Manufacturer has not been able to fix a safety recall on a timely manner . I read that air bags my not deployed and fatal injuries could be suffered if in an accident. It has been years since the recall came out and still no solution .
Incident highway malfunction occurs – [xxx] while driving at a steady speed on the highway, my 2020 Toyota Camry unexpectedly shifted gears on its own. I did not bump the gear shifter or interact with the controls in any abnormal way. The gear shift occurred without warning or driver input, while the vehicle was in motion. A “drive start control malfunction” warning appeared on the dashboard at the time of the incident. Vehicle towed to Toyota service center – July 11 2025 following the incident, I brought the car to a Toyota dealership for diagnosis and repair. I spoke with a service advisor named rebecca, explained the situation, and clearly stated that I did not hit or touch the gear. The vehicle was kept for inspection, repair and I communicatied with Toyota. Vehicle picked up – July 16, 2025 I picked up my car from the Toyota dealership on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. I had not yet heard back from Toyota about coverage or resolution. I chose to wait for further communication regarding whether they would take responsibility for the malfunction. Toyota corporate follow-up call – July 23, 2025 on Tuesday, July 23, 2025, Toyota corporate called to inform me that the repair would not be covered, citing that the vehicle is out of warranty. What disturbed me most was that the representative claimed I had told rebecca that I might have “bumped the gear,” which is completely false. I made it clear from the beginning that I never touched the gear shifter, and that the malfunction occurred while I was driving normally. This false statement was either a miscommunication or a lie — and it minimizes the seriousness of a potential safety defect. Response to Toyota’s misrepresentation – July 23, 2025 during the call, I told Toyota that misrepresenting my account was unacceptable and dangerous. If Toyota is aware that this vehicle model may experience uncommanded gear changes while in motion and fails to report. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
This vehicle, and models with the same throttle body and air filter/air duct assembly have an issue. Where plastic parts from the vacuum box attached to the air duct come loose and get stuck in the throttle body. Causing the engine to rev up then die. I have dealt with this same issue twice in the last three weeks. Thank you for your time.
Door lock actuators failed on all doors. At times they don't unlock or don't lock. Toyota informed not covered under warranty, no recall or campaign notice. For the safety of myself and family I had them replaced at a mechanic. My truck lock is also faulty but not replaced. This started in may 2023 with one lock and again in December of 2024 with the other 3 locks.
The panoramic sunroof on my 2020 Toyota Camry xse failed to close on two separate occasions. The most recent incident occurred about three months ago. After opening the sunroof, the glass panel would not close, leaving the vehicle fully exposed during heavy rain. I had to cover the opening with plastic and tape while standing in the rain, which caused water to enter the vehicle and led to illness from exposure. This failure poses safety risks, including: driver distraction if the failure occurs while driving. Possible water damage to electrical components, potentially affecting vehicle operation. Reduced visibility in heavy rain. Security risks if the vehicle cannot be secured. Online research and discussions with other owners revealed that this problem appears to be relatively common with Toyota Camry models equipped with a panoramic roof. My initial repair estimate was approximately $12,000, which is unreasonable given the vehicle’s value. I ultimately had the sunroof permanently sealed shut at my own expense. I have video evidence and documentation from both incidents, including an earlier occurrence on August 29, 2020, which was reported to a Toyota dealer but dismissed at the time. I believe this should be investigated as a potential recall.
Just bought this car in may 2024 and a few months after owning it my check engine light came on. They said the issue is with a coolant bypass valve and the issue is common with Toyota’s like mine. There is currently no recall, warranty is fighting me to fix it and the repairs will cost me over $700! Toyota needs to recall for this issue.
While driving on an open road (no overpasses, tall buildings or objects overhead) my moon roof glass exploded. I did not hear any warning signs and did not have vehicles in front of me for it to be a kicked up rock. Glass rained down in the car.
Engine coolant bypass valve.
My car has had no incidents. I was told by customer service to file a complaint that there is no remedy for this issue. I gain income from renting this car on turo. While there is an active recall, I am not able to use this car for income, it is removed from the qualification list for car rentals. I am told by the dealership that there is no remedy expected until 2026 for this vehicle. I cannot lose two years worth of income waiting for this solution. I had my car inspected at the dealership and was told that my sensor was not faulty and do not need a resolution. Is there any way that I can receive documentation from NHTSA showing that my vehicle is safe to rent out and has been inspected and cleared from Toyota? I appreciate your assistance in this matter.
Driver side window spontaneously exploded while driving 70 mph on the toll. It’s available for inspection. I almost lost control of the car when it happened. It’s currently at the Toyota dealership in plano. There was no warning of anything before it exploded.
So a few months after installing the pedal commander chip my Camry out of nowhere began flashing warning symbols and messages and the engine was reduced to about 5% power. Pre-collision braking was down, abs was down, lane assistance was down, cruise control was down and it also said “engine reduced power”, please see dealership! so I parked, turned off the car and disconnected the battery for about 10-15 mins. When I reconnected the battery and started the car everything was fine and there were no codes/warning lights. So I thought it was a glitch. Then like 3-4 days later it did it again immobilizing me outside of a clients house to where I had to get it towed. I then thought to unplug the chip and see if that did anything and of course once I did it started up and drove fine with no codes, for about a month or so. Then it gave me all the same codes as before but now without the chip installed. Did an oil change with new filter, replaced the starter cause now it wouldn’t start at all or turn over. Once I replaced the starter, I was able to get it started and drive it a few times over the course of 3-4 weeks at the time I wasn’t driving it that much. But then all of a sudden it stops starting again and now gives me all those codes again and now my Camry has been immobilized for the past year, basically all cause of the accelerator chip.
I was driving the car without any issue or problem. All of a sudden the sunroof glass shuttered. It sounded like a blast. When I stopped the car, the sunroof was broken to small pieces.
Sunroof and its now at the shop for repair. My safety was put at risk if because it sound as a gunshot and could have cause me to swerve into another line. If the sunroof had been open the glass could of cut me. Unknown if the problem has been reproduced or confirmed. It has been inspected by the shop that's doing the repair. No warnings at all. I was traveling down the road and heard something that sounded like a gun shot. It then sounded like a window was open. Once I got home I inspected my car and pulled back the shade and realize the sunroof was shattered in pieces. If I had my sunroof open the glass could of fell in on me. I called my insurance company and they didn't inspected but ordered parts to fix it. They originally told me it would be a 0 dollar deductible. Now the car is in the shop to be repaired, I'm told they found other things and I would have to pay a $500 deductible now.
My dash constantly makes this buzzing sound coming around the center of the dash. It is highly distracting and has almost caused me multiple incidents trying to stop the noise and find out where exactly it’s coming from. Yes it’s been reproduced by others.
Trunk lift support does not work well. When you open the trunk, it flung open so fast and it almost hitthe rear glass. Normally, it should open slowly and stop just before it comes close to rear glass. I am afraid that if try to open the trunk and standing close to trunk, it may hit your face and cause severe injury.
My sunroof exploded with outward shards for no apparent reason while driving so an impact from road debris seem unlikely. Dealer. Inspected and says it's not a warranty issue and to file a comprehensive claim with my insurance. I have read that exploding sunroofs are a problem with some Toyotas. But Toyota refuses to address the problem. Thankfully as startling as the incident was it didn't make me have an accident but could see others may not be so lucky.
Front bumper and side view mirror cover (passenger side) have been badly deformed with in past few months and getting worse for a vehicle which is still under warranty (~2 year old and under 36,000 miles). Side view mirror cover (driver side) has also started to deform. Side view mirror cover (passenger side) has been deformed to an extent that a slight hand touch or push detaches it from the vehicle body which means it can become falling or flying object when vehicle is in motion and cause safety hazard. Parts are available for inspection (pictures are also attached). I claimed the manufacturer warranty through a local Toyota dealership and after sending me from one dealership to another, my warranty claim was denied based on the reason that deformation is possibly due to heat reflection which is an outside influence. Other than taking pictures, dealership and manufacturer have not tried to replicate the failure of parts. Dealership & manufacturer have also failed to rule out any safety issues due to deformed components. As a Toyota customer and vehicle owner, I am highly concerned about (1) if front bumper will function under deformed conditions as it is designed to function and will not cause any safety issues to the vehicle and its occupants (2) deformed components (one of side view mirror is already started to detach) will not completely detach and become safety hazard. I am requesting NHTSA to investigate this matter which looks like a product failure and should be covered under manufacturer warranty or recall.
2018 - 2024 windshield quality. I have 4 cracks in my windshield. I have stopped several. Other Toyota Camry owner who also had windshields. Mostly the year 2018-2020.
First time went to get in my vehicle and the car would not even open, not even the trunk. Had been parked over night. The car was deader than a door nail. The Toyota dealer had a tow truck dispatched to me with a charge box. The charge box would not even crank the vehicle. Had to use his tow truck to jump the car took to Toyota they said it needed a software update. Did it seemed fine now fast forward several months later now when it cranks doesn’t want to crank, dies then have to try again finally it crank. Took in today at dealer they tested battery said it’s showing 100% testing so not the battery then they say the update didn’t take back months ago so needs to be updated again ??. So now I’ve been shuttled home as it will take 2 plus hours. I’ve googled and seen so many complaints that are identical to mine and wondering why my vehicle has no recall when my vehicle has same issues apparently or I’m being lied to by the dealer cause I’ve got a complete lemon. I’ve owned many Toyota’s and never once had issues like this.
As I was driving Monday morning August 16 2021, check engine light and chip failure light showed up. When shifting the vehicle in reverse, but it showed in drive. Took the car to Toyota dealer, and diagnosis reveals "vehicle has green death in connections to shift indicator. This problem costing $4,585. 25 to fix the problem.
The component or system that failed and malfunctioned, is the air conditioning drain hose that leaked water into the bottom of the inside of the car, causing extensive damage to the rugs, padding, soundproof insulation, and damage to the metal frame of the bottom of the car. Corrosion of the electrical system. The safety was at risk due to the sickening mildew swampy odor coming from inside the car from an accumulation of stagnant water. It caused me headaches, sinus infections, and aggravated my asthma. Yes, Toyota dealership and serv pro and independent lab. Yes, the vehicle component has been inspected by the insurance company and dealership and serv pro, and independent lab. Yes, there were warnings and symptoms of the problem which appeared less than a year after the new 2020 Toyota Camry was bought.
While opening the trunk from either the key fob or inside button release on the dash, the trunk lid flies open at high speed and hits the rear window of the car. It appears it's either a shock dampener failure or lack of one. I entered the date it occurred as the date I purchased the car.
I bought a new Toyota Camry 2020 se on October 2020 from Toyota downtown los angeles less than 3 months later. I've only driven it 800miles. Today as I was driving to work I noticed that I had to press on the break harder than usual. Also it lags when starting up.
After a few months of purchasing the vehicle I had a horrible smell in the vehicle and after investigating there was water pooling in the back passenger seat under the weathertec floor mat. There had been a few days of rain before this. This happened again after a few weeks and because of the weather the water under the matt in the back seat was frozen. There had been snow in my area at this time also. The dealership says that they can not duplicate it and now they are holding me responsible for it.
Engine jerks. Brakes go down far. Engine smells of coolant. Brand new car.
Smell of coolant and engine jerks and brakes go down far on brand new car.
Engine smells of coolant. Engine jerks brakes go down far. Brand new car.
Would not start, 25,000 . Hybrid malfunction warning, OCS warming, pre-collision warning, brake system warning. Dealer claimed software update issue. Had to be towed, late to work urgent care/covid, uber to dealer to get loaner, upset. Friday it happened again and I had surgery scheduled. Hybrid malfunction warning pre-collision warning, do not drive, call dealer, tow truck tested battery and it was good. Lights, bells, stereo worked, held key fob to push start no. 40,000 car and dealer today said, OH, we put in a new battery? in a new car? and for it to not start due to software update???? I go 100 out of city with dogs, no cell and would have been stranded in a brand new car due to no notification of hey there are problems, your car wont start, software update? anything? second time 6 weeks later, missed my surgery appt!!!!!!!! tow it again, they now say that Toyota has fixed on 2021 and dealer had list of vehicles with issues by VIN. Great. Why not tell me. One more lemon law wisconsin. I don't even want to go pick it up. Its going to happen again. I think it is electrical, starter, hybrid. Byw why not replace hybrid battery? because they are too expensive. There are recalls for 2020 complete engines. I want it gone. It was parked in my driveway would not start at critical times. I do not feel safe in it, brake malfunction warning? pre crash warning, hybrid?.
Shortly after purchase, the air conditioner smells moldy. The filter has been replaced, yet the unpleasant mold smell is still there. The dealer ignores my complaints. I am allergic to mold, and it has triggered my asthma, and I am now using an inhaler while driving my passenger car, which can cause an accident. Please look into this problem which has been reported for years as I researched this apparent over site. I love the automobile otherwise.
Within 2 weeks of purchasing the car I had the following issues: the keyless key not working, engine immobilizer system light was on, electric power steering system warning light was on and the car battery was completely drained. Car was stopped.
From I bought this car I've noticed a heavy jerk or shift within the engine / transmission I took the vehicle back to Toyota 3 different times complaining about the problem they told me that they reset the transmission but had only documented one time , so on the 2nd of September I was down in ftlauderdale FL at the traffic light of 31st & mcnab the light was red then turned green I drove off then I heard a sound saw so much smoke I couldn't see nothing outside so I stopped turned off the ignition saw that the signs on the dash saying the engine is dead waited until I could safely exited the vehicle went outside saw a lot of antifreeze on the ground but no oil so I opened the hood saw antifreeze all over & a little old so I called Toyota they told me to have the vehicle towed to the nearest dealer after being there for a few hours they told me I had a hole in the engine I replied that couldn't be possible I haven't driven over anything matt the service rep told me it could be 3 things one being my negligence by driving the vehicle without oil I said that can't be possible the oil was changed at 10,000 miles then he said it could be hydrolock meaning I've driven through 3-4 feet of water I replied impossible look at my car do you see how clean it is then he say it also could be factory defect but they would have to pull the engine down to see & they would have results in 2 day I contact them in 2 days they said that they're still diagnosing the problem so on Monday September 7 they contacted me saying the vehicle is hydrolock and it's an insurance claim I said it's impossible he said that's the only way to go so I contact my insurance they went & look at my car & decided that it wasn't driven through water I was driving when the problem happened I thought that the vehicle was going to blow up due to the amount of smoke didn't know that a new car by Toyota wo.
My Toyota Camry xse 2020 battery was dead. I been driving it for almost 6 weeks and I got stranded today when it didn't turned on. It's been happening to many 2020 models and we need answers and solutions. I do not want to be left stranded again.
New vehicle, pristine condition. Highway driving, open space, straight line. No trees, cars, trucks, overpasses, etc. In vicinity. Weather overcast, no rain. Without warning, sunroof glass exploded outward. Glass pieces did fall inside, but mostly blew out and back, gouging rear window and causing significant paint damage on trunk. Size of blowout hole approximately 24"x13". Toyota says not their fault, clearly a rock hit it.
Car suddenly accelerates by itself . I apply brakes and it still propels itself. I lose control of the vehicle and feel that I am lucky that I do not hit a pedestrian or another car because the sudden acceleration eventually stops. The car is new with only 900miles . I am scared to death to drive it. Tomorrow I am bringing car back to the dealer for advice. This sudden acceleration has happened twice. Of course this occurs when I am driving at slow speeds.
My 2020 camery /Toyota is built so low it knotted the claps a loose from under the front part of the vehicle. . . Due to how low the vehicle was built any slight unevenness in the road you can hear and feel the front of the car scrape the front end of the car.
