Failure Date: 02/11/2023

These 3 things may be related to each other because they all are connected to the steering wheel. My car can be scheduled for an inspection regarding these safety problems. 1. The airbag warning light is sometimes on when I drive the car. I'm worried it won't work if I'm in a wreck. 2. The horn doesn't work when I press on the part of the steering wheel that should make it work. It does make a loud sound when I press the panic button on my key fob, but only when the car is turned off. I had to stick my head out of the window and yell at a driver who was getting close to hitting my car in a parking lot. I was parked, and they were backing out of their parking stall. They stopped inches away from my car. 3. The cruise control does not work in the car. I think by using this feature, and maintaining a steady speed, it reduces the chances of accidents. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? see answers #1, 2 and 3 above. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed? #1. No. A dealer told me it would cost me $100 to have them check the airbag light. #2. The horn was checked by an independent service center. #3. No. Has it been inspected? #1. This car has been serviced two different times for recalls for the airbag not working correctly. I wonder if the horn and cruise control wires were damaged, or not put back together correctly, when the recall work was being done, while owned by my sister-in-law. #2. No. #3. No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? #1. The warning lamp for the airbag started coming on around August 15, 2024. #2. No. It didn't work on February 11, 2023 - when I bought the car. #3. No. It didn't work on February 11, 2023.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 02/19/2022

My daughter was driving as usual when she went to apply the brakes about 5 car lengths back and the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably despite braking. Her foot was not on the accelerator, she does not have floor mats that would cause anything to hit the accelerator. This has happened on 5-6 occasions which almost resulted in an accident. She barely got stopped mere inches away from the car in front of her despite braking earlier than normal because she encountered this once already during her trip. No check engine codes, the brakes are good, the car idles high. That is really it. This is a serious issue that seemingly cannot be diagnosed. After doing research to see what the problem may be, I have seen countless complaints of a similar nature. My daughters life is invaluable. This needs to be addressed.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 10/23/2020

I just bought a 2006 Matrix (Toyota). It only has 88,000 miles on it (October, 2020). The car is in great condition and seems to have been well maintained. The check engine light comes on and off. I've taken it to 2 separate qualified mechanics. They can't find anything wrong. When the light is off the car runs perfect. While I was driving to work the gas pedal was all the way to the floor and the car would not accelerate at all on a straight away flat road. I was driving 30mph leaving town. The speed limit increased to 40mph before further increasing to 65mph highway. It's a straight flat road. I could not get the car over 55mph. When I got to a small hill the car finally made it to the top 45 mph with the gas pedal all the way depressed. I was only able to get the car up to highway speed as I was coming down the other side of the hill with the gas pedal still depressed completely to the floor. I used a half of a tank of gas to drive 15 miles. I am writing this as I am concerned. When I looked online I found the problem I am describing was a common problem amongst other Matrix owners. I could also see several other complaints where the Matrix accelerated and was unable to be stopped. Why hasn't the 2006 been recalled? what is the likelihood of the Matrix accelerating out of control on me after the pedal is floored with no acceleration? the risk seems pretty high considering the amount of complaints online. I am a mother of 2. Are my kids safe in this car? are other drivers on the road safe from this car?.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

2009 Toyota Matrix first problem started stalling suddenly in traffic last year, but now very frequently stalls even on highways at high speeds. No warnings. When stalled all lights comes on in dash, including "check engine" light. Completely turn off ignition and restarting is the only way to fix this issue at that time. After restarting the check engine light goes out. Occurred several times in all sorts of weather, but more frequently in hot summer days. Yesterday stalled 4 times within 90 minutes drive. Restart cleared engine computer dealership had difficult time replicating failure. But, advised replacement of the engine control module at a cost of over $1000. Since this year model not recalled by Toyota yet. I do not know how or where to complain so that Toyota acknowledge that it is a safety issue and fix this at their expense.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 12/27/2012

My daughter was driving home on a snowy night and suddenly the brakes became unresponsive, the abs and brake lights came on, and luckily she didn't need to come to a full stop at that time. After that the brakes worked for the rest of the drive home, but were spongy and she needed to give additional time to stop. Toyota issued a TSB-0205-09 on 7/6/2009 about this - c0215. We spent 671. 10 to repair the rear left and the mechanic said we will most likely need to do the rear right in the future. I called Toyota reimbursement dept. About this and they said they would do nothing since it's out of the warranty period of 36k. They said it's not a safety issue as well. My point to them was how can you issue a TSB in 2009 on a 2009 model and not back this problem up for the life of the car? they know the sensor is going to go bad most likely, it could cause a serious safety issue, but no recall was ever issued. This is a dangerous business practice! we already had 2 recalls (floor mat interference with accelerator pedal and accelerator pedal reinforcement bar) on this vehicle. This needs to be addressed and the consumer shouldn't need to bear the cost!.

The approximate failure mileage was 62,465. Bp.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 05/27/2012

On may 30,2012 while driving my 2009 Toyota corolla with 27,000 miles , we are the original owners, down route one in peabody, massachusetts in heavy fast lane traffic the auto, for no reason slowed to almost a stop and could not be accelerated. With the hazard lights on it was difficult to get to the side of the highway as no one seemed to recognize the meaning of hazard lights. I let the car rest and when I started it everything seemed fine and I drove to revere without a problem. I parked the car in the northgate shopping mall and when I returned a few hours later the auto was totally dead and I had to have it towed to winthrop. They could not diagnose the problem because of the dead battery that they replaced at a cost of $129. 00. They told us to drive locally for a while. So far the problem has not recurred. What started out a $20,000. 00 purchase for safety and reliability has become something else. We would like an explanation about this problem and we understand this is not an isolated incident. We are now in a situation of trading the 2009 corolla ,(something we cannot afford) or selling it to some unsuspecting person, something we do not care to do. Even if it never happens again the seeds of fear have been planted.

Setting, in my reserved parking spot because car could not be driven due to severe front end damage. I was given a memory stick with edr download info. , telling me Toyota will respond. 22 pdf pages, 19 were bizarre math equations, never to be understood. My event showed when ignition turned on engine at 1600rpm, to 800rpm, as I began to move, then went to 2000rpm, in less then 60 seconds, within a small lane, plunging me into brick wall. Letter from Toyota administrator said no faults were found, sorry cannot be of assistance. In the 3rd paragraph was false info. Extensive test drive done to test brakes, etc. Everything working well. I called his direct # leaving a message in regard to I had serious questions "test drive"? leaving my name & #. He called next day to apologize, "I misstated the test drive", at the service center it was driven a short distance, I said service center? tm- yes!, I said street outside my apt. Door? tm- yes!. Then said parking lot? tm- with hesitation, yes! asked if he was sure of the outcome, yes! next day via fax I wrote to him telling him that he made many misstatements! there is no street by my apt. , car never went to a service center, have lo jack telling me the car was never moved since collision. Which I knew since frame is severely bent, bumper rests on ground, all oil leaked out. If this is how a administrator of Toyota claims responds with outright lies, how many Toyota owners have been deceived. I told him; let's cut to the chase, I want a replacement car that is safe! 2000rpm- that is hwy. Speed, 1600rpm at startup with foot on break, Toyota calls this safe? he never knew the car could not be driven or where it was investigated, am I to trust his response? not at all!.

28 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 06/22/2010

Morning of June 22nd, when I drove back from charlotte, nc airport to university area, on highway I-85, my Toyota Matrix 2003 stop acceleration-quickly drop the speed from 70mph to 40mph and still dropping. Doesn't matter how hard I apply the gas pedal, it won't accelerate. I stopped the car in an open area close to an exit and stopped the engine--power was on and radio was working. I stopped the engine and waited a few minutes. I then turned the engine back on, tried it again. I was able to drive it to home. God, I was lucky.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 05/11/2010

At 10:30 am on a sunny day, I exited the I-880 northbound 23rd Ave exit. Coming up to a line of cars stopped at the e11th st signal light, I began pressing down on the service brake to slow down. As I was coming up to the BMW ahead of me, I pressed more on the service brake to stop my car. Things went wrong when I felt and heard the accelerator revving up, causing me to instinctively press even harder on the service brake. As the acceleration increased, my Toyota Matrix's brakes began slipping causing my car to inch closer to the BMW. Realizing that the service brake was not holding, I pulled up on the emergency brake and shifted the car into neutral, all the while still pressing down on the service brake. Since the engine was still accelerating faster, I managed to turn the ignition key off, successfully shutting down the engine and stopping the acceleration. After a brief 15 seconds, I restarted the car with the engine in park, and the emergency and service brakes on. The engine immediately revved up as before and I once again turned off the ignition key to shut down the engine. Realizing I had a major problem, I kept the engine off and put the car in neutral so I could push the car to a safer part on the side of the road. Upon inspection, I found that my floor mat was securely locked into place, and that the accelerator pedal was in the up position, a few inches off the floor. I am the original owner with 75000 accident and incident free miles on the car, and this is the first thing that has ever gone wrong with the vehicle. I had aaa tow the car to one Toyota in oakland, and they are doing diagnostics with the vehicle. They gave me a rental car free of charge until they determine what went wrong. The service dealer told me that it is the 2007 and later Matrix's that have the acceleration problem, and that for my 2006 Matrix to have this problem is uncommon. Hopefully Toyota will find and correct the problem to prevent this from happening to others.

Failure Date: 03/30/2010

After purchasing gas at 6:30 a. M. , I started my 2008 Toyota Matrix and was rolling slowly out a slight incline to the street. The car lurched forward and I jammed first one foot then both feet on the brake while pulling up the emergency brake. It felt like holding back a horse at the starting gate. I put the car in park and the engine began racing like it does during an auto emissions test. I turned the car off and it stopped. I finally got the nerve to start the car again and it performed normally as it has since. March 2,2010 while stopped at a light at the intersection of joppa road and loch raven blvd. My 2007 Toyota Matrix accelerated, while my foot was on the brake into the truck in front of me. . . Also stopped at the red light. You could smell brakes burning, police were called but only did a collision report since my front end was damaged and the truck was ok. No personal injuries. This was the first time I had anything like this happen with my car. I was terrified at the time. My car was towed to the Toyota collision center. Called Toyota customer service, told it would take 30 days before an inspector would look at the car and the damage could not be repaired until after seen by the inspector. On March 31st the inspector looked at my car ( after it had been driven without my knowledge to a Toyota dealer) I was told it would take another 30 days for his results. I am waiting for Toyotas decision.

On February 11, I took my 2009 Toyota Matrix to motorcars Toyota of cleveland heights, ohio, to have the car repaired in the gas pedal recall. While there, I was informed of another recall on the car, on its brakes. Both of these issues were address and I picked the car up on February 13th. As I was rounding a corner near the crocker bassett exit, my car began to skid. I immediately began to pump the brakes and attempt to straighten my car out, but the brakes did not engage. I firmly pressed down on the brakes and nothing happened; I then tried the emergency brake and the car still did not slow down. I was unable to regain control of the vehicle and it began to spin out and to the left. I pumped the brakes as hard and fast as I could, but the brakes never engaged and my car hit the cement median at 55mph. Due to a build up of snow and ice against the median, my car was propelled into the air and landed on its roof. My airbags did not deploy in the crash.
