held for 2weeks there for maintance.

System malfunction.

The car is currently bricked and I am receiving messages on dash telling me power brakes are not functioning and parking brakes unavailable low power braking also electronic issues with my front camera is not functioning but I don’t have a front camera.

Brake light switch failure causing loss of break lights and other safety features such as emergency stopping, lane change notification, loss of anti-lock brakes,and other safety features.

I bought my Camry with 5 miles on it. It’s a 2. 5l 8 speed Camry se. Immediately I felt something not right when it would shift between 3/4 gear. It would rock back and forth in a jerking motion. The car has trouble shifting in automatic. When putting it into sport mode it automatically starts at 4th geer. It’s as if the gear shifters are not able to communicate with the engine. It’s stall on me when making a turn and I was almost t-boned June of 2018! finally a recall on the fuel pump. I go take it in immediately to have the recall fix. Upon doing so the mechanic informed me that my vacuum pump seems to be bigger than the one that standard for my car. He said there’s no recall for my VIN number but for other cars during that same year there is. So there was nothing I could do but wait for my VIN number to be on the recall list. Then in June 2021 I was backing out of a parking spot and there was a truck in my rear cross traffic that was approaching, my Camry sensed the vehicle with it sonar sensor the alert went off and my braking assistance worked accordingly but the system failed to get the communication clearly to the engine which in return did not slow down the acceleration of the throttle. So I backed into a truck and my son and myself were in the vehicle. No airbags were dispensed. No injuries but damages to my trunk lid, tail light, brake light and number were damaged. My car now has airbag malfunction and the steering assistance is working correctly.

I was going home from houston to richmond texas but a few minutes into driving some warning lights came on and a warning message says secondary brake system malfunction. Then all of a sudden the steering wheel was almost locked and was very hard to maneuver. But due to safety of where I was driving I tried hard to reach a Toyota service center nearby which was about to close so I decided to drive to another one nearby my home. A week or so later they said the car was inspected and repaired but on my way home after picking up the car I had to return it again and since then which has been approximately a month now the car is still in service waiting for parts. The safety of others and mine was at risk as the steering wheel was very tough to maneuver. The problem was confirmed by the dealer. The vehicle component was inspected by Toyota service worker and they said they also had it checked by the manufacturer personnel. There were no prior warning or symptoms prior to this incident which happened on may 24, 2021.

Car put emergency brakes without any car in front me and my wife was scared why it braked. If car is drove more than 65 mph car start to shake that it will flip over and even experience mileage drop in first when we use to fill the tank up it shows 400 miles now we fill the same gas and same amount of gas it says 320 miles or 350 sometimes most scary part is when the car try to shake when you're try to take over on highway above 65 mph how Toyota find the solution for it my car just have 38k on meter when we took it to the Toyota dealership they said everything is okay with the car and the sad part it is the dealership doesn't inform us that their is a recall on the fuel pump then they said we have diagnosed you're car their is nothing wrong so I asked them do my car gas a recall on it they said nope then I pulled up nhsta recall paperwork for my Camry 2018 it's such a disappointment that dealership gamble with you're life that's all hope this matter will be looked into thank you.

My automatic emergency braking system has been going off even when a car is nowhere near, today I was involved in an accident due to the automatic emergency braking system. When going to yield, the warning light came on, and it felt like the car stalled, I could not manually brake and it resulted in me rear ending the person in front of me.

Vehicle should have automatic emergency braking safety feature when vehicle is driving in “reverse”. I made a very careless and dangerous mistake because I was in a rush and placed my vehicle in “reverse” instead of “park”, immediately after parking on the street in front of my friend’s house. Not realizing the vehicle was in reverse, I quickly opened the driver’s side door and placed my left foot on the street as I was getting out. Suddenly, the moving vehicle and opened driver’s side door knocked me down on the street and continued to drive in reverse crushing my body. The vehicle should have stopped the moment it hit something or before it hit something. Instead, the vehicle smashed me against the pavement, rolled right over me, and then continued in reverse at a rapid speed. At the same time, my friend was getting out of the front passenger side and was almost pinned against a telephone pole that the opened passenger side door hit, but thankfully she got out of the way just in time. The car, however, continued running in reverse. Another friend had to run down the street and literally jump in the driver’s side to quickly place his foot on the brakes. I was still laying injured on the street in agony, and sustained multiple injuries.

Vehicle was involved in a rear-end collision. Vehicle did not brake before impact manually neither did the brake assist activate. There were no signs of braking assist malfunctioning. Vehicle caught fire upon impact and not available for inspection. Vehicle given to insurance company and settled. Injury to driver of vehicle in question. Driver of vehicle hit and went to er by ambulance. There is a report filed of accident.

Abrupt activation of brakes: new vehicle to present. When first backing out of garage or parking spot, at a slow-creeping speed, without use of throttle pedal, attempting to control backward motion with light brake pedal the vehicle's brakes will abruptly active fully halting rearward motion. Further rearward motion requires driver to completely remove foot from brake pedal but any attempt to control rearward speed by feathering brake pedal often causes a repeat of the abrupt brake activation. This cycle repeats the full length of the vehicle within the garage and the length of the driveway to the street , additionally 5 to 6 times the vehicle length. The problem manifests after a lengthy parking, in both forward and reverse directions. There is often an accompanying discernible mechanical actuator sound coming from the engine compartment that I associate as a trigger to expect the abrupt braking. The obstacle warning may alarm in the garage but acknowledging it with ok does not effect the abrupt braking cycle which continues the length of the driveway, clear of any obstructions. To be clear, this problem occurs at very slow speeds, about 2 miles per hour. I have been told by the dealership mechanic that the brakes are designed to operate as conventional hydraulic brakes below 5 mph; this of course doesn't explain the actuator noise emanating from under the hood. Once the vehicle has been on the road, the brake's performance improves with only a slight tendency to grab when coming to a stop; it's cause to celebrate when the driver can successively make 5 smooth stops. This problem was experienced by 5 separate drivers, each of whom directly expressed dis-satisfaction. Possibly related to the abrupt braking described above is the sudden activation of the brakes and brake warning in what would otherwise be a controlled stop behind a stopped vehicle at a red traffic light. There an association with: vehicle size -color- brake lite position/intensity.
