1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2020

We had recall work done for airbag, sensor light came on after repairs. One dealer quoted $150 to look at the sensor another wanted $450+. The light was not on before recall work was done. It is clear that whatever they did for the recall caused this to happen, don't care if it's not under warranty the dealer caused the issue electrical whatever and should fix it. Obviously this is a known issue with the 2006 Toyota and should also be part of the recall.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2020

Dealer repaired airbag recall, now srs light is on and won’t turn off. Dealer now wants hundreds of dollars to check and or fix possible issue told that it may be something else and more work needed. This issue should be part of recall repairs. This car only has 63,200 miles on it well maintained should not have these issues.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2020

I purchased a Toyota three years ago, immediately I complained about the brakes scrubbing and squeaky sounds, the dealer denied anything was wrong with the brakes. After paying the last payment the other day, now the brake pedal is stiff as a board and takes alot of pressure to stop, which is a safety hazzard to all. Also there have been no warning lights come on notification of any problems. I've also noticed electrical problems like the dash lights going off and on the clock works when it takes a notion.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2019

The airbag repair by Toyota or the original equipment short out (wire at the airbag module) and caused an engine fire.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2019

Car stalled while turning at an intersection; car was in motion. Dashboard went black. No power or control of vehicle. Was unable to restart vehicle with multiple attempts. All systems were dead. After ~ 30 minutes, was able to spontaneously start vehicle and drive. Battery had been replaced~18 mos. Ago; tank was full.

6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2017

On my third clock switch in my steering column it is the device that feeds power to the air bag for the driver side air bag it seem that if the car detects a short or interruption in the electrical line it will light up the dash light . For me this has happen 3 time I am at 95,000. Mileage. Replacing the clock spring switch fixes it but the part is nether a switch or a spring go figure. Hope this helps.

In addition, when the heating system was activated, a burning odor emitted into the vehicle from the ventilation system. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2016

My2006 Toyota Corolla s I have noticed revved up and then back down while in motion and non motion for no apparent reason. Problem unknown. I am having fade paint issues, my headlights are so fogged I can't see at night, and my digital clock dims in and out.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2016

Was driving when airbag light on dash came on, have checked fuses, cleaned all electrical leads and it remains on, been on six months now. Airbag recall fixed today, told dealer to look at light. Once fixed dealer said light still on because the steering spring coil in the steering column has cut something that turns the airbag light on, cost to fix $500. I said let the ligt stay on then, he said it could affect airbag, it might not deploy.

11 Electrical System problem

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph a check engine warning indicator illuminates, then it will go off on its own. The vehicle was driven to the dealer and the diagnosis was that the transmission needed replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. Bp.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2014

Our Toyota Corolla 2006 had a srs air bag warning light come on. We took it to the dealership and we were informed that the driver’s airbag module is attached to a spiral cable assembly with electrical connections that have become damaged from turning the steering wheel. The damage to the spinal wire caused the air bag warning lamp to illuminate which means that the air bags may not deploy in an accident. The spinal cord needs to be replaced. There is a similar issue on other Corollas I believe they are years 2009 and 2010 and so I think this needs to be looked into since it is happening on our vehicle.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2013

Check engine light came on randomly 5 times over the past 2 months. Filed complaint with Toyota. Ecm seems to be acting up, they think it's an issue with a manifold gasket. Taking vehicle to dealer this week to have them diagnose the issue.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2010

April 2010 - tachometer started 'jumping' around. Cel would illuminate on and off and the car would occasionally act like it wanted to stall and acted sluggish. June 2010 - brought to local shop that said it might be a computer issue and to take to Toyota. Took to Toyota, Toyota said that it was just a bad tachometer and that I could choose to replace it. I did not. Cel light continued to go on and off. Vehicle would sometimes shift very hard or seem to have trouble. September 2010 - the vehicle almost stalled at 45mph when it seemed like it was trying to switch gears (auto transmission). When going highway speeds the rpms would not get over 1800 when normally it runs around 2300 (at 65mph) when I would step on brake, rpms would drop to around 1000 and then to the point of stalling. Sometimes I have to drive with the left foot on the brake and the right foot on the accelerator to not have it stall in stop and go traffic. Sometimes at a light, I put it in neutral and continue to rev the engine. Some days the vehicle seems to be running fine, other times it is very stressful to drive when it is having issues. October 2010 - received recall letter from Toyota regarding the ecm (engine control module) and that parts will start to be come available the end of November. Called Toyota corporate and they said they did not currently have a fix for the problem. Continue to drive this vehicle because it is my only means of transportation.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2010

My Corolla 2006 stalled on the highway with out warning. I was almost hit by other cars while trying to get my Corolla to the side of the road with no power. It would not restart. Car was towed to dealership and was found to have a bad ecm. The ecm was replaced and we will see if this one will work. This could have turned out bad if there was more traffic on the highway!.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2010

I was driving in afternoon commuter traffic in washington, DC, when, while stopped at a red light, my car "hiccuped" once and died. I was able to restart it, but as I drove through the green light, my car began to lose power, slow down, then stalled out in the middle of the road. I was able to restart the car, but it wouldn't go over 25 mph, then almost immediately slowed and stalled out again. After that, it took approximately 10 tries to get the engine to turn over and the car to start only long enough to move it 50 feet or so to a safer area. The problem, according to Toyota, is a faulty computer (ecm) that the company was aware of but did not directly notify owners of. (based on what the Toyota repair person said, this problem mirrors what is reported in NHTSA action number pe09054 and technical service bulletin tc015-07 - hard shift and stalling).

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

I have a 2006 Corolla sport with 52,000 miles on it. Yesterday in my way home it stalled in the middle of the traffic. The car was towed to the nearest dealership. The service manager called me today stating that the computer or ecm had to be replaced. According to NHTSA action number : pe09054 NHTSA recall campaign number : n/a make / models : model/build years: Toyota / Corolla 2006 Toyota / Corolla matrix 2006 wondering how many owners of this type of vehicle had same problems, yet Toyota has not issue a recall to fix these issues. Serious accidents could happen if these issues are not addressed in timely manner.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2010

I was driving 60 mph on the highway in my 2006 Toyota Corolla (manual transmission, 40,331 on the odometer) when I lost all acceleration. The car's engine did not stop but the malfunction indicator lamp came on and simultaneously I lost the ability to accelerate. Luckily I was able to maneuver across three lanes to the shoulder; when I finally tried to brake, I had no power and had to push the brakes to the floor; when I did this the car shuddered. The Toyota dealer repaired this by replacing the ecu (electronic control unit/computer), code 0607 at no charge to me. The part is included in the 8year/80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. According to what I've read about this issue, gleaned from the NHTSA database, many others have experienced the same problem but Toyota has not recalled this defective part. This is a serious safety concern and I urge Toyota to reconsider its position.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2010

I was driving my 2006 Toyota Corolla s on the freeway today, and suddenly, without warning, the engine shut down. I had no power steering or abs brakes, and no control of the car. After having it towed to the dealership, I found out that 2005-2009 Toyota Corollas have a huge issue with the engine control module, and that upwards of 5 cars a month come into the dealership with this same complaint. I find it ridiculous that every review I've read mentions that this car has this problem with the ecm, but that nothing has been done about it yet. On top of the reviews, there have been news reports about how Toyota is aware of this problem, and says that this problem does not pose an unreasonable risk to safety.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

On 24 June 2010 I drove 1331 miles back from virginia with no issues. The next evening, my permitted 15 year old son was driving my 2006 Toyota Corolla a mere half mile from our home when my car began to shutter and lose power. The accelerator was unresponsive and then the car shut down taking with it all lights. The check engine light illuminated. The car did restart but instantly died leaving us on the side of the road at night with no lights and unable to move. Fortunately I was with him and we were not in traffic, as he is inexperienced and would not have reacted well if this had happened to him on the road unaccompanied in any type of traffic. We pushed the car home the â½ mile and parked it for the night. The next morning the car started, ran for one minute, bogged and died with the check engine light still illuminated. I applied a rented scan tool and came back with a p0607 trouble code with indicated a bad ecu. The car was towed to Toyota and was repaired with the replacement of the ecu for $993. 40. I am over the emission warranty of 80,000 miles per their TSB with 94,000, so this is out of my pocket. This is frustrating as the internet is littered with stories of this happening to others. I am glad that I made it home before this problem occurred and it appears that Toyota has been lucky as well. This is extremely unsafe and occurs with no warning. I just hope someone doesn't have to die as a result of a well known bad batch of ecus, before the problem is fixed by a recall.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

2006 Toyota Corolla with 1zz-fe engine, less then 25,000 miles, has stalled at a stop sign/stop light when engine was warm. This has happened 3 times in the previous two months. The car has always re-started, but it is very unnerving, and I am worried about a more serious failure.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2010

My check engine light infrequently would come on and off starting in June 2010, along with the car jerking during acceleration at speeds of 10, 25 and 35. 7/7/10 I took my Corolla into a local dealership for diagnosis of the problem, code p2716. I was informed that my engine computer (ecm) needed to be replaced. For safety purposes I had the ecm replaced. The NHTSA has opened a defect investigation into the issue. The number is #pe09054.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

2006 Corolla stalled, did not restart easily and "check engine" light came on.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

4/18/10 car felt like it was going to stall while we were driving 4/24/10 engine stalled right after it was turned on & then half a block away at intersection. Both times car re-started 4/27/10 engine stalled when I came to stop at a stop sign at major intersection. Was able to re-start right away 5/1/10 engine stalled 3 times within a one mile distance. The 3rd time was while driving down a major road & needed to coast to shoulder. Had to wait before engine would re-start. At first we thought I had bought bad gas or the gas cap wasn't on tight. I bought good gas & then after yesterday realized something major was wrong. I was checking on line this morning & found other Toyota Corollas that had the same problem with stalling out. . . The emc?? drove the car to the dealer this afternoon, Sunday, & will be there first thing tomorrow morning to talk with service dept.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

Driving @ 60mph when the engine and all electrical components completely shut off. I had no power steering and due to no power assist brakes the car was more difficult to stop. It is extremely dangerous to be driving along and have that happen. I was fortunate to be on a country road with no other traffic. Had I been on a busy interstate at 70mph it could have been very problematic. Toyota has said that the ecm needs replaced and that the engine cut off on them as well when they tried it. It did restart the following day but I was too afraid to drive it again and had it towed to the dealer!.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2010

I'm writing because there is an injustice in the way that Toyota is handling yet another issue. My husband was driving his 2006 Toyota Corolla on 4/21/10 when it stalled while he was driving. He lost all power, so he could not even turn on his hazards. Luckily, thankfully, he was not hurt and did not hurt anyone else. . Read more...

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2010

While driving my 2006 Corolla on vacation the motor stalled and the check engine light came on. Luckily we were in a parking lot and after a minute or two the engine restarted but just went a few yards and stalled again. After checking the fluids (all ok) I waited about 10 minutes and once again started the engine, this time I was able to drive about one block before it stalled again in traffic and I had to push it off the side of the road. I called a towtruck and had it taken to a nearby Toyota dealer in simi valley, CA. After leaving it there overnight, they called and said it needed a new ecm (engine control module). That was replaced as well as some routine service work. They did not charge for the ecm as they were familiar with that problem. I consider this a safety issue as it results in almost complete loss of brakes and steering.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2010

I was driving my mom's 2006 Toyota Corolla ce tonight. I was stopped at a red light waiting to turn left. The light turned green, I pressed the gas pedal and the car stalled and it would barely move at all and the check engine light came on. I was thankfully able to get off to the shoulder of the road without being in an accident. After I got to the shoulder off the road the car sounded like it was about to quit running and just die out. I turned the car off and restarted it. The check engine light was still on and I was terrified about having to drivethe car home, about 2 miles from my destination at that time, but I tried it and when I pushed the gas pedal, after I restarted the car, it done okay and did not stall. However, the check engine light never went out even after restarting the care. This is a big safetly risk and needs to be fixed by Toyota. Someone could have hit me in the back end and it is definitely a safety hazard and needs to be resolved! I was very upset when this happened not sure what I was going to do. Please investigate this issue. I no longer feel safe driving any Toyota product. Again, I was driving my mom's 2006 Toyota Corolla ce. I am the owner of a 2007 scion tc and I am thinking about trading it off because I no longer feel safe driving anything made by Toyota. Before today, I wasn't really worried about driving my mom's car since none of the incidents where the vehicle speeds up and you can't stop it affected her model but after this incident today, I will not be driving her car at all. I feel like my life is at danger when in a Toyota. Please help protect my safety and families around America. Toyota needs to make a recall regarding this because it is a safety risk!!!! despite what Toyota says. They haven't been in the situation themselves. It is absolutely no fun. If they can't fix the problems, they need to just shut down. People's lives are at risk.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

Failure of powertrain control module, obdii code p2716. Vehicle stops all forward progress. Toyota has issued TSB on issue. Appears rampant by internet search. Just occurred to me.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2010

One Saturday afternoon, my 2006 Corolla with only 32k mileage on it just stopped in the middle of the freeway (I-880 south bound) in oakland, CA just after the oak exit. To make things worse, the area where it stopped has no shoulder. The chp pushed the car to the nearby off ramp and I had it towed to the Toyota dealership in hayward. The service attendant told me my car had a computer problem which happened in 2005 and 2006 models of Corolla. They did some fixes on it. When I was picking it up, settled their exorbitant fees and wait on the side for the car, it took me over 20 minutes to wait. It turned out the car broke again with the same problem and told me to wait another 15 minutes so they can fix something in the computer of the car. My concern is, if they knew there were some issues with their 2005 or 2006 Corollas, they should have notified the customers to prevent dangerous things to happen. And why would the car with only 32k miles on it suddenly stops in the middle of the freeway? it would be a different story if the mileage is over 100k.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

Ecm (engine control module) is defective. Car loses power and sometimes dies while driving, also the transmission shifts very hard going into each gear. A search on the internet finds that this is a common issue with many Toyota models for 2006-2007. Dealer has offered a warranty fix for cars still under factory warranty only. This is a serious and potentially deadly issue and is due to a defective part , not normal wear and tear. This issue should have resulted in a recall a long time ago! its time that our government watchdogs start protecting the consumer, not the corporations.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2010

Car engine suddenly stalls or looses power when driving , could have been a very serious accident. Transmission shifts very hard.

35 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2010

Driving at normal speed in traffic the check engine light appeared and the engine lost power. In los angeles traffic this can be deadly. I was nearly rear ended twice due to the inability to even have the car roll to a safe stop. The problem has been diagnosed as a known ecm failure and many owner forums have said this is a widely known and common failure.
