They gave me a case number 220322000191. When I got to the dealer, they said I would have to pay $150 for a diagnosis. I left it there and am now reporting this. 5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2020

2007 Prius 144k miles when problem 1st occurred. Car serviced regularly - oil changed every 3500 miles. Master warning light would come on randomly when turning or going up/down hill at highway speeds. Computer diagnostics run repeatedly (at Toyota and at local mechanic) nothing ever found. 12/2016 brought car to Toyota service couldn't find anything initially. 2+ hours later told oil is very low which made no sense; no oil spot in garage, car passed inspection and wasn't due for an oil change . Was told the 'oil warning indicator' was lit despite the fact that the oil warning light never came on. Ever. (oil indicator should come on when car is started and remain on -briefly if the oil is low. It does not. ) told tech that only the master light comes on and the circumstances. Never given an explanation. Problem has gotten progressively worse. Master indicator only comes on when there is almost no oil. Last time this happened I added 4 qts. Of oil, drove 687 miles and had to add another 4 qts. At this point I have to check the oil every time I get into the car.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2017

I was driving about 35 mph on a city street when the car suddenly shifted into neutral. I tried to put it back in drive, but it kept shifting back into neutral. Luckily there was enough distance between me and the car behind me was that it didn't result in an accident. I held the gearshift in drive with my right hand and steered with my left until I was able to turn off of the street into a parking lot. I could not put the car in park. I pressed the park button and nothing happened. I turned the car off, waited a minute and started it again. I could shift into reverse, but it continued to pop back into neutral when in drive. I had to drive home holding the gearshift in drive with one hand.

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. While driving approximately 55 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing, but the technician was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. Seventeen days later, the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to another dealer who performed an oil change and checked the tire pressure. One week later, the failure recurred and the tire gauge indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the technician recommended that the hybrid battery might be the cause of the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the hybrid battery needed to be replaced with a 12-volt regular battery. The battery was not replaced. Two hours later, while the contact was driving, the failure recurred and the check engine indicator started to blink. The vehicle was pulled to the side of the road where the contact noticed smoke coming from the engine and called aaa. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there were two holes at the bottom of the engine. The technician also found a piece of metal that fractured from the engine. 10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2016

Takata recall. My car won't shut off. They say the instrument panel cluster needs replaced. It has been on back order for 13 days so my car is useless. I can't drive it. I paid either 23,000 or 28,000 for it and have kept it maintained. The Toyota place says they have another lady that's been waiting 3 days less than mine. I called California Toyota. They can't tell me anything - but today told me it might be on back order. This is a safety issue. A car that won't shut off is a danger. It could kick into gear. It could damage the motor. A car that you can't tell how much gas is in it can be a problem as well. I can't drive it. The speedometer won't work. This is a problem with safety as if you can't tell what speed you are going you risk tickets. The Toyota place in birmingham has replaced 30 of these instrument clusters. If that is representative nationwide there is a big problem and these cars should be recalled. I only have 150,000 miles approx. On my car. The salesman told me it would last at least 300,000 miles. I had to replace the 4800. 00 battery at 103000 miles. My other gripe is they didn't tell me until 13 days later it was "probably" on back order. I wouldn't have rented a car for 13 days had I known it was "probably" on back order.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Wife backed vehicle up then shifted to drive . Multipal dash warning lights came on. Vehicle was stopped and shut off. An attempt was made to restart the vehicle to move it back to a parked position. The vehicle could not be put back into drive or reverse. Had to manually push the vehicle to a parked position. It was lucky that this took place on our property in front of our residence and not a busy public roadway. Had the vehicle towed on a flatbed to a Toyota dealer approx. 50 miles away. Toyota dealer advised later the transaxle/transmission failed. Found a Toyota "technical service bulletin" dated July 7,2006 specifically dealing with this issue in the 2004 to 2007 Prius. Document title: m. I. L. "on" dtc p0aa6 or p3009, information codes 526 & 613 models '04- Prius. In the document it states "the transaxel assembly has been improved to prevent this condition. " bottom line is Toyota is aware of the faulty equipment mentioned above and has not addressed the problem properly to recall the vehicles with this issue even though this is an obvious safety issue.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2014

Hybrid battery failed. The battery is hyped as lasting the lifetime of your car. 7 years and 131k is not a lifetime in my opinion. If I lived or bought my car in CA, it would be covered under warranty. Because I live in alabama, it is not. Warranty should be standardized.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2013

While traveling on the highway at 55 mph, the power was lost and the accelerator did not respond to being depressed. The car was steered from the middle lane on a three lane highway to gradually coast into the safety lane off the highway where the brake was used to stop the vehicle. The power button was then depressed and the engine restarted and we reentered the highway. This was the only such incident in seven years of ownership of this vehicle. This incident has not recurred.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2012

The following described incidents have taken place at least three times with no warning. Upon starting the vehicle there is no instrument panel display which is digital. The vehicle could still be driven. The vehicle's engine would not turn off without making numerous attempts. This has sometimes taken up to 10 min. . Then for whatever reasons after several hours the mentioned malfunctions stop and everything works correctly. I am very concerned the dash display showing speed and other necessary information will malfunction while the vehicle is being driven. Especially at night. Being able to turn the vehicle off immediately is also important. This vehicle is regularly serviced by Toyota who have been unable to locate or correct the problem. I have researched this issue online and have found that there is a large number of Toyota Prius owners having the same type of safety issues with their vehicles. I have read but not confirmed that Toyota is aware of the mentioned problems with the Prius. There are some serious safety issues with this make and model of vehicle that need to be addressed as soon as possible. I hope NHTSA will be able to assist in this matter. Thank you.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

I have been having problems for about a year now with my Prius 2007 when I apply the brakes. The car stutters when it changes from hybrid to gas. Serviced only by Toyota. When I brought the car in for a recall I asked them to fix the problem . They could not identify the problem and called in a specialist and subsequently was told that this is typical wear on a car this old (5 years, 59,000 miles). This was from a repair specialist sent from Toyota when the regular service department could not identify the problem. I drive on highway s everyday to work and home and I am a nervous wreck, worrying that the car will just come to a stop in the middle of traffic. Over the past 2 years when I go thru a car wash the front driver side headlight gets moisture inside. When I brought this to the attention of the service dept at Toyota I was told it would cost approximately $600 to replace the headlight. This was way before it had fallen out of warranty (36,000) but of course they did not tell me that it was covered, in fact they told me what it would cost to replace! now the bulb is also flickering on and off in this same headlight. Definitely a safety issue. Toyota quoted me $270. 00 to change the light bulb. The reason I was given was that they have to take off the entire front bumper to change an $11. 00 bulb at autozone. We were told that if my hand was small enough I could try to do it myself. I called Toyota corporate, and was told that Toyota was discounting the bulb, it normally should cost $420. 00. They were aware of the problem and extended the warranty to 50,000 miles but did not issue a recall for this issue either. I only found out because the service department was dragging its feet in diagnosing the problem with the braking system so I called corporate and mentioned the moisture problem and that was how I found out that it was not only my car.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

I have recently moved to pennsylvania, a state with many hills, and have found that on icy hills, the traction control causes the engine to shut down entirely when the wheels slip. This creates a very dangerous situation where there is no power at all to the wheels, causing the car to slip backward on the ice. I live on a steep hill and my car has almost rolled off the hill three times due to the failure of the traction control / engine. The Prius, unlike many other cars with traction control, has no traction control shutdown/override switch. In researching this online, many other owners report the same problem. Toyota refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem. This is very dangerous.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

I have a 2007 Toyota Prius that is approaching 36,000 miles soon. Its brakes stutter when I try to come to a smooth stop. Its engine also vibrates excessively as if its misfiring, when idling. The symptoms do not happen all the time, but they happen frequently. I have taken the car to the local dealership several times, but they have not been able to fix the problems permanently. After my most recent visit to the dealer, they claimed they could not replicate the brake stutter symptoms and that the car\'s computer had no record of it misfiring. If you do a google search on the internet about "2007 Prius brake stutter problems", it appears to have happened to many other people. Please help. I want the problem fixed, or the vehicle replaced. There has been no physical damage nor crashes nor injuries. However, I am concerned that such symptoms detract from the value of the automobile, or at worst may result in an actual crash and injuries later on. The symptoms are a distraction and annoyance while driving.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that whenever the front wheels began to spin in icy or snowy conditions, the engine completely shut off. The failure occurred multiple times while trying to drive up a hill or an inclined driveway. The dealer inspected the fuel injection system on several occasions and was unable to find the cause of the failure. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was designed in such a way that the engine would turn off to avoid damaging the stability control system. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current mileage was approximately 36,000. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000. Updated 3/16/10 updated 06/29/10.
