Under ideal nighttime road conditions (dry road and clear visibility), I swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle on the freeway while traveling about 65 miles per hour. I missed hitting the other car, but when I applied the brakes, they locked up and put the car into a skid from which there was no recovering. The car spun out and came to rest after colliding with the center divider twice. The brakes should not have locked up, as this car is equipped with an antilock brake system (abs). If the abs had worked properly, I would have been able to maintain control of the vehicle and avoided the spin and contact with the center divider.
