Toyota Matrix owners have reported 53 problems related to steering (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Bought 2009 Toyota Matrix in sept. 2009. . . Have experienced both gas pedal issues and steering issues. Gas pedal issue has been "fixed". In regards to the steering issue, I have noticed that when I was driving at speeds over 35mph it does pull to the right and feels like the car is being pushed by wind, my daughter & husband also experienced this while driving the car. I did not report the steering issue to anyone because I did not know it was a defect, this is the first Toyota I have owned and thought it was a Toyota thing. Also, I was involved in an accident in Nov. 2009 in the Toyota Matrix, I am unsure of whether the gas pedal issue may have played a role in that incident. I do not own this car now, I traded it in on another vehicle.

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota corolla Matrix. When starting the vehicle all of the warning lights illuminated on the instrument control panel. The speedometer failed, and then there was a loss of power steering. The vehicle was taken to the Toyota dealership for inspection. A technician stated that because they could not duplicate the failure they could not provide a remedy. The current and failure mileages were 72483. Updated 12/17/09 the warning lights remained on until the ignition was turned off. The speedometer and tachometer never left zero. Updated 12/21/09.
I have a 2009 Toyota Matrix with 5000 miles on it. It will be moving down the road fine and start moving to the left into the nest lane on the highway. Upon trying to correct it will glide to the other lane on the right. It seems like a real struggle trying to keep the car in the lane. I have had this happen several times and my husband has also experienced this. We tried to blame it on the wind and the shape of the car, but it has not been windy every time this has happened. We live in a snow belt and are concerned if this would happen on snow or ice we would not be able to correct as normal.
On sept 9 2009, I was on my way to las vegas nevada in my 2009 Toyota Matrix sport and noticed when I exceeded alittle over the speed of 65 my car began to swerve side to side nearly looking like I'm about to side swipe the car in the next lane over. . And this is not the only time this has happened a few more times on my way to work. And I have taken my car to Toyota and they kept on trying to convince me that I need new tires and I need alignment done, so really they didn't to anything for me my car is still new and I didn't need tires at all I still had alot of tire tread, and if you looked at the tires you would notice I was burning nothing but shoulder were going since I got it. So I've been very unhappy with Toyota they haven't don't anything to make me happen but just want to try and charge me for so many "services" that my car "need". :( very sad that I bought a Toyota, I think I should have gotten a Ford.
1. Driving down road at 35mph on a clear sunny day. 2. 2006 Toyota Matrix jerked uncontrollably to the side as if the steering wheel was turned even though it was held straight for normal driving. This resulted in losing control of the car and nearly causing an accident with our infant in the backseat. 3. Towed to maintenance center and they mentioned they had seen this problem several times before. They told us of a steering technical service bulletin st005-01 that mentioned this problem. We have now towed it to the dealer and are waiting final resolution.

Several months ago I drove through a puddle of water in our parking lot at work. It was storming with the wind blowing as well. When I drove through the puddle, my battery light came on and I lost steering. Then engine never stopped. Once I traveled a few yards, the steering started working and the battery light went off. It happened another 3 more times before I ever left my work facility. I was able to drive to a Toyota dealership for them to check it out. They found nothing wrong with the car. I told them something makes me lose steering associated with water. The gentleman at Toyota told me not to drive through puddles. I did not think it was funny. It has happened a few more times with my husband driving. We live in louisiana and it rains. I can not avoid going through water when it rains. I need help.

2008 Toyota Matrix xr. . . . Car drifts severely to the left at highway speeds. . . Especially when in the left lane. I realize there is a crown to every road, but our other vehicles do not do this on the same stretch of highway in any lanes. To give an indication of the severity, at 65+mph, the car would be in the median within 2-3 seconds without the constant rightward pressure on the steering wheel. I did not notice the drift on the test drive at the dealer. For what it's worth, the new roadway near the dealer is nearly perfectly flat. Also, the car does not seem to drift as much with two adults in the car as was the case during the test drive. I noticed it immediately upon driving the car a longer distance on other major highways with only myself in the car. I notified the salesman right away. I have not yet had an accident, but must maintain constant rightward pressure on the steering wheel. . . Especially any time I venture into the left lane. It doesn't take much of a distraction to imagine a scenario where the car drifts into the oncoming lane, or worse, an oncoming car. I have taken it to dealer three times with no success. Now I am getting the run-around (dealer from which I purchased the car is trying to push me off on another Toyota dealer who did the first "warranty" alignment which did not resolve the issue.
There is a sway in the driving of the car on the highway. Staying in a lane is difficult. Steering is uneasy.
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) hello I am the proud owner of a 2006 Toyota Matrix. In late 2007 while driving the car would shut off. I had it towed to sun Toyota (new port richey FL) in which they stated this model car has a faulty engine security device which causes the car to shut off. They replaced the computer and assured me there were no other problems. In early 2008 I started noticing when I would turn it would feel as if I lost total control of the steering, then suddenly I could straighten the wheel again. For months there was nothing Toyota would do. Just last week I started seeing reports of other Matrix/corrola owners experiencing the same incident. Yesterday I contacted sun Toyota to see if they will finally check my car out and to see if it had anything to do with the past computer/engine issue. Toyota informs me they have no record of my ever being there or the part being replaced. Luckily I saved my reciept which proves I was. My two compaints are that they refuse to aknowledge the steering problem or look at it and they have misplaced my previous records? I find it hard to beleive and quite convenient on their part. What can I do? I've even filed a complaint at Toyota corp office only to be brushed off. I feel I'm stuck with an unsafe piece of junk that I paid 16k for and Toyota will not help me. Please help!!!! [xxx].

Steering component problems have led to excessive cupping/tire wear on 2005 Toyota Matrix (29,000 miles). Have complained about steering issues since purchase (original owner) and was always told there was no problem. Dealer acknowledges problems - sometimes - but cannot find issue and resolve. I feel this is a significant safety issue.

My complaint was first filed on 3/25/2006 (odi # 10153679). This is the 2nd complaint about the defective Toyota Matrix that I drove in 2006. I was driving a 2006 Toyota Matrix and lost total control over the vehicle. I was driving on rt 2 west bound out of boston during evening rush hour. I was trying to change lane to my right and found there was a car approaching and honked at me. I had not left my lane yet and tried to pull my car straight back. The car reacted by shifting too much to the left and I tried only to adjust it, keeping in mind that was a power-steered system, to keep it straight. There was a 1-2 seconds afterwards the car seemed to be on track and I was driving fine. After that 2 seconds, the car accelerated all of a sudden, gas pedal was down to the floor, the car veered toward the left on it's own. I tried to maintain it straight but in vain and completely lost control over it. The wheel was so solid and it was impossible to steer the car even just a little bit. It spun counterclockwise over 3 lanes toward my left and hit the central guardrail and stopped. The vehicle was totaled. The police issued me a ticket on the spot. Other than complaint odi # 10153679 filed at this website after the incident, I also filed a complaint at Toyota's website on the same day (3/25/2006). The Matrix model was stopped in 2007 and continued in 2008 with an advertisement that it was a complete new design. I later checked the internet and found a very similar accident happened in new york state on 10/9/2005. A woman named [xxx] , 55 of west harverstraw was driving a Matrix. Her car spun off route 287 in harding and she was hospitalized afterwards. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I just filed a complaint to NHTSA (#10153679) at this website. I forgot to mention that I searched on the internet and found a similar accident happened in NY state. Jean m. Naples was driving a Toyota Matrix on route 287 northbound in harding and the car lost control and spun toward the left. She was treated at morristown memorial hospital. (if Toyota wants to see the complaint #10153679, I would like to open it to them. I originally specified "non-disclosure" because I did not want the hassle of getting involved in an investigation, questionnaire, forms, and all that stuff!).

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Matrix. The contact noticed that the alignment was uneven, causing excessive wear on the tires. The contact replaced the tires three times. The contact did not inform the dealer nor the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 54,000. The failure mileage was approximately 8,000. Updated 04/12/lj updated 04/13/11.
Fiance and I were on the 210 freeway heading east. He said we should take the car to the dealer when I asked why he said the steering is acting funny. The second he finished his sentence, the car spun out of control. Car did 360 degree turns across freeway (from left lane to right lane) and over the edge, down a hill, over a fence, and into a ditch. Minor injuries. We were lucky not to have been killed. Car was totaled. Accident is still being investigated to determine if there was a mechanical defect.
2004 Toyota Matrix drifted to the left while driving resulting in the consumer losing control and the vehicle flipping over. ** answer required*** as the consumer attempted once more to gain control of the steering, the vehicle veered off to the left, hit a ditch, went airborne and flipped. Toyota determined that there was steering problems.
After purchase, complained of "steering wander. " not only did the dealer carmax Toyota not fix the problem, but returned the car with the power steering malfunctioning. After several more trips to the dealer, they finally replaced the steering rack admitting problems with some units. Upon being informed that this made no difference, and without further retesting, carmax and Toyota refuse to perform any more attempts at fixing either problem. So now I'm filing under maryland's lemon law because I'm stuck with a wandering car without full power steering. In addition, I had carmax change the oil at 300 miles. Subsequently, I changed the oil at 400 miles and was surprised to see that it was black as coal indicating piston blowby. I just changed the oil at 3000 miles and the oil is a black as coal, as if the engine had closer to 90,ooo miles on it.
