Side/window Air Bag problems of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Six problems related to side/window air bag have been reported for the 2007 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2010

My 2007 Toyota Prius was involved in side impact collision. The car was hit at the drivers side front wheel. Damage was from the drivers door around to the front of the car. The car that hit me was going around 40 miles per hour. My car was totaled, and I spent 3 nights in the hospital with a partially collapsed lung, broken rib, and a concussion. Neither the side or front airbags deployed. I have post concussion syndrome because of the accident. I believe that my concussion would have been much less had the airbag deployed. I am a public school teacher, and I have not been able to return to work for month, and the doctors say it could be at least a few more weeks. In addition I am told it could be 3 months or longer before my symptoms disappear.

2 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2010

My daughters were involved in accident 27 Aug 10 were the air bags did not deploy and the seat belts never locked because of this my daughter hit her head twice on the steering wheel, and is in sever pain with lots of bruising and is wearing a neck brace. She needs to go in for further scans to make sure there is nothing wrong with her back. The damage done to the car was severe. She hit the other vehicle turned did a 180 degree spin and then hit the car again the cars locked on to each other and went over the center divider on the street facing oncoming traffic. The lady had run the red light and went thru three lanes.

3 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2009

I was in a 2007 Prius entering a cross street and was hit broad-side on the left drivers side from the middle of my car to the left front end. The damage was severe and I was taken to the hospital suffering from cuts and severe bruises to my ribs and backside. The side curtains did not deploy and I was told by Toyota headquarters that I was not hit hard enough. I am not totally recovered from this accident as yet and it will probably take a few more weeks. I was also told by Toyota there haven't been any problems with side-curtains and there were no other complaints about this kind of failure. I know that is not true and I would like Toyota to accept responsibility for this safety feature failure. Updated 04/07/10.

4 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. While driving 55 mph, the contact's vehicle was struck head-on by another vehicle. The front and side curtain air bags failed to deploy. The contact injured her chest and neck area. A police report was filed. The vehicle was inspected by an insurance adjuster, who was unable to determine why the air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was destroyed. A report was filed with the manufacturer and they stated that a representative would call the contact with an update on their investigation. The failure mileage was 19,000. Updated 6/4/09 the consumer's wife was injured. Updated 06/09/09.

5 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

Hello there. I am almost 8 months pregnant and I drive a Prius. I called the dealer and the Toyota company to get my driver side airbag disabled until I have my child. I believe that if the bag went off it would pose harm to my fetus, especially as I carry high in my torso. They said that they were unable to do so, as per regulation. I find this horrid, especially with the holiday season and the usual rise of impaired drivers. I can be as safe as I can but if someone hits me and the airbag deploys, it has a great potential of doing more [possibly unnecessary] damage to my baby than the crash alone. I was told that you could possibly provide some resolution for this in order for my dealer to disable the airbag for my remaining two months of pregnancy. Please get back to me.

6 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2007

2007 Prius was "t-boned" on the driver side. Other car (Honda) was going ~40 mph, and Prius was going ~25 mph. Air bags did not deploy in the Prius, but did in the Honda. Driver of Prius had to be cut out of car and suffered minor injuries. Medics on the scene were surprised that the air bags did not deploy in the Prius. Since the Prius was totaled, the parts have not been repaired or replaced.
