8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

I previously reported this problem under odi # 10304339. I incorrectly reported that "I felt a big thump like I was hit from behind". However, I now believe that this activity could have been caused by "the sudden acceleration" that has been frequently mentioned by the media. Although what I felt seemed like a hit from behind, it could have been a short acceleration burst lasting only a couple of seconds. There have not been any further incidences of this nature.

9 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

My 2005 Toyota Prius has twice accelerated beyond my control. Both occasions occurred within the past 2-3 months. The first time, I was accelerating to pass someone. I had the pedal basically to the floor, and when I stopped accelerating, the pedal "stuck," and the engine revved. When acceleration continued after I took my foot off the accelerator, I applied the brakes and the acceleration stopped. The second time, I was accelerating rapidly to enter the highway. Again, acceleration continued after I took my foot off the gas pedal. I tried the brake, which did not work, so I put my foot under the gas pedal and lifted it up, and the acceleration stopped. I am very aware Toyota is having similar complaints, and that floor mats are sometimes blamed; however, at the time of both of these incidents, there were not floormats in the car.

Our son was killed on oct 22nd in a single car crash while driving a 2005 Toyota Prius( the police report states that he lost control, jumped the curb and died in the ensuing crash) while negotiating a curve while attempting to enter the freeway in tucson az. We strongly believe that this may have been caused by sudden acceleration and or break problems. I know this is an older model, but in light of Toyota's lies and cover-ups time will only tell. 15 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2006

I have a 2005 Toyota Prius, purchased in September 2006. Ever since I've owned my 2005 Prius, I have experienced unintended acceleration on a regular basis. It most often happens on a particular street in my neighborhood where I need to stop before entering a main thoroughfare. There is a very slight decline just before the road terminates at an intersection. I'm always traveling at a relatively slow speed (15-20 mph), coasting and not depressing the gas peddle when it occurs. Just at the point where I begin to brake, the car suddenly lunges forward and accelerates. I have to hit the brakes, and the car feels like it's still going forward, and the traction control light on the dashboard comes on. This first time it occurred was during the winter following purchase of my car. Initially I thought that the car performed poorly in snow because the traction control light was coming on. But then after that first winter passed and the roads were completely dry, it happened as well and continues to happen regularly. Fortunately it always happens under these very particular circumstances when I'm not traveling fast, otherwise I fear not being able to stop the car and plowing into a main street, or hitting a car in front of me, or worse hitting a pedestrian.

Smoke was coming out of the wheels when the vehicle was turned off. Vehicle was towed to the dealer.

17 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2006

I own a 2005 Prius and have 3 unintended acceleration incidents in 5 years, two separate drivers. City driving at 35 mph. Pedal did not stick, it was sucked to the floor we turned of engine before speed got to 50mph. No accident or injury, note this: each time I asked the dealer repair shop about it, they dismissed it as floor mats and "could not reproduce it ". Interestingly, the repair request did not show up on dealers action list (2 different dealers) even though every time I asked about a squeak or rattle did show up on the records. . Did Toyota give instructions to dealers on how to downplay it and not record the complaint?.

18 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2006

When I am braking at about 30 mph and hit a pot hole or some other road defect, my car suddenly accelerates/braking does not function for about 1/2 a second. If I hit 2 potholes consecutively, the problem will occur each time. I have complained about this problem to Toyota dealerships since I bought the car as it occurs frequently. The dealerships could not find anything wrong with the car, but it sounds exactly like the problem with the 2010 Prius recall.
