Electronic Stability Control Problems of Toyota Land Cruiser

Toyota Land Cruiser owners have reported 7 electronic stability control related problems since 1996. Table 1 shows the 1 most common electronic stability control problems. The number one most common problem is related to the vehicle's electronic stability control (7 problems). For details of each of the problem category, use the links in the table.

Electronic Stability Control problem #1

While driving at approximately 30 mph, the "brake" warning light illuminated along with the high pitch audible brake failure alarm. Approximately 1,000 - 2,000 feet later all brake function ceased entirely, only by applying parking brake and placing the vehicle in neutral was stopping possible. There were no injuries or property damage. Popping hood to look for signs of fluid leak, etc, we noticed that the brake fluid in the reservoir was over filled significantly - it had not been earlier and the brakes had recently been serviced. A cursory search of "land cruiser brake failure" online yielded numerous reports on Toyota message boards of identical situations: brake light and alarm, total loss of braking power within moments, owners finding that the failure resulted in fluid returning to the reservoir overfilling it. There appear to be no fluid leaks or brake line failures. In addition to the brake warning lights, all of the traction control, anti-skid, and abs warning lights are now illuminated - I understand that each are also powered by the brake system. We have not yet had our vehicle inspected by a mechanic, in most of the situations identical to ours we found online, the cause was the failure of the brake booster motor. We understand that all components may fail eventually. However, in our situation, there was insufficient warning of imminent brake failure. Had the vehicle been on a highway or a windy mountain road the results could have been catastrophic. Finally, we strongly urge you to cross-check this situation with other Toyota suvs and trucks from 1995 - 2006 as in our initial research online these incidents seemed common to Toyota vehicles model years spanning a long period.

Electronic Stability Control problem #2

A few times while traveling at fwy speeds, as we start to go uphill the car violently shakes back and forth (steering wheel hard to hold on to). Vsc, trac and the liitle car with the skid marks behind it flash on the dash along with an alarm that lasts from 3-5 seconds. We have had a hard time keeping the car in the lane. Almost ran into the center divider. We have taken it to our personal mechanic, called Toyota, taken it to Toyota of san luis dealership and nobody has been able to find the problem. It is in our opinion that this car in unsafe to drive and unsafe to sell.

Electronic Stability Control problem #3

Gas boils and vehicle leaks gas during 4 wheeling in moab, ut. Now the check engine light is on and code relates to issues with evaporator canister. This type of check engine light disables to safety features 1)trac off and 2) 4 low option.

Electronic Stability Control problem #4

Complete and total braking failure. Zero brake pressure, complete loss of stopping force. Abs failed, all warning lights illuminated. This caused the vehicle to proceed uncontrolled down the road for a couple of kilometers due to driving down hill till it was slowed enough by resistance to pull off the road and call a tow truck. Again, it was a complete and total brake failure, diagnosed by Toyota as a failed abs pumping and accumulator system.

Electronic Stability Control problem #5

On may 29,2013 at approximately 1 pm, I was stopped at a traffic light waiting for approaching traffic to clear so that I could make a left turn. Suddenly, I heard a buzzer alarm and numerous dash board lights lit up, including abs, vsc, brake, etc. Completing the turn, I realized that the brakes were virtually non functional and required extreme force to slow down the vehicle. I drove to my nearby home at a very slow speed and parked the vehicle in my garage. Upon returning from a trip I had the towing company flatbed the vehicle to the dealer. Their diagnostics concluded that the hydraulic brake booster had failed and needed replacement. Total cost is $3100 including a slight discount since I have been a customer for over 16 years. The service manager could not recall a similar repair during his 18 years with the Toyota agency. I consider myself fortunate that the failure occurred when I was stopped. Had it happened at freeway speeds or driving down the long and steep roads in my community I could have had a serious and perhaps a fatal accident. I have a phd in mechanical engineering with over 32 years of industrial experience. The brake system on this vehicle has a latent design flaw without a fail safe backup. Toyota should be held accountable, redesign the faulty components, notify owners of the problem and recall all affected vehicles. I spoke with a representative to have Toyota pick up the repair cost. Of course, they did nothing, quoting the expiration of the warranty, etc, etc. I believe the only recourse is for the NHTSA take action against Toyota.

Electronic Stability Control problem #6

2000 Toyota Land Cruiser problems: abs lights on, vss trac and vsc off lights on. Went through to Toyota dealership for diagnostic and discovered codes for the following: c1223 - abs control system malfunction and c1246 - master cylinder pressure sensor. Toyota dealer recommend to replace "skid control ecu" found through internet that is common problem for Toyota trucks particularly sequoias.

Electronic Stability Control problem #7

Vehicle skid control locks up front wheel at low speeds and makes it impossible to clear intersection. Objects and passengers are violently thrown forward. Dealer has been unsuccessful in resolving this dangerous condition, even after I paid to replace the yaw sensor, the warning lights for abs and vsc came on the way home after repair. This problem had been discussed for years on the ih8mud Land Cruiser enthusiast site. Some owners report wheels locking up at highway speeds putting vehicle in danger of rollover accident.
