36 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2016 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/18/2017

The 2016 Toyota Highlander does not display kph (kilometers per hour) for driving in canada. The numbers are on the speedometer however, not illuminated and impossible to see while driving. This should be basic information while driving in canada. As I understand it, vehicles sold in canada have the same issue---not being able to see the mph when driven in the us. I would think that being able to be aware of one's speed would be a basic safety feature---however---not on a Toyota Highlander.

37 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/30/2017

Faulty rear door ajar sensor reports rear door open intermittently while door is closed causing interior lights, warning lights, and chimes. Started with only turns, acceleration, deceleration, but rapidly deteriorated to near constant failure, particularly in warm weather. Initially started near 2 years ago (25k miles), but was only mildly irritating. Now vehicle cannot be locked with this condition.

38 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/17/2015

When driving on the country side, we used the high beam lights and noticed when we stop smoke from the head lamps. It was so hot that melted the lens covers. This represent a hazard and liability. It can cause a severe burn skin damage to a person and probably if left more time a fire. Toyota has a service technical bulletin t-sb-0036-08 (NHTSA id number: 10024893) that address a "discoloration on the lens". My VIN number is included on the list. Toyota knows there is a problem with the material used, it absorbs to much heat. This is a potential for fire and for a severe burn. Toyota should replace them. Pictures attached as well as service technical bulletin t-sb-0036-08. Even though it was not a fire, the presence of the smoke indicate a potential for fire if we had use it longer.

39 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

Door sensors show door open, door chimes, and interior lights flash when in motion driving over light bump on all roads, highway or city streets. And/or when driving from the street into driveway at 1mph at all times as up over slight curb. Happens when I shift the gears into motion. Started in sept. 2015 to current date.

41 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/04/2015

When stationary or driving, dashboard door-open light stays on. All dome lights stay on when driving unless turned completely off on dashboard but they will still flicker and warning sound will go on and off when driving, turning a corner, or going over a bump on any road. When locking the car with the door-remote, the warning sound goes on and stays on until car is unlocked. Car must be locked by hand to stop warning sound. Car was sent to Toyota repair center for electrical repairs, but this warning light issue was not repaired. There is a bump in the rear hatch from backing up in a garage. Service dept. Said rear door needed to be repaired because rear hatch would not close correctly. However, rear hatch has always closed and still closed. Toyota could not guarantee a new hatch or repaired body work would fix the problem. Warning lights problem started months before rear door issue. Toyota offered to turn warning sound off, but I feel it is a safety issue. I routinely checked if any door is open.

42 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2013 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/23/2014

The door open alert and alert beeping came on as well as all of the interior lighting as I was driving. It shows glass door on the display. I checked all doors and none of the doors are open. It was very distracting and dangerous to be driving at night on the highway with all interior lights on. They keep going on and off and the alert keeps beeping. As far as I can find out, there is no way to turn off the interior lights. My car is out of warranty by 300 miles. I just had it in for the 35,000 mile service. I find numerous accounts of this known issue on several websites/discussion forums. I called Toyota and was informed there is no recall however I found there was a TSB? sent out on the back latches. I called jim norton Toyota in tulsa, ok and was informed they want a $110 diagnostic fee to see what the issue is. Seems like with all of the same issues that Toyota would look into this issue and resolve. Toyota said they could not waive the diagnostic fee. Hoping I can find a quick fix or someone willing to resolve this issue inexpensively or better yet, Toyota could step up and resolve the issue themselves as a customer service stand.

Driver side rear lights stops working once in a while. The bulbs are fine have replaced them with the new one and the problem still persist. There has been quite a lot of complaint and nothing has been addressed.

45 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/30/2014

We have a 2010 Toyota Highlander and the dome lights turn on & the door ajar alarm sounds while turning left & sometimes while turning right. This has also happened when rolling up or down the passengers side window. Took it to dealer & they could not diagnosed or repair it.

46 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/18/2014

As noted on multiple websites from users having the same issue as I am, there needs to be a recall on this issue; the rear passanger breaklight is faulty. It does not illuminate when pressed. There are hundreds and hundreds of other Highlander owners experiencing this exact same issue. Dealer has been no help unless I give them every penny I have to my name of course. This is an issue that I am not experiencing alone. Public outcry for assistance needed on pulling a recall on this issue. Please and thank you.

47 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2012 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/06/2012

The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that the head lights were too dim, making it difficult for night driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician verified the failure and adjusted the lights however, the failure was not remedied. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 4,000.

48 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/17/2012

Overheating of drl/high beam headlamp bulbs, causing melting/ distortion of clear headlamp housings and opaque white areas to form in housings directly in front of inboard bulbs. The involved bulbs are also observed to be deformed and bulging. First noted at 65k miles. This issue is seen to be commonly reported for Highlander 2001-2007, and thus represents a consistent design defect and possible fire hazard. Toyota dealership is now determining whether Toyota will cover repair of this design defect under our comprehensive extended warranty.

49 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2002 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

Rear-right break light not working. Replace bulb and did not work. Checked socket and all is fine but break light still not working. I have research this for a while and no solution. These seems to be a very common problem and Toyota does not have a solution. Definitively a safety issue. I already got a ticket from police for not having these lights in working condition.

50 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

The lenses of the daytime running lamps/high beams have developed white, oval-shaped bubbling/melting marks of approximately 0. 5 to 0. 75 inches in diameter, in the center of the lenses, directly in front of the lamps. I first noticed this in December 2010 just prior to changing the original lamps (therefore the replacement lamps did not cause this problem). I reported this to Toyota, case number 1012071480. Toyota told me to take this up with the service department of a dealer. At the dealership, I was initially quoted a price of $988 to replace the assemblies. After discussion with the service manager and his follow-up with Toyota, the price was lowered to $396 to pay only for labor, parts to be provided at no charge. I opted to not have this done for this price. Possible safety issues: 1) damaged/melting lenses could impact the effectiveness of the high beams and/or the daytime running lamps; 2) heat that is hot enough to damage/melt the lenses could be a fire hazard; 3) damaged/melting lenses could be an indication of an electrical problem. I have digital photos taken in December 2010 showing the damaged/melting lenses that I have provided to Toyota and would be pleased to provide to NHTSA. I have also retained the original lamps, and the car still has the damaged/melted lenses.

51 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2002 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/26/2010

Passenger side break light failure on 2002 Toyota Highlander. This is a safety issue when other drivers cannot see you break particularly from the right angle. This is an issue that has happened to many drivers of the same model year. . Read more...

52 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

A 2004 Toyota Highlander signal light (safety item) is malfunctioning and when I took it to Toyota dealer (darcars), I was told I have to change the navigation system (luxury item) which currently is working. I have no idea why they had to integrate these two functions when one is a safety and the other one is luxury items. Besides, it costs $6000 + labor + tax to change the navigation system. After intensive search on the internet I found out that Toyota knows about the problem except they only cover the problem under the 36,000mile/3 year warranty. If this was a mileage related problem, I can understand even if two none related functions are interlocked, but this has nothing to do with mileage and we cannot drive without a signal light but we can without a navigation system. This problem started a month ago and I have tried to get a response from Toyota and they are not giving me any response regarding this mater.

53 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/11/2009

2005 Toyota Highlander hybrid. Driving to work in a blizzard on 12/11/09 all dash board lights went on. Dealership found that the sunroof housing failed causing $3,977. 16 worth of damage. Being out of warranty the dealer agreed to pay 2,000. 00. Toyota customer service another 1,500 and we paid 477. 16. We picked up the car on 12/24/09. On 2/2/10 we returned it after noticing a burn spot on each of the plastic head light covers. The dealer found both highbeam bulbs melted, and suggested I had overused them causing the intense heat that did the damage. I am concerned it could be a result of delayed water damage showing up. Our concerns with this car(which we purchased new in Nov. Of 2005)goes back to 9/7/06 when the cruise control did not slow the car going down hills. On 2/28/07 we had brake and wiper blade issues. On 4/20/07 the blades locked during a downpour on the 5 freeway. I had to pull over in a panic. On 7/12/07 the cargo clip had to be replaced. On 9/10/07 that parking brake did not hold properly and there was a rattle from the right rear. On 11/6/07 we complained of squeaky brakes. Dealer tightened loose nuts and bolts on 4x4 assembly. On 4/1/08 the brakes were replaced @ 29,080 miles. On 10/22/08 the sound system failed and was replaced under warranty. Next week we are having the 5th set of tires put on this vehicle which has only 53,000 miles on it. The set to be replaced has only about 15,000 miles on them. They have a 60,000 mile warranty.

54 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/20/2009

I bought a 2008 Toyota Highlander in December 2007. I did not test drive the vehicle at night. After a few weeks, I tried to back up at night. The lights are completely inadequate and they are a safety hazard. I have to get out of the vehicle every few feet and check to make sure there is nothing/no one in my path when backing up at night. I asked the dealer to check/repair the lights. They said this is a common complaint but there is nothing they can do to fix it. It is not safe to back up the vehicle at night because the lights do not illuminate enough to see if someone is in your path. I have asked the manufacturer for help fixing the problem but they said there is nothing they can do.
