I had a flat tire on my 2004 Toyota Highlander. My husband and I were going through the tire replacement steps and had the vehicle jacked with the manufacturer provided jack. After removing the lug nuts, I went to remove the flat tire from the wheel studs. The jack popped out of place and bent, and is now unusable. We had to find a heavy duty jack to lift the vehicle to get the tire off and put the spare tire on. Spare was placed and properly tightened. Now, there is a scraping sound when driving the vehicle at any speed. I had flat fixed and when tire company removed spare, one wheel stud for front passenger side broke off. Tire company says they've seen this numerous times with Highlanders; the integrity and/or machining of the wheel stud appears defective.

We took our 2005 Toyota Highlander to the tire shop for a tire rotation @ 10,000 miles. When the wheel nuts were hand torqued to 85pli two wheel studs broke. The employee told us that the metal seemed soft. We have the broken studs if you want us to send them in for testing.

The locking lug nuts on the Toyota Highlander wheels break and fragment with sharp metal shards when they are removed with the matching lock lug socket and 1 foot wrench without any abnormal torsion. The equipped lug wrench is exactly 12 inches long (lever length). The lug nuts when broken cannot be removed to change the tires. This has happened twice: once on the highway and the second time with a new matching socket and the 12" wrench. The original locking lug nut had to be drilled off by the dealer. The person applying the torque weighs 153 lbs. Patrick vanschoyck, m. D.
