System operates normally on initial speed setting, when the brake pedal is applied which cancels the cruise control (which is normal) problem arises when resetting the cruise control, by pressing the + r in order to re-set the cruise control, nothing happens, so I have to press the button again to re-engage the system. The problem is intermittent but it always seems to happen when there is a car behind me.
While parallel parked in front of a school, I exited the parking space and entered the roadway. I was straightening the vehicle after exiting the parking space and had my foot on the brake. When I lifted my foot from the brake, before I intentionally applied the accelerator, the vehicle began accelerating. There was no noticeable jerking or lurching. The acceleration was smooth and continuous, as if the accelerator pedal had been pressed. I immediately applied the brake and was able to regain control of the vehicle. This was an unexpected acceleration event and was extremely concerning because I was in a school zone/student pickup area. Had this occurred only a few minutes later, there would typically have been lots of pedestrians, primarily children, in the immediate area. Although there was no collision or injury, I believe the unexpected acceleration created a serious safety hazard. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the Toyota dealer. I have an appointment scheduled for this afternoon (8/26/26 @ 2pm edt). I will provide NHTSA with the dealer's findings when available. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? no, a diagnostic apt. Is scheduled for later today with Toyota. However, the same problem happened again the next day. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no.
