Air Bag Not Deploy problems of the 2008 Toyota Matrix

Someone pulled out in front of me and I hit them with the front of my car. I was driving 40 miles an hour on a city street. It crashed in the front end, radiator, fenders and hood. The airbags did not deploy. I had been sent a recall notice and scheduled an appointment at a local Toyota dealer immediately. The crash happened two weeks before the appointment. This is a known problem with the manufacturer. Nhtsa recall no. 19v-627.

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph when the vehicle in front of the contact made an unexpected stop causing the contact to rear end the vehicle in front. There was front-end damage to the vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was not towed and a police report was filed. The contact received injuries to their nose and needed medical attention. The vehicle was taken to a collision center however, was not repaired. The dealer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that their vehicle was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case regarding the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 235,000.

Please advise Toyota to recall the 2008 Matrix, as it has an affected takata airbag that may lead to catastrophic injury during deployment. I own a 2008 Toyota Matrix which is in the same generation as the 2005-2007 Toyota Matrix models. The airbag used in the 2008 Matrix is identical to that which is used in the 2005-2007 Toyota Matrix models. However, the 2008 Toyota Matrix airbag was not recalled (unlike the 05-07 models) even though it has the same airbag part number as the recalled models. I believe that Toyota may have overlooked the 08 Matrix as it occurred during a limited production run (there were very few 08 Matrixes produced; they began selling the 09 in early 08). The airbag in my vehicle is not deployed, but I feel unsafe knowing the same airbag was recalled but my model year was overlooked.

The contact was driving 5 mph and attempting a left turn into a parking space when the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly and jumped a curb before crashing into a trash bin. The vehicle was not destroyed. There were no injuries but the police were contacted and report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 42,651 and the current mileage was 42,680. Updated 04/13/12 . . Updated 04/18/bf the consumer was driving 5 mph. As he turned into a parking space, the vehicle suddenly accelerated unexpectedly and jumped the curb before crashing into a heavy concrete trash bin. The consumer put the vehicle in park, but the wheels continued to rev. By this time, smoke was created by the tires burning. The wheels did not cease revving until the ignition was turned off a few seconds later. The impact moved the concrete bin about 1 1/2 feet forward into the adjacent building. The air bags did not deploy. Updated 06/05/12 the consumer stated the vehicle was towed to a collision center recommended by the insurance company. The repairs were completed in nine days. Collision center did not find any broken cables or wires that could have caused the incident. Updated 06/15/2012.
